Requesting an Assist
« on: January 03, 2019, 04:48:14 AM »
So I have a plan for a more or less minor overhaul, mostly to add a sort of gotta catch em all aspect to it. My plan is to add in a few custom non generics to be potentially recruited in story battles, some with story significance and some without. In addition i planned to throw in some generics for the player to keep an eye on and recruit, with better equipment or more advanced jobs for the time, what have you.

What I actually need help with is potential event editing, since I'm very new to this and am just figuring things out. I planned to have some story significant characters cheat death, for lack of a better phrase, and I would like to have some mention of that if they're sent into a story battle. (Not necessarily major, but along the lines of the interactions between Agrias, Gaffgarion and Ramza in the Gallows map) I'm figuring things out as i go along so swapping out sprites and whatnot has mostly become second nature. Given that there are only so many sprites that can be officially used for modded characters, it's not planned to be a massive list of characters.

If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Reply here, or send me a message on discord if I don't reply quickly. Thanks in advance!

That's just not going to happen. There hasn't even been a handful of talented eventers in all of FFH's history.

There are some reasons for this:
    - It takes 10+ hours to learn
    - Each event takes 2-10+ hours to make depending on your experience level
    - Making good events requires to be open to criticism and asking our help (which we are more than willing to offer to those who want to learn)

Eventing is one of the rarest skill on FFH and one of most time consuming activity when it comes to modding the game. It is, from my perspective, not hard to event. It is just a bit tedious and time consuming.
With this post, saying you want someone to make events for you, you're basically asking: "I want to make a mod. I'll do 5% of the work. Could someone else do 95% of it for me?"

Many others have tried to recruit eventers in the past and yet, all have failed.

Be sure to read the rules topic: http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=8192.0

Oh wow, I legitimately didn't know that was so difficult. Well that's perfectly fair. I'll just look into it myself then, and should i end up with any progress I may post it here (or in the appropriate topic, since i also didnt realize i put it in the wrong one to begin with. >.>), but aside from that, I guess this is useless. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah. Adding a bit of extra dialogue here and there isn't too bad in and of itself; if you know what you're doing, you could probably make some very simple edits to drop those custom characters in existing events (preferably ones with little impact on the story so as not to steal someone else's spotlight) and give them actual lines to say.
Still, yeah, you'd be looking at an hour or two per event depending on how much you were editing it (for example, are you completely redoing the setup for the fight because it makes no sense to just drop the character right in the scene?) and how much practice you've had: once you know the commands well enough, it's easy to identify the exact point where you want to drop your edits in, but at first it's more than a little daunting.

But then setting up in-battle dialogue? Each one of those counts as its own, separate event, with its own trigger that'd need to be set, pointed at the right event ID and everything.

I agree that it's not hard, but you're really not going to find anyone willing to spend the time on all of that for you. It'd take you maybe two, three hours to get all the pre-existing sprites imported and characters sprinkled throughout the ENTDs in the Patcher, and that's including all the planning for which battles you want to add them in and how you want their jobs to go.

If you're willing to take the time to learn it yourself, Elric's event tutorial is here. It's a bit outdated; with newer versions of the event editor, some of the command structures have changed, but going through the tutorial as is is still worth your while. Once you've done that, here is the newest Event Editor; it has a built-in Instruction Viewer and error checking when you save, which makes it very easy to transition from the older commands to the newer ones.
