I tried editing CYOKO palettes using a hex editor, and it failed somehow.  The file size changed from 73 KB to 61.1 KB, and the blue and green cyokos can't be imported.  I can't phrase a question right now, I'm so disappointed, but I need some help.

Okay, I feel better now.

I went through the chocobos and took down their palette information, then I ctrl+f ed the pallete info and changed it.  I used the Red Chocobo as a base for the blue and green; I just moved the rgb values around a bit.  Take a look:

Original
Yellow Chocobo
50C0E0 = 1
30B0E0 = 2
2088C8 = 3
1868B8 = 4
104890 = 5

203068 = 8 NO CHANGE, KEEP PROPORTIONAL
6888B0 = 9
0018A8 = 10 NO CHANGE, TONGUE
202828 = 11 NO CHANGE, KEEP PROPORTIONAL
405890 = 12
203040 = 13
000068 = 14 NO CHANGE, TONGUE
304068 = 15 TOES
000000 = 16

Black Chocobo
907088 = 1
886078 = 2
785068 = 3
684050 = 4
483840 = 5

Red Chocobo

Green Chocobo

Blue Chocobo
F08058 = 1
E86850 = 2
D85038 = 3
B03828 = 4
802820 = 5
D8E0E0 = 6 NO CHANGE, KEEP PROPORTIONAL

806860 = 12
383030 = 13
282068 = 14 NO CHANGE, TONGUE
000000 = 15

My problem is that somewhere along the line the filesize changed, either from saving with MS Paint or the hex editing.

I don't think hex editing palettes is a good idea. There are tools that can do that for you.

I use Irfanview for my sprite's palette editing. Photoshop would probably work, along with some other, freer, ones.

Can GrapicsGale edit palettes?

IIRC, that's the program Smash uses for palettes.

They can be easily edited with GIMP.

Okay, GraphicsGale is running, Yellow Chocobo is loaded, and I want to change all instances of 50C0E0 to 80F058.  What do I do?

Look through the menus for some sort of "palette" editing? I dunno. Never used it.

Irfanview and Gimp are free, if you can't get it to work with graphicsgale.

note: you'll probably have to manually convert your color values to decimal. Microsoft calculator can do that.

Use Gimp.

I could post pics.

Nevermind, I just figured it out, except for the filesize changing part.  Are there any reports of MS Paint changing the size of a file when it saves it, or if it is not explicitly saved as a 16 color bitmap?

Possibly.

Re-rip the bmp from the spr and do it over again. MS paint's never troubled me before, though.

One question... what the hell ever possessed you into editing a bmp's palettes with a hex editor?

Hex editing is what I'm most comfortable with.  What I know the most about.  And it's a hell of a lot faster than trying to eyedrop every single little square with MS Paint.  I think I made the blue chocobo in about half an hour.

I think SNESPal would be fastest for you.

I got it to work.  The only problem is my green chocobo looks like a lime popsicle on the battlefield, and I haven't changed it's portrait yet.

It takes a total of two minutes on GIMP
I refuse to play Final Fantasy Tactics again until I am able to do my FF6 patch! And, FFT 1.3 doesn't technically count as FFT: so there!
