Title: Inquiry
Post by: CidIII on June 12, 2008, 12:24:00 am
Anyone know why there is two sprite files for Mustadio?  (GARU.SPR & MUSU.SPR); which one does the game use, they are both in 'BATTLE'.

Also, anyone familar with which sprite file (.SPR) contains the sprite map of Cleotinne? (Un-sure on spelling, but he is the Sorceror, the white robed Shrine Knight)

And, if anyone cares I am currently in the works of making a General Leo from FF6 type character sprite/job class.

Any information is much appreciated. ;)

They are both used, one used a guest and the other is used in your party. Changing one will have slight repercussions, I believe the one you want to replace is Musu, not Garu.

Alright thanks again.

I have another question how come when I try to fill a part of the sprite with a different color, for instance I tried to do green and instead of green it did a very dark almost brownish green, no where near the color I chose?

That would all depend on the tool you are using, I would guess anyhow.

Well, I have used Gimp and did a paint bucket fill, and then I even tried paint and that did the exact same things.

Hmm... well applying a color yourself could be trouble. I would stick with the palettes given colors and switch only those colors around, delving outside of those could be the problem.

Well the green I'm using is from Luso's character so it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, if there are more then 12 colors on one character palette, the game will act oddly or not work at all if I recall. I would stick with the default character's palette, unless the default character is Luso of course.

So you're using GIMP try opening the Dialouge section and open color map there you can change the sprite's pallete.

And it's 16 max colors, not 12.

Also, portraits use different palettes.

Alright, so the 'Dialog' thing worked. Thanks =).

But I'm changing the shape of the sprite's head that shouldn't have any effect should it? Any negative effect in-game I mean.

the game loads body parts in a rectangular shape, IIRC most human sprites have like 2-3 pixels over the head that can also be used. If you want to be sure, as long as you keep editing withing the horizontal and vertical lengths of of body part, you're gonna be alright.

Anyway you can always see the result in the newest version of shishi. If you don't, download FFTPatcher again.

Alright I've just been shaving one pixel column of the side of the head because he's kind of bald. So I should be good.

Also, I might run into another problem it appears the bitmap file has grown in memory to 10 MB ;(. That will probably be a problem won't it?

that's not normal, your bitmap image should be:
256x480
8 bits (256 colors)
~121kb

Oh yeah, and never used a color that isn't already there, if it isn't change a color of the existing palette to what you want.

Oh, never mind it is 123 kb, GIMP was reading as 10.8 MB, probably from all the changes I was making ;)

Why can't I add a color?

Because the format of .spr files is 4bit (16 colors) while the BMP file is 8bit (256) just so that it can support all the 16 palettes. Because you can't make a BMP file use 16 palettes of 16 colors while saving the image in a 4bit format.

So in the end it condiders the 16 palettes as 1 palettes, and unless you wanna get errors when converting, you shouldn't use more than 16 colors for the sprite or more than 16 for the portraits.
