Title: The Lion War 2.03 & TLWotL FAQs
Post by: 3lric on September 28, 2019, 08:59:34 am
This will be updated as new questions come up, currently I'm just posting what I project to be the most asked questions.

What emulator should I use?
Psxfin or Duckstation are recommended. Other emulators have incompatibility issues.

I can't see the Guests in my party, what gives?
Those four Guest slots are converted to normal party slots, expanding the base roster size from 16 to 20. As a result, Guests never actually join the party. You'll still get their normal starting gear as War Trophies as the game goes on, though.

How do I get to see the Agrias Birthday Event?
You need to land on any Town or Castle on June 22nd, with at least 50,000 gil and both Mustadio & Agrias in your party, unbenched.

We don't have the derpy extremely OP lipstick item in the PSX version, what do I get for the Agrias Birthday event?
A permanent +10% PA/MA based on her current raw stats.

I can only use 2 of Ashley Riot's moves! Help!
Yes, while Ashley Riot has 10 abilities in his skillset, he can only use 2 at a time, based on the type of weapon he has equipped. You can view the specific weapon requirements in the ability descriptions. This is why Ashley Riot comes with innate Equip/Change.

What are the requirements to unlock the Dark Knight job?
Level 8 Knight & Level 8 Wizard.

Why can't I preview the Dark Knight as a male when a female has unlocked it, or vice versa?
The Extra Job hack we use uses the Unused Gender data from Bard and Dancer to create the additional class. As such, you will not see Dark Knight for preview on female when unlocking it as a male, and vice versa. This is not a bug. It's the way the hack functions.

Why doesn't the Dark Knight spillover JP seem to work correctly?
As mentioned in the previous question, the DK jobs are making use of the Bard and Dancer slots. The female DK is the female Bard, and the male DK is the male Dancer. To fix this would have required something along the lines of turning the Bard into the Male DK, then making the Bard become one of the "new" jobs. While that might have looked better from a player standpoint, it would likely have caused some confusion for modding purposes, since TLW is supposed to be a base mod for others to build from. Information in the wiki about where the Bard's data is would no longer be accurate, for example.

Is the Onion Knight generic job in this mod?
No, it isn't. The Dark Knight job was hard enough to add on its own, and besides, the WotL functionality of the Onion Knight was so awful, there really isn't any interest in including it even if it was feasible to work on it.

Did you guys add in the increased JP cost for abilities and such from WotL?
Only in TLWotL.

Will the new items from WotL ever be in TLW?
Very unlikely. There is currently no way to expand inventory space, and even in WotL those items can't be distributed like normal ones due to the weird way they were added in. On top of that, those items are unnecessarily OP as it is, so we don't consider them vital to the FFT experience.

I learned every ability in a job, but it's not showing up as Mastered - what gives?
Beat the game to find out more.

Barrage is doing things differently than it does in WotL.
Correct. The code for Barrage was not copied & pasted directly from WotL - it was made from scratch for TLW. Known differences (for the 2.03 version of the hack) are:
Known differences in previous versions are:

When do the Rendezvous battles unlock, and what rewards do we get for beating them?
See here (https://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?msg=231697) for the list of Treasure Wheel loot.

What are the changes between TLW and TLWotL?

Is it me, or is the difficulty of TLW easier than Wotl?
I remember having difficulty in the random encounters in Wotl 😅😅

When Elric and I were discussing this, the plan was to make it level 8 Wizard and Knight.

The WotL requirements for Dark Knights are complete bullshit. Unless you're berserk frog farming or getting a LOT of multiplayer in, you simply will not unlock the job. And while it's certainly a powerful enough job, when you compare it to the requirements for the Arithmetician, or even certain special characters' base jobs... it's beyond laughable.

will there eventually be an option with WoTL's translation? or will you be keeping the patch only with the PSX translation?

Someone else can make one using this as a base. I hated the WotL translation, so the chances of that happening are very very low

First I'd like to thank you all for this once again. It's an insane amount of work to do as much as you all do. Definitely doesn't fall upon blind eyes with me!

I read through all 17 pages of the initial discussion, the changelog, the base patch resource folder structure breakdown, and the download thread; so forgive me if I've still managed to miss the answer to the questions I'm about to ask...

1. I saw that Elric said he had no idea about the formulas used for 19 and 46, but is it possible for Choto to chime in on what the formulas are?

2. Meliadhoul's skillset - Is it still as in vanilla, or is it set as it was with the PSP version?

Maybe I should ask these next questions in the resource thread, but I'm already asking questions here so...

3. I see that the newly added Dark Knight skills say formula 00 while having sword required. But they're absent from the ARH. Are these hardcoded, or can I switch the formula used in the patcher and still have it work accordingly?

4. Considering the fact that sword required and Materia Blade required look to be changed in the base version, would using an ASM hack that changes the materia blade require to something else being required conflict with the changes you put in place?

5. Considering the built in changes to formulas that this copy has, would ASMs that alter formulas 11 and 13 conflict with anything that you didn't mention within the changes made?

Thanks in advance for the heads up on these things.

I'm pretty sure the new Dark Knight skills just point at the regular Weapon Damage formula, but don't quote me on that. AFAIK there shouldn't be a problem with changing their formula, as their weapon requirements ought to be dependent on their ability slots rather than their formula.

I'm sure that another hack to change any further weapon requirements would cause a conflicting error, as, given Ashley Riot's moveset, I expect the ARH hack from Jot5 is involved. It would be best to make any further adjustments in that, and I'm sure there's a spreadsheet for that. I just haven't tinkered myself.

Elric would definitely know more about these points than I would though :P

ARH controls all of ashley riots skills and ALSO sets the requirements for the sword skills from vanilla. They are unchecked in fftp because thats how ARH has always worked, it may be a mini version of ARH, but that is still the same.  So yes, changed will conflict, make your changes in ARH instead.

Meliadoul didnt change

Yeah, it looks like it is just using the 00 formula. I was a little bit skeptical because that was the case for Crushing Blow, which used the 2D formula in WOTL; so it seemed odd that it had 00 on TLW.

Ah gotcha. I wasn't sure since ARH seemed to affect all the sword skills except for the ruin skills and new dark knight skills, that still has  requires sword checked off in FTP. Made me question if ARH was independent of everything else, or if/how there was overlap.

I get the vibe that ARH is like an expansion of the requires materia blade to requires weapon ASM that now gives options for multiple weapons. If so, can I add to it to include more weapons besides the axe, mace, lance, dagger, & crossbow? Or has it already reached the limit of how many weapons you can make required?

So I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume more complicated ASM's like RAD 3 wouldn't work in conjunction to the TLW patch? A quick try produced broken results for me, from abilities not being moved around like I'm trying, to sprites changing to vastly different ones mid scene/battle. But maybe (likely lol) I'm missing something?

I mean... did you check that your RAD3 XML wasn't conflicting with other ASMs in the packed in resources?

First and foremost, you cannot simply just add stuff to TLW. If you want to do that, you're gonna need to download the resources pack and make a new image yourself with my instructions, and include any new ASMs you want to add.

I'm going to assume you did not do this, hence the issues you are having... RAD3 is a very broken ASM, and you are almost certainly correct in that it's not going to work with TLW. Considering how large the DK hack is, and how much space RAD3 takes up.

I would not recommend RAD3 tbh, but to each their own. Remnants of that mod were in the initial build of Jot5, and caused many issues even without conflicts.

It's also entirely possible that you simply did not setup RAD3 correctly, so it could be a combo of both. However without you checking the conflict checker in orgASM with your RAD3 xml, against the TLW ASMs, there is no way of knowing, and i don't have time to test that myself, which is why we released the resources.

I assumed since the ASM's were applied last that adding more could be done by just patching the ISO again, but I guess it makes sense that it doesn't work like that. I'll give it a go using the resources provided but I'm going to assume it still wont work lol. I'm not advanced enough yet to be able to look at multiple ASM's or the conflict checker and know what's wrong, so no idea there.

Maybe not the place to ask this, but since we're already here and talking about it, what alternatives do you recommend for achieving something similar to the RAD3 functionality? It works absolutely perfectly for the white mage upgrade I wanna make, but with TLW being out now I cant *not* start a project with it as a base lol (which, thank you again for all the hard work you put into it, btw).

Sorry if this already been answered elsewhere but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for in this post or any others.

Does this include fixing some of the bugs that exist in PSX version? Like item duplication glitch, JP scroll glitch, and whatever other ones there may be. I know there are ASMs to fix these issues, so if they're not included in this, I assume I can just apply my own patch as described in the The Lion War Base Patch Resources (https://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=12321.0) topic and just include those ASMs as well?

If it's not in that list, then no, it's not used. No we didn't make fixes to vanilla aside from the DEB victory condition.

I was working with events in ATTACK.OUT, TEST.EVT, Battle Conditions, etc.. and I noticed the event for Bethla Sluice (Hint) was just completely removed. Was there a reason for this or just something that was missed? I've been trying to add it back in myself but I don't have the knowledge. Seems to be something I'm missing in ATTACK.OUT or the conditions

I could be mistaken, but if i recall correctly, the hint was just rolled into the text in the opening event before the bsttle starts. This was to save on event space before we figured out how to remove the setup events

None of the WotL only items were added. There's no existing item space, nor has anyone whipped up a functionality for an extra, separate equipment table (which is how it works in WotL, IIRC). On a related note, the Agrias' Birthday event was slightly rewritten because it now rewards a perfume instead of a lip rouge. If you want to see Mustadio awkwardly blurt out what he thinks about how Agrias smells, go check that out when you get that far.

Negative. It's not in there. I even searched all files for "open the floodgate" which should have found the file with that text wherever it is but I got zero results. There should have been a line for "How do I open the floodgate?".

So just seems to be straight up missing. Could definitely roll the text into that event like you said though and just add:
//Message x02
{font:08}{Ramza}{font:00}{br}
How do I open the floodgate?{br}
{br}
Probably by pulling{br}
the levers on both sides!{br}
{br}
I think I see them...but first{br}
I have to get there...{end}

I don't know enough about the actual Event Instructions you'd have to add in the file though.

It probably got lost along the way.

One could just add it in to Ramza's existing dialog... but if you wanted to simulate him saying it after the start of the battle without setting up a new event, you could ChangeStats his CT to +64 (so he gets the first turn), let the conditions roll across the screen, let everyone start walking, then focus the camera on him, stop his animation, have him say his line, resume his animation, and end the event.

You can ignore this warning safely, but if it makes you more comfortable then you can use CDMage which can be downloaded on the site here: http://ffhacktics.com/w/images/6/68/CDmage.7z

So I basically just joined, been a fan of the original for a while and found out about the psp version a long while ago also but somehow even with the fix of the slowdown i still find myself cant keep playing the psp version even with all the cutscene and whatnot, cant figure out why. and then found about this when i decide to google about fft again.

before i went on a rant for too long, so ive look around, check the changelog and the main thread also the patch resource, so this is basically war of the lion but patched into the psx version correct?

I'm not exactly a perfectionist but i do want to know what is the extra content that in the psp version that is not manage to be added into this patch? Just wanna know if there is something on the psp version that i will feel missing out on, and forgive me if i missed it somewhere but does this make the party size into 24 from 16 like the psp version? And if its not can someone be kind enough to guide me if i can mod it myself, i have no single experience of modding apart from editing text/notepad which i dont think count as modding at all.

thanks in advance and apologize for the wall of text!

Currently under Heaven Knight, it has Balthier and Sky Pirate listed. Was just looking for some guidance. Or if you can direct me to somewhere i could get more help.

For best results, check out the Lion War Base Patch Resources thread and use the TLW-FFtext editor as per the instructions there to make your edits, then apply them with fftactext .457.  Some vanilla jobs like Rafa's have a duplicate - one as a guest, and one as a normal party member.  The sky pirate replaces one of those jobs, and all references to heaven knight are rerouted to the other job, so there will also be a job that reads "Heaven Knight" that you can rename.  If you're not sure which job with the same name refers to which character, the numbering in the FFtactext editor matches the numbering in Shishi, where you can see which sprite a job is associated with.

Is Ramza elegible for DK job?

if you have a bug to report, do it in the right thread... Ramza can become a Dark Knight perfectly fine.

Really enjoying TLW! About to finish my first run, getting ready for NG+. Thanks for everything!

The way stats work in FFT, a 10% buff does indeed scale with further levels.

Yes, you can keep getting the buff with further playthroughs.

Is there any chance in the future you guys could give an option for implementing the WoTL translation? Or does this patch compatible with FFT Complete?

Its not compatible with FFTC. This mod is way too large for it to be compatible with that.

But yes, you will get to play the most terrible translation of a game ever written in about a month or so, whenever I finish up TLWotL.

Am I to assume that you have to be in Act IV in order to get the Agrias Birthday scene to happen or can it be done earlier?

1. Does "TLWotL" stand for "The Lion War of the Lions"?
2. If so, that is hilarious. (this is not a question, I suppose...)
3. Is TLWotL just the translation, or are there any other differences to TLW?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Translation, Zodiac Calendar, Skill cost changes, everything in tactext updated, alazlams speech updated and aligned, etc.

Thank you very much for this. I know you're not a fan of the WotL translation, but I truly appreciate you took the time to make a patch for those who do enjoy it.

Is your new project TLWotL based on PSP version or PSX version?

PS: I think I can take the translation, what I find unbearable is actually the sound effect of PSP version, its a immersion breaker for me

RESOLVED. Of course I figure it out right after I post this haha. The ability was not set to "Learn with JP (Player)". When I turned that on and patched, it worked fine.

Here's my original post for posterity's sake. No response needed...

Hoping this is a good place for my question.

I previously played TLWotL a few times, and Master Teleport was available each time. I'm running it now and it doesn't show up. So I got a clean FFT, patched TLWotL and still nothing. Pulled patched ISO into FFTPatcher and it shows
01F3 Teleport 2 in Skill Sets tab but just doesn't appear in the game. Wondering if my save file just prevents it now, or if there's something else I'm overlooking to make this ability appear again.

Hi guys,

First post here so please pardon me if I didn't find the answer for what I will ask (even though I tried  :mrgreen: ).
I started playing this awesome mod on Duckstation as recommended but I couldn't find a tutorial on how to configure it for the best and most accurate display (like the original).
On the default settings the intro text is horrible to read for example.
I got some screen tearing even with Vsync active but I believe it is because my monitor is too old  :lol: since its native resolution is 1280 x 1024 (60hz).
I found the FFT In pixel perfect resolution by Lijj but it is for the ePSXe and the recommended resolution is not avaiable on the Duckstation (or I hadn't find it).
Can someone help me?

Thanks  :D

Never mind it guys. I tried the emulator and it was easier than I thought. After all it is more what your hardware can do and your own liking than someone's preference.

Thanks anyway.

Hi, I started a game on The Lion War 2.0 (I think it was 2.0 at least) and just created a new iso with the newest 2.03 patch. Problem is : I can't load my previous save file anymore. I even loaded a previous savestate to make a new regular save, hoping it would fix it, but no, I have the same error. Are patch versions really incompatible with each other? Would something nasty like an unavoidable crash or a softlock occur if I kept playing from my savestate and now only saved the game with savestates (I bet it would, but I still gotta ask)? I don't feel like restarting the game from the beginning, at least for now...

Alternatively I could go back to the older version but I read that it fixes a RDV mission being "uncompleteable", and I would like to complete them all being the completionist I am... Is it really un-winable in its previous state?

Thanks in advance!

The current version is not compatible with previous versions.

One of the RDV was not completeable in previous version, yes

Kudos to all the work you've done! Is there a reason the chapter title text used in TLWotL is different from WotL? I edited the image files shared with TLWotL resources to look more similar to the WotL text (attached). Is it just a preference?

There is a 1-2 pixel line that is offset on the ps1 version vs the psp version, due to the bottom functioning differently on the ntscu ps1 version vs the psp version.

Excellent work on the TLW mod, just had to comment here.

I do have to say that i start playing TLWotl first but after reading you can't steal Elmdors gear, i start playing the TLW mod instead. besides it was pretty annoying the increase of job points to learn certain jobs abilities and unlock other jobs, i guess in the PSP, this increase exists because the option to play on cooperative with other players.  But as in single player this increase is rather bothersome. I will however miss the buff for Rafa, Malak and Reis spells and the opportunity of Meliadol spells landing on monsters...

EDIT: i return playing TLWotl again after hearing the increase of JP was as is in the original Japanese version of the Zodiac Brave story for the PSX. I got the genji armor doing the randavous, so no reson to steal it from elmdor. Again, great job!

BTW, I think Mustadio should have a equivalent of the "crush punch" holy knight skill set as one of his snipe ability's, you know, one shoot that inflict death as a given chance. Named "sharp shoot" or "bulls eye" something like that. something to compete with the OP sky pirate.

In the PSP version it exists because it was based on the original Japanese build, which had those higher costs.

The FAQs states the requirements. You need to have mustadio unbenched as well. Plus the needed funds.

Another option is to give Mustadio the Barrage Attack
