Zalbie's face angle looks odd there, jimmy.

If the mouth is any smaller, it will just be a grey dot, it just doesn't look right. Having the wider mouth is better imo.

We could always stick with closed mouths--it's hard to tell whether the Zalbag I posted is shouting, commanding, or shocked. Hell, I made the portrait and I don't even know...

IMO I think we don't need a commanding Zalbie portrait. His face looks already commanding to me (vanilla).

Yup. Open mouths and FFT styled portraits don't get along too well.

Good try though jimmy!

I wish LD could show us how these custom portraits work in-game..
It'll help us. :)

Hmm.. patience..

I figure LD meant a portrait showing Zalbag as he was literally giving a command (hence the open mouth), but yes, I too think Zalbag had a very commanding presence. Just ask Teta.

Haha. Yeah, I think so too. All the open-mouth attempts aren't working. Hmm...Just what seems to be the problem? Hmm....
Anyway, another try because I really hope to see an open-mouth portrait in action ^^

The problem is the ANATOMY. :)
It looks odd for a face to like like that in FFT.

If we try open mouth, then the chin should go down, too.
The jaw should move, too.

Ah yes, the jaw. No wonder kept looking weird. But still, with the mouth problem, I think with jaw moved, it'll still look weird. Well, have to try to know ^^

Shaping the mouth itself is tedious--can't be too circular or shaped strangely either...It's not as simple as smiles...

-_- i donno guys, i think its not FFT style to even have emotional portraits like this.

only something drastic like fatally injured characters

Ramza: But im a monk!!

Hmm....yea. Even fatally injured, the mouth only open a little bit, which isn't as tough as this. I guess we should stick to original Zalbag?

I don't know about that Zozma... as I said War of the Lions makes the emotions look natural in it's cutscenes. If that is used as a base, it could work.

Hmm...though so far, we seen small open-mouth in the scenes not big open-mouth which what we all are trying to do here. Perhaps we try small mouth, like the scene, what Sir LD said, use them as a base?

Open mouths are not 100% neccessary take a look at Mike's early work, alot of them are change of expression in the eyes, some can just be change of positioning of the portrait, with an expression.

Ok, here's my wild try. To the left is mine, and to the right the one jimmy did that I liked the most. I did it just for the hell of it =P
