As the title says, I'm doing an LP of WotL, but with some special rules and changes to hopefully make it a bit more dynamic and set it apart from all the other LPs of it. Firstly, I added special characters to my party from the get go. None of the sword skill users (Beowulf doesn't count and you know it). Beowulf, Reis, Balthier, and Rapha. However, I'm setting two fairly major restrictions to the run. Firstly each character gets access to exactly 1 other job they can pull abilities from. So no having 5 abilities from 5 different jobs, or having Auto-Potion on all members or any of that fun stuff. Secondly, grinding is being kept to the bare minimum needed to plow through the game. The rule I set is I have to lose a stage 3 times before I'm allowed even a single random battle, and then only one random battle. After that I can choose to take a random battle after every loss until I've succeeded and then it's back up to 3 times. The class choices are as follows:

Ramza: Dark Knight
Beowulf: White Mage
Reis: Monk
Balthier: Chemist
Rapha: Samurai

((They've all been given access to the classes from the get go to preserve the integrity of the challenge, so Rapha doesn't end up as every class under the sun with temporary access to other skills, Reis doesn't spend time as a knight with knight equipment, etc. This also puts Rapha in an awkward spot as she essentially doesn't have a 2nd class until late chapter 2 when Katanas become available, and I think that's pretty interesting actually.))

This should get me a fairly good mix of offense, defense, and utility while making sure every character has a unique role in the party. The only thing it really truly lacks is a reliable means of aoe damage, with Rapha being the only one to get access outside of Reis's awful Holy Breath and of course Shockwave. Side note, Ramza's getting a special restriction. Dark Knight is only going to be accessed from the 2nd chapter on for story purposes, and to make sure the 1st chapter can't be plowed through *too* easily. On that note, please enjoy the Let's Play, and I'm very welcome of critiques or suggestions! :D

I also know that this kind of thing can seem rude, so before I go stepping on toes I always want to ask about it first. That said, I've got some ideas for the Red Mage class I'd like to suggest if you'd be willing to hear them. I'm a huge, huge, HUGE Red Mage fan (I have a Red Mage tattoo!) and I built Red Mage into a hack I played for personal use a while back and it worked quite well, and I wanted to spitball a couple ideas I'd implemented if you were interested in them. If not I completely, and totally understand and wish you well nonetheless.

Event Editing / ArkthePieKing's Events
September 01, 2013, 04:25:45 pm
So like the topic said, I made my first cutscene. I think I've got a vagueish grasp on event editing, though I didn't really mess with the camera controls at all. One thing I'm not exactly sure how to do though would be changing other cutscenes to other maps. For instance, if I wanted to use a map other than the tutorial map for the first scene, how would I do that? And if I were to change the map used for the first battle and scene, what would go into that? I'm also not sure on how to use different music. I'm really anxious to start digging my teeth into this project, but I still have such an elementary grasp on all the various tools, rules, and processes that my progress is slow because I'm not getting anything actually done. Anyway, here's the fruits of my labor. Not much to look at, but I'm proud of it.

I've been following along with Elric's tutorial on event editing, and for the most part it's been going smoothly. There have been hiccups here and there, but that's part of learning. I figured them out and fixed my own problems. But this...this is just weird. I mean really weird.

I've been toying with dialogue, and for some strange reason whenever I have a name other than 'Ramza' typed, then program then wigs out and completely ruins my TEST file to the point where CDMage won't even import it. It will say something like "$xx is not a valid integer value", where xx is usually the first 2 characters in the name, though when I tried 'fffffq', xx was fq.

I've even tried typing 'Ramz', and it does that. I add that extra 'a', and suddenly presto, it's back to normal. I just can't figure it out. If I try closing the Event Editor and opening it back, it loses the ability to even change the event. I had to export TEST again and start from scratch. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever seen. Can someone enlighten me on this?

Edit: Just got an answer to my question from Raven. Apparently {Ramza} is actually a command to call up whatever you named the main character. To do any other name I'd just remove the brackets. Thanks Raven!

Hello all! At first I was hesitant posting this, but I've had excellent success with everyone being friendly in the Help! forum, and this is an idea I've been stewing over in my head for a while. A bit of backstory: I've been with a lovely lady, whom shall be referred to as Amorillo, for about 2 1/2 years. I've been ready to tie the knot for quite a while, but I just haven't found the perfect way to propose. I've considered romantic dinners, getaways to foreign lands, even proposing in a castle (Did you know Kentucky has a freaking castle in it? I didn't!). But none of them seemed genuine. I felt like I could do something that came from the heart. Something special. I've been inspired by a certain video on the internet for a long time but didn't feel like I'd be able to live up to something that amazing.

Well, I've considered it long and hard, and I decided I want to do something that great. Better even. I want to create a scenario in Final Fantasy Tactics, maybe a total of 5 or 6 maps (more or less if needed), detailing the adventures of our DnD characters while seperated from the group. After seeing all the wonderful things Jot5 has done with cutscenes, spriting, and story, I think this is the perfect way to do it. Of course I'm not planning on doing anything as large, expansive, or grand as Jot5, but it certainly inspired me to try my hand.

Of course, I don't really know what I'm doing. I can make the characters. I think I'd do a damn fine job of recreating our respective characters' stats and abilities. I'm looking forward to that. I could write the story as well. But I don't know how to make sprites or portraits, and I especially don't know how to make events. ASM hacking frightens me. It's not that I think I can't learn it, but I feel like I would probably need someone to really sit down and be willing to teach me. I have a friend who's an incredible artist who's volunteered to do the sprite and protrait work if she's given the tools, so I might try learning the tools and passing the information onto her, unless there's an easier way to do that.

I'm sorry for rambling. This whole prospect makes me nervous on a lot of levels. Any help, from anyone would be most appreciated. I don't know what information anyone would need before diving into this project, but I'd be more than willing to provide it.

Help! / Balancing a Red Mage in Vanilla.
August 22, 2013, 08:31:03 pm
Not sure if this is the correct board but I'm trying to create a good Red Mage in vanilla. I replaced the Calculator class, and gave it tier 1 and 2 fire/bolt/ice/cure. I also gave it raise, blind, and sleep. It's got abandon, short charge (to emulate doublecast as closely as I can think of) and move-Mp up. Stat wise it's essentially the love child of a thief and oracle, minus the thief's speed. Equips are knives, swords, rods, and staffs. Also hats, clothes, and robes. It seems like it's okay thusfar, but I can see it quickly falling off towards the latter half of the game. Has anyone else had luck making a solid Red Mage in the past?

So I'm trying to add a custom sprite into the game. (The Red Mage sprites on this very site.) And I click IMPORT.BMP, import it into the job I want (Calculator), and then after that I absolutely, positively, cannot figure out how to patch the damn thing into the game. There are, like, no options at all. I've been working on this for the last 3 hours, and no amount of google searches has found anything yet. Can someone please provide this simple answer? I would be forever indebted to you.

Edit: Even the tutorial I found assumes you know that much. It's like I can't win lol...
