Title: Reliquian Palette
Post by: LastingDawn on August 10, 2009, 12:01:36 am
Well Mav and MikeMitchi have done a great job giving the Reliquian a personality with his portraits! 12 palettes to choose from! That's far too much for me! Now this poll will decide the six as chosen, the five most popular portraits will be the palettes chosen for the sprite itself.

This poll will go for seven days and seven days only.

12

nothing like a white elite-looking generic for a fifth palette
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on August 10, 2009, 12:55:43 am
I went with four, but there are many nice options!
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 10, 2009, 02:12:22 am
The default should be #1.

Then my runner-ups would be..
#2, 4, 8 and 12.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 10, 2009, 02:18:20 am
I would almost suggest the default being something other then #1. No reason to make it look like the FFII character.

Voted for 11
I like it
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 10, 2009, 02:23:00 am
#11 was my choice because it is a color that you don't really see that much of in normal FFT.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 10, 2009, 02:34:35 am
I see. I should have changed my vote!
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on August 10, 2009, 03:06:33 am
8. Tis my favorite color. Looks nice.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on August 10, 2009, 03:10:54 am
4 looks like it fits in fft , then 1, the rest need slight alteration in shading
Title:
Post by: mav on August 10, 2009, 12:28:55 pm
In my opinion, the lighter ones all need work, when it comes to shading. There was a huge oversight made on my part, though it may not be so easy to rectify.

Anyway, this is a tough vote--I'll have to think about it.
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 10, 2009, 12:57:02 pm
I vote for 10
Title:
Post by: Zaen on August 10, 2009, 03:07:50 pm
8, dark green is definitely my favourite.
Title:
Post by: FFMaster on August 13, 2009, 06:40:25 am
Voted for 5.

Do you plan to do this poll again with the 2 most wanted options?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 13, 2009, 09:59:09 am
Oh no, simply the five with the highest votes will be chosen, that's all.
Title:
Post by: Xifanie on August 13, 2009, 10:00:49 am
why not 8?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 13, 2009, 10:03:34 am
Well that's a good point, but isn't that hack still slightly unstable? I recall Zozma saying something about a freeze when he used it. Though I'm to assume you fully tested it?
Title:
Post by: Aquablack on August 13, 2009, 10:05:04 am
I rather like Palette number 7.
Title:
Post by: Xifanie on August 13, 2009, 10:09:00 am
I never managed to reproduce his bug, let alone cause unwanted effects using my fix.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 13, 2009, 11:53:43 am
Well then, it's worth a shot, hehe. 8 Palettes it is.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 13, 2009, 12:33:39 pm
Eight palettes?! Wow, how ambitious. Won't this mean that every generic will need to have eight palettes then?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 13, 2009, 07:17:18 pm
Yes... yes it will. Though most of these classes need sprites rather then palettes, hehe.
Title:
Post by: crystal on August 14, 2009, 05:35:03 am
Teh final one.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 14, 2009, 01:20:10 pm
Hmmm...with palettes 1, 3, and 12 all looking like they'll be used, won't it get a little redundant? A beige palette, an off-white palette, and a white palette...I dunno, I just thought I should mention this before it gets all wacky.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 14, 2009, 01:21:36 pm
Regardless, everyone liked Something, haha! Not a palette that wasn't anyone's favorite. That is testament to your talent.
Title:
Post by: Kaz on August 15, 2009, 04:54:17 pm
I liked 5... just seems to fit the look of it

oh and hey guys I'm back!
Title:
Post by: mav on August 17, 2009, 12:07:24 pm
Welcome back.

If the eight palettes are ready, I can hop to recoloring the actual sprite now--each sprite sheet shouldn't take more than two minutes or so. Though I'll wait for feedback before I do all of 'em...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 17, 2009, 01:14:31 pm
Yep, the top 8 is what you want, that would be...

4,5,12,8,11,1,2,3

Well, looks like everyone liked something! Great work Mav and thank you everyone for participating in the poll.

Also, welcome back Dwib.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 17, 2009, 02:49:10 pm
Okie dokie, it took more than 2 minutes, since I had to do a very small bit of sprite work and replace on color (though it's not noticeable) on the portrait. So we have...31 colors total. That's what it's supposed to be, right?

So first up: the most popular palette (and the one I voted for), palette number 4.
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 17, 2009, 03:14:49 pm
Looks dirty to me, but don't get angry, it's just my opinion
Title:
Post by: mav on August 17, 2009, 03:15:25 pm
Dirty as in the sprite isn't done well or dirty as in the color choice is very brown?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 17, 2009, 03:24:25 pm
Personally I think it looks very fitting, as it is a very desertish robe, plus the glint of gold on the sprite shows him to be more then he appears.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 17, 2009, 03:28:40 pm
Heh, funny thing about that gold--when Miroshi designed the sprite, he used a kinda gold color scheme for the face and some various pieces of armor and outlined the cape with various shades of brown. So certain parts of the sprite will always look the same, regardless of the robe and jewel color...Once I post some other color schemes, it'll become infinitely clearer what I mean by this...

Also, did I do the portrait right? I wasn't sure whether it uses a black background or some other color or what, so I just guessed it...
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 17, 2009, 03:31:05 pm
I was talking about color, sprite itself is great.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 17, 2009, 03:34:28 pm
Ah, well the brown scheme is supposed to be dirty, kinda like a lower class beduin or something...When I picked some of the palettes (especially the original six), I envisioned them as desert people, nomads, travelers; dirty robes, heavy clothing, a sort of mystic air to 'em, etc.
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on August 17, 2009, 03:36:33 pm
Well if that what's he supposed to look like then ok, I thinked of him more like Minwu-style.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 17, 2009, 03:48:28 pm
Ouch!  Thanks for reminding me, no, no... the portrait is wrong, unfortunately this was from an earlier version of Shishi, I'll place the actual order up,
Title:
Post by: Archael on August 18, 2009, 01:21:15 am
this is one of those sprites that's going to look MUCH MUCH better in the actual game

mark

my

wooooooooooordddddsss
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 18, 2009, 02:17:07 am
So, let's test the sprite out! :P
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 11:28:45 am
Hmm...why does that sprite have only 15 colors? I see that the turban has been modified, but do you recall if any colors were removed for any reason?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 11:51:39 am
Hmm? Not to my knowledge. I doubt there was really a reason, I think working with all 16 should be fine.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 12:45:04 pm
Alright, well here's the completed sprite for Palette #4. 31 colors, PNG format...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 12:47:00 pm
Looks good and everything is set to right!
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 01:06:46 pm
Alrighty--if it works properly in game and there's nothing left to do on my part I can probably go ahead and do some, if not all, of the other palettes...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 01:08:52 pm
Though it's only 31 colors because of the portrait and Sprite colors combined, right?
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 01:11:31 pm
Yeah, the black background on the portrait makes it 31 colors. Should it not have the black background? I mean, black is for transparency and portraits generally have that beige background instead. If I need to make that change it'll take less than a minute...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 01:12:47 pm
Oh well that makes sense, good point.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 02:14:33 pm
Well, assuming I did the other one correctly, here's Palette #5, also 31 colors.

Again, if there are problems, they won't take long to fix: the only reason I'm "releasing" these so slowly, is because I'm wary of any problems that I'll have to fix in bulk...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 02:18:21 pm
Oh, you can clearly see the gem in this one, looks great!
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 02:33:26 pm
Has anyone tested the sprite and portrait in game? I'm curious as to how everything is turning out...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 02:36:01 pm
Oh, well we can't quite test it with the portrait not being... hmm... well that might not be true, I'll try it.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 02:44:56 pm
Alright, yes it can't be tested without it being a 256 color bitmap, otherwise the loss of color info is too great when converted.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 18, 2009, 02:58:01 pm
Alright, so should I re-save it as a bmp then? And is there anything else that I can do?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 18, 2009, 03:08:26 pm
A 256 color.bmp would be the best option yes, with copying the portrait palettes color to the 9th spot, if you're using Graphics Gale.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 18, 2009, 07:40:20 pm
I would gladly help.
I tested the Gambler sprite before.

I can do it again. I'll try the palette #5.

EDIT:
POSTED THE PICS IN THE RELIQUIAN THREAD!

Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 18, 2009, 09:46:40 pm
Well, I attached the palette here.
But, the it's on the Sprite#1 slot.

But no worries...
Title:
Post by: mav on August 19, 2009, 11:03:16 am
Sorry, I was gone most of yesterday and FFH wasn't letting me access anything. It looks as though there's been some discoloration on the black ones...

I've attached Palette #4 as a 256 color bmp. With the first row of colors being for the sprite and the ninth being for the portrait.

And I've also attached Palette #5...they should both be correct, let me know if they aren't.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 20, 2009, 10:22:25 pm
Hmmm...What do you guys think of Palette #12?
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 21, 2009, 01:08:42 am
It's bright, and I like it. :)
Title:
Post by: mav on August 21, 2009, 09:42:01 pm
Since this is technically a palette related question I'll ask it in this topic. Which of the three sprites in the attachment best matches the portrait? The first one (the one on the left), the second one (the one in the middle), the third one (the one on the right), or none of 'em? If none, what should I do to make it match better. And keep in mind, this palette will appear in game...
Title:
Post by: dwib on August 22, 2009, 12:07:40 am
If I had to choose it'd be the first one because it's the only one that doesn't look like it has a ninja turtle's palette
but really none of them match well... although they don't neccessarily have to
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 22, 2009, 02:17:28 am
I'd choose the second one.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 22, 2009, 04:25:35 pm
All palettes are now complete, in order of popularity. Though only a handful were tested in game, I did review all of 'em in Shishi.

Some people feel that the sprite itself has some blemishes and problems, if anyone would like to take the BMP and modify the it, please be my guest. I've also attached the SPR file.

If anyone wants to test these out in game and post a video/screens, please do so. I won't have too much time to work on these personally, so if anyone would like to, don't hesitate.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 26, 2009, 04:37:40 am
That's great. I'll test it sometime. :)
Didn't know you already finished it, too.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 26, 2009, 01:50:02 pm
Meh, there are bigger, more important things going on in this forum than the palettes for this sprite.

I've attached an image of all the palettes of sprites and their portraits...but something looks off. Input on the colors themselves is fine, but I'm too terrible at spriting to do anything else.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 26, 2009, 05:49:19 pm
Imo, it's fine. Really. Just need some appreciation.

Though I think, the 3rd, 5th and 8th sprite look identical.
Title:

Quote from: "MiKeMiTchi"Though I think, the 3rd, 5th and 8th sprite look identical.
Yeah, I mentioned my concerns about this earlier...Three and eight definitely look alike. I'll make changes as necessary...I guess. :P
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 26, 2009, 10:14:42 pm
IMO, keep the 3rd one, then change the 8th to the next highest voted palette. :)
