Title: Reliquian (Antiquirian) (Update on First Post)
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 18, 2009, 09:36:51 pm
I tested the 5th Male Reliquian palette:
(I did this also for fun)

Oh look at the new Gafgarion! hehe. LOL.
My.. my.. I'll have to test my luck on those gamblers..

The sprite works flawlessly so far. :)
Good job.

The palette looks horrible; A greenish shading for grayish clothes? what.

Yeah I just assumed that was a work in progress. it looks horrible right now

Many thanks Mike, but it looks like there's been some major discoloration, on the sprite at least. It should look more like how it does in this PNG spritesheet (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/files/minwu_pal5_272.png). And the interior of the cape looks like it lost the second shade...I'll work on getting LD the BMPs of this, so consider this a work in progress.

Though testing the sprite in game must have been fun...

Well, that can easily be fixed. :)
Title:
Post by: Asmo X on August 19, 2009, 11:19:03 pm
what is that thing on the reliquian's chest?
Title:
Post by: mav on August 19, 2009, 11:48:12 pm
I believe it's Minwu's strange breast and ab plates, assuming the sprite was designed with this image (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/finalfantasy/images/4/44/Amano_Minwu.jpg) in mind.

I see. I think people need to be more considerate of what parts of a design are and are not going to translate well in sprite form. Right now it looks unintelligible. Think simple designs everyone.
Title:
Post by: MiKeMiTchi on August 20, 2009, 02:24:43 am
^ Agreed.
In that case, it will be easier to make them.

Although I did like the chest part of the sprite.
It makes the sprite more noticeable. :)

..and I think, without it, they'll look weaker.

Try changing the breastplate into a belt (a thick belt)
Right now it is way too high and is only a few pixels away from touching the sprite's face.
If you're worried about looking weaker know it is better than looking like you shouldn't be able to move your arms efficiently

In an unrelated note, I decided to download Shishi and all that jazz to test out one of the palettes and portraits. Hmm...does the breastplate look a little less irregular on this palette?

Open the spoilers to see the images...

I think the portrait looks perfect (it looks like how it does in Paint, etc) and the palette looks correct (as in no color loss; I'm thinking about darkening the palette), though it seems that the sprite itself looks kinda awkward at times. I'd like to hear what you guys think...

the eyes look low while just standing there and charging... you can't even see the Reliquian's left eye when it's charging.
Taking damage looks perfect though wouldn't change a thing

I agree, It seems like the eyes are kind of low in general/the shawl/mask over the mouth is too high.

portrait is perfect but sprite needs work

I was wrong about the in-game, the face needs help ASAP
Title:
Post by: mav on August 20, 2009, 07:19:39 pm
I agree wholeheartedly: I've never been partial to the mask and the eyes tend to get lost quickly, which isn't good...I guess I could work on it...though I'm not much of a spriter.

So should I hold off on finishing the palettes until the sprite is cleaned up, or will it be possible to easily implement those palettes after the sprite has been modified?

I think the mask looks fine... the eyes suck. When you can actually see the eyes it looks like he has down's syndrome... overall it's nice work though, i'm a fan

The portrait looks pretty solid to me. I seem to remember someone had a version of the portrait with some different shading that i preferred but the current one is still pretty good. With the sprite, what you really need is for your dark areas to be even darker. Compare the reliquian sprite to the ones around it. It almost looks like it's glowing. The shading needs to go a bit deeper.

Alrighty--I'll keep working on the brown palette; I can darken the shadows a bit, thanks for the tip Asmo. And if no one else wants to work on the sprite itself then I'll take a stab at that later. Right now I have the black palette done (took the colors straight from one of the Ninja's palettes, I believe) and the very white one (which I took from one of the Priest's palettes), so hopefully those two will look proper.

EDIT: More of the sprite in action. Now you can see the brown palette modified and one of the other palettes too.

Note how his palette is a bit darker than it was previously.

Hmm...
Note the three of 'em, especially the dead one. What do you guys think about this portrait?
Looks like I accidentally painted something white that should have been brown. Better fix that...
Nothing special, I just like the way the white ones look...

If you'd ask me,
they're fine. :)

(except for the "He Attacks" pic)

Here is a quick edit of what looks more natural for his face... The original is on the right

The image isn't loading for me dwib...

And yeah, I changed up the brown one; I'll take more screenshots as necessary. I've also been looking through the sprite and notice that a lot of the arms (especially when the arm is raised up) use a black interior shade, as opposed to the shade of the interior portion of the cape. I'm not sure whether Miroshi did this on purpose...and I really haven't worked on sprites at this magnitude, so I'm probably gonna just finish the other five palettes and then either upload the bmp and spr for someone else to modify or just suck it up and work on it myself...

Awesome to see it in game. The only thing I notice and I'm sure it's not news to you but the eyes on the brown palette look pretty funny, like a pair of silly glasses he has on or something, if that makes sense. The white palette though they actually look quite good so I dunno how that happens but I just figured I'd point it out. Keep up the good work mav!

Should eye lighten the eye color and/or darken the white on it? Right now the eyes are an extremely similar shade to the brown garb, so maybe I could make them something more noticeable...
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on August 21, 2009, 12:01:41 pm
Hmm, it might just be that I am seeing it in a weird way but all I see is like a white circle that looks to be outlined in black or something so it stands out as looking like reflective glasses. I think that just looking at the other sprites from the game they have large black portions in their eyes with only a little white, but I guess they also have the whole face to work with while the mask limits the amount of space you have to make a larger eye. But I don't know any great solution, I have never sprited before, but perhaps changing the shade or adding more black or even a larger eye would look nice, if those suggestions are do-able!

EDIT: Also I like that you misspelled 'I' as 'eye', or if it was intentional, then I like that too.

Ah! I see it now, dwib, I'll try to fix that error when I get back home later today.

Oh and that typo of mine is embarrassingly great.

Final Fantasy Gaiden and these new portraits might make you rethink the design of this job a bit.

Ah yes, for a portrait... maybe on the female one because I think the male one is perfect as is.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 29, 2009, 06:31:49 pm
And on that note, I've started a female Reliquain portrait, using parts of the female Time Mage and Thief, as well as the turban made by the Japanese site.

I'm not sure how far along MiKe was with his portrait though...

I like that! I love the hair and her look, great work Mav!

Whoops--I forgot to give her a mask. And the jewel needs work too. This is 17 colors...I'll take care of all this by my next edit.

I think there is something wrong with the jewel on her head...but maybe its just me.

That looks great.

Ahh.. I never had the chance to finish the portrait. :P
I think the new one by mav is better than mine. Just fix the jewel, or make is smaller.

How 'bout the sprite look?

No, I definitely don't like the jewel either. I just made it gigantic to cover up a strand of hair on the original turban. I'll clean it up when I get home tonight.

Can you link me to the completed sprite, MiKe?

The turban looks very oblong to me. Maybe it's too ovalish and it doesn't give definition to her scalp as much as I would appreciate. Also, does her brow above the left eye seem to be covering one pixel too much, or is it just me?

Anyway, really nice portrait. Can't wait to see her with a mouth veil.
