I should make a gallery here..

Recent:

Update: 8 more, like a bazillion more left.

Or at least know the basics for spriting this style, like for example, color limits, size limits, where to acomodate the body parts in the sheets, and more stuff like that.

For now im dawdling around with paint, making stuff from scratch:

Sain from FE (Horseless)

I need to know if it meets the requirements before continuing on it.

Well, the size limit isn't a problem unless its going over a certain character.  Color limit is 16 colors if I remember correctly, 16 in each palette. 16 for portrait, 16 for the sprite.

If you changed one of the Chocobos it would be possible.

Including Sain in a patch would have lots of swooning women.

Very nice work :O

I'd take a normal sheet and paste your work over the existing character. Layers are great for that. the sprite editor should help with lining it up correctly.

Hmm.. Sprite editor?
I currently know nothing about hacking and the like, im just doing all in paint for now.
Yet, which sheet should you recommend to edit Sain in?

Im almost finished on the mug.

Here is a good link to quality rips of all the sprites for the game:

http://istaken.org/fft/

This will give you a basic idea of how the sprites are organized in FFT. Like it was said before the limit is 16 colors, not that for sprites one of those 16 colors needs to be the black background color that becomes transparent in game.

Your work is looking very promising, it will be nice to have another true spriter around. You are coming real close to capture the style for the portraits and your starter sprite looks awesome. I would maybe just move his hip/thigh pads one more pixel forward so they are more clearly placed there. Right now it kind of looks like he is holding something in his hand. Though this problem would likely disappear once the sprite was in motion.

For now just looking through the sprites from the link I gave you will explain a lot. Eventually you will want to get an ISO of the psx or psp game and use some of the tools that you can get from the "Download" page on the main site. FFTPatcher in particular has a tool called ShiShiSprite editor that can rip the sprites, show the various palettes, and even show what parts of the sprite sheet are used for combining into a final piece of animation among other things. Very handy to say the least. If you have any question post them here, or you can check out our IRC channel for quick answers to questions.

That sure helped.
So basically, the game takes areas in the canvas to use as pieces for sprites, instead of having the sprites already assembled? It seems easy enough to edit them then.

Btw, a bit more Sain, with complete mug:

(im using this as avi now, due to pwn.)

It's ok if I use the archer sheet as base?

its strongly advised to use a base of some sort,

but it looks to me like you dont need too much help ;).

shishi sprite editor has a preview that will let you see how each arm connects

if you're doing a psx version edit then you can use Zodiac's iso expand patch, and THEN the sprite reassignment patch, then you will have plenty of space to fit sprites in of any size.

Yeah, that's unbelievably impresssive.

And the archer might work. I have a feeling monk might, too.

Most cavaliers would be just new mugs and a recolor.(with slight hair and armor changes)

For now im trying to figure out which body parts do certain stuff on the archer sheet.. It looks like they jumbled all that in no specific order.

Use the shishi program and it will outline which parts do what when you use the box in the bottom right corner of the program.

just use the preview, if you click on the previewed image it shows you what part of the sheet the arms are on

Well your work is very impressive. Just keep messing with that stuff and the rest will come in time.

There is something just barely off with your portraits that is really bothering me. I think it is that you have the eye a little too big, or you are adding extra pixels are changing the angle or something. Obviously it still looks great and it is just an artistic choice. I'm just a purest for the FFT style.

cheetah is right

the white of the eye should be only 1 pixel wide.

Thanks guys.

About the eyes, I noticed and thought about it when making it. The eyes had to be a little wider than normal, for it's one of the main aspects of the Fire Emblem style. They were supossed to be bigger, but it would have taken the FFTish style.
I'l try and work around a fixing later tho.

I downloaded FFPatcher today and a FFT rom, or the like. It had a ccd. file, img. and sub. file; shishi opened the img file and im working with those sprites for ref. :)
