Title: Production Art.
Post by: DarthPaul on August 28, 2009, 08:59:14 pm
So I talked with it with LD and now I am doing a series of production pics for Mercs.

The releases here will be free handed and little shading/texturing will be on them.

Touched up versions of them shall be released with the completed patch. When that happens.

Till then enjoy.

First up is the gambler.

Heh, this project has so many great artists; I'm happy to get to see all you guys' work.

Anyway, neat pic, DP; the very lax expression on his face is downright perfect.

Agreed. It's pretty awesome, and it does very much capture the gambler persona.

I want to work, too. On this.

Thanks Mav and Zaen. I got the expression on the first try. Was hesitant to elongate his smile, but it came out how I envisioned.

Also Mike I have no qualms if you would like to help.

I have also made a gambler art, and I will probably scan and post it here after a while. :)

Zefane.

Not satisfied with him though.

Working on the warder, but I have yet to find a solid base idea for him.

Thinking of using that pic Curu posted as the base.

Definitely interesting, not what I was expecting, hehe. It is very fitting to the character though and still accomplished in your own unique style.

Heh, he looks like he's wearing sunglasses. And he's got a similar demeanor to the Gambler.

Gonna go against the grain here and say I dont like them. I'll go you one better, and say why.

The first picture has little bearing to scale, his hand and the cards are way out of proportion to the rest of the picture. His right arm looks like its been broken (seriously, check it out, where the belt buckle is, it rises up with the belt buckle, and then violently down).

To top it off, his right arm is in a literally impossible position. From a realistic perspective, his arm has been twisted 200ish degress to a really awkward position, and then he has to turn his actual hand from facing himself, to facing outwards to throw the card. Doesn't work like that.

His left arm is also... well, a good deal shorter. That in and off itself could be a matter of perspective, but remember scary movie 2? the creepy dude with the "strong hand" ? Yeah, it looks like that according to your picture.

Your picture isn't bad, it's just not "good". The main thing you need to learn is perspective. Potentially you even do what I used to. Ie, have a really cool idea for how something should look, start drawing it, and having it turn out, maybe not completely different, but certainly not quite as you pictured it in your head.

It's the same deal with me, I can't do perspective to save my life, it's why I don't draw anymore because I could never learn it.

Re; Second drawing; Holy fuck what happened to his legs.

TL;DR. it has flaws.

Nice one Mike.

I will say this first. This gambler pic looks exactly as I wanted too according to the style I used. Don't get me wrong though I appreciate the criticism.

The right arm buckle is supposed to be rigid. Hence the cloth acting weird. I could have made it obey gravity better though.

The left arm is tucked behind his back so the hand with the dice cup is tucked next to his side. Should have worked the shoulder better for it, but it is of no real consequence.

Maybe I'll do a female gambler this afternoon.

I'm totally putting off finishing coloring the Alicia.... I hate coloring.

Do we have any other material for the female gambler?

I don't think so. I've been working on her since the male, but I am never quite satisfied with the style I give her.

Aww... that is adorable! He's so chibi yet very fitting to the role, I think only Yoshida's style could make such a thing where this picture could fit both roles.

It doesn't look like cloth DP. None of his outfit does. It doesn't look like the arm is tucked either; it looks gimpish, small and shoulderless. This is a good basis from which to start when learning how to draw properly but I honestly would not go around promoting Mercenaries with this.

Akihiko Yoshida, character designer for FFT, Vagrant Story, and FFXII, if I'm not mistaken.

These are free hand I did in my waking hours. I said they were getting redone. Also if I need to learn to draw the colleges are giving out degrees in art like candy.

I appreciate your opinion, but that post was rubbish and didn't say anything that Tithin didn't already state.

Warder.

Halfassed the shield. Still brainstorming how I want to embellish it(the shield).

dp, I think you should draw slowly. The warder's sprite isn't official yet.
Nice effort though. I'm glad you're helping. :)

^ I like the eyes used;

If the sprite isn't official yet, then maybe they can get something from my pic. That is why it is production art, though I have taken your advice and slowed my pace. With so many artists better than me I can definitely get away with it.

UPDATE:

I didn't give up on this I was just discouraged a bit by others submitting works that by far surpassed the quality I was submitting. This lead to me trying to outclass them (juvenile I know) and I ended up with some works that are way to bogged down with detail.

I threw them into my file under "Reasons not to get worked up again" and started reworking them in my less bogged down more modest style I have been doing. I think I have a warder to be proud of but I'm going to try my hand at shading it before submitting.

Also to keep you happy till then I did a banga concept in biology.

Potion/Hi-Potion/X-Potion of course.

and the sheep's blood is probably just for kicks.

Quote from: "Voldemort"what in the world are those notes up there?  0.45% salt?

It was a lysis experiment in which we introduced sheeps blood to three different unknowns. Then throw observation and deduction we figure out what the substances are. The salt refers to the salinity of the unknowns. If the cells exploded then the solution is hypotonic to the cells. If the cells stayed the same then they where isotonic to each other. If the cells imploded then the solution was hypertonic. Two of the solutions where salt water while the third was saline aka saltwater.

Afterwards we synthesized potions from the solutions like Zodiac suggested.
