Title: A Character a Week Keeps the Lucavi Meek! Gretchen Lethro!
Post by: Eternal on July 23, 2009, 10:59:25 pm
To kickoff my formal promotion to Script Writer/Collaborator, I have teamed up with LastingDawn to begin to introduce some of the characters of Mercenaries. Feel free to comment, discuss, and make wild guesses about the characters. With me helping to write the script, you never know what'll happen....

-RAD-
"I get a bad feeling about this..."

Full Name: Radcliffe

Age: 16
Birthday: December 30
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 163 lbs.
Blood Type: O+
Birthplace: Unknown (Gariland)

Young apprentice to Master Goffard Gafgarion, he enjoys a life of eating, drinking, and slaying as his master dictates. He is not one to take things too heavily, but knows when to be serious. His outward happiness belies an inner sadness, about his past and his parents....

-Expect a new profile every week, depending on how many characters get created!

This is a great feature! I will be sure to follow along closely. I'm also glad that Rad's bio sort of fits in with the quests I created, and the way that I perceived his role in the story. I like it. Looking forward to more from you guys :)

Very cool, man. Though why did you say Goffard Gafgarion? Are certain names being replaced with their WotL counterparts?

Again, this is very cool--I can't wait to see more.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on July 28, 2009, 05:12:08 pm
For me, at least, I'm going with the names that sound best. Probably just out of force of habit, though.

Besides, if we were doing WotL, it'd be Ladd.

-ALICIA-
"Traitors... debt unpaid!"

Full Name: Alicia Nilvox
Job: Gaia's Lance
Age: 20
Birthday: February 26
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 144 lbs.
Blood Type: B-
Birthplace: Fovoham Village
Loves: Camping, Training
Hates: Rad, Weak Men, Ghosts
Hobbies: Training, Reading, Chocoback Riding

Abilities: Aura, Divine Lance, Downsize, etc.

A young lady seeking to join the Konoe Knights, a guild of elite warriors steaded by Lady Agrias Oaks. Alicia grew up in a warrior's academy, however her only degree is in hard knocks. She uses the power of the earth itself to rip enemies asunder, as well as to protect allies.

Wow, fantastic drawing; simple, but effective. And her bio is particularly humorous: "Hates: Rad". Brilliant.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 31, 2009, 11:23:21 pm
I very strongly believe we'll see her at least once on a map filled with undead.  Should be fun and funny.  I look forward to it.
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on July 31, 2009, 11:43:17 pm
Very cool. I still really like this idea. Look forward to the next one (and more importantly, to this GAME, it's going to be phenomenal)
Title:

I'm just wonderin "hates Rad" and then "hates weak men" could this mean that Rad will be weak, or she just don't like him at all?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 02, 2009, 06:50:33 pm
Rad is meant to be... well he's supposed to be a complicated character, he's a fellow who follows his emotions. I can't say much more without giving away his character.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on August 02, 2009, 06:52:46 pm
Alicia's hatred of Rad has nothing to do with her hatred of weak men. Considering Rad isn't weak, and all... well, that's all I can say.
Title:

I think you guys may be interested in these whilst you wait for the surprise video. Or you might not. Enjoy. =D
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on August 03, 2009, 12:38:12 am
Tell me he is at least intelligent enough to not have grabbed or tried to grab Alicia's butt.  I'll guess that she got to disliking him during the infamous Zirekile falls scene, whatever happens in this alternate storyline.

Nice! Though the character images look vertically stretched, but no big deal. Those little descriptions are so great--you got a real talent for this.

How about something of a different variety, eh?

Fully agreed, if only it didn't cost so much money to keep up with, eh well...
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 03, 2009, 03:46:04 am
hmhm, Rad loves a certain Knight huh? I wonder wich  Knight is it, I vote for Lavian, but she is a Fencer though...
Title:
Post by: Eternal on August 03, 2009, 12:27:30 pm
Bah, stop outdoing me, LD! =O

Anywho, there wasn't much I could do about the stretched images, unless I had like Photoshop or something. I think I may introduce a card to go with each character Bio every week, depending on how people feel about it. I don't want to spam, or anything. =/
Title:
Post by: Eternal on August 09, 2009, 08:40:12 pm
Sorry about the delay, I was waiting for LD to come back to approve everything. =D

-RONDEL LEDNOR-
"I do so loathe the term 'assassin', since it is such a dirty word. I am not a dirty man, and thus I prefer to be called a 'Lifeflame Extinguisher'."

Full Name: Rondel Lednor
Job: Tempered Sword
Age: 49
Birthday: November 13
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 210 lbs... of muscle!
Blood Type: B-
Birthplace: Igros
Loves: Battle, Work, Outdoing Gafgarion
Hates: Failing, Being Indecisive
Hobbies: Fencing, Poetry, Shopping for new armor

Abilities: Holy Explosion, Dark Sword, etc.

An assassin who values battle and culture in equal lights, his glistening armor belies an egotistical and pompous attitude. Rightfully so, in his eyes, since he wields the arts of the Holy and Dark sword techniques. Despite his pompousness, he has his head on his shoulders and is not afraid to part yours.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on August 09, 2009, 08:50:04 pm
Also... his card:
Title:
Post by: mav on August 11, 2009, 11:54:35 pm
Holy crap! He looks so utterly badass.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 12, 2009, 12:50:23 pm
Pieke is certainly one of my favorite characters in Mercenaries, a "Lifeflame Extinguisher" with poise and finesse, his role is pretty interesting as well, he is definitely a recurring character in Mercenaries.

-LAVIAN LUNARI-
"It isn't for the puppet to think- merely act its role."

Full Name: Lavian Lunari
Job: Fencer
Age: 18
Birthday: March 23
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 120 lbs.
Blood Type: A+
Birthplace: Romanda
Loves: Studying Law, Sonnets, Chocobreeding
Hates: "I Want to be Your Canary", Malboros, Indecisiveness
Hobbies: Entering Tournaments, Falling in Love

Abilities: Nighthawk, Piercethrough, Blade Flurry.

A young Knight sent from Romanda to Ivalice as a result of a political standoff. She seeks love, but cannot seem to find "the one." Do not be fooled, she is no love-starved twit; she is a Fencer, her blade flicks about the air as a wasp, her sting as sharp- and as venomous.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 14, 2009, 10:48:33 pm
Hubba hubba. Mav approves, especially when it comes to her hobby of "entering tournaments"...

Is there any other info in the Gaia's Lance class? Basic equips etc.? Age?

Thinking of doing a rendition of Alicia, unless someone decides to assign me another task.

[Not trying to step on anyone's toes]
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 19, 2009, 04:19:27 pm
Oh, nevermind what I just said on the other topic... it was sort of brief to give people just a Basic description. I'll PM you the info, it'll be easier to keep the thread less cluttered that way.

EDIT: I meant regarding Blansch and Bolmna we can get to them later.
Title:
Post by: SplashWoman on August 19, 2009, 04:50:01 pm
Got it! Reminds me of a geomancer crossed with a Valkyrie [from SD3]

I'll see if I can whip something up this evening...AFTER studying flight procedures.... meh.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 19, 2009, 05:01:06 pm
No need to rush, hehe. Of course I have no idea at which intervals you work, in any case, can't wait to see what you bring to light!
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 19, 2009, 05:27:12 pm
Mmmmm Lavian is definitly one of my favorite characters from now on :D
Title:
Post by: SplashWoman on August 20, 2009, 05:31:56 pm
My plans for the evening just got edited, so instead of finishing drawing from last night.... its pool party then out to the bars.

So I thought I'd put up what I'm currently thinking/working on for the Alicia picture I'm doing....

I've got some info from LD though PM and have been using that and the pic from Eternal as reference and kind of going from there.

Purple - hair fluff
Red - High collar/ neck shawl
Blue - Those hanging thingies
Green - Armbands

Since she is very 'earthy' I am trying to do the fur/vines/flowers thing... she is going to be sitting on a stump... and again this is only partially done.

Ignore the hands/gloves, not really happy with how they're working. It doesn't seem very natural.

Also if I'm in the wrong thread feel free to move me. Any input is appreciated. If it is looking like I'm straying from the intent let me know.

whoa thats nice i wish youd draw a couple for meh lol
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 20, 2009, 07:08:09 pm
Hmm, looks good, just a bit... showy, I don't really mind the top part, as it's not too exaggerated, the bottom part though is a bit... much, I'm not much of a fan of fanservice, personally, but hmm... especially a girl like Alicia, I would expect her to be a bit more reserved.
Though don't get me wrong! This is far and beyond over my own expectations!

EDIT: Also the Mercenaries Art Thread would definitely be a more fitting area, mainly because it seems... not a lot of people reply in this topic, heh... so I'll copy your post and place it over there as well (mainly because there is no "Move Post" option for Mods.
Title:
Post by: SplashWoman on August 20, 2009, 07:37:33 pm
Sounds good on the forum move.

I'm also not done yet... I don't really have much of the bottom filled in as far as clothes go and its a fairly low dpi scan... the legs are there for reference mostly. Trust me the skirt and long boots will be there! It isn't Pantsless Fantasy Tactics after all... except for Buttpants Ramza of course.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 20, 2009, 07:41:57 pm
Haha! Alright, so that's just your style. I will amend my comment in the other thread, incredible work so far!

-MYAN-
"The emotions of the undead are pitiful indeed. To carry such trivial humors into such a wonderful anti-life..."

Full Name: Myan
Job: Dark Knight
Age: 35
Birthday: April 22
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 115 lbs.
Blood Type: B-
Birthplace: Trade City of Zarghidas
Loves: Roses, Romance, Fine Fovoham Wine (None of that Bacchus junk)
Hates: Abandonment,  People who lack commitment
Hobbies: Spellweaving, Sparring, Exploring the world

Abilities: Dark Sword, Night Sword, Obscurum

A middle-aged woman who has experienced life and love only to lose both. She is burdened by her inability to conceive and thus, her ability to start her own family. She adopted a young man from the Gariland Military Academy years ago with her then-lover, only to catch him with another woman. Because of this, she scorns love and rejects the idea of life, for her sorrow is deep and unending.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on August 22, 2009, 12:25:07 am
Could she not conceive because she was undead, or did she become dead later?  Either way, rough time.  Can those around her tell she is undead?  Does it strain how she is able to interact with society?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 22, 2009, 12:32:33 am
Despite how it's laid out and shown... she's not undead. Hehe, Eternal was a bit worried about that. No Myan is still alive, her quote is in reference to the feelings of the undead, she isn't referring to herself as one.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on August 22, 2009, 01:11:01 am

Actually what I put in bold is what made me think she is undead.
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 22, 2009, 07:23:32 am
I didn't get such idea Silvas, I think she just experienced happines of life, and losed it, that is why she rejects that idea.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on August 22, 2009, 11:57:42 am
Yeah, her "loss of life" is more symbolic than anything else. I was quite afraid that she'd be thought of as an Undead, and I guess my fears are confirmed. For the record, she isn't. XD
Title:
Post by: mav on August 22, 2009, 12:30:47 pm
If anything it's the "experienced life" only to lose it line that makes her seem undead. Though reading through her bio and other info, I just got the idea that she's had a pretty hard life and her current outlook is kinda downtrodden. She sounds very interesting though; her dark outlook on life coupled with some bad experiences and a "bad" job will certainly make her a character to keep an eye on.

Neat drawing, by the way.
Title:
Post by: SplashWoman on August 22, 2009, 12:31:00 pm
When I do a rendition, I'll give her a Cursed Ring.

Bam. Undead.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 22, 2009, 01:16:07 pm
Good point, it is highly misleading, but "life" is in reference to livelihood, and the sorrow part... well maybe we could have been a bit more ambiguous with that.
Title:
Post by: CronoStorm on August 31, 2009, 09:08:10 am
This is very nice looking, fellas, very nice. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Is it too obvious that I would like to see Crono from Chrono Trigger included? =D
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 31, 2009, 01:22:43 pm
He will *probably* make it into some sidequest somewhere down the line, heh. With a timeline as confuddled as his is I think it seems almost reasonable to end up partially in Ivalice.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 10:00:27 pm
Alright, I apologize for their not being a character last week, so to supplement I'll give a riddle so you can guess who it may be.

"Legends in their own right,
from humble beginnings,
they have seen their share of battle.

They each fell in the same place,
Their origins paint their fate, swift.

Their birthgiven names mangled,
Now their roles have changed.

Personae unfamiliar, foreign even.
Though to one of careful observance,
They are seen plain as day."

To whoever answers this correctly will be given a custom battle scenario not yet released! (Savestate of course)

Is it one person? Might it be more? What do the lines allude to...
Title:
Post by: Skip Sandwich on September 01, 2009, 10:31:08 pm
is it
Rafa and Malak?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 10:36:08 pm
That it is not, good guess though.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 01, 2009, 10:40:32 pm
from the context "they" and "legends".
They fell on the same "place" (meaning same group?)

QuotePersonae unfamiliar, foreign even.
Though to one of careful observance,
They are seen plain as day."

Just don't get this ^
That means they are not common, but plain!?

-
Gallione Triumvirate?
Mercenaries?

haha. Sorry.. That's all I know.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 10:45:54 pm
Another good guess but no, it is not. Also "they" may not reference a group or even two people it may reference someone's recurring role throughout Ivalice or the FF games altogether.
Title:
Post by: mav on September 01, 2009, 10:50:56 pm
The Lucavi?
The Judges?
Meh, I'm terrible at this...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 10:51:40 pm
That it is not, the Judges eh? Odd that you should mention them...
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 01, 2009, 11:00:21 pm
Okay. Analyzing the riddle again.

Quote"Legends in their own right,
from humble beginnings,
they have seen their share of battle.

The character must be a hero of some sort, the char must come from past FF.

QuoteThey each fell in the same place,
Their origins paint their fate, swift.

Does this mean the character come from FF Origins?

QuoteTheir birthgiven names mangled,
Now their roles have changed.

Hmm.. since in mercenaries, Ramza's role was changed, so
the char will then change role, too. Birthgiven names?
mangled? CID?

QuotePersonae unfamiliar, foreign even.
Though to one of careful observance,
They are seen plain as day."

Cid is plain any day, seems like a foreign name in any FF..
The personae is unpredictable.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 11:09:06 pm
Very good guess, but slightly flawed analysis, the answer isn't Cid.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 01, 2009, 11:17:18 pm
I'm thinking about the first two pars..
Hmm.. "Legend" and "Origins" are likely to mean the char came from FF2.

Is it Firion?
QuoteFirion decides to join the rebels to exact vengeance upon the empire.

Hmm.. but that doesn't change his role.

but he doesn't fit the 'plain' context.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 01, 2009, 11:23:38 pm
Another good guess, but no it is not Firion.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 01, 2009, 11:31:02 pm
My other guesses:

Egde
Faris
MOG!

okay. time to go to class.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on September 02, 2009, 12:33:30 am
The temple knights or whatever they are called that Delita joined?  If they all were people originally recruited the way Wiegraf was, then it would seem to fit.  That or the Death Corps, or Wiegraf himself.
Those are my best guesses for now.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 02, 2009, 12:33:36 am
Heh, none of the above.
Title:

I did overlook your post I must admit, sorry about that. Though the same applies. It is not the correct answer.
Title:

I thought you would overlook it, but it's nothing to apologize about.  I thought you would from the timing.  We posted in the same minute.

Dang, back to the drawing board.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 02, 2009, 01:43:32 am
I somehow get it.

ZACK??

zack has a sprite and a portrait here.

Quote[FF7] Cloud's alterego of a sort. He was the real SOLDIER; Cloud just thought he was one. A confused Cloud took over his job, so to speak, and his persona, after Zack was killed by Shinra soldiers. His parents live in Gongaga

Fits with the context 'roles have changed', 'fell on the same place', unfamiliar 'persona'. He is a soldier, therefore he can be a mercenary!
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on September 02, 2009, 01:44:51 am
No, it is not *shiver...* Zack.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 02, 2009, 01:58:30 am
Argh!!

Balthier!?

QuoteReal name: Ffamran Bunansa.
Mangled name.

Sephiroth.
QuoteSephiroth is arguably the most popular villain of the Final Fantasy series

Plain as any day? will change his role? a soldier, with a close tie with cloud.
His name is foreign. (Hebrew).
In the context, I think 'they' resembles the soldiers, which includes Cloud. They are in the same place (same FF). They have the same origin.

In FFT: here:
QuoteWhen Cloud is transported to Ivalice by a device called the Celestial Globe in Final Fantasy Tactics, he comes out confused and disoriented. The first thing he says is "The heat! Inside my skull... No, stop... Sephiroth---no!" The Final Fantasy VII boss does not actually appear in the game, though a black-caped swordsman is mentioned in one of the Errands.

Lol WOW. Palom and Porom? Really? Was I the only person that absolutely despised those little bastards?
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on September 02, 2009, 09:10:24 am
Hmm.. I'm starting to think they are the Warriors of Light. But who are they!?
Yes. Possible.

Warrior\s of Light. 'They' don't have a predetermined name, and persona.
They are pretty common in FF (plain as any day). The name 'warrior of light' is common. It can be a reference to a group, or a single character. I can say they have the same origin, and they are legends! He or 'they' is the original protagonist of FF, therefore they are legends, very. FF (humbly) began with them.

Further Analysis:
QuoteIs it one person? Might it be more? What do the lines allude to...

If this is a hint, therefore the answer should be the Warrior/s of light.
And the riddle always have the word "THEY", and, can still refer to one person.

They were never given exact birthgiven names (therefore, mangled). The player gives their name, foreign even. (FF3)

I can say they are legends, and they have the same origin. (ex, in ff3, they were orphans). Absolutely, they were destined to fall in the same place. They were references to many characters, so, their roles have changed.

Also, I assumed Sir LD has played Dissidia, where Warrior of Light is a character. He don't remember his name, definitely, and his ending is coool.

He'd be a very interesting character.

AM I RIGHT? :(

--
but based off names and popularity, Gilgamesh is a good choice.
Though I think the desc. fits Sepiroth and Cid, too.

The "black caped swordsman" mentioned in the Errands is The Phantom Thief Zero. In any case Balthier and Sephiroth both make cameo appearances, but are in no way important enough to become Main Cast members, hehe.

Haha! They are in Mercenaries yes, but Aeris is a deceitful "Flower Girl" who enjoys killing people with various poisons and Cloud is her estranged boyfriend who is just as insane as she is.

Quote from: "Dormin Jake"Palom and Porom!  That's my official guess.

Very nice guess... but I don't quite recall their names being mangled, unless you count FF9.

Also can you tell me how they relate to the riddle themselves?

Quote from: "MiKeMiTchi"Hmm..

Nice and detailed guess! But as the Warriors of Light had no name, there is no way there names could be "mangled".

Quote from: "Skip Sandwich"i've got it! it's Namingway! haha, no really, is it Biggs, Wedge and/or Vicks?

A great guess! But could you give me a bit more reason why you think it's those fellows?

Quote from: "Sephiel"Gilgamesh would be good, no ?

Gilgamesh is in Mercenaries as a reoccuring sidequest character, but he plays no part in the main story. Good guess though.

I can't believe it! hahaha. I'm still wrong..

Wedge and Biggs, cause they ARE recurring characters to different FF games.
They are thieves\soldiers, their names have different translations.
Namingway on the other hand,
is the NAME changer. :P

good guess.

Could it be obvious answer that is probably wrong: Ashley Riot and/or Sydney Losstarot?

Quote from: "LastingDawn""Legends in their own right,
from humble beginnings,
they have seen their share of battle.

They each fell in the same place,
Their origins paint their fate, swift.
Their birthgiven names mangled,
Now their roles have changed.

Personae unfamiliar, foreign even.
Though to one of careful observance,
They are seen plain as day."

These could fit Ashley and or Sydney one way or another, except for the mangled names bit, the only way I see that one fitting is if Ashley had to change his name to hide, but I don't think he would need to with the "darkness" with him...

Very good guess! Shows great knowledge of Vagrant Story, but that is not the case, I'm not even sure if I could have them as cameos for how Vagrant Story takes place Long after FFT and by extension FFT:Mercenaries.

QuoteHaha! They are in Mercenaries yes, but Aeris is a deceitful "Flower Girl" who enjoys killing people with various poisons and Cloud is her estranged boyfriend who is just as insane as she is.
Wow, you really do hate FFVII.

Hrm...  Beowulf doesn't have a mangled name unless it is his last name, and I don't recall the last name of the original Beowulf of legend.

Cúchulainn's name is butchered in the original translation of FFT, and he was a hero with very humble beginnings in the original legend.  I do recall hearing he spewed some sort of poison cloud when in one of his berserker rages, so the poison tie-in would be plain enough to see.  Oh, and the name is further mangled in that Cúchulainn isn't his name to begin with and everyone knows him by his nickname.  Then again, that would rule out "birthgiven" wouldn't it?
Title:
Post by: Archael on September 02, 2009, 02:19:03 pm
I like Queklain because it is a name unique to FFT, where Cúchulainn already has origins elsewhere

the "mis-translated" names in original FFT gave us some very awesome, unique names, names we haven't heard before in previous games, and the PSP WOTL re-translation ruined alot of them because of this

Ramza, Delita, Zalera, Velius, Queklain, Izlude, Vormav (badass sounding), Rofel, are VERY original names found nowhere else in any video game, movie, or book

but then you get a name like Cúchulainn or Belias and it's not unique to FFT at all, and is rather un-original

this is one of the reasons I think the FFT script is better than WOTL's

well, Biggs and Wedge appear as bit characters in many of the FF games, the "legend in thier own right/from humble beginings/They have seen their share of battle" could be reffering to this reappearing role. They already appear in FFT, in "birthgiven name mangled" form, as Viggs and Wezalef, both of which are defeated in the opening battle, in the original story, they simply die there, if they don't in mercinaries, and return again, then they have certianly "changed role". "personae, unfamilliar, forign even", means that they will be written as pretty much original characters, making it even harder to draw the connection between Viggs and Wezalef to Biggs and Wedge, but the "to one of carful observance/they are seen plain as day" hints that there will be sublte alusions to thier other characterizations, that the canny observer could pick up on.
Title:

It's fine to have original sounding names, but when something is clearly a mistranslation, it's not the same.  Cúchulainn and Belias are VERY obvious mistranslations.  The others were perhaps mistranslated the second time around, or which translation really didn't matter as far as one being "correct" and they could have stayed the same.  Sure, argue in favor of those, but I can't agree with the obvious mistranslations.

Then again, I suppose Belias might be of the latter case sense I don't see how an L would be turned into an S.  Both Belias and Velias might be mistranslations, or Velias was never meant to reference Belial.  Perhaps I'll concede on his name, considering the difference between all three names.  I am still quite convinced that it should be Cúchulainn though, as phonetically the names are identical or close to it.

Fantastic analysis! You are 100% correct. Biggs and Wedge are going to be main cast characters! Though not in the Vicks and Wezaleff way...

Allow me to fully explain each line...

Quote"Legends in their own right,
from humble beginnings,
they have seen their share of battle.

This was more in reference to FFVI where they show up as two guards escorting Terra to the Esper. Though it can also be an allusion to the beginning of FFT.

QuoteThey each fell in the same place,
Their origins paint their fate, swift.

In both FFVI (and FFVII I believe?) and FFT, Biggs and Wedge both die near the starts of their respective games, this is what is meant by "Thier origins paint their fate, swift" they aren't around for long, hehe.

QuoteTheir birthgiven names mangled,
Now their roles have changed.

Vicks, Wezaleff, are two mistranslations of their names, indeed. This what I had meant by their "birthgiven names" the reference was horrible askewed because of these mistranslations.

QuotePersonae unfamiliar, foreign even.
Though to one of careful observance,
They are seen plain as day."

This one is the most cryptic, but what it means is that they are to become characters that Are in FFT, but were not important in the least, this will expand those characters roles. But until I have the accompanying picture (which should be sometime this week...) I won't be revealing exactly who they are. Great work everyone and thank you for participating! I will have that unique battle scenario sent to you in a weeks time Skip Sandwich.

Also feel free to surmise who those characters are, Hint: It's not the boys at Orbonne Monastery.

Yes, in FFVII, they are two of I think three "generic" members of the terrorist group Avalanche, and they are killed just before the final sequences in Midgar begin before the party finally leaves town and starts exploring the world.  Did they die in FFVIII?

Title:

ALSO SPOILERS, A LOT

Just looked it up.  They live through IV, but die very early in The After Years.  They die very early in VI and fairly early in VII.  They are recurring fights in VIII and never do die.  They are Blitzball players in X and X-2.  They are two incompetent guards in XII, and there's only one chance to see them.  They make an appearance in Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2.  They are shopkeepers in Kingdom Hearts 2.  That is a lot of appearances.

Belial / Belias is like ultra ripped off generic insert evil demon here name

it is supposed to be Cúchulainn, no one is arguing otherwise

I am saying that Queklain is an original name and Cúchulainn isn't, like an accidental benefit to the first mistranslation

This isn't the thread for this, Eternal imitates the WoTL style (which many will agree is very Shakespearean in it's execution) and thus I have no problem with it. Besides your complaint before this was the mistaken translations of the names making "unique" name. Unique or not, they were still translation errors. Also the fellow who translated WoTL was the Same Fellow who translated Vagrant Story and FFXII, you even said that there were a few parts of VS that sounded like WoTL.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on September 03, 2009, 05:17:35 pm
Although I am trying to imitate the WotL style, it'll be slightly more... comprehensible for those who aren't necessarily fond of the WotL style. Thus, it'll be in that style but not to the extent that it was in WotL... if that makes any sense. For an example of this, compare the Aftermath video to some of the cutscenes in WotL.

BTW, if anyone has any issues with the script they see in any of the videos, feel free to PM me. I don't bite... much. =P

Mercenaries has a very well-written script. As easy to understand as Vanilla's and more colloquially eloquent than WotL's. WotL was very flowery and it occasionally came off as alienating and trite; Mercenaries manages to come off as polished without appearing cliché.

Eh heh... icks-nay on the timeline.... ay? In any case that was one of the reasons that Square came down on Crimson Echoes and May I Say for any record Real or Imagined, that I am not attempting to Fit this into Any Timeline or to make it Canon in the least bit. It is a "what if" plain and simple. Everything else is just pure conjecture on the parts of myself and others, it is just building off of the mythos that Matsuno left behind.

"False history gets made all day, any day, the truth of the new is never on the news."
"History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth."

There is still just too much pillow shading on this. But a while ago Smash did a redo of this portrait's hair, and it looked awesome. Find that in the sprite thread and mess with it and I think you will get much better results. Minus the pillow shading though your additions where good.

I personally don't like his version, in my opinion it makes her look too "normal". Also it takes away the regal air she's meant to portray I feel. Now I do like Mike's version of it as well, it enhances her character and makes the portrait more accurate to the sprite itself.

Damn hurricane!? What the?
Good thing there's no classes for the week.

Although the artwork was nice, I was hoping to see new characters! :P
It's me, coz' I don't know much about those characters in Mercs and Vanilla.

Oh that is awesome! As I hinted to in the riddle, Blansch and Bolmna are the NEW Biggs and Wedge! Biggs Blansch and Wedge Bolmna, excellent work Winshmo! Look fantastic! I also love how you made them look their age! That takes a lot of skill!

EDIT: Also I hope everyone's okay I heard the flooding in the Phillipines got very bad.

So they will actually be part of story? I hope they won't appear and die as it was in FFVI :D

Wow. Never thought they would be the new biggs and wedge. :(
Definitely interesting.

yah, at least there based on FFT though, they appeared in so many different games it may be confusing to create a sprite for them.

Post by: mav on September 30, 2009, 06:57:10 pm
Whoa, that's neat, LD. Definitely didn't expect Blansch and Bolmna to be Biggs and Wedge. What a twist.

Oh and very awesome picture, winshmo. I like the solemnity and pride evident in the picture. Great job drawing these seldom seen characters.

the old Biggs and Wedge were boring, but new Biggs and Wedge rocks a lot

I wouldnt expect such chracaters for such characters, the drawing is great
it really portrays both charaters, btw, did you get this idea from somewhere,I remener someone comments about Blansch and Bolmna as Biggs and Wedge on FFT Remix section a long time ago

Sidenote: Old Biggs and Wedge = Viggs and Wezaleff, the archers from the very first battle of the game

Post by: LastingDawn on September 30, 2009, 10:11:11 pm
Yep, that's a slight bit of what the riddle was saying as well, but did Zozma say they were going to Biggs and Wedge? If so I feel pretty bad for taking his idea then... though I could have sworn we came up with different names for them.
Title:
Post by: mav on September 30, 2009, 10:30:23 pm
I was under the impression Zozma was still looking for names and surnames for Bolmna and Blansch, respectively...

I'm hyped, because of the MANY playable characters! (where my dreams come true, like in Suikoden)

no, my biggs and wedge are not at all the same, and are not even associated with each other because Vicks IS Biggs i stuck with the ff6 translation. (thinking of giving him brown hair now) Wedge has not yet made an appearance in my patch yet.

Its true I do not yet have surnames (or just dont remember) for my Bolmna and Blansch. so nothing to feel bad about you didnt take any idea from me here.

Oddly enough... no. This is how Past Myan will look, but current Myan looks similar, but looks a lot less innocent and a bit more forlorn then her past counterpart.

Thanks guys ^^!  And yeah, Myan looks too young in this pic, I'll try making one with her helmet on and let her have a more, 'seasoned' look.. I'm sad that I may have to cut her braids :(

without the spikes and fur.

I'm gonna have to get used to the idea of Biggs and Wedge as first names...they sound so much like nicknames to me right now. Anyways, great job--these two sound interesting and Blansch's background sounds brilliant.

Who did RONDEL LEDNOR replace. Also I was messing around with shishi's a couple minutes ago, and discoverd Rad was not listed as rad, but I figured he had to be stored seperatly. Then I noticed 58-5C are all squires, stored seperatly than "male squire". It made me curious which one was Rad. Anyways, awsome job! I'm excited.

Hehe, well Carrot is a mainstay of Ivalice (bar Vagrant Story), so it's no surprise that Carrot would have a bit of a following.

Excellent work Winshmo! He looks as dignified as I had hoped, we will wait for a few other pictures though before we continue you on with the poorly named "Character of the Week" to assure that we might actually have two characters to introduce in the span of two weeks or even more possibly, hehe.

HOLY FUCK.

This is seriously one of the best pics you've posted yet (which is saying a lot, since the bar was set rather high). I love the eyes...and the detail on the tentacles...fuck it, I love everything about this. Fantastic work as always, winshmo.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on December 06, 2009, 05:13:01 pm
Haha! With such artistry Squolar's character really comes to life! As Mav has said this is among the best works you've done here! Incredible Winshmo, I cannot wait to see what you come up with next!

And Kage, that is a nice start, but Squolar's actions will be more or less those of a human's sprite, but hmm... everything missing would have to be custom made... eh it's not much to worry about. Make a unique portrait Kage and his sprite will be good to go!
