Title: Replacing Random Generic Names
Post by: mav on January 24, 2010, 02:45:01 pm
So apparently there are lists of the random names generated for males, females, and monsters in FFT; there are 768 names total (256 for males, 256 for females, and 256 for monsters). You can check out what I believe is the WotL version here (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Final_Fantasy_Tactics_Random_Names). There used to be a list of the names used in Vanilla, but I haven't found it yet.

So I had a couple thoughts: have we found out how to replace these names? If so, LD, have you replaced these names? If not, should we replace these names? And finally, if so, then what names should we replace these with?

On this subject, each generic character comes with a specific quote tied to their name. You can read the list of them right here (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197339/16311)...unfortunately these quotes are associated with the names used in Vanilla...but if we're replacing the names, we might as well update and replace the quotes too (assuming we know how).

If this topic is as strange and unnecessary as I think it is, feel free to disregard it--it's just something that popped into my head a while back.

Well Mercenaries is changing a lot of other things.  Why not?  It would be a great opportunity to slip in even more subtle references.

I definitely support this.

Good, good. Now all we need to know is whether it can be done, whether it needs to be done, and how do it.

Can't you do this just by changing the names in FFTacText?

This new poster is indeed Correct.

Hah, of course. I don't know why I didn't even think about that. Welcome to the board, FDC.

I think LD's been pretty busy for the last few days--he hasn't posted in a while. Hopefully he likes this idea, cause getting the names done shouldn't take too long. The quotes may, but I dunno.

Yup, we can just use Tactext.
Most individual quotes' entry are like this: "........",

When I first came here in FFhacktics, this was the thing I wanted to find..
a patch with the generic char quotes.. :P

Actually, I placed that link in my first signature ever!
But no one seemed to care...

I cared MiKe--if it wasn't for your sig I would have never known about that little gem. I remembered someone having it in their sig, I just wasn't aware that it was you...

Anyways, I guess we'll have to continue holding off on this until LD returns...till then, just come up with as many names as you can.

Just an idea, some of those random names could be the names of users who contributed with Mercenaries.

You just enter a battle and you see a Trancer named Kagebunji,a Gambler named Mav,a Scryer named Jimmy and an Arbalist named Mike.

Haha. Its nice to see that I'm IN the game, literally ^^
But for me, its best not to. I preferred random names rather than names on the sprite that's contributed. If so, then I will have two names or more in the game; Scholar, Scryer, Knight and more. Lol.

I thought about that too, Blood, but there are just too many people that may end up without acknowledgments...Some people may think it's too juvenile too, likewise most of us don't have names that are cool enough to fit in with the Mercenaries environment.

Haha. That's even better reason than mine!!
Yeah, our names aren't cool enough ^^

No no,the names can appear with any generic unit in the game, not only in the ones you contributed, like a normal random generic name

Ah, well, that's good but still, our names don't really fit well in FFT, like what mav said.

Wow, should have responded to this some time ago... I might add in other FF characters, but I absolutely Hate self-inserts. So no chance of any of our names making it in.

Better late than never. So how should we go about doing this? I think coming up with 768 names is gonna be a challenge (256 for males, 256 females, 256 monsters). So maybe we can just come up with a couple handfuls each and just insert them over the really ridiculous ones. Oh and what about those quotes? They might be too hefty of an insert though.

Whatever, this is just a little fun thing we can do on the side. In fact, it's actually a pretty easy way for troves of members to leave a mark on this patch.

Ah, Quotes... I have a very special purpose for those, which is to give Rad and Ramza more character. If I can ever get it working. Remember that Quotes only appear if those people are in your party, and if Rad and Ramza are your only party... yeah that's basically it. But other names I wouldn't mind replacing. I don't plan on replacing the Whole of them, but some of them are just a bit odd.

Is that right? Well that makes this a lot easier. So how would you like us to go about doing this? Should we start posting some name suggestions or what?

Certainly. Anything you have in mind could be potentially used.
