First off I Japanese in the title in the hopes that some infamous Japanese portrait artist might actually take notice since he has been doing Final Fantasy Gaiden portraits lately. Plus I needed a spot for my FFG Thief also known as Master Thief Zero.
So this is what I have so far, all key animations and walking. A few different mask angles and some fixes to the wacky Balthier sprite and this will be ready for a version 1 release. I'm am still trying to see if we can fit a red sash on him. By my count he only has about 12 or 13 colors right now, so there are definitely colors there for it. If we can figure out a sash then it will likely just be a second version. Oh and I need help with a portrait. So if anyone is willing that would be great. Between Balthier and three available thief portraits it should be pretty doable, though the eyes may be tricky.
Oh and if anyone wanted to do some quick gif previews of the walking animations that would be appreciated, I am having an impossible time with it without Adobe software.
Thanks to Seushiro and Jimmy for contributing to this sprite.

Hmm....I'll try the sash again, Sir Cheetah.
Thanks Twinees, that is great. Freak I didn't know that our forum can't display Japanese characters. Unless I'm doing something wrong?
Thanks Jimmy I really appreciate your input.
1 little thing, on his belt, where the pouch is, i believe the shading changes on the last frame of the walking cycle... was that supposed to be like that?
Probably just to the rushed color limiting I did. Good catch though and I will double check it for sure.
No problem, Sir Cheetah. Glad to help ^^
Hmm...But Mike had his signature in Japanese characters before. Hmm...
About that shading changing, that's originally from Balthier. I think its suppose to be the shadow for the arm.
if that was the case? shouldn't that be at the 4th or 3rd frame? not 5th? unless it is the 4th frame...
I think we should just remove that. It looks weird.
agreed.
Aside from that, there's also a white pixel that appears on one of the frames near the bandanna--I suppose it's there on purpose, but I think you should just color that pixel gray.
Mav: Yeah it was supposed to be there, but you are probably right about removing it.
I think the last frame of the walking where the pouch changes color is due to his arms shadow over the bag. . . but then again if ur arms are way back when the arms are swinging then I guess the shadow should not be there
your sash was actually fine Jimmy. and i think having a knot might mess it up. . .
Yeah, adding the knot would be tricky.
Here is what Jimmy did on the sash so far. I think the basic shape is good so far. First we need to get ride of his shirt tails hanging below the sash, and then we can figure out what to do about a knot or something.
I think he looks too much like Balthier, maybe removing the collar will help?
Yeah, removing that portion of the shirt will help to position the knot better. I'll see what I can do.
u know I think Kages suggestion is good. . . would be nice to have a loose open long sleeve shirt for a change. . . dunno thou if the reference pic has his collar with a shirt. . .
Also changing colors of shirt might help, cause currently it's just Balthier with Zorro mask to me :/
Well originally I was okay with Balthier with a Zorro mask because I didn't want it to be a big undertaking, and I think as a starting point I will finish that. However after that I think I will keep making adjustments to make it more and more in line with the FFG Thief design. I am almost done removing the shirt tails off of the front walking frames, and then I could use some working on a sash and knot.
I've been looking at the art for FF Gaiden; it seems unusually simple...this should make the portrait-making process a bit easier.
Anyway, the sash looks really nice. This is shaping up to be a very interesting sprite. Great work, everybody.
To those planning to use FF:Gaiden, the artist is also Yoshida (if not noted earlier) so the two styles should be almost congruous with one another.
You are absolutely correct LD, I knew this though I'm not sure I made an explicit mention of it anywhere. He also did Final Fantasy III DS, I believe, so both games are great resources for sprite designs. On the main Japanese site for FFG if you go under systems you can see the designs for a majority of the jobs I believe. There are definitely some cool designs in there.
Sorry, I haven't really got time to work on the sash. I'll quickly work on it. Also, I've lost japanese site link. Anyone can post the link? Thanks.
Okay here is a new attempt at the sash. Anyone take a guess at where I got it? I'm thinking this is going to do the trick, especially since it covers up his shirt tails almost perfectly and will make the overall process much easier.
Weird thing is that it is only two shades of red. Anyone think it needs another? Also does the rear view need the sash one pixel down?
I think I would go one pixel lower.
Looks like you yanked it off a dress or gown, taking just a segment of it rather than the whole thing.
I think it looks pretty good overall.
I think he took it from Luso's sprite.
It looks Pretty good overall.
It looks good, but I think it needs a third shade--a dark red for depth's sake. Are you maxed out on colors?
And I have a feeling AB is right about it being from Luso. Though I wouldn't have guessed him on my own.
It is Luso, and actually I think it needs an middle shade not a darker shade. At least the colors I borrowed, thanks Jimmy, had a third shade in the middle of these two. I believe I have one last color to use so I should be good to go. I'm glad people like it. my only other option for a sash would be to edit the Ninja's swinging belt , making it a bit larger.
Yes, one pixel lower for the rear. It's looking good ^^
And yeah, another shade would be better.
Hmm, alright try out a middle shade--regardless of whether the next shade is lighter or darker than the current darkest shade, it'll add depth, and that's what the sash needs.
This knot looks great, but I would add third red as some said already
Loving the mask design. I was trying to nail one down in paint when I was at work a month or two ago, but I don't think I have it any more. At the time, I believe I was trying to sprite the Dread Pirate Roberts.
