pcsxr crap
« on: January 20, 2014, 12:49:54 AM »
Update: PGXP has desperately obsoleted this compatibility list. So many improvements, it's astonishing. Check it out.

In case anybody happens to care in any capacity, this is my experience in using the 'improved GTE accuracy' checkbox in the OpenGL2 plugin setup.

If 'no improvement' is stated, it doesn't necessarily mean that it behaves exactly the same as with the option turned off, just that the jitter is still everywhere and perceptibly still just as bad as leaving it off.

So apparently I derped the hell out and my Dragon Warrior VII rip was ruined somehow. Re-ripped the discs and they load just fine now. The improvement is among the best, for sure.

While my RPGs are all next to my bed, Parasite Eve II is deep in the basement, and I'm not gonna go digging for it anytime soon, so that will be saved for a later date. Not that anybody really likes that game to begin with.

Yay someone in Hacktics plays Ace Combat! The first one I played was Ace Combat 3 JP version. There's a BIG difference between the JP and the US version. JP version had real characters in them + branching storyline + anime cutscenes while the US version I don't even know where to start what things they removed from the original.

Okay, no idea what the deal is, but Parasite Eve II crashes on the Square EA screen on PCSX-R, pSX, Mednafen, even god forsaken ePSXe. Disc looks perfectly clean, no idea what's up. No other Square game really responds well anyway, so probably nothing lost.

i have never managed to run PE2 with emulator ISO or CD the game never gets to pass the square screen and if you make it run the game will crash or freze after a few minutes of gameplay.
if you ever hear of someone finishing the game with an emu then please let me know how the heck he/she did it because i really want to give it a replay.

no seriously i even tried with ePSXe but it didnt work... and i only use that piece of shit when PSX fails to run a game correctly such as vagrant.

That can often be a problem, since if it lets something work when it'd break on a real playstation, that leads to unnoticed and unfixed bugs.

What Kaijyuu said. Example: Journey of the Five. Until I joined as a tester, nobody understood why it worked in ePSXe and not a real PlayStation. It's the ZSNES of PlayStation emulators. The reason modders can't have nice things.

I'll just assume it is because they built it to work off of the PC hardware with none of the restrictions that the PS1 had. Or it works around the limitations. I'll assume it's a coding nightmare.

Edit: So, as a modder, the best one that our modders are using pSX?

Generally speaking, if you want the best-looking 3D, use PCSX-R with the pack-in OpenGL hardware video plugin; if you want console-accurate display, use Mednafen/RetroArch or PCSX-R with edgbla's Bladesoft video plugin.

pSX 1.13 is very lightweight and quick on even older or less impressive computers and has a nice built-in debugger that is useful for modders. It also doesn't have any major or minor bugs when playing FFT, so it gets the recommendation for the, "I need a debugger" and, "my toaster is more powerful than my computer" situations. Just note that it isn't exactly the most accurate emulator overall, and that it is very possible to write code that will execute perfectly on pSX but fail completely on a real PlayStation.

Thanks Toshiko, I'm not quite ready to write my own ASMs yet, but if it's easiest on the pSX 1.13 then that's what I shall move to.
I might use PCSX-R for my Arena Vids. Beauty never hurts. :)

Anyway, a thanks for the info above, since you guys provide this to make us less savvy people better as well.

If you get a black screen, it's because you're using a version put out during the massive oops that causes most games to not run on Windows. Update to current nightly build, not current stable version. That bug existed for nearly a year on Windows before it was fixed, and in that time, most games black screen with the stock graphics plugin (the one with GTE accuracy), but run fine with any other plugin.
