Zodiac, it's even crazier than we thought! Here's what I got from testing the different bytes:

okay so finally there is a place for spriters! well guess what
ive been using a tool for several years called "snespalette" or something to that effect. technically its supposed to edit snes color palettes, however, fft sprites use 16 colors just like alot of snes sprites, making this an excellent tool for easy palette modification. by the way ive also made a version of Teta that has been given almost all the battle animations.

well anyway! if you export a sprite, and then open it with snes pal, you can see all the color palettes and change them to whatever you want, its very easy, then just save and re insert the sprite. let me show you a few screenshots. of my work.

I had a crazy good idea today that kinda fits in this thread.  I wondered why Orlandu has purple armor, then I realized I can change that!  Does anyone have any suggestions for palette swaps for any characters?

So far my idea list is:

Orlandu's Armor
Rafa/Malak color scheme
New Shrine Knight color scheme

Colour changes. Dread

I don't know if you guys have seen much amateur character design or modification but there seem to be "colour tiers". Black and Red are used the most and when I say the most I mean 100% of the time. If we do change any colours, lets try to be a bit more imaginitive than that. Also, gold and silver are pretty big for shiny characters. Again, paint drying.

So that being said, Orlandu doesn't need a colour change. His armour looks good. It has some character.

Rafa and Malak have pretty darn boring outfits though but I'm not sure what you could do to fix them using a palette swap. Maybe a small sign or emblem would help things along.

Orlandu has a purple armor because Purple = Black on FFT.

I completely agree on the black/red statement.

For Orlandu, I was thinking a grey of some sort with a gold, light blue, or dark green trim.  For the shrine knights, I'm not sure what I want to try yet.  And for Rafalak, I might just try a new sprite set all together for them.  Randomagic + goofy looks = boot.  But, I'm going to try some color swaps on them first, mainly the belt area.

Light blue trim on his current armour might look pretty good. If it was a slightly darker shade of purple, it might come up even better but my preference at this stage is no change.

I really think gray is going to turn out a little bit ho-hum but I'll wait to see how the whole thing looks.

By the way, the black and red issue obviously doesn't apply to your Red Mage.  :)

Obviously :)

But, I'm still trying to lay off the black on the red mage, because of the overdone factor.  However, the two images I picked from FFXI as my inspiration and they both have a black vest/chestplate, so I caved.

You're probably right about the ho-humness of Orlandu's grey armor, but I'm still gonna play with it.  I GOTTA PLAY!

=o

So THAT's what it is! I'm a red and black fanatic too, so I'll leave the sprite making to you.

Hey Vincent I have a few questions about the FFT Palette you posted. So my understanding was that it was a list of all the available colors that could be used in FFT listed in RGB with there respective color balances. However when I made a Palette of all of them the selection looked rather lacking.

What am I doing wrong? I just went down your list and painted them right to left. The blank spot is because the list repeated itself at one point. I just itching to take a crack at some of these sprites and I just want to have the correct colors to be using.

EDIT:So I messed up the colors the first time, but it is fixed now and my questions still hold.

Oh, you can mix the bytes.  I just didn't want to list all those combinations. For example:

1111: 136 Red, 64 Green, 32 Blue

Just add the effects of each number.
