Title: Most emotional video game moments & Ruined ones
Post by: Xifanie on June 21, 2016, 09:07:53 am
I'd like to see what everyone thinks about which games have the strongest emotional moments... scenes that you can't help but cry every damn time.
Quite a few games have pretty emotional moments, but for a few reasons I somehow can't get myself emotionally involved; I don't understand why I block that way, it's like I can't take the game seriously or something.

My list of most emotional video games moments
Legend of Mana
Jumi arc; more specifically the end

Valkyrie Profile
Best ending, and a fair amount of sidequests on their own

Grandia
Leene's death, and Justin's deep depression afterwards... also parting with Sue

Unfortunately, these are the only ones I can think of right now... but those first two are always the ones I go back to if I need a powerful emotional release.
My list of worst ruined moments
Final Fantasy IV
Rydia is heavily traumatized by her village's destruction, seeing it go up in flames. 5 minutes later, this basically happens:
- There's a block of ice blocking our path, Rydia, how about you use some fire?
- I'm kinda traumatized you know.
- np just do it
- Ok.

Disgaea
Thursdays is dying for 5 minutes; they're trying to make the scene very emotional and then bam, Thursday doesn't die. It just left me with a very bitter taste in the mouth.
Use any format you want, but do use spoilers.

Interesting!  For me, this is definitely my number one:

After you defeat the Mecha-Drago as Flint, and its baby protects it during its final moments, the camera scrolls over to the right and slowly reveals Claus's corpse at the base of the cliff.  At this point, Flint is still distraught over losing his wife to the very beast he just defeated, but isn't aware that said beast also killed his son.

You only play as Flint during the first chapter of the game (there are eight), and then play as various other characters henceforth.  During the rest of the game, he spends the majority of his time visiting his wife's grave, and looking for his son Claus in the mountains, not knowing that he's already avenged his son.

Flint is the most human video game character I've ever seen.  Just thinking about what this man has gone through, his thirst for vengeance, and desperation to save his son gets me every single time I play this game.

Mind you, his son's corpse is retrieved by the main antagonists of the game and is turned into a "mysterious, super soldier" that the player fights a few times throughout the game.  Flint finds out about this nearing the end of the game, but this only adds to the emotional intensity that the game has to offer as a whole.

Persona 4
Nanako in the hospital, and all of Heaven.

Lost Odyssey
Too many of the dreams to list, but especially the girl at the inn who requests stories. Seriously the best writing ever put into a game.

Disgaea
Blue and Yellow are killed. :(

Okay, honest answer: event before the final battle, and the not-quite-best ending with all the blood and Laharl never learning about Flonne's reincarnation. There's never been another game to make me laugh so hard and still get so heavy.

Man, my memory is shot. Only came up with one for now

Awesome rpg for genesis, probably still my personal favorite game to this day. You start off as 2 hunters, which are basically mercenaries. Eventually you bite off more than you can chew and in an attempt to save her protégé, Alys the heroine, takes a direct hit from a dark wave that poisons her. Of course you go off on a mission to save her, then get back and she dies.

Definitely gotta feel for Yuna

I figure another thing. Plenty of video game are not very emotional; if at all. They're just boring.
But I figured video game moments that could have been developed into something emotional or building up to something very emotional and then RUINED are worth mentioning too. I added some to my first post.

Definitely gotta feel for Yuna

It's especially bad replaying the game game with a fucking kid running around Yuna being all like "I'm so happy! The lady here will die a horrible death to bring us the calm!"

And can you imagine a summoner quitting their pilgrimage? Going from "Omg, you're so great thank you so much for your efforts" to "Get out of my sight you worthless piece of shit."

Resident evil 1
Barry's death if wrong choices are made

Code Veronica
Steve's death/transformation

Silent Hill 2
Just the whole damn story itself about his wife and everything going on and what really happened, poor fella

Quite sad

Well here are my emotional moments

Final Fantasy 6
After the world of ruin starts and Celes awakens on the solitary island with Cid, if you kill Cid she attempts to take her own life

Suikoden
Gremo Dying in a trap room filled with Man eating roses

Suikoden 2
Nanami "Dying" when your army takes over the Rockaxe kingdom

Final Fantasy 4
Tellah's death scene after he casts Meteor on Golbez for the first time

Final Fantasy 5
Galuf's Death near the end of the 2nd world

Dot Hack Outbreak / Quarintine
Mia's death and rebirth along with Elk's anger towards you.

Megaman X Command Mission
Spider's death shortly after Zero joins you for good, along with the final act of the game.

My most ruined moments

Final Fantasy 7
Aeris' death... mostly because when I first played the game and made her my dedicated healer/mage and built up her limit breaks got a date with her then BAM Sephiroth kills her... I was Furious at that, mostly because I now had to find a replacement mage...

Final Fantasy XIII-2
Having to pay for the true ending... and it was NOT worth the money I paid...

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns
Just the fact this exists makes me upset....

Final Fantasy 4
The Many "Deaths" of Cid, although some can be funny it got annoying after the first fake out...

Final Fantasy 4: The after years
The original episodic releases and how it was changed from the japanise version to English merging several stories together and the prices for each story was way too much, although now you can get the full version on the PSP/PS3/Android/Steam for one price now

Pokemon Series
Zubat... Mother FUCKING Zubat....

Lightning Returns was my favorite in the trilogy. :I
Sadly nothing really emotional about it, and the events were really simple (which didn't help with emotion getting across), but some of the side stories were nice, the main story was cool, and the game itself fun to play. You can actually drive monsters to extinction and no longer get random battles! FUCKAWESOME.

Oh I know people that enjoyed Lightning returns, I personally didn't... and that's fine.

I was burned badly playing 13 and 13-2 I was not looking forward to lightning returns ^^; so that really skewed my opion of it

Oh, I hated XIII-2. I only managed to sit through it with Xifanie playing it for me. That made me change my opinion from, "hated it" to, "makes about as much sense as X-2 did, yeah." XIII, I just had Stockholm syndrome. I didn't want it, I wasn't going to buy it, but I was given it as a gift, so I was determined to get some fun out of it no matter how frustrated I got. I bought it two more times as a result. I'm not very smart.

While we're here, since I haven't done any ruined moments...
Final Fantasy XIII-2
We've gotten to the ending, as happy as anyone can expect... And Serah drops dead out of nowhere because plot device and the end of the world begins. K. I'm not even sure 'anticlimactic' fits, the way they wrote that out.

Final Fantasy XIII
Some of the Eidolon awakenings, but especially Fang's. Sazh's was good, Lightning's fit at the time, Snow was Snow, Hope was Hope, Vanille's would have been good if they hadn't squandered the backstory's telling, and Fang... just holds the idiot ball. It's like the developers realized she still needed to get Bahamut, but Fang is too aloof and sarcastic badass to really pluck away at insecurities, so let's just have her go full retard for a minute so she can have an Eidolon like everyone else. Absolutely ruined scene. She should have just joined with Bahamut already available - it would have made a lot more sense that way, considering she already became Ragnarok.

I can agree alot with both, I mean 13 had a good start but i found the train de-rails really fast and I found it got boring after the first 2 hours of gameplay....

13-2 I liked better but the ending ruined it for me and I wanted the next game to come out either VS or now 15 not another ff13 sequal.

Dark Cloud 2 (ruined moment)
Max meeting his long lost mother. He turns into a whiny crybaby, forces his mother to apologize for nothing, and then gets comforted by everyone for no reason. Much of the game was building up toward him finding her, and THIS is what happens? The game's story was mostly trash anyway but it stuck out to me as particularly bad.

Saw this digging through this log and figured I'd throw one in.

At the end after you defeat Noa's brother and free the mist from the land, Noa goes back to see her parents who had been guiding her and talking to her the whole game, but the town has collapsed and everyone there has died. Noa realizes that due to her own actions (along with her comrades') they were actually the ones to kill her parents.

So I was playing Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together and some of the Lawful events made me scratch my head... one part in particular...

In Chapter 2 in the law route, after the start of the chapter Cautia leaves your party saying that you have abandoned her, regardless of if you said things in support of her or not, then when you get her to rejoin you late in Chapter 3 going into Chapter 4 and you are trying to get her to join you she still blames you and will commit suicide even though you are forced to say her leaving was your fault even though she CHOOSE to leave the party of her own accord.
