Yeah I never like the design of the older Female Mage, I have been aware of it for a long while and have been eyeing the hat. I thought about using it before but I'm liking the one I'm currently using more, but I might try experimenting.

I'm thinking of making some changes to the base body, which is an archer, to differentiate it more. Probably leg/knee high black leather boots, extending the skirt a bit, and maybe changing the look of the black patch on her chest.

The hat looks good enough why would you make it small?

I just think it looks a little to big somehow in the front side view. It appears as though it might be a problem in those walking animations. Just planning ahead.

Cheetah, you might consider submitting the blue mage to the site.

Are you still working on that red mage?

Yeah, Cheetah, that red mage is awesome, and I've been waiting to see your final version of the female blue mage.

Yeah I am really bad about actually submitting my finished work. The blue mage will be finished soon, like hopefully submitted this week now that I'm back. I am planning a second version of the blue mage with a blindfold mask, just need to figure out the portrait but it should look sweet.

alright, so i was looking over some of those japanese portraits, and i fell in love with one of them. since they had all the portraits on the same palette (over 150 colors) AND scrambled about, i had to reconstruct one of them onto a 8bit format.

i've decided on my next project. i'll do this one differently from everything else: i'll create a portrait, then base the sprite on that. for this project, i'll be using the priest as a base, adding a new head, and placing the hood down on the back (instead of over the head like EVERY other hooded sprite...)

her name's Gabriel, and she'll be a spoiled noble raised in the dark arts. her job will either be called Dark Mage, Dark Priest, or Necromancer (i have some seriously devilish moves ready for this one  ... think necrolyte / crypt lord from GS2)

the dark mage will be like modded wizard, but will excell in fire, darkness, and status magic (think rune master from SD3), while the necromancer / dark priest will use darkness, staus, and undead based magic (think of a dragoner for undeads - i have improved undeads and added new ones, Chaos Dragon, in my patch)

any suggestions on the color scheme are VERY welcome...

its nice

but the lightest red (assuming its a skin tone) is too much brighter than the rest of it. id say soften the deeper reds a bit as they certainly are too strong for a fft portrait. dont soften toooo much but it should hopefully bring it together more with the lightest shade

It is a good base portrait. Oh and Zozma is absolutely right about the reds in the hair, I thought the same thing.

BREAK TIME!!!!!

actually, the lightest hair tone isn't a skin tone. oh, and i'll try to de-saturate the colors a bit more so they seem more 'antique'

oh, and i'll do the same for the cloak. to be honest, they don't seem so dark when they are the correct (in-game) size. maybe this means my avatar's too dark too since he has black...

thats true, things tend to look darker outside of the game.

but they still look a little hard, those shades

The coloring looks fine on it's own really, it just doesn't match the palette of the game very well. A little to harsh and bright (like and anime), instead of the earthy tones FFT uses.

So I'm just showing off a small design change here to see what people think. Instead of having the black chest patch on the body I'm going for like an armored chest look. What do people think?

I am actually making a good amount of progress on this sprite, I'm just finalizing the design as I'm getting into the more detailed stuff. I also got really worried about color limiting this, but I figured out a good solution I believe.

Looks pretty good, I like the breastplate. Very good sprite, can't wait for her to be finished!

this is really great man...i may just create a red mage job (to replace that crumby geomancer) seeing this thing...

or maybe give the red mage to the females only (a replacement for the dancer) and do another job (like blue mage) for the male bard replacement

I believe that same idea was going to be implemented into the defunked VK Patch. But with my male Red Mage and my female Blue Mage. Though I do have a male Blue Mage sprite that I am working on as well.

Okay so Miroshi had the bright idea was suggesting I change the hair, and I had been thinking about doing it anyways. So do people think this is an improvement and making the sprite more original?

this does....in a way. the hair looks like a roll of chalah! kinda like agrias, but tighter 'braids'

The braided hair is unique and looks really good, but I find that the breastplate detracts from the asymmetry that the first version had going for it. It still looks great though, and I guess maybe the armor is necessary to properly convey the warrior-mage nature of the class.

Glad you like the hair. The black patch did add a nice asymmetry, but I think the different types of arm takes over that responsibility and having it in too many places just makes things clutter. Plus more armor is better, I want this chick to be a major badass.
