Get Gamemaker if you want to make decent games with minimal code knowledge.

Learn programming if you want to make good games.

Gamemaker requires more scripting than you think if you want it to actually be powerful.

RPG Maker series is great; its where i first learned my first scripting language(RGSS) it is a very powerful tool, and the community created scripts make it really easy to make a game without learning shit.

I wouldnt buy it, cause rarely do you actually finish a "brand" new game, with new sprites and uniqueness and all. but it is really fun to mess with in spare time. and a finished product is always welcome if you come so dedicated.

I'm using it to make a game right now. In my opinion its going pretty well, despite being very short. Its got some great effects, and an average story to say the least.

... also its got an affection system, where 3 girls like you more depending on your choices.

RPG Maker is where I started my spritework!

Doesn't look like it has changed much since RM2K.  It has the potential to help make an awesome game, but alot of that depends on the creator not sucking.  Also, if it is anything like the previous versions of RPGMaker, you will need to learn some very, very basic programing.

Its actually much better than RM2K. Its far more detailed, and there are a lot of bugs from the other ones (like erase event) that are fixed

Fix'd

Well, for the most part. There are some extensive hacks that derive only basic attributes from the base.

I used that to make some random RPG projects, just for fun. The software is very noob friendly, and also has the option to add / change "scripts" which is a very advanced thing.. but if you learn to use it you can practically do any battle / ability / growth system you like.

I'd say, give it a try. The normal battle mode it uses sucks though. You don't see your char's on-screen, and it's not an ATB either.. but you can have any of them (or both) easily by googleing for scipts.

If you follow the link on this video, you can see the regular FF (4-->9) battle system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLVTz_rBLw . I'd play around with RPG Maker some time and when you feel you got the basics good, start off that demo (if that's the battle system you like).
