The Lounge / Tales of Phantasia: patch release
December 31, 2012, 04:23:58 pm
http://tales-cless.org/

After almost a decade of work, Cless, the lead on the project, has announced that an english patch for the PSX version of Tales of Phantasia will be released today. This might not be the most epic, but certainly the most persistent effort of a modding/translation project I have ever heard of. I would personally appreciate any support you could show Cless and the Phantasian Productions site by trying out the patch.

Note that I have no personal involvement in this patch, but have simply been a long time fan who has been impressed by the work done on this project.

Decade of the Zombie:

Halloween is approaching, and one of my favorite parts of the holiday (now that I'm not allowed to go tricker-treating) is the annual FFH Halloween Spriting Competition. The theme of this particular competition is Zombies, and this is for a number of reasons. First, because Halloween is the zombie time of year. Second, because FFT currently lacks an actual generic zombie sprite (no Zalbagg doesn't count). Third and most importantly, because zombies have completely taken over the US. There are tv shows, shirts, blow up dolls, underwear, freaking everything. I feel like this all started about 8 or 9 years ago and things have turned into zombie feeding frenzy of marketing. I'm guessing that in about 1 year though the market will be so saturated that there will be a major backlash and zombies will stumble and moan back into obscurity. So while I'm sure we are all pretty sick of zombies, I say we finish out the Decade of the Zombie with a bang.

For a low tier entry in this competition I would recommend taking your favorite character or class, and zombiefying them. Zombie Zalbagg would be the most piss poor example of this, and I expect better from our community. Rotting flesh, exposed bone, and all kinds of other decay are encouraged. More intrepid spriters may attempt a full on zombie, completely unrecognizable from it's base class. Plus, don't forget that humans aren't the only living things that can be zombiefied. Similarly undead demons such as vampires, skeletons, and the such would also work. The theme may seem limiting, but as always creativity and stretching the bounds of the theme are encouraged.

This is once again a beginner's level spriting competition and even if you have no spriting experience this is a great chance to give it a try. Feel free to post multiple versions of the same entry to get feedback and improve upon it, just insure that the final version meets all Submission Requirements. See the contest thread in the Spriting Section for official rules and additional details.

Jacking Cheetah's original post here.

We will not be using WotL names or anything derpy like that.

This will play out the same way as something like CoP, however will also include a NG+ and certain materials that can only be acquired randomly
after you've beaten it once or twice. It is not meant to be a very long mod and instead is supposed to be more focused on replayability, more is
avaliable the more you play it.

Spriting / Instructor Darlavon
August 06, 2011, 03:17:25 pm
Well here is a quick concept for a pretty easy sprite for Darlavon. He is a minor character, but we have a great portrait for him so we might as well give him a sprite as well. I'm sure there are some patches that could incorporate him. I have no intention of being able to finish this on my own, especially since I finish hardly any sprites, so all help is welcome. I have already talked to Nojgaard about helping. Right now he is a combination of:

Knight Body
Weigraf Hair
Dycedarg Beard.

What do people think of the basic design and palette? I'm really happy with his head and hair color. The black gloves and boots are working decently well. In his portrait it appears he has a brown cape. It kind of looks like he has Weigraf's scarf as well, but I'm not sure how to incorporate that into a design.

Alma Gets a Job!

We have a total of 24 valid entrees into this Spriting Contest, this is an incredible turnout. The results of the vote will be announced at the time listed on the poll. Only 1 vote per user, please do not vote using alt accounts and it is generally considered poor form to vote for your own sprite. Please refer to the judging criteria for guidance in voting, though it should be noted that all the following sprites are considered valid entrees. Feel free to discuss or ask questions in this thread, however there is no need to post how you voted.

If you submitted a sprite that is not on this vote list, and you do not believe is failed to meet the submission rules, feel free to PM me with questions.

Judging Criteria:
1) Creativity: This covers both the job idea and the physical design of the sprite. Find original, intelligent, and witty ways to follow the general theme of the contest.
2) Artistic Ability: The more original elements incorporated into the sprite the better. However, make sure to balance this with the visual quality of the sprite. General pixel art ability, design, and palette choice are important here.

News / Official Sprite Competition: Alma Gets a Job
July 04, 2011, 02:22:11 pm
Alma Gets a Job:

One of the most popular FFT spriting endeavors is to put Ramza's head on a different sprites body. Following in this tradition it is time to give Alma a bit more attention and give her a real job. Take Alma's standard head and find her a new body. One of the standard FFT female jobs is perfectly acceptable or she can have any other kind of job. Making Alma a standard chemist could be amusing or she could be an Assassin from Assassin's Creed, creativity is key. Making alterations to Alma's head such as giving her a crown or some sunglasses is also perfectly acceptable. Additional guidelines and submission format can be found under the Submission Requirements header.

This is a beginner's level spriting competition and even if you have no spriting experience this is a great chance to give it a try. Feel free to post multiple versions of the same entry to get feedback and improve upon it, just insure that the final version meets all Submission Requirements.

Submissions are due by midnight of the 20th of July. On the 21st all entries will be organized and a public voting poll will be opened for every community member to cast a vote. The poll will have a clearly indicated end time of the 24th to celebrate Alma's Birthday. The poll will be blinded and all users are allowed one vote, please respect the voting process.

Exact awards for the top three entrants are still in development. Expect at minimum some kind of permanent recognition for your accomplishments. Do not expect a particularly tangible award, such as something you would receive by mail.

Submission Examples (Ramza as model):

Minimal Submission: Simple Headswap. A submission of this quality will likely not fair well. However, a creative job title or a slick palette change here could help.

Job Title: Evil Squire
Sources: Ramza Ch1 (SQUARE), Delita Ch1 (SQUARE)

Average Submission: Headswap with added elements from other sprites and palette. With this mix of elements the sprite should still be relatively quick and easy to put together, but should also allow for a lot creativity and gives people an opportunity to show off their skills. Note that this rating is based on being all original work, this example sprite is the work of Vanya.

Job Title: Defender
Sources: Ramza CH2&3 (SQUARE), Zalbag (SQUARE)

Superior Submission: Using pieces from lots of different sprites or custom elements and palette. Really show off your mad skills. Note that this rating is based on being all original work, this example sprite is the work of Kagebunji and Cheetah.

Job Title: Hunter
Sources: Ramza Ch1 (SQUARE), Male Archer (SQUARE), Male Knight (SQUARE)

Spam / Present for Dome
April 23, 2011, 06:54:41 pm
I was listening to some Rob Zombie and was inspired to do this. It could be better but it is what I could throw together quickly. When I first saw Dome working on a new Avatar I thought of this and decided to take a stab at it.

I have been around here for a long time. Started off with spriting, then heavy on event editing, and then moved on to hacking in general. I have been a moderator of the forum for well over two years, though my activity has dipped considerably since I started grad school for my PhD in Clinical Psychology two years ago.  I will fill in my "Resume" later.

I am always happy to give tips and help out as time allows.

I'm posting this for two reasons:
1) I'm super proud of my animated Avatar and sig and wanted to brag.
2) I'm going to Eastern Europe for two weeks and wanted any who cared to know so people didn't think I disappeared on them.

Ultimately I think I will just use this introduction thread for personal announcements and comments, mostly because I have too little time to devote much time to IRC to get to know people well there.

Spriting / Hunter
January 26, 2011, 04:56:47 pm
This sprite has been worked on by many people. Started by Kage or R999 and I'm trying to finish it up with a custom hat with the help of others. Most of these posts come from Kage's sprite topic, I'm just separating them so that we can focus and get this sprite done.

Here is a very fast WIP of what I was thinking for a different hat. You can see the original "green beret" from FFT that I used as a base. Oh and I'm not a fan of all the brown on the Assassin. I think she would look a lot better with no headband and a belt or stitching on her dress.

News / All Prior Bans are Null
December 15, 2010, 03:50:06 am
In the spirit of new beginnings all previous members of the FFH forum who received a temporary or permanent ban are no longer blocked from accessing their accounts or the forum. This in no way reflects the judgment of previous leadership in making correct decisions in banning these members. This decision is less about the individual members who were banned and the severity of the infractions they were accused of, and more about establishing a solid foundation of rules to help re-foster the community at FFH. We now have concrete rules to be followed and a standardized process for administering consequences. All members, old, new, past, and present, will be held accountable equally to these new standards.

Spriting / Japanese Spriting
April 29, 2010, 03:23:02 am
Okay so here is an official topic for collecting spriting done by our overseas partners. Really it is kind of ridiculous that we haven't formed a better communication network than we have. Zodiac made a major step of creating a forum for them, but then we made the mistake of NOT CHECKING IT!!

http://jp.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopi ... 5&p=83#p83

These have been setting on our servers for months. So post links to japanese sites, or others, that have FFT sprites that weren't created here so that we can at least keep these different resources organized even if we don't have great communication with them. I know that we have these links laying all around in this section, but it is always impossible to find any of them when you need them.

Bugs and Suggestions / Forum Sprite Editing
February 13, 2010, 07:51:18 am
So I was thinking about ways that I could do more hacking at work (not exactly a great venture but whatever), and I starting looking for online pixel editors. I didn't spend that much time but I found this:

http://www.splashup.com/

Kind of a buggy super light version of photoshop, and while a bit of a hassle it did what I needed it to after some experimentation. But I thought it would be great if the forum could incoorperate a tool like this for quick edits of sprites and portraits that people are working on. Showing is easier than telling, and if the tools to do it where right there it would likely really improve everyone's productivity. Might be a bit far fetched, and obviously I'm hoping there is something out there that could be built into the site because actually programming such a program would be a little over the top.

Just a thought of a way that the forum could become even more of a tool for hacking.

January 31, 2010, 12:27:12 pm
My wife and I just got a new dog yesterday and we need to decide on a name. Taking votes for a name for our new dog (his rescue family called him Bernie): "Oki" (short for Okami - the video game), "Mal" (short for Cpt Malcom Reynolds from Firefly) or Gizmo (from the video game Professor Layton)...wow, can you tell we are a couple of nerds? Or if you have any suggestions...

Spriting / FFGaiden Sprites 光の4&#2
December 03, 2009, 11:00:58 pm
First off I Japanese in the title in the hopes that some infamous Japanese portrait artist might actually take notice since he has been doing Final Fantasy Gaiden portraits lately. Plus I needed a spot for my FFG Thief also known as Master Thief Zero.

So this is what I have so far, all key animations and walking. A few different mask angles and some fixes to the wacky Balthier sprite and this will be ready for a version 1 release. I'm am still trying to see if we can fit a red sash on him. By my count he only has about 12 or 13 colors right now, so there are definitely colors there for it. If we can figure out a sash then it will likely just be a second version. Oh and I need help with a portrait. So if anyone is willing that would be great. Between Balthier and three available thief portraits it should be pretty doable, though the eyes may be tricky.

Oh and if anyone wanted to do some quick gif previews of the walking animations that would be appreciated, I am having an impossible time with it without Adobe software.

Thanks to Seushiro and Jimmy for contributing to this sprite.

The Lounge / Wedding Music Help!!
June 03, 2009, 03:48:48 pm
So please take this seriously guys, this is a chance for the forum to repair all the damage that my fiancee believes it has done to our relationship.

My wedding is in what 4 days and we haven't organized a playlist of music at all yet. So what I need is some good dance song recommendations so that we actually have some music going during our reception. So fun upbeat stuff with only a few slow songs. If you want to post some as a joke please just say it is a joke so that I don't spend too much time searching/listening to it haha. Oh and if you can link me to a good list of wedding songs that would be good too.

Remember this is for the dance floor and reception, not walking down the isle. All help is very much appreciated!

The Lounge / 100 Pushup Challenge
March 13, 2009, 02:43:37 pm
My Fiancee found this online and thought it was interesting so now I'm trying to see if I can reach a hundred:

http://hundredpushups.com/

I did my initial test a week ago and did 40. So I started on week 3 in the program.

Day 1: I was supposed to do 14,18,14,14 and then at least 18. I did 14,18,14,14 and just managed 18 with a short break.

Day 2: I was supposed to do 20,25,15,15 and then at least 25. I did everything barely and once again had to take a short break on the last set to get 25.

Day 3: Is 22,30,20,20 and at least 28. I'm going to try them in a few hours.

Has anyone else done this or want to try?

PSX FFT Hacking / Attack.out Battle Event Conditionals
January 21, 2009, 10:44:06 pm
Battle Event Conditionals:

What: These are the instructions that dictate when a particular event script is executed and what needs to be happening for that to happen. Without these no events would ever happen and by manipulating these you can change what needs to happen in battle for an event to trigger or even what is required to win the battle.

Where: ATTACK.OUT x014E70 - x016AF3

How: Event Conditionals are complex and can have many variations in their length and formatting. The general format and function of any single instruction is split into three basic sections; Boolean Checks, Character Conditions, and Script Call. Not all these sections are required however for all instructions.

Boolean Checks: The first section checks to see if any relevant booleans have or have not been called, this is used for sequencing the events correctly and for player driven choices. The booleans that are being checked for generally come from previously executed event scripts. Note that this section is optional, but only if the battle is very straightforward. There can also be multiple Boolean Checks in a single instruction.

Length: 6 bytes each

01 00 BN BN BC 00

BN BN = 2 byte ID of the Boolean being checked
BC = if 00 checking if boolean not present, if 01 checking if boolean is present

Character Conditions: These are a collection of many different instructions which look at a particular character or conditions on the battlefield as a whole to know whether the Event should be triggered. The length of each character condition is specific to the kind of instruction it is dictated by the first byte. There can be multiple of these instructions, the limit is currently unknown, and they are generally required except in some cases where only a Boolean Check is used to trigger the event.

Unit Present = 04 00 ID 00
Unit Alive = 05 00 ID 00 01 00
Unit Dead = 06 00 ID 00 00 00
Unit Health Percent Less Than = 08 00 ID 00 PC 00
Unit Next Turn = 0B 00 ID 00
All Enemies Dead = 16 00
Unit At Coordinates = 18 00 ID 00 XC 00 YC 00 00 00

ID = Character ID# as designated in related ENTD file
PC = Percentage, enter as hex
XC = X map coordinate in hex
YX = Y map coordinate in hex

Script Calls: Designates what script is to be run if all the conditions are met. Required and always follows the same format.

19 00 EN EN

EN EN= 2 byte Event Number

Examples:

Example 1: Normal

Orbonne Monastery
ENTD: 183

01 00 FD 01 01 00 19 00 04 00

Orbonne Battle (Gafgarion and Agrias chat)
01 00 7F 00 00 00 01 00 80 00 00 00 04 00 17 00 04 00 34 00 0B 00 17 00 05 00 17 00 01 00 05 00 34 00 01 00 19 00 05 00

Orbonne Battle (Abducting the Princess)
01 00 80 00 00 00 16 00 19 00 06 00

First Line: Checks that boolean "FD 01" is present and runs even script "04 00". This is the standard opening of every event or battle.

Second Line: Checks that booleans "7F 00" and "80 00" are not present. This is because part of the event that is run with this activates boolean "7F 00" so that this Event Conditional will not trigger multiple times. It checks that "80 00" hasn't been run because that is the end of the battle, preventing this script to be run after the end of the battle had occurred. The game then checks to see that units "17" and "34" are present, checks that it is unit "17" turn, and that units "17" and "34" are both alive. Then runs event "05 00", which happens to contain the boolean "7F 00" so that it will be considered present.

Third Line: Checks to make sure boolean "80 00" is not present. Checks to see that all enemies are dead. Runs event script "06 00".

Example 2: With no Boolean Checks

Dorter Trade City1 (Victory)
16 00 19 00 24 00

Example 3: Creating Choices and checking for Booleans

Araguay Woods
ENTD: 194

01 00 FD 01 01 00 19 00 7A 00

Araguay Woods (Kill enemies)
01 00 7D 00 00 00 01 00 97 00 00 00 19 00 7B 00

Araguay Woods (Save Boco)
01 00 7D 00 00 00 01 00 97 00 01 00 19 00 7C 00

Araguay Woods (Boco KO'd)
01 00 7D 00 01 00 01 00 7F 00 00 00 01 00 80 00 00 00 01 00 97 00 00 00 04 00 80 00 06 00 80 00 00 00 19 00 7D 00

Araguay Woods (Boco Killed)
01 00 7D 00 01 00 01 00 97 00 01 00 01 00 80 00 00 00 04 00 80 00 06 00 80 00 00 00 19 00 7E 00

Araguay Woods (Boco Saved)
01 00 80 00 00 00 16 00 19 00 7F 00

General summarization: Event script "7A 00 called in the first line contains a choice to either save Boco or not, if saving Boco is chosen the Boolean "97 00" is triggered. The second and third Event Conditionals are checking which choice was made by looking for the Boolean and activating the event script that matches the choice. The forth line has an event activating when Boco dies, but since it is checking to make sure Ramza didn't choose to save him nothing major happens. However the fifth line activates if Ramza did choose to save him and Boco died, and activates an event script that causes a game over. Just a quick run down of how choices can be made. Note that Booleans can be checked way down the rode and not just in the same script, so make sure you are clearing them and calling them appropriately using event instructions.

Various Notes: The deep dungeon Event Conditionals have some unknown instructions at this time. It is likely that there are many other Character Conditions, but these are all the ones used by the game outside of DD. It is also possible that Boolean Checks are just another Character Condition as instruction "01", but it is easier to define them like this for now since they always follow this order if they are present.

Event Conditionals List

What: These are the instructions that trigger the various events during battles. An example would be Delita telling Ramza to be careful on Ramza's first battle action at Magic City Gariland. These might even be part of executing special events that require a specific character in your party (like having Mustadio to get Work 8 ). I have separated them and ROUGHLY labeled them to what event they relate to for easier reference.

Where: In ATTACK.OUT after all the normal event instructions. From address  x014E79 to approximately x016B1D.

Structure: In ATTACK.OUT these are all just one big long line of hex because each instruction is variable in length. They are in order though, according to the first two byte which references an event ID, and they all end in 19 00. I have organized it so it is readable to better decode these instructions. I have listed the event/battle where these instructions denoted by the ENTD ID (which you can easily match up to FFTPatcher). Additionally the first two bytes of each line represent the event ID which you can find in the decompiled PSX script using the event decompiler/compiler. So if you wanted to know what event "Orbonne Battle (Gafgarion and Agrias chat)" 05 00 you could search "x005" and find it in the event script. Or instruction "Underground Book Storage Fifth Floor (Rofel and Ramza talk)" 32 01 you would search "x132".

How: So that is the trick, we really have very little idea of how these work and that is what we needs everyone's help with and is the reason I am making this topic. By watching and playing battles hopefully people can figure out what the exact trigger is for an event to go off. Likely examples are characters first/second turn, unit gets to a set percent of hp, unit dies, certain number of turns pass, or any character of the player's takes an action. You can get hints by looking at the ENTD for the battle and looking at all the different units' IDs. Some of the bytes in these instructions are definitely unit IDs and the others are likely conditions. I think we are going to need a lot of help with this, but with enough people helping out I think we can completely decode these instructions and have more control over custom events. I would recommend starting on the simple ones and from there we can recognize patterns and move on to the longer ones.

PSX FFT Hacking / Final Fantasy Tactics has two disks!?
September 08, 2008, 07:08:36 pm
So I was wondering if there was ever a demo of FFT released in the US or Japan? If you know the answer that would be great, because it could be a useful resource. But while searching I ran into an interesting piece of info:

#  SCUS-94221 : Final Fantasy Tactics
# SCPS-45087 : Final Fantasy Tactics [Disc1of2]
# SLPS-00770 : Final Fantasy Tactics [Disc1of2]
# SCPS-45088 : Final Fantasy Tactics [Disc2of2]
# SLPS-00771 : Final Fantasy Tactics [Disc2of2]
# SLPS-91435 : Final Fantasy Tactics [PSone Books]
# SLPS-02768 : Final Fantasy Tactics [Squaresoft Millennium Collection]

This is from the official list of all Sony Playstation games released with their serial numbers. The first one is the us version of the game. But why oh why do some of the other versions have 2 discs? I search around on the net for a while trying to find the answer, but with no luck. Please help me out with this, it probably isn't anything incredible but it might be interesting.

Spam / Cheetah is a fucking dumbass
July 25, 2008, 06:29:57 am
So I have been doing all these sprites and portraits for like 6 months now and I use Photoshop as my main graphics tool. I just realized tonight after trying to do a color limiting on a quick portrait palette swap that I have been doing my color reductions incorrectly. So basically I have been having this one selection saying "Force Black and White" and basically that removes two colors that I could have been using for other stuff... So when I only get 16 colors to work with I was limiting myself to 14 without even realizing it.

All it really means is that a few of my sprites and portraits get to be a bit prettier, but I still feel like a dumb shit. Especially considering I made this discovery at 3:30 AM.

Spriting / Metal Gear Solid Sprites
May 27, 2008, 11:15:07 pm
Well I guess I'm a little bit more excited for MGS4 then I thought, because I spent a lot of time on these two. Most of credit goes to Vanya and McCracker for the sprites, I just put a lot of work into the portraits. The sprite for Old Snake is just a palette swap, but unfortunately the portrait for Old Snake can't be easily done with just a palette swap. If for some reason someone really wants these two as one sprite, I might look into fixing it. Otherwise here they are, please tell me if they aren't working or you have any suggestions.

War of the Lions Hacking / Unknown files
May 25, 2008, 02:06:33 pm
Here is a description of all the files unique sized files in the Unknown folder of War of the Lions. I just have a quick description of each, maybe someone else can say how they match up to the PSX names.

fftpack31 = Mission Objectives, plus some random weird pointers at the top and font samples before each mission objective.

fftpack889 = Looks like preview shots of all the maps. I couldn't get a good look at them, but they seemed to just be small black and white pics of each of the areas battle maps. Not sure how they are used.

fftpack19 = Location Names, I believe for all the battle maps.

fftpack938 = Appears to just be data

fftpack936 = opening logo pic?, maybe specific to the PSP version

fftpack770 = Something interesting, has some sprites, maybe portraits but I think it is compressed or something because I could get any of it to look right. This is probably what needs to be looked into more.

fftpack881 = data

Files that are 128KB = Map textures

That is it for now. Everything else is just map textures, spell effects, or I think data. I'm thinking this is where a lot of the new content is stored.

The Lounge / Now Playing

Common interests, common hobby, common games? Share what games you are currently playing, and give and get ideas about what games you might want to try.

Mostly Monster Hunter Freedom 2 since I needed something for long plane rides. I love the series, but not as good when you can't play true online.

Trying to finish up a playthrough of FFT: Lion Wars. Also giving Vagrant Story another try, one of the most complicated games ever.

Also might get back to playing Dragon Quest Swords and Tales of Symphonia on my Wii.

Well I'm going to New Zealand for three months so I'm going to be out of touch and not contributing to the effort while I'm gone. But when I get back I will finally have a PC that I can use to do this stuff and will be touching up sprites like a mad man. So good luck to everyone while I'm gone.
