Title: GeneralStrife's Sprites
Post by: GeneralStrife on June 08, 2010, 02:14:36 pm
I plan on making a new sprite.
I plan to base it on this person right here.
Probably hood down, might make another version with hood up.

I have no idea where to start and therefore require guidance from a seasoned spriter

id think the male summoner sprite would be a good start for the cape and hood design with the hood down. for the hood up. id use either loffrey or meliadouls hood and combine it with the summoner cape.

i would love to see the hood down version i like Raven's hair. you could use my "miang2" head for her hair, the hair is 3 color shades it would be easy to change to black and mod slightly

Hmm yes i think the challenge will be the colors
Title: Re: New sprite Guidance
Post by: Zozma on June 08, 2010, 05:37:39 pm
It shouldn't be too hard. the best thing to do is borrow color palettes from existing sprites.

a good blueblack you could get from my custom "lust" sprite's hair and that shade of purple? hmm i dont think anything has that naturally

or perhaps the skeleton's cape color, its more indigo than blue when u compare it to other blue palettes in fft...

EDIT 3 :
I Need MAJOR Crits as this is my first go at custom spriting, and i am sure i have hundreds of mis placed pixels.

good for a first attempt, you did that very fast. now obviously the legs need to be modded...

is her haircolor and cape color using the same colors? if not then make her hair black with a blue sheen id say...
glad you took my advice on using miang's hair, i think it was a perfect match....

Raven update..I decided to try my butchering skills again.
Suspenders removed...her boobage is currently a black hole...head alignment possibly fixed
I'm basically shouting at my computer going FFFFUUUU cause I keep messing up and having to undo and unsure where some of the head ive got would go...maybe i should start over and slap the body onto the head instead of vice versa as i have been doing...also 24 colors Bah..

No don't do that General! Heads are easier to replace than bodies. You just need to figure out how to replace the legs...and make it look more like a swim suit or whatever it is she is wearing under the cape...imo the colors are very good.

Terra's legs are perfect for it....i just gotta figure out how im gonna go about it

Edit: Also the male summoner port minus the head is just perfect too

Why don't you use the female thief body or Lijj's female viking and add a the summoner cape?

Currently fixing various portraits in our DL section. There are many mis-aligned ones, causing errors on character portraits in game.

Post by: Lijj on May 08, 2011, 06:19:43 am
Thanks General Strife. I have a problem with that; I've posted a few misaligned portraits.  I thought I updated Female Generic Knight already though.
If it's the Terra I did about a year ago I'm not sure I want it on the main page cause the portrait isn't any good and the sprite's got those large thief hands.
I'll add the others tomorrow early along with Kage's additions and more.
btw Why don't you have the finished Picture of Meliadoul as an avatar?

No complaints about the choice but that's an unfinished version.

I dunno, I don't know how to export a port off of a sprite. This one was already by itself posted as a PNG. My weakest link is ports...don't know how to change one for a sprite etc.
Title: Re: GeneralStrife's Sprites
Post by: GeneralStrife on May 08, 2011, 11:54:29 am
Also, Lijj have you thought of putting the symbol that's on your generic male knight's cape on the female's too?
The male Gen knght has got to be one of my favorite sprites that you made. It is really shexy. But I feel like the female could be a little more similiar.

Working on the mindmaster for CoP. This obviously isn't the final product. It needs a portrait and koko may want something else done to it. I am not the man to ask for a portrait, heh.

The alma contest may have conquered my fear of portraits. (That doesn't mean I'm good at them.)
I decided to run in full blown doing it.
Hair, skin tone, and outfit colors are off. I don't know what to do next. Need a heavenly spriter good at a portrait for advice. I wanna thank cheetah and wolf and all the other spriter bros for the event for getting me re interested in spriting and makin the section active again.
Tell me what you think of the raven portrait, still needs the diamond in her forehead which I have no ideas how to do

The portrait that you are using as a base is kind of lacking a forehead, so that is part of your problem. This is a step in the right direction, keep refining it. Though I think you might want to consider using a different head as a base.

Ehh...well I used it cause zozma showed me it and I agreed that it looked kinda like her...not sure what else could be used.

ravens hair completely covers her ears, actually the hair on this blue mage, if lengthened in the back and changed to purple, would be a better fit for her... Miangs portrait could use an update for that matter... oh well

Sorry General, that portrait isn't going to cut it. I actually change the design later and it is a blindfold now instead of a mask. I will try to post soon my latest attempts so that people can take a real stab at this. There are like to versions of this sprite already on the main page, I should get this original up there.

I am just really bad about leaving various sprites laying around near complete.

On the port, the mask looks to... straight. It's a line from point A to point B. You should curve it slightly so it looks more natural.

Looks really nice! I like the hair and the blue with the black.

Yeah, I am with Durbs. I think the band needs some shading.

Not sure if anyone point this out but on the portrait her hair is split down the middle and her sprite, the hair is split on the left side.

IMO if we have a Blue Mage, we need some whites on the sprite and feather. Those are features BM should have. I best some turban wth feather on would work. To make her seem like a girl, just give her long hair coming out of it. Currently it is just Balmafula, no matter how you look at it.

Okay after searching in what i will now call the fifty years spriting war, I found the fran.
I want some professional opinion ( Kage, wolf, lijj, twin  :P ) could it be used as a basis for viera sprites? What are your concerns? God, it needs some major cleaning up if it is even salvageable.

And for whatever reason this equally messy Viera Red Mage doesn't have ears.
Title: Re: GeneralStrife's Sprites
Post by: Twinees on August 12, 2011, 04:47:19 am
Whoever made that tried to squeeze in too much detail into a small sprite.
I don't think this is salvagable without doing a lot of work unfortunately. I wouldn't recommend using this as a base... you will need to find a base with similar clothing to Fran's if you want to pull this off. I think you should just make a new one, and use that as a (some what bad) reference and the FFXII:RW sprite as a reference also. Hmm... if you do intend to make anothe Viera, i wouldnt recommend making Fran as her armor may be difficult to draw, perhaps Shara would be easier?

Unfortunately the Red Mage isnt any better :/

It sure was!

Raven's hair in the TV show always looked like a bad wig to me. It's not fair to make it look like hair now.

Sometimes you have to forfeit what it looks like with what will look good in-game.
(also, eyes on the Hayley portrait seem a little odd.)

EDIT:
Lirmont, maybe try something a little like this. My shading is prolly off (never been too amazing with shading), but it seems a little more natural than what you have.

GS, why are you working at portrait sizes of 64x96? It is much much easier to work at the normal size of portraits (32x48).
If you can't come up with something that you are happy with right now Generalstrife, put it to the side for a little while and work on something else. Build up the skills on other sprites that you need for this sprite, then come back to it. I did the same thing with Dart, I wasn't happy with the original design and came back to it later and it looks much better than it did then.

I agree with twin. I still suck and cannot create my own custom sprite/portait (in full minus the edge concept)

You have the enthusiasm to be a great spriter. Most skills come with practice and just dealing with art in general, but without the enthusiasm and motivation  a good spriter may as well be a bad one because nothing will be accomplished. I know you can do head swaps, but how about this... send me a message there a few things I could have done if you are interested.

I think the problem with this one lies in the visible portion of the face's intersection with the shadow. I think maybe some more of it needs to be visible? Something about the shadow from the hood looks off. I can't tell if the problem is that not enough face is visible, or if it's that the place where the shadow/face intersect is an awkward shape.
A really unhelpful criticism, sorry.
