Whoa...those are very nice!!!
I only found the first five from the left, the others, never seen before. Very very nice search scatt ^^
I like all of them.

I'm going to assume based on the portraits that i see, that they have once again swiped our sprites and made their own portraits for them.

Tho, the Beatrix portrait might work for me since mine is horribly pillow shaded and has a reversed eye patch ... hmmmmm

I think ill use it. Counter theft it is then :)

and if anyone ever planned on making Vyers, that sidney portrait looks like an ideal thing to use as a template haha...

Yeah that Beatrix looks great~
VagrantS portraits look good to me, too..

where'd ya found those?
Title:
Post by: jimmyjw88 on October 23, 2009, 05:07:03 am
Yeah, that Beatrix is great ^^
Also, Seushiro Marche could use that Marche portrait. I think its nice.
And yes, where you found those scatt? ^^

Seu should change the sprite, too.

Hot damn...Would it be possible to see their corresponding sprites?
Title:

Ashley Riot's portrait....wow. Great find. I'll have to think about it but I might have to steal it too.
Title:
Post by: Rythe on October 23, 2009, 09:47:46 am
I really love that Adelle portrait...I'd steal her spritesheet in an instant.
Is it just me, or does Marche's hair look kinda...off? Like he's got a bobcut.
All in all, these look pretty awesome. Who is the guy in between Ashley and Zack?
Title:
Post by: stewelement on October 23, 2009, 10:04:49 am
Probably Sydney from Vagrant Story, same hair and the facial expression looks like some of the official artwork.
Title:
Post by: Rythe on October 23, 2009, 10:16:51 am
I looked up some images and you're definitely right, it's Sydney. I guess it's obvious that I never played Vagrant Story. <_<

I've seem some of these before, but I love the new ones, especially the tonberry.  And now I have portraits for my unfinished Gabranth and Sydney sprites.

Fuck these are good. I wish they would have a little more communication with us. A few of those look a little too much like what we had already worked on.

my my... great potraits, better if we got the sprites

pedo... she's a kid from FFTA.

and those are Ashley Riot (left) and Sydney Losstarot (right) from Vagrant Story.

Hey man, you have to have some fun every now and then right?  I thought about doing the Chris Hansen "Why don't you have a seat over there?" since Zodiac called him a Pedo . . . but you have to go with the Timeless Classic man!

The problem with that is... this isn't the spam section. We (or at least I) try to be as serious as possible in the sections that are actually dedicated to serious materials like spriting and hacking.

Do we have any members that frequent both communities? We really need to establish a rapport with these guys: with our resources pooled, we could be unstoppable! And who knows, maybe they could translate some of our patches (and we could translate some of theirs, if they have any) and we'd reach some wider audiences...Cause honestly, as nice as these are, I really don't like the thought of us stealing their shit and toting it as our own...

Sounds like a good deal. They steal our sprites and we steal their portraits.

Pity about the pillow shading in a lot of these but they're still not bad.

wow. . . after seeing those I am amazed and wonder what reference they use for it. . . eye levels still match FFT ports even if angles are changed. . . Im ripping that first one. . . looks useful for a lot of anime like haired characters. . .

*what is FF Gaiden? I got multiple results in search

** never mind . ..  it is a DS game damn it I dnt have that console. . .

Gosh, those are amazing... o.0

I know when it comes to spritesheets you go off of an existing sprite. Is this the same for portraits?
Title:
Post by: mav on November 30, 2009, 05:02:34 pm
Well, yes and no. Yes, many people do go off existing portraits and modify to create "new" ones (I do this extensively), but no, you don't have to. Smash and Curu, for example, could whip up phenomenal custom portraits without any bases at all. It's really more about skill-level than necessity.
Title:
Post by: goldenshinywire on November 30, 2009, 07:44:47 pm
That sounds like it'd be kind of difficult. What program do you use to make portraits? Is there a certain one that is more acceptable than others?
Thank you for replying, by the way. I'd like getting into spriting - or, at least, making portraits first - and I was wondering where to start. The Japanese seem to have a really good artist/team. :D Those portraits are great.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 30, 2009, 08:01:52 pm
I use MS Paint to cut, copy, and paste eyes, ears, hair, etc from portrait to portrait till I get something I like. Simultaneously, I work on the palette. After I have a somewhat uniform palette, I usually post a version or two here on the board and continue refining it over and over again. After it looks decent, I incorporate people's suggestions and then I may reduce the colors to 16 (or so) in Macromedia Fireworks. Even after it's 16 colors, I still find myself cleaning it up. I think I'll post like 6 or 7 versions before the final one...

Then again, I am by no means the standard around here, so...
Title:
Post by: goldenshinywire on November 30, 2009, 08:07:31 pm
Yeah, I've lurked around the spriting forum and there's usually several portraits/sprites posted in each topic. I'm kind of interested in making portraits for Disgaea characters and then, if I get confident enough, make the sprites to accompany those portraits. Do you sprite as well?
Title:
Post by: mav on November 30, 2009, 08:27:25 pm
Spriting takes too much time, skill, and patience for me--so no, I don't sprite...

By the way, could someone link me to the Japanese site? I always seem to lose it, and I'd really like to keep track on what they're working on...
Title:
Post by: goldenshinywire on November 30, 2009, 08:39:44 pm
I'd like to see what they're doing, too. Do they do patches?

Not by the Japanese site, but this is still a really good portrait done by some guy over at pixeljoint:

http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/45896.htm (http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/45896.htm)

Sounds like someone we should bring into the fold haha.

Oh here is another guy with a portrait and a decent looking almost isometric Tonberry:

If anyone wants to give a try speaking with the Japanese admin, go ahead. I'm sick of a talk that goes nowhere. It's already annoying enough to have someone else post for you and he doesn't want to e-mail me. What does sending an e-mail cost? >_>

Nice finds Cheetah--some of the people at pixeljoint are just unbelievably talented. That Viera is perfect...the Tonberry links to the Viera, but the other portrait is pretty nice.

And that really sucks with the Japanese guys, Zodiac. I wonder how responsive they are to the idea of working with us...

I don't know how much of FFT fans they are, but you should give it a try in contacting them.

You can track down the Tonberry by searching for stuff made by the second person (I think it was the second).  It looks like it might just be able to blend in with FFT's style, so it could possibly serve as a good start.

I'm pretty sure this is the one he was talking about:

They uploaded new portraits and some of what looks like Smash's works.
Don't know Smash or his works very well but some of those are linked to the Smash ive seen discussed here and some sprites ont he custom section.

Thought id point this out if no one noticed it yet.

Righto, the first two files on this page (http://fft.nm.land.to/cgi-bin/upload.html) are what Knox is referring to, for those interested. They have a PNG file of almost all the portraits Smash did (Cavalier, Sain, Kent, Bangaa, Wyvern, and a Viera I don't recognize). For the record, they have did give Smash credit, but whatever.

We are able to post stuff on their upload page!? Haha your sig and email on the right of the image does make it pretty evident that it is your's Smash. Nice Vierra, though the shading on the top of her head looks too dark. The new Japanese portraits are interesting but i don't know what they are supposed to be.
