Use of ePSXe before 2.0 is highly discouraged. Mednafen, RetroArch, and Duckstation are recommended for playing/testing, pSX is recommended for debugging.

Its quite simple, like chess with jrpg twist, but I am in FTT for years but I guess it smoother to play it with someone who play FFT earlier.
