Whilst rummaging through some older posts a while back, I came across a version of an unhooded short haired meliadoul and decided i would finish it; and then maybe tweak it into something new.
my progress thus far:
\o/ New spriter!
Haha, yeah, I'm gonna try to be; the only downside is for awhile I have to use someone else's computer, which is tedious at best :/
welcome! It's looking good! Keep it up! Let us know if you have any problems/need any pointers. Is the sprite supposed to be her with bare arms? I think it would be better if she stuck with the golden plate arms. Or if you're going for the bare arm look I guess that's your prerogative.
Yeah changing all those arms is a pain in the ass. I'd just copy/paste the short haired heads onto a clean Meliadoul sprite sheet and go from there. The golden armor arms do look good...
young meliadoul! XD
The arms are what make it unique. We already have an unhooded Melidoul with golden arms.
... Albeit the version I contributed had red hair, and may not be "true" to the unhooded version of Meliadoul that many seem to envision. Perhaps I did wrong in making her a red head?
nope, yours is hot imo Tojoe.
Hah. Well, thanks. See, I still lurk around, here and there. Been busy with other stuff to not make anymore contributions.
Sorry for the unquick reply...like I said, access to a computer for me at the time is severly limited...

Thanks for the warm welcome and support! And to answer the question; yes, the bare arms are intentional; it gives a further element of exposure and uniqueness to said sprite; I also plan on editing the palette for further diversity, but the basic edit of the sprite should be done by this weekend, I'm looking forward to your critiques!

And I suppose it could be a younger version of her :D and maybe she decided to wear her hood to mourn over izlude....
Progress so far:
I see what you're doing, you're changing the top part of the arm armor into the skin shades and the glove black. However, you are making her look way too beefy. She looks like some kind of body builder / big woman. That's fine but I always imagined Meliadoul to be actually kinda skinny like her body indicates. I like the head though, reminds me strangely of Alma for some reason. Keep it up and good luck!
I noticed when I zoomed in that the darkest shade of her hair is a greenish tone that is too light. It would look a lot better if it were the same hue has the other shades in her hair but darker.
If you need more colors to work with, you could now replace the gold shoes as well with black (which might be bad since her dress is black) or green. You should then have like 2 or 3 new colors to work with...perfect for getting a right dark shade for the hair for example like Lijj said.
he'll have even more colors when there are no more golden arms too.
That's exactly what I mean, I think the shoes share the same gold colors as the armored arms. If he gets rid of gold altogether, damn you got some room to work with! You could do a lotta new things.
I could get rid of the shoes; the only reason I didn't was due to the fact that if I use the same shade for the shoes as I did for the gauntlets it would look like part of her frock; which would be awkward.
Case and point: (i edited her basic colors to a bluish purple btw)
I dig it. The hair still has that greenish-gold color in it though :/

I got rid of the hair color and supplemented a darker tone from Delita's sprite to make it blend in more; I still can't seem to make the shoes good however, so I turned them a reddish hue in hopes of maybe being able to give them some aspect of uniqueness; I'm almost done with the basic editing however.
That hair colour you replaced the green-y brown Lijj mentioned earlier is far too similar to the other dark brown. You might as well just make both colours just 1 colour, means you have more space in the palette to do what you like.
The back view hair isn't looking as good as it does on the front, the shading looks very different, take a look at other sprites and see how the shine (ie. the brightest colour) should look (Delita's hair is an example you should not look at).
But its looking alright so far, just remember that the palettes for the sprite and portrait are separate (and generally the same colours on the sprite aren't used for portrait and vice-versa.).
it's finally done: the palette has been changed; the hair from the back view has been recalibrated to match the front almost perfectly; and I've done some cleanups:
So I opened it in shishi's to look at the frames and the hair looked bad then I realized that it wasn't because the hair's bad. It's because the colors are wrong:(http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8192/meln.png) So worry not it's only because the sprite can't read from two colors being used from the portrait's palette:(http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1497/paletteissue.png)
You may have to sacrifice one red to fix this. The best thing to do is just keep the BMP at 16 colors until you're completely done then add the portrait.
Yeah and use existing colors from other sprites, and color it only with Palette Editor...
Not too bad though...
I know nobody cares, but I'm a completionist and now that I have a computer to work with anytime, I figured why not try to get back into spriting, so I finished this one, corrected it with all errors fixed, etc. I figure now that I've done a pretty much basic headswap, I'll try to see if I can't do a full body transformation, sans the palette errors this time. :o
(I also included the WLDFACE.bin and UNIT.bin files in case anyone ever would (doubtfully) want to use this sprite.) :P
Woah woah woah stop ITT! You are really downplaying yourself here. You've finished an entire sheet! congratulations. I think people will use it. I really look forward to seeing what you do next.
Doesn't look bad at all! Only one thing which isn't worth changing since its so super time consuming, but her upper arms still look like armor, sure they're skin color now but those cannons for upper arms make Meliadoul look like a body builder. That's my only gripe and 2 cents.

all the knightswords are big 0.0
anyways. I found an old sprite of Penelo on some Japanese site and I edited the colors to be more FFT-esque and changed the portrait. I'm wondering what you guys think, again, I'm completely open to critique, and editing.
Well, definitely major fix needed; like shadings, depths, etc. Her pants could reference from Cloud, for example. Same goes to her portrait; major shading fix required.
Well, I fixed the portrait up a bit, focused on other characters' shadings. But, I don't know if the sprite itself is salvageable, no matter what I seem to do, the only thing that I can fix up on it definitively is the hair. The body, especially the torso, is bothersome. The pants are somewhat salvageable, but it makes the chest and feet look bizarre. Should I just start the whole thing over?
My opinion would be start fresh.
frankenportrait other portraits :D
Or just use this for the portrait:
I honestly don't care who Penelo is or what game she's from, but I googled images of her and I agree, start fresh. Her pants and body look kinda like Rafa, I suggest you use her as a base and then add in the head/hair. Try to use 2 or 3 blue/purples for the pants, 2 or 3 reds for the clothes, and then 3 or 4 blond/yellow and whites for her hair and eyes. Look at Ramza's hair color, its close enough to what you want. You should have around 5 or six colors left over if you do this, use like 3 for the skin and 2 or 3 for the shoes, or just make the shoes red like her shirt thing. Technically not 100% accurate but saves colors, hope this helps!

Where'd that portrait of Penelo come from?
The hairstyle in ultrawolf's Sprite of Penelo just doesn't seem like it belongs to the Penelo from FF12:

sorry for bringing up such an old post but i really want to use this penelo sprite. does anyone know how long it would take to make the sprite use fft type colors and make it playable ?
