General / Tales of Phantasia: patch release
« on: December 31, 2012, 08:23:58 PM »
http://tales-cless.org/

After almost a decade of work, Cless, the lead on the project, has announced that an english patch for the PSX version of Tales of Phantasia will be released today. This might not be the most epic, but certainly the most persistent effort of a modding/translation project I have ever heard of. I would personally appreciate any support you could show Cless and the Phantasian Productions site by trying out the patch.

Note that I have no personal involvement in this patch, but have simply been a long time fan who has been impressed by the work done on this project.

Decade of the Zombie:

Halloween is approaching, and one of my favorite parts of the holiday (now that I'm not allowed to go tricker-treating) is the annual FFH Halloween Spriting Competition. The theme of this particular competition is Zombies, and this is for a number of reasons. First, because Halloween is the zombie time of year. Second, because FFT currently lacks an actual generic zombie sprite (no Zalbagg doesn't count). Third and most importantly, because zombies have completely taken over the US. There are tv shows, shirts, blow up dolls, underwear, freaking everything. I feel like this all started about 8 or 9 years ago and things have turned into zombie feeding frenzy of marketing. I'm guessing that in about 1 year though the market will be so saturated that there will be a major backlash and zombies will stumble and moan back into obscurity. So while I'm sure we are all pretty sick of zombies, I say we finish out the Decade of the Zombie with a bang.

For a low tier entry in this competition I would recommend taking your favorite character or class, and zombiefying them. Zombie Zalbagg would be the most piss poor example of this, and I expect better from our community. Rotting flesh, exposed bone, and all kinds of other decay are encouraged. More intrepid spriters may attempt a full on zombie, completely unrecognizable from it's base class. Plus, don't forget that humans aren't the only living things that can be zombiefied. Similarly undead demons such as vampires, skeletons, and the such would also work. The theme may seem limiting, but as always creativity and stretching the bounds of the theme are encouraged.

This is once again a beginner's level spriting competition and even if you have no spriting experience this is a great chance to give it a try. Feel free to post multiple versions of the same entry to get feedback and improve upon it, just insure that the final version meets all Submission Requirements. See the contest thread in the Spriting Section for official rules and additional details.

New Project Ideas / Final Fantasy VII Project
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:06:58 PM »
Current News:

Recruiting to Fill Positions

Twinees, Pokey, and myself have been bouncing around ideas for a couple weeks now and we have developed the basic concept for the patch to the point that we are ready to bring more people on board. Specifically we are looking for a writer and an event editor. To fill these positions, since there has been quite a lot of interest, we are holding what will essentially be tryouts. This is mostly to have people show case their skills and display their interest in the project, and we will not necessarily only be picking one person for these positions. Once again this is a team effort and we will try to find ways to utilize anyone who is interested in contributing.

To start things off I am posting the basic outline of what we are envisioning for the opening scene of this patch. There is the setting and the basic information we want covered within sample lines, but this by no means contains the exact dialog that we are looking for. The task of all those who wish to tryout for the writer position/s is to fill in the script. Once we have a final script for the event drawn together, then tryouts will begin for the event editing position/s creating an event for said script.

Guidelines:
1) WotL naming conventions and dialect will be used for FFT characters. Besrudio for example.
2) FFVII characters using the dialects they had from the USA translation of FFVII. This means that Barret sounds like Mr. T. This also means that Cid and Barret should cuss in character, but with appropriate censorship inline with the original FFVII.
3) Characterization is greater than plot. This is essentially a Gaiden adventure involving teleportation, time travel, amnesia, and inter-dimensional travel. The plot is never going to be believable or engrossing, so it is very important that the characters are instead. I would recommend lots of research on the original FFVII crew so that you can keep them in character.
3a) We are looking for a relatively light hearted tone for the overall story. Once again it is ridiculous, so lets make sure to poke fun at it a bit as well.
4) The following outline is relatively rough and does allow for some wriggle room especially in regards to items 1 through 3a. It can't be too much longer, but some good character moments would be appropriate. Also adding any stage cues or actions to help guide later event editing is always great (but don't go overboard).
5) I'm going to put a rough end date on this of two weeks from now of October 12th. This is subject to change and I will always be happy to see what people come up with.
6) All submissions can simply be posted in this thread. If for some reason you are opposed to that, email me at cheetah569@hotmail.com
7) If you have any questions are need clarification of this rough outline feel free to post them.

Opening Scene Outline
Setting: Start in the workroom with Barret, Cid, and Besrudio standing around the teleporter thing. They are giving some context as to what is going.
Besrudio: According to Besrudio the teleporter has been showing signs of functioning ever since he first got it, with the greatest example being when the Zodiac stone was present and transported Cloud to the workroom.
Barret: briefly relates his experience of being teleported somewhere within Goug and being found by Besrudio and them making the connection that Barret knew Cloud and that they both had been teleported here.
Cid: makes snarky remarks about how little help Barret was in actually fixing the teleporter and that if he (Cid) hadn't found his way to Goug shortly after they still wouldn't have a clue as to what to do.
Action: Just then the teleporter starts activating and a green materia appears and drops to the floor.
Besrudio: makes a comment that their adjustments to the machine were obviously successful since things are now teleporting directly into the workshop.
Barret: "Unfortunately, everything that has teleported up to this point has presumably been scattered across the continent."
Besrudio: "Yes, there seems to be no pattern in the placement of the few items and materia from your dimension that we have found thus far. A larger exploration of the area may help us determine the radius of the teleporter"
Barret: "I'm more interested in finding the rest of our crew than our supplies. If the two of us and Cloud have made it here already, I going to assume that we all are."
Cid: "Or will arrive, you have to remember that though we seemingly all left our dimension at the same time, we appear to be arriving at different times."
Barret: "Now that the teleporter is depositing our supplies all here though, it is time to go look for our friends right?
Cid: "Yeah that's the plan. Besrudio can safekeep anything or anyone that comes through the teleporter and continue researching a potential way back to our dimension."
Besrudio: "Make sure to check back often for new supplies and information."
Cid: "Where do we start looking though?"
Besrudio: "My last letter from Mustadio mentioned that Cloud was still traveling with he and Ramza. They were travelling from ___ to ___. Though I must remind you that Cloud had no memory of where he came from."
Barret: "Cloud can be a bit peculiar like that, he has had too many people mess with his head over the years. He will come around though, he always does."
Cid: "If I'm learning my Ivalice geography correctly though, that is a rather long ways off."
Barret: "I heard an interesting rumor at the bar today. Apparently a bar maid in Gariland broke up a fight involving a group called the Grog 11, the locals seemed rather impressed."
Besrudio: The Grog 11 is a pretty notorious band of monks.
Cid: Sounds like we have a couple leads then.
End Event

If there is one main series FF game that is likely to get a lot of support as a FFT patch project it is FFVII. It is very popular and there are a lot of great sprites for the characters already created. The primary barrier to such a project is that a direct port of FFVII into the gameplay of FFT is pretty unrealistic. The question is then what type of project involving the characters from FFVII in the world and gameplay mechanics of FFT would actually be fun and achievable. I'm starting this thread because there has been a lot of interest in such a project but I have yet to hear any ideas that would meet these expectations. Here are a couple ideas I can think of to get people thinking:

1) Start regular FFT game with all the FFVII crew. Replace Ramza with Cloud or whoever and just have that be your party throughout the entire game. There are of course infinite variations of this idea where you could have various FFFVII characters replace different storyline party members from FFT. Maybe there could even be some event editing to draw parallels between the two stories without actually trying to do a faithful retelling of FFVII's story.
2) New but simple story centered around FFVII. Have all the crew teleported into the Besrodio's work room instead of just Cloud and move on from there. Have a little gaiden adventure with the characters in the FFT world. Sephiroth could stur up some trouble in Ivalice and fun times would ensue.
3) All the FFVII characters as your party and you have to play through a Deep Dungeon sequence of battles. Or some other variation of focusing on gameplay and battles and essentially no story.

What ideas do people have? Even before organizing a team I would be interested if there are even any good ideas out there.

Spriting / Instructor Darlavon
« on: August 06, 2011, 07:17:25 PM »
Well here is a quick concept for a pretty easy sprite for Darlavon. He is a minor character, but we have a great portrait for him so we might as well give him a sprite as well. I'm sure there are some patches that could incorporate him. I have no intention of being able to finish this on my own, especially since I finish hardly any sprites, so all help is welcome. I have already talked to Nojgaard about helping. Right now he is a combination of:

Knight Body
Weigraf Hair
Dycedarg Beard.

What do people think of the basic design and palette? I'm really happy with his head and hair color. The black gloves and boots are working decently well. In his portrait it appears he has a brown cape. It kind of looks like he has Weigraf's scarf as well, but I'm not sure how to incorporate that into a design.

Alma Gets a Job!

We have a total of 24 valid entrees into this Spriting Contest, this is an incredible turnout. The results of the vote will be announced at the time listed on the poll. Only 1 vote per user, please do not vote using alt accounts and it is generally considered poor form to vote for your own sprite. Please refer to the judging criteria for guidance in voting, though it should be noted that all the following sprites are considered valid entrees. Feel free to discuss or ask questions in this thread, however there is no need to post how you voted.

If you submitted a sprite that is not on this vote list, and you do not believe is failed to meet the submission rules, feel free to PM me with questions.

Judging Criteria:
1) Creativity: This covers both the job idea and the physical design of the sprite. Find original, intelligent, and witty ways to follow the general theme of the contest.
2) Artistic Ability: The more original elements incorporated into the sprite the better. However, make sure to balance this with the visual quality of the sprite. General pixel art ability, design, and palette choice are important here.
3) Valid Submission: There are clear expectations for submission, please try your best to follow them.

News / Official Sprite Competition: Alma Gets a Job
« on: July 04, 2011, 06:22:11 PM »
Alma Gets a Job:

One of the most popular FFT spriting endeavors is to put Ramza's head on a different sprites body. Following in this tradition it is time to give Alma a bit more attention and give her a real job. Take Alma's standard head and find her a new body. One of the standard FFT female jobs is perfectly acceptable or she can have any other kind of job. Making Alma a standard chemist could be amusing or she could be an Assassin from Assassin's Creed, creativity is key. Making alterations to Alma's head such as giving her a crown or some sunglasses is also perfectly acceptable. Additional guidelines and submission format can be found under the Submission Requirements header.

This is a beginner's level spriting competition and even if you have no spriting experience this is a great chance to give it a try. Feel free to post multiple versions of the same entry to get feedback and improve upon it, just insure that the final version meets all Submission Requirements.

Submissions are due by midnight of the 20th of July. On the 21st all entries will be organized and a public voting poll will be opened for every community member to cast a vote. The poll will have a clearly indicated end time of the 24th to celebrate Alma's Birthday. The poll will be blinded and all users are allowed one vote, please respect the voting process.

Exact awards for the top three entrants are still in development. Expect at minimum some kind of permanent recognition for your accomplishments. Do not expect a particularly tangible award, such as something you would receive by mail.

Submission Examples (Ramza as model):

Minimal Submission: Simple Headswap. A submission of this quality will likely not fair well. However, a creative job title or a slick palette change here could help.

Job Title: Evil Squire
Sources: Ramza Ch1 (SQUARE), Delita Ch1 (SQUARE)

Average Submission: Headswap with added elements from other sprites and palette. With this mix of elements the sprite should still be relatively quick and easy to put together, but should also allow for a lot creativity and gives people an opportunity to show off their skills. Note that this rating is based on being all original work, this example sprite is the work of Vanya.

Job Title: Defender
Sources: Ramza CH2&3 (SQUARE), Zalbag (SQUARE)

Superior Submission: Using pieces from lots of different sprites or custom elements and palette. Really show off your mad skills. Note that this rating is based on being all original work, this example sprite is the work of Kagebunji and Cheetah.

Job Title: Hunter
Sources: Ramza Ch1 (SQUARE), Male Archer (SQUARE), Male Knight (SQUARE)

Introduce Yourself! / Cheetah
« on: March 15, 2011, 12:39:31 AM »
I have been around here for a long time. Started off with spriting, then heavy on event editing, and then moved on to hacking in general. I have been a moderator of the forum for well over two years, though my activity has dipped considerably since I started grad school for my PhD in Clinical Psychology two years ago.  I will fill in my "Resume" later.

I am always happy to give tips and help out as time allows.

I'm posting this for two reasons:
1) I'm super proud of my animated Avatar and sig and wanted to brag.
2) I'm going to Eastern Europe for two weeks and wanted any who cared to know so people didn't think I disappeared on them.

Ultimately I think I will just use this introduction thread for personal announcements and comments, mostly because I have too little time to devote much time to IRC to get to know people well there.

Spriting / Hunter
« on: January 26, 2011, 08:56:47 PM »
This sprite has been worked on by many people. Started by Kage or R999 and I'm trying to finish it up with a custom hat with the help of others. Most of these posts come from Kage's sprite topic, I'm just separating them so that we can focus and get this sprite done.

Here is a very fast WIP of what I was thinking for a different hat. You can see the original "green beret" from FFT that I used as a base. Oh and I'm not a fan of all the brown on the Assassin. I think she would look a lot better with no headband and a belt or stitching on her dress.

News / All Prior Bans are Null
« on: December 15, 2010, 07:50:06 AM »
In the spirit of new beginnings all previous members of the FFH forum who received a temporary or permanent ban are no longer blocked from accessing their accounts or the forum. This in no way reflects the judgment of previous leadership in making correct decisions in banning these members. This decision is less about the individual members who were banned and the severity of the infractions they were accused of, and more about establishing a solid foundation of rules to help re-foster the community at FFH. We now have concrete rules to be followed and a standardized process for administering consequences. All members, old, new, past, and present, will be held accountable equally to these new standards.

FFT: Complete / TacText Patching problems
« on: September 14, 2010, 06:34:38 PM »
So we have a problem. Somewhere along the line something happened to make it so FFTactText can no longer patch over FFT:Complete. This is obviously a large issue because it prevents FFT:C from being a base for future patches, which was a major goal of the project. Many helpful users have previously reported this problem and I had encountered it before in other versions of FFTPatcher so there was some confusion about what was going on, but with access to the most up to date versions of FFTPatcher I can say that FFT:C v.50 does not allow for text patching. Each part of the patch is divided up into dozens of individual hacks, so I'm going to start going through them to pinpoint the source of the problem and hopefully find a solution. Melonhead has been making many appearances, but I'm going to try and get in contact with him to see if he can give assistance as well.

Spriting / Japanese Spriting
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:23:02 AM »
Okay so here is an official topic for collecting spriting done by our overseas partners. Really it is kind of ridiculous that we haven't formed a better communication network than we have. Zodiac made a major step of creating a forum for them, but then we made the mistake of NOT CHECKING IT!!

http://jp.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopi ... 5&p=83#p83

These have been setting on our servers for months. So post links to japanese sites, or others, that have FFT sprites that weren't created here so that we can at least keep these different resources organized even if we don't have great communication with them. I know that we have these links laying all around in this section, but it is always impossible to find any of them when you need them.

Bugs and Suggestions / Forum Sprite Editing
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:51:18 AM »
So I was thinking about ways that I could do more hacking at work (not exactly a great venture but whatever), and I starting looking for online pixel editors. I didn't spend that much time but I found this:

http://www.splashup.com/

Kind of a buggy super light version of photoshop, and while a bit of a hassle it did what I needed it to after some experimentation. But I thought it would be great if the forum could incoorperate a tool like this for quick edits of sprites and portraits that people are working on. Showing is easier than telling, and if the tools to do it where right there it would likely really improve everyone's productivity. Might be a bit far fetched, and obviously I'm hoping there is something out there that could be built into the site because actually programming such a program would be a little over the top.

Just a thought of a way that the forum could become even more of a tool for hacking.

Or if you have any suggestions...
