Title: Kupoe Style Sprites
Post by: Kupoe on September 27, 2009, 03:22:14 am
My first sprite. Werd.

Its just a Ramza Shrine knight. I intend to add a cape to him, and once i figure out how to do Portraits ill add a portrait.

*edit*  if you see any errors, please tell me so i can fix em.  im like super new at this heh.

Looks like everyone's starting on Ramza! :P

Since yar new, I won't tell errors.
For me, just lessen the lightness of the brightest white in the clothes.
Finally, to check how good your sprite is, test it in-game!

Good start.

Yes, as Mike said, brightest white is too much, and good job in placing head correctly.

yeah? its at 225 atm, think i should drop it down to like 200 or so?

Lightness value at 225?
You should lower it. What's the lightness value of the next brightest shade?
The brightest shade should be 10 more than the lightness value of the next brightest shade.

i dropped it to 200.

on a side note.

now if someone would be so kind as to make a portrait, then the sprite would be golden.

Hmm.. quick sprite. :)
For this one, for Orlandu's cape, or the cape, make the second darkest color darker.
It looks too dull for me. But it's already fine.

Well, try making a portrait! You'll never know..
unless you try.. hard.. er..

yeah... i dunno about darker though, as it might look wierd on bright backgrounds?  eh i dunno.
i wish FFT sprites weren't 256 colors... i could make em look so cool.

but yeah about the portrait... how do i do one?

been thinking about it, and looking thru the game all the portraits are inverted, i dont know the significance of that... bleh.

The best way to start with portrait is Copy/Paste parts from the existing portraits. Learn from the existing portraits about shadings, outlines, and etc.

Here, check out this link: http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtop ... c&start=40 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2764&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=40)

There's a tutorial made by Smash on portraits from page 3 to page 10.
Hope this helps ^^

Yes, FFT sprites don't use 256. In fact, 16 only. :)
(well 256 for spritesheets: 16 max for the sprite, 16 max for portrait)

WAIT! I think you edited the wrong color..

hehe. yeah. editing the color is easy. having it not break on animation is the hard part for me... i have a nasty habit of wanting to draw stuff myself... pixel by pixel lol... thank god for clone brush.

but yeah. the 2 dark colors i have are brown, and charcoal.  if i edit the brown... the pic gets ugly.

on a side note, do you know the size of a portrait?

Yeah, I think so too, now that I'd take a closer look...

EDIT: The portrait's size is 32 x 48

hmm.  im trying to figure out how to draw a portrait and not break my sprite.  i wish i knew how to arrange the palettes so i could insert a portrait myself. cuz in paint shop pro, when i add new colors the palette auto's to 32 bit.  but if i insert it as is, and downshift it to 256,  it breaks in shishi.  i figure my palette for the portrait has to be in a certain area... anyone know how to shift the palette for the portrait down, to where its needed so it doesnt break in shishi, in Paint shop pro?

Use more exciting clothing colors than gray and dark gray. It makes the cape look like it's colored improperly and gives the whites too much brightness. Ramza wears blue, use that.

Like Mav said, use different colors. The colors are too closely related, making the sprite look undetailed and almost blob-like.

i was thinking about that. but im actually making the sprite themed.  nanten colors are red, hokuten green, and mercenary colors are grey white.

seeing as he is actually a mercenary, id figure id go with white.

just a small sidenote, always post your sprites as .png or .bmp,.jpg kills the sprite quality
Title:

it is in BMP, but photo bucket likes to change things to JPG when its linked. Right click and select properties on the image.

Here's what I started with using ShiShi's.
It's, RAMZA
The three basic colors and, my favorite color, lavender.
