Title: Ashley Riot Complete! 2/16/10
Post by: stewelement on July 10, 2009, 11:11:43 pm
UPDATED 2/16/10

Hey everyone, here's the finished sprite. Barring any weirdness or errors, this should be the final and complete version. Enjoy!

Special Thanks to Smash for the amazing portrait
and
Cheetah and Kuraudo Sutoraifu for the original concept and letting me complete their idea
and
the rest of the FFH community, everyone here rocks.

Will be uploading to site submission board tonight.

Looking like a good start. The shorts are definitely nice, but the feet look rather small for some reason. Are you going to have the arms be completely original?
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 11, 2009, 01:43:39 pm
That's pretty damn good. I like the way the shirt & the gauntlets came out.
The only thing I'd change is a minor detail. The eyebrows are brown, but most sprites in the game use black. Like I said it's a very negligible detail.

Post by: stewelement on July 11, 2009, 01:52:08 pm
I agree on the feet. It's been difficult to get a sandal style in there. I will keep working on them but the face and hair are my next targets.

The arms are based off of the female monk's arms with some slight changes. I'd like to polish them a bit more to make the bucklers or elbow shields a bit more prominent.

I'd really like to get the rood necklace in there but there's not enough pixels.

Hmm, well in Ashley's memory he does have relatively normal bangs, would it be acceptable to add those on? Other then that looks pretty good!
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 11, 2009, 04:12:47 pm
Don't for get about the Geomancer's sandles, they are a great base if you make them black.

Yeah the bucklers on the gauntlets could be a bit more prominent as well. You might want to just start with the female monks and then work from there.

Hard to tell from the size of it. Do you have a double-sized one? And perhaps one from a diagonal?
Title:

I'll back you up.

Cleaned it up a bit, made a pallete fix, added more contrast, and -2 colours. I still don't get why use 5 blacks that look just exactly the same. The less colours, the better.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 12, 2009, 12:50:19 pm
Hmm, you made his antenna hair look pretty plausible Smash, great job! (I don't know... without it he just doesn't seem like he'd be Ashley Riot)
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 12, 2009, 01:42:26 pm
The color corrections look good, buffing up the arms good, the shorts look a little plain (but that is expect from a front angle I suppose), improvements to the gantlets are good. The sprite hair is a very good attempt, is there any way to lower or spread out the hair a bit, it just looks a bit too vertical at this point.

Oh and the portrait is pretty freaking amazing. I feel like there is something a bit off but I can't put my finger on it.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on July 12, 2009, 10:17:52 pm
Cleaned up quite a bit after Smash's post. Still working well within 16 colors and eliminated all the similar blacks. I adjusted the sandals, arms, bucklers (I didn't like making them so wide) face and hair, sans antennae. I'm not really sure I'm sold on it yet, though I may play with it in the 3/4ths poses and see what I can do there.

I plan on adding some red into the back of the bucklers in the back poses, but other than that, I think the color scheme works well.

Smash, your portrait is great. The only thing I dislike is that the hair looks a little on the limp side. Would you mind terribly if I touched it up a bit and used it for this sprite?
Title:
Post by: Smash on July 12, 2009, 10:47:42 pm
Not at all.

The only thing I disagree with on the sprite is the saturated orange on the hair and the pants. It looks bad, and too bright.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on July 12, 2009, 11:10:39 pm
You're right, and I already have a brown that fits nicely where the orange went. I'm a sucker for bright colors.

Color count now is 11. Any ideas to actually ADD colors to this sprite?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 13, 2009, 12:13:27 am
In the game he does have a nice navy blue as part of his shorts. Also the red for the cross on his guantlets.

I'm with Smash in that orange in the hair is a bit much.
Title:
Post by: Asmo X on July 13, 2009, 03:46:22 am
The recent attempt looks better. Don't add colours unless it's necessary. Also, what are the things you added to the pants? they are kind of incoherent. Are they supposed to be buckles or something? Finally, I think you might need softer shading on the boots. That's just a bit too much black

Worked on the 3/4th view and TRIED... yes, I tried...to get the JRPG hair to work. I'm still not sold on it yet. Anyway take a look and let me know. It may come down to a vote on the haircut.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 15, 2009, 12:30:48 pm
Hmm, in my opinion it looks quite good, my only critique is something looks a little wrong with his eye, but... in the atua sprite preview above them, it looks fine. Also the hair does seem an improvement, great use of lighter colors as well.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on July 15, 2009, 05:21:33 pm
Ok, attempt number 2 at the haircut.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 15, 2009, 10:17:41 pm
Wow that hair is impressive on the second version. Very nice, plus the bit of red for the gauntlets. The shape of his body is looking a bit odd, his chest looks kind of saggy. But definitely very much in the right direction.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on July 27, 2009, 11:32:26 am
So I gave the JRPG hair a shot, and it doesn't look so bad. Granted, it took forever, much longer that doing Crono's haircut. Thoughts? Comments?
Title:
Post by: Kuraudo Sutoraifu on July 27, 2009, 11:56:09 am
The hair looks awesome on the diagonals.  The North, South, and West look kinda wonky, but you'll hardly ever see it anyway.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 27, 2009, 01:00:47 pm
You totally have the hair down. I would consider getting rid of the little forward flip on the front and side view though. Overall it is looking amazing and the design is great. There are just a few consistency issue though as far as his proportions and posture are concerned. He looks a little extra fat on the side and rear/side view. Also his head looks like it is in the wrong place for the rear/side. So very very nice.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on August 05, 2009, 01:31:09 pm
I touched up the hair and removed an extra row of pixels. I made the hair more lightning-y and it's started to really grow on me. I am concerned now that the hair is too tall on the front 3/4 view, can anyone confirm this for me? ( I don't have shishi on work pc )

I've started filling out the rest of the sheet slowly but surely. Barring any major setbacks I'd put the sprite at 33% complete, with most of the body animations complete.

Also, you may notice that there's no red crosses on his arms in the preview. I am working on the arm animations now and I'm not sold on them just yet, and I think he still looks good without. We'll see.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on August 05, 2009, 04:56:35 pm
Looking at the last preview, I realize that I have done exactly what I didn't want to do in the beginning...go overboard on the haircut. I'm keeping some of the lightning bolt styling but I'm also reverting back to the 2nd style back antennae on the front 3/4 view.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on August 05, 2009, 04:56:43 pm
this is looking good, can you do the whole sprite with this quality? if so i might have to make room for him in my patch :D
Title:
Post by: Kuraudo Sutoraifu on August 05, 2009, 05:49:47 pm
Yeah, I agree Stewelement, the new ones are a bit overboard.  I like the old ones quite a bit more, but you might want to keep the new ones for the critical HP frame.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on August 05, 2009, 06:01:41 pm
The front pose is being difficult but I managed to curb the ridiculousness of the haircut while keeping the sharp angles. I think they will work better in-game than the squiggle looking hair.

@ Zozma : I certainly plan to keep quality levels high and suck factors to a minimum.

--Looks like I messed up the scaling a bit on the preview--
Title:
Post by: stewelement on August 05, 2009, 06:25:47 pm
Looking again, I'm going to take your advice Kuraudo and use the newest lightning bolt hairstyles for the critical health/ getting hit poses. Sometimes its just difficult to leave artwork alone and not keep on tweaking it. I'll just have to force myself to quit working on the hair.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 05, 2009, 07:29:31 pm
This is just looking so freaking awesome. The hair is looking really good in this newest preview, though you overcompensated on the front view now and it needs a few more pixels.

Everything else is really coming together. The crosses on the arm guards definitely aren't mandatory and could come after you have finished the arms anyways. If you are going to go to the trouble of custom spriting the arms a version with and without the cross would probably be helpful to others in the future.
Title:
Post by: mav on August 05, 2009, 07:35:02 pm
I agree that the front view looks like it got clipped a bit too much. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing the "antenna" a bit longer on the back view and the side view either...but, that's just personal preference. This sprite is really shaping up to be a keeper.

Also, there could be more contrast, but it's not 100% necessary.
Title:
Post by: stewelement on August 05, 2009, 07:45:48 pm
@ Cheetah and mav :

Please clarify, which poses need more pixels and where do they need them?
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 06, 2009, 08:51:56 am
Have you tried moving the 'antenna hairs' 1 pixel away from each other, and then placing them 1 pixel upward?
(I'm talking about the front sprite) (270 degrees view)

8888th post in this sub-forum!
Lucky I guess..~

Hmm...for the forward-facing sprite, move the edge pixel of each antenna down one, then over one. Then fill in the empty space with the light brown.

And for the rear-facing sprite, move the entire antenna over one pixel, so it should extend away from the ears. Fill in as necessary.

I attached what I'm talking about to make things a little clearer.

His antenna hair reminds me too much of Mewt to enjoy, other than that, he looks great.

Mav's additions are about what I was thinking. The antenna where just looking way to stunted in the front view before.

Ok..it's time for a MEGA update....it's been a long time coming. Right now there are some big errors with the arm animations ( I'm using Monk arms as a placeholder) and not all frames are complete but I think I've really come a long way with this sprite. I'd put it at about 70% done.
As an added bonus, I did not give him butt pants. Check it out and let me know what you all think. I'll check on the thread periodically until this weekend, then I'll be gone for 2 weeks to my annual Army Reserve training. I'd hoped to complete the sprite by then, but it's not gonna happen. It's better not to rush things anyway.

P.S. If anyone knows where Smash went, can you tell him to take a look at this sprite for me? Thanks
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on September 10, 2009, 04:14:54 am
Wow this is so awesome. Though I have to say that his eyes are looking abnormally dark for some reason. I'm going to have to plug this into ShiShi and really take a closer look at it. The forward facing hair is still missing a little something, maybe one pixel wider on either side. Definitely take your time with this, it is such an amazing sprite.
Title:
Post by: Asmo X on September 10, 2009, 04:37:21 am
The...things of hair need to be angled away from each other more and hang down rather than zigzag up into the air. This is good otherwise.

edit: crit was for the front view

Also, you may want to update the sprite's format so that it will fit in the latest Shishi's sprite format.

WIP Portrait that I started about a year ago :
Title:
Post by: mav on September 10, 2009, 03:04:51 pm
That's a very nice portrait. I dunno how the hair dipping back into frame would look in game, but otherwise it's quite nice. Though I think he could use a different face shape and eyes...Right now he looks too much like his base. And the shoulders may be too high, based on how you positioned 'em.

Two good portraits for this character...most sprites don't even have one good portrait.

I disappeared for a bit but I've been working on Mr. Riot whenever i get a chance. Anyway, here's a 90% version that I am really happy with. Currently I'm playing with the red crosses on his bucklers and adjusting his combat animations arms/faces, as they're a bit wonky right now.

Very nice, just work on the forward-facing frame. Great work, by the way.

This is going to be such a great sprite. Did you see the portrait that the Japanese spriters did for him?

Yeah, I saw too, but.. Hey, what about the one I did? I..

*Checks mine*

..Ugh.

Time to update.

Die, japanese.
I shall wage war against each and every one of you from now on. Who's with me?

Actually, a competition of sorts against the japanese spriters might be a good idea.. Loads of epicness could come out of it as a result.

C&C btw.

Yes, I definitely liking the new one. Looks more Ashley than the old one. Great job ^^
Title:
Post by: mav on December 21, 2009, 10:23:07 am
Holy fuck, that portrait is great. The other one wasn't bad, but I definitely like the newer one--great work as always, Smash. The only thing I would change is that little strand of hair that that's curving close to his right eye--it kinda melts with the eyebrow and looks like a super hair strand...

And I totally wouldn't mind a little competition with the Japanese guys. At the very least it would let all of us polish our skills. But that require them to be a little more responsive, which they may not want to be...

@ Smash
Nice portrait update, it's good that you're back.

I thought that after the sprite was done and I polished up my own portrait, I'd provide a spritesheet with each portrait in place (mine, smash's, and the japanese one ) so all efforts would be showcased.
Title:
Post by: mav on December 21, 2009, 11:57:18 am
You probably know this already, but I just thought that I'd mention that your portrait and the Japanese ones both used the same base, so you might wanna change out the chin to give him a more unique look.

Good luck with everything. I can't wait to see this sprite completed.

Hey all,
I'm requesting some help on this sprite. I need some extra sets of eyes to look over the animation frames, particularly the back attacking/blocking frames. I am having some trouble fitting the pieces together and I've mostly patched up the front animations but, I need some other people to take a look/touch up/help me out. I really want this sprite completed soon and the animations are kicking my butt. The updated sheet is below, fire up ShiShi and take a look. It's ok to make changes. Post up/pm any hints/advice/suggestions/fixes/changes. Thanks everyone,

stewlement

In all honesty, I have no idea at all who the hell Riot is, but that doesn't matter. Your sprite is very good. I especially like the hair, looks like wavy compact lightning-bolts of goodness ;) However, the second to last attack pose may be wrong, or I may be wrong >_>

It's ok, I just hit a snag but I eventually figured out the issue ( 3 frames were in the wrong places ) and fixed it. Ashley looks great in-game, I'm really pleased. He's not perfect but this sprite is the very best that I could do. Almost every frame in the sheet is a custom job and I really feel that it's an accurate portrayal of Ashley Riot within the FFT universe. If I can get my emulator working (I put him in-game on psp) I will post up some screenshots in the near future.
