This is my first ever attempt at making a sprite for anything.
Is this worth polishing up and finishing or should I try from scratch?

Re-Re-updated...

And In PNG just for Zodiac

The trick here is to keep on moving forward on the basic views, get criticism and input, and don't be afraid to rework an angle that you already considered "done". There is always room for improvement.

The picture is updated. Has the green belt and the brown boots.
I'm not sure I like the belt though.

its off to a fine start, keep in mind that dark edges should only be used for shadow effects or separation between colors. take away some of the dark edges around the  head

To be quite frank, it doesn't look awesome. It will need a lot of correction but I don't think you should start over. Hey but don't worry, you'll get the hang of it soon enough. It took me like 7 versions to make my avatar, plus a little touch up from Zozma.

The hair's shading needs a lot of work, and don't use colors to distant unless you want to show reflection (white).

Better get this right right now unless you want all your sprite sheet to look mid-quality.  :o
Just like I did with my Male Blue mage >_>'
Actually, it really did look terrible... There wasn't a custom sprites section back then for feedback. :O
Well maybe I failed with that one, but I gained experience from it and that's what's important. Making mistakes and correcting them is the best way to get better.

Only use black and very dark for shadows, but for lighter colors just use a darker tone of the color.

Oh and please post in png next time, I'm having a hard time seeing some pixels.

Anything is possible as long as it is within the hardware's limits. (ie. disc space, RAM, Video RAM, processor, etc.)
<R999> My target market is not FFT mod players
<Raijinili> remember that? it was awful

Yeah the lack of shading makes this look very flat. The dark outline has seriously got to go.

@ Zodiac, be as frank as you want. Any criticism helps. I redid the sprite.

BTW I didn't realize it was. Sorry!

Spritesheet is now up.
Hopefully it looks better!

Now is probably the hardest part, removing that thing around his head (I seriously can't find any translation in English from French), working hair there instead and adding a little tail. ;o

After that your Sabin should look way less monkish, even though he is monkish to start with. >_>'
Well you get my point.

And thanks for PNG, you made my day!

My ShiShi isn't working right.
The monk is type 1 right?
No matter what type I set ShiShi doesn't display the body in most of the previews. Is this what it always did?

is your background set to transparent in you .BMP? if not you might have the selections overlapping

Yeah, I set the background to green so I could see the edges better. Though it would be like RPG Maker 2003 where the first color is always transperant.

Now he has a shirt and a ponytail! Woot! In-game though his head looks funky. Should I remove some of that black leftover from the headband?

Any tips for making a portrait? I was going to use Ramza's ponytail for it. I just need advice for removing the portrait's headband.

Well my goal was to make someone you would drink protein shakes with and be scared of... but...

I got someone you drink appletinis with and ... go see imagitainment shows with....

Suggestions to man-ify him? I think I should make the purple darker for sure!

I have 3 words to say:

I am LOL, like really LOL.

For the sprite I said restarting was not necessary, but for that portrait, it is.

I'm working on it guys.
Is the spritesheet okay though?

Okay, look you mispositioned 80% of the hair tails. Sabin facing back, and in critical are good, but the rest are all off by 2-3 pixels. the tail doesn't start on the upper part of the head, but lower.

Also, try making it shorter when the tail is in the back compared to the rest of the body; that is, when Sabin is facing you. It doesn't look right... the distance is different but the size is the same.

And if you check the singing ones, it's just way too long.

Nice job for removing the headband though.

You seem to lack some 3D perception, I don't know if it's normal or not, but I know that everyone but me sucked in our drawing class (not THAT kind of drawing class, I'm a machinist, it means drawing 2D and 3D plans for pieces).

As what I've seen some palletes aren't still changed like those browns on the pants and the navy blues on the head and clothes just change it more closer to other palletes.

and also I've compaired it to a Ramza sprite the hair tails it's exactly the same place where Ramza's hair tail is placed on the head.
