Title: Q&A section READ HERE BEFORE MAKING NEW TOPICS
Post by: Zozma on October 04, 2008, 11:20:40 pm
If you have any questions about making or adding sprites, or anything sprite related for that matter, please take the time to read the topics that already exist or post your questions here and we will re-direct you. To the topic with the answers.

We have had far too many new topics made lately asking questions that have already been answered. From now on, these duplicate questions will be removed.  Please keep that in mind before creating any new topics in this section. Suggestions for improving this section are always welcome.

You are welcome to ask questions here if you are unsure where to find answers.

For those of you who aren't new. I ask that you please do not spam the topic with warnings to our newcomers as they are entitled to the same experience we enjoy on this wonderful site.

And remember. The best place to share your completed sprites is to subit them here: http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=405 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=405)

Thank you,

Is there a program that allows you to view your sprite in the manner it would animate in FFT without patching your ISO and testing it?
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on October 09, 2008, 03:22:35 pm
yea shishi sprite editor its got that scroll box in the lower right hand corner

Thanks much, took some searching but then I realized its part of the FFTPatcher download.

Who are the FFTactics characters that you usually overite custom sprites over? I am looking for characters that have are available for UNIT.BIN, WLDFACE.BIN and BATTLE.BIN so that I may be able to overwrite over their portraits, formation screen sprite and battle sprites. So far i have one person in mind: SOURYO the priest you see at the ending scene since I figured he is not part of the main storyline... Thanks!

Post by: DarthPaul on October 11, 2008, 08:56:32 am
well all ya have to do is scroll through both and match up and any sprite that has a both a unit and a worldface and those are the ones to overwrite or just go with one of the face characters

Post by: Zozma on October 11, 2008, 08:12:26 pm
you have to give up something to get what you want

in my case i used the guests sprites (and put their actual sprites in dupes of other characters linked to the same menu sprites)

in my patch guests NEVER appear on the menu at all. so i was able to use the  slot for Algus, to add my custom Miluda for  an example. then i put the real algus sprite into something thats kind of useless to me, like 33 zombie zalbag

this does, however, require a bit of entd editing as well.
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on October 11, 2008, 08:16:37 pm
yea i made a mistake with changing algus into a custom so when he left it kept the guest form and got rid of the one i trained

also some funny glitches appeared that made gameplay hilarious like no algus on the field but his lines appearing out of nowhere
Title:
Post by: Zozma on October 11, 2008, 08:20:27 pm
yep,

if you cheat which why would you need to with ffh?

then you might have problems here, if i put my miluda which uses 07 job/and sprite

wherever algus was supposed to be, it will look at her first... making it so guests dont appear in the party, solves a big problem tho, with them leaving and removing units. my suggestion is the ppl u add into those slots should only join after the point in the story where those guests are removed.

Ok, I'm trying out Sentinel Blade's tutorial on adding to the Unit.bin but having trouble making a 4 bit sprite in Photoshop.

I have loaded the Wiegraf sprite and pulled the second frame for use.

I created the 24x40 (96dpi) canvas and loaded the previous color table (17 w/ black for trans).

I pasted the sprite onto the canvas and clicked Save As.

Selecting .bmp I got to the options but could only choose down to 8 bit.

Can anyone tell me how and where I have erred?

Post by: SentinalBlade on October 16, 2008, 05:53:56 pm
The number of colors. make sure you onl have colors on the FIRST ROW
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on October 16, 2008, 06:51:18 pm
The color limit is 16 including the black for transparent.
Title:
Post by: digitaldragoon on October 16, 2008, 09:59:15 pm
That's really odd that Wiegraf starts with 16 plus transparency then.  I think I figured out what to do when editing Altair.  Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Sorry to doublepost, I'm getting a slightly different problem now.

I have switched over to Isilud, doing the same thing.  I have his 24x40 (96 dpi) image set with only 16 colors, including black.  I still cannot save out a 4 bit bmp for him.  This is slowly driving me insane.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on October 17, 2008, 05:44:41 pm
What program are you using to save it as a 4 bit bmp?
Title:
Post by: digitaldragoon on October 17, 2008, 09:13:03 pm
Photoshop.  I had success with CS2 but now issues in CS3.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on October 18, 2008, 12:28:25 am
Okay make sure you change the color type to Indexed. And then set it so that it is 16 colors. Then save it as a bitmap, doesn't really matter about the bit size. Then open up your BMP in Graphics Gale. Change the color depth to 16, this will make it so your palette matches up correctly, and then change it back to 256, so that it can be imported into ShiShi correctly. That should solve all your problems and is the method I use.
Title:
Post by: digitaldragoon on October 19, 2008, 10:06:05 pm
Thanks much for the clarification.  I had all of the aforementioned criteria set (indexed, only the top row of colors including black) but could not get 4 bit for the life of me.  I'll try this process with an 8 bit and bring it into Gale and then ShiShi.

I know I wrote all this stuff up before, and I will look for it. But first you should download FFTPatcher and ShiShiSpriteEditor. Also download the program Graphics Gale. Get ShiShi running, get an uncompressed FFT ISO on your computer, and start opening up the SPR sprite files in the BATTLE folder. Try doing this stuff and I will work with you from there.
Title:

you are using the psx version? or psp?

http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/tutorials.php?id=2 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/tutorials.php?id=2)

this file is like a mini cd mage, and sometimes lets you insert sprite files that are at full capacity of the given sprites space.

http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/downloads.php?id=6 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/downloads.php?id=6)

the file at the bottom of the page is in japanese, however, it will allow you to edit the unit.bin file images as well as the wldface.bin and wldface4.bin which are the menu portraits. theres a little guesswork on which buttons do what, one allows you to save(the one under the image display) one button lets you export a palette, another to import a palette, one for exporting an image, one for importing an image.

Ok i understand how to extract the battle.bin folder and the event.bin folder. But i dont uderstand how to reinsert the files back into cdmage after i have edited them :(.

Ps: mine is the psx version.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 15, 2008, 12:39:43 pm
you need to insert the file INTO the file that you are replacing. you cant simply add a new one that would screw up your game.

on cdprog you can right click the file and it gives an option to insert file into selected item. im sure cd mage works about the same way.
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 15, 2008, 02:45:00 pm
Ty. I have succesfully put the new spr file (Arcahel) to replace the old spr (Bewolf BEIO).Now how do i save it as a new iso, btw i am using cd prog.

Title:

loaded your data, not a save state tho right?

also you did test in in battle, not just look at it on the menu?
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 15, 2008, 04:48:00 pm
Save state???
Title:
Post by: Xeno3 on November 15, 2008, 06:10:55 pm
if you load from a save state, via a hard save as in able to save in battle or where ever is a save state, saving via the memory card, or at least what epsx thinks is a memory card, is the way you should save and load your game to get results, other then that things will get extremely screwy

anyone there?? :(
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 15, 2008, 07:58:47 pm
that will require you to change the first color palette to the nanten one for every one of the male and female generics... in addition you will need to do that to the palettes for the unit.bin versions as well
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 15, 2008, 08:55:59 pm
Sorry for this noobish question but how do i do that
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 15, 2008, 09:11:17 pm
use shishi to extract say the squire into a bmp file,

then with a program like GIMP change the first palette to match whichever one is the nanten.

the palette colors are in order the first 16 are palette zero (ramza's troops)
what is it palette 4 thats nanten? i cant remember...

after youve changed the palette save the file and import the bmp into the sprite and save. be careful when saving bmp files tho if you alter anything about the file such as changing it from 256 colors to 24bit or 16 colors shishi will crash when you try to import it. this will happen even if you change it back to 256 colors. do not make any changes like this to the bmp file.

Been awhile, but since nobody has responded to my question i have a new one.I have downloaded the ramzua3 Gold sprite from this site.I know how to change the in battle sprites, but how do i change the original ramzau3 formation screen sprite??

Title:

I'm almost certain he means shishi and CDmage
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 23, 2008, 01:01:36 pm
no

he's referring to this (the last post there)
http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407)

its all in japanse except for words like wldface and unit.bin

there are 5 buttons, one to import the palette of the viewed image, one to export it, one to import an image, one to export it and then the last one under the display image is to save.

unit.bin is for the unit sprite, and wldface is for the unit's portrait

i think it will only let you import them if they are 16 colors
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on November 23, 2008, 02:06:31 pm
Yes they have to be 16 colors but play around with that prog and you should get it if you read the tutorial the playing around will go smoother.
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 23, 2008, 02:09:33 pm
Thank you for the link zozma. But i still have a question, i have the ramzau3 gold sprite do i open sishisprite editor, save the pallete, then open the program FFTEVGRP and import the pallete on the original ramzau3??
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 23, 2008, 02:13:16 pm
you dont really have to do that

you could export the bmp of the whole sprite then paste a screenshot version of the portrait in, match the w and h of the image to that of one that the program exports and save the file as a 16color bmp while also making sure u dont get color loss
Title:

???
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 23, 2008, 03:13:30 pm
k

1) open Unit.Bin with this jap program

2) with the exported sprite of the new ramza as a bmp and cut the image size down to a 24 W by 40 H square leaving only the front diagonal facing frame of ramza.

3) Save the bmp as a 16 color bmp, if you lose colors then use some sort of photo/picture editing program to reduce the colors for u.

4) Import the 24 w by 40 h 16 color sprite into the unit.bin over whichever character you're replacing.

[extra step (before step 4): you may not need this step, but if you are having trouble with step 3 not letting you import the image then you can export one of the pictures, the default ramza will do, open it with GIMP and open your new ramza with gimp as well. change the colors of the 16 color original ramza to match the first 16 of your new ramza sprite. then paste that single front frame of the new ramza over the old ramza that you just changed the colors on. (this will also help you to line up the eye levels so it looks normal in the menu.]
----------------------------
Now for the portrait

you pretty much have to follow the same steps for the portrait except they are 32 x 48 pixels.

1) open your new sprite in shishi and take a screenshot.

2) Paste the screenshot in paint and then copy the portrait and paste that alone in a new paint. rotate it and cut it to the 32 x 48 size.

3) Reduce the colors to 16 and you should be able to import it after its a 16 color bmp.

(i hope someone could make a better explanation for this, it takes me less than a minute to do all this crap myself but to explain it.. i just cant)
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 23, 2008, 03:25:47 pm
WHen u say import how do i do that.??

Ps:Im using the basic bitmsp editor to cut it down to size and when i try to cut it down im always left with the last frames in the top left corner.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 23, 2008, 03:28:19 pm
those five buttons i was talking about on the jap program

that are just ?????

one imports a bmp, one exports, one imports the palette, one exports it

then the ????? under the display image saves the file. u just insert that edited unit.bin back over the original in your game
Title:
Post by: Blue Frog on November 23, 2008, 03:29:43 pm
When i cut ir down to size im left with those last to frames, its annoying.

I was just wondering, is it possible to allow mimes to have abilities and equip armor in the patching program??
Title:
Post by: Zozma on November 28, 2008, 08:11:58 pm
yeah you can give them a different skillset, i dont know about equips, i think they are kind of like monsters in that aspect that it will force everything back off of them. even with a skillset they will still mime as well.

there are ways to make other jobs look like the mime tho but then u wouldnt have them in the job wheel...

Okay I have a feeling this is like the same question Blue Frog asked but say I was trying to over write all of Agrias to Zozma's Beatrix sprite, I have shishi if I need that, I just downloaded that Japanese thing, and gonna download CDMage, now where do I start? x_x;;;;
Title:
Post by: Zozma on December 03, 2008, 08:50:54 pm
open fft in the cd program go into the battle folder insert beatrix into the "AGURI.SPR" and "KANBA.SPR" thats agrias guest and agrias party member.

any place that she appears in events will look buggy, however.

also you need to use the japanese program in the site submission downloads section to change the unit.bin sprite/portrait for it to appear properly in the menu. there, the program i posted it. its in japanese. in the event folder theres 2 files you can open and change with it wldface for the portraits and unit.bin for the sprites. u will have to guess untill u figure out the buttons but its an awesome program once u know what all the buttons do.
http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407)

--------------------------------

the first part of this is the old way. with the new program you can open the sprite directory with shishi and import the sprite over the two agrias sprites you see. you will still need to follow above direction for changing the menu portrait and sprite.

Yes been a while but i have a new question.I know the miluda sprite is a generic female and i want to change it to zozma very well done miluda sprite. How would i do that?I cant find her sprites anywhere  !
Title:
Post by: Zozma on December 08, 2008, 12:31:38 am
you mean the battle folder where the sprites are? shes not there. you have to insert her sprite into another job's sprite and create a custom job for her.

also if you intend for her only to be an enemy there are plenty of duplicate sprites, for example agrias has 2, gafgarion has 2 etc...

is it possible to allow humans to ride dragons using fftpatcher??

no i believe not
Title:
Post by: Vanya on December 14, 2008, 05:27:36 pm
You'd have to somehow swap dragons& chocobos. But then you wouldn't be able to ride chocobos any more.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on December 14, 2008, 11:05:23 pm
there are other problems with that since dragons dont have the other stopped frames. so youll  have some buggy looking stuff as well
Title:
Post by: Vanya on December 14, 2008, 11:07:17 pm
You'd have to make the Dragon sprite fit into the Chocobo sprite as well, yes.
It would take a fair bit of work there. ^_^
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on December 15, 2008, 08:26:46 pm
Actually, Asmo's done this in a much easier way and the only problem is the back of the sprite looks as if it's floating off of said creature. This is as simple as changing the Graphic for the Chocobo in the patcher.

Ok I am posting my question or at least the reply to my question in here I did as you said and found out that the error always happens on anything i choose that's lower then 256 for the bitmap but when I import 256 colors everything turns pink and screwed up but shi shi wont accept anything els but 256 color bitmaps or it will give me the error.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Thats what it says in the error dialog box but really if the game only accepts 16 bits then why will only 256 go through I dont know what to do I have honestly been trying to figure this out all night.  so I appreciate the help.

Okay, I bet this is somewhere but I can't seem to find it:

Which classes have sprites for the formation screen?  Any class that can change equipment will do.

Edit: Is there any way to use regular classes from the job wheel as special characters?  That would also work for my purposes.

I have a question about the way some sprites look normal when their Type 2.SHP and some look normal when their Type 1.SHP. So here's the question: I once tried to replace the 3 Ramza sprites with the Ajora sprite from this site, it worked but the Ajora sprite looked weird. I noticed that in shishi the Ajora sprite looked normal in type 2, and weird in type 1. I tried saving it when type 2 was in the box in the corner which, it did'nt work. So basically my question is how do I save the sprite as Type 2.SHP?

Thanks for posting your question here in the correct section. Your answer is here:

http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1527 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1527)

The sprites have different types depending on the width/size of the character. The link provides a quick guide for changing it manually with a hex editor.

Thanks for the help Cheetah, but I have another question. I opened unit.bin with the japanese program, I used graphics gale to crop the image of the sprite that I wanted to use to 24x40 (16bit by the way, if that's important) but when I tried to import the bmp, an error message popped up (Man I hate those things) that no one could ever read

P.S. I also tried 24bit, it also ended with the same error message (I think It did. I can't quite remember :? )

P.S.S. This question isn't directed towards anyone in particular

Unfortunately from what I've seen it needs to be 8 bit, but I know some of the expert spriters know how it's done.
Title:
Post by: dudeless on February 13, 2009, 11:31:23 am
It does?. I tried making it 8 bit but graphics gale messed up the colors so I didn't even want to bother using it. How do I fix the colors?

In that... I have no idea, Zozma and Cheetah should though.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on February 13, 2009, 12:26:15 pm
It probably messed up the colors because of the portrait. Make that portrait all black, there is a shape tool in Graphics Gale (good choice in programs). Then make it 8 bit, should look fine.

Post by: Cheetah on February 23, 2009, 01:17:09 am
You can get great rips of most of the sprites here: http://istaken.org/fft/ (http://istaken.org/fft/)
These will later work with FFTPatcher and ShiShiSpriteEditor, but worry about that later. Download Graphics Gale to do your spriting in, it is a pretty simple straight forward program or you can use MSPaint. There is a 16 color limit for the sprite and then a separate palette for the portrait also 16 colors, note that for the sprite the black color that becomes transparent counts as one of your 16 colors. That should get you started.

to do that, can't you just replace the sound file for random battles with a copy of the one you want, renamed ofcourse?

open iso
extract fftpack.bin
extract fftpack.bin
go to sound
delete random battle music
copy music you want as battle music
rename to original random battle music
rebuild fftpack.bin
replace old fftpack.bin with new one in the iso
done

No idea if it works, don't see why not.

so I'm messing around with sprite replacement in my PSX ISO then playing it on my PSP, the latest shishi sprite editor lets me patch straight to the ISO from the program.

I'm most interested in switching around existing sprites, for example I want to replace the generic knight with zalbag. works fine for my team, but when on an enemy team there is no palette swap for him so I get to kill nice silhouettes in the shape of zalbag.

some of the custom sprites have proper multi palette for enemy teams, so I know it can be done.

I've tried exporting them to BMP and opening them in paint and photoshop, but I can't see any noticeable difference between zalbag and a normal knight. are there certain colors in the pallets that swap out? or is there some kind of special program I need to use?

can I make him look the same on all teams or will he looks slightly different on each team?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on March 21, 2009, 12:04:00 am
You are close. Export the BMP and look at it in GIMP or Graphics Gale, they will display the palette more clearly. Just compare the Knight and Zalbag and it should become clear.

Changing the palette can be a complex process.

Go download GIMP or Irfanview. Both are free and can change palettes easily.

One thing you never, ever, want to do when editing a sprite is pick a color that doesn't already exist on the sprite. You'll mess up the format and your sprite will go wonky even if it lets you import it.

Ok, I am sorry to bother you guys.  but I don't know what to do or what is wrong I have searched for a while for answers and even tried to contact the author of the sprite I am having problems with but have not received an answer so I have decided to ask here in hopes that someone can help me.  I am trying to use AuraDragons FEMALE Dark Knight and Holy Knight sprites.  and every time I load them in the sprites are fine but the PORTRAIT is pitch black and messed up the male versions work perfectly is there something wrong with the female versions of these sprites or am I doing something wrong?  I do not want to be a bother or anything really but I want to use the FDK and FHK sprites with corresponding portrait.  I have screen shot my problem and hope that someone can explain to me what is wrong or how to fix it.  Thank you for you're time it means a lot to me. It means that the colors on the sprite file the game uses for the portrait, are all black.

Can be easily fixed, though, by changing the black to the wanted colors.

Title: Re: Q&A section READ HERE BEFORE MAKING NEW TOPICS
Post by: blade8531 on June 13, 2010, 11:31:31 am
if you are using mspaint, it uses a palette larger than 16 colors so it gets all screwy when you import it back.
you have to use graphicsgale, which can be a pain to switch to if you're used to paint (like me)
i tend to manually draw a palette onto the bmp with graphicsgale, then work in paint using the dropper tool to select colors.

if you look at the window labelled "palette" in the screenshots on this page: http://ffhacktics.com/tutorials.php?id=10 (http://ffhacktics.com/tutorials.php?id=10)
you'll notice that there are two rows of 16 colors.  the top 16 are used for the sprites, and the middle 16 are for the portrait
I think you'll be able to figure out how it works with that portrait tutorial,  that's how i learned anyway.

hope someone can go into more detail if you're still stuck.

I'm new to the site (as you can probably tell by my post count) and I have very minimal experience with spriting (pokemon splices and things of the like). I've been wanting to try my hand at making FFT sprites for the longest time and I figured this was the best place to start. I was wondering what programs are necessary to create a FFT sprite (can you just make it in paint or photoshop?) and how to integrate the sprites into a copy of FFT. Sorry for the n00biness and thanks for your help :D

most use paint or Graphics Gale, or GIMP.
http://www.ffhacktics.com/downloads.php
Download the bundle with the ShiShi Sprite Editor to insert/rip sprites from your iso.
Don't be afraid to make a thread postin' the sprite you're working on asking for pointers. We are usually around to crit.

Can someone please point me in the direction of a decent Male and female Holy/Divine KNight, or anything that would fit the general template of a paladin or holy knight like agrias. Please and thanks!

Hello people, well I'm trying to put one on my DK FFT, but I can not for the sprite in formation, I opened the Shishi, I was in DK, print screen, I took him aside, he converted to 8bpp bmp in GraphicsGale, only when I go for it in FFTEVGRP says, "is not a 16 color bitmap.

I did not save palette / import new palette, after all, the DK is already with the palette I want.

Why is giving this error? How can I fix it and insert the DK?

The DK I'm trying to place is attached.

Thanks.

Just make it a 4bpp bmp under all frames in Graphics Gale to ensure it cannot be any more than 16 colors.

I did, I simply export the sprite, open the paint, leaving size 24x40 edited and saved normally (oh she saved over the other bmp, which was already due 8bpp Shisha), then just converted to graphics and worked in 4bpp (:

thanks for help!

no mime is a job that is hardcoded, meaning you cant alter it without some pretty bad glitches. I used the mediator for my hk, mediators suck lol.

ok, but if i export it as a bmp using the latest shi shi, the colors of the portrait are still like that, and if i try to put it fftegrp to write it to the WLDFACE.bin it doesnt have the right colors :S...

also how would you recolor the arms? just use the existing palette and fill in the respective light/dark patchs?

EDIT: some reading took me to the right place! http://ffhacktics.com/tutorials.php?id=10

I've been looking all over this site trying to gather information and programs on what I should be doing. The more and more I mess around with things the more confused I get. I honestly have no idea what I'm doing anymore. I just wanted to make some custom sprites but now I'm just depressed with the whole situation. I don't know where to start anymore. I've been looking at different tutorials and videos and just plain messing around but I don't feel like I've learned anything at all. I'm so frustrated about this but I don't want to give up. This really means a lot to me. I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of key information or something... What am I doing wrong?

For the most part this seems to be a fairly simple head and pallette swap. Id recommend trying to finish it yourself, see what you can do. I'm sure many vanilla-based patches would be very willing to use them if they did get finished.

I've got a super idea, these threads you made should be posts in the Q and A thread
