(Dissatisfied with recently released games, that is)

I decided to do a little RPG research.

It would be most helpful if you simply put down your favorite RPG game of all time AND the latest satisfying RPG you've played.  If you know what subset each is ('pure', action, strategy) that's cool too.

If you're feeling rather 'talkative,' details about what makes for great RPGs would also be welcome, as well as lists of other great games.

In case you are curious about my motives, I'm trying to build my computer skills in fun ways, though I wouldn't expect a great game to come of this any time soon.  University teaching is way too slow.

The Lounge / What OS do you use? And Why?

I heard through the grapevine that anybody who knows anything about computers knows not to use a Windows OS.

Essentially, Linux is better and free and more user-friendly for anyone who wants to do more than "the basic stuff" on their computer.

And that Mac is just as good, but more expensive.


I figured this community was full of smart cookies, so I thought I'd drop by and get another perspective.  I am having a few frustrations with Windows myself, so I am considering a switch.

Then again, this man is currently frustrated over the discontinuation of Microsoft Money, and the fact that Microsoft keeps all information behind their programs in secret, so I figured he is very biased.

Help! / Downloading/Buying Japanese version of FFT?

I doubt anyone knows much about this, but I have been looking for the original version of FFT (which is in japanese) and have only succeeded in finding scam sites and the American/European versions.

So if anyone knows how I'd go about getting it, please let me know.  Still looking.

Edit: Oh, and one clarification.  I need to be able to get it onto my computer, so I don't think buying the disc version would work?

Help! / ePSXe plugins and getting it to run fast

Okay, so I need to use ePSXe to use the pec emulation codes, but I'm not used to this thing at all.  Thankfully I've got nearly everything running like I want it to.

But I can't get it to run faster than 60fps.  Quite frankly that's not anything too terribly bad, but I like to be able to speed through stuff.

Also, is there a particular sound plugin that's good for FFT?  The music sounds a little off on the one it comes with, so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for this.

Edit: Oh, and I tried toggling frame skipping/ no auto-detect frame rate but I think there's at least one other thing I need to toggle other than framerate at the video plugin.

1. Come up with an awesome idea. It can be vague, you'll fix that l8r.

2. Come up with a cool name.

2. Assemble your ideas by posting in a forum.

2. In the rare event that someone has a better idea than you, add that into the patch.

2. Find out what new game mechanics you might need, and plead to board members who will listen and start working on your patch.

2. Come up with the coolest ability ever, and give it to the main character.

4. Ask people to test your game.

5. Begin thinking of other stuff to make every class ridiculously awesome.

6. Add in more awesome stuff.

7. Try thinking up a new storyline.

7.5. Using all of the above information, assemble patch. You may need coders to help actually make the game run properly.

8. Scrap that idea, go to a different forum, repeat.


Tried, tested, true.  Trust me.

Old Project Ideas / Wiki compilation project

I had the sudden urge to organize everything on the site into the wiki so that people who are looking for information on what's going on, what has been done, and how to do things  will be able to find the information without having to search through posts and posts of random comments.

I am still going to read through just about everything on the forum, but I'd like to know what projects are being worked on still to for starters.  I know FFTv1.3 is going to get a section, but I'd like to know what other projects are still being worked on and, if you have run into a problem, what problem it is that has prevented you from working on the project.  This way, someone can say, "I wonder if someone is working on a crazy patch that makes no sense" and could go to the wiki and see something like:

Zodiac Crisis is a patch created by Lydyn.  Its theme was to make the gameplay as crazy as possible without removing its strategic elements. This project has been terminated due to a lack of interest. (Obviously more can be written about this with more detailed information).


And so forth.  I don't need this information right away, since there is plenty of other information that needs to be added to the wiki, but finding out and typing about the projects will be the most fun for me, so I wanted to get this part rolling early.

This is event skipper.  It doesn't skip most in-battle events, but it should cut out nearly every other event.

Hopefully I can now get it to actually SKIP events instead of cutting them out.

I'll post findings here too:

4301 - causes units in "Cadets" event to join silently.

1) choose your favorite color

2) give that color to the Chocobo

3) set Chocobo to Always: Critical

4) set Chocobo to move 1, jump 1

Does anyone know where the images shown at the end of each chapter are shown?  I have been modifying the speed so that the wall of text doesn't come up at an incredibly slow rate, but unfortunately it seems the amount of time before the background disappears is set by the background image!  This means that the event will only end once the text finishes showing AND once the background image goes away.  The end of chapter2 right now stays up at least a half minute after the text is finished.

I could just use a different image, but then it'll go away before its over so it looks ugly. I'm doing my best to fix up the game, but it just doesn't seem to be working.

Yup. I'm sure someone already figured this out but didn't tell anyone (or I just missed it).

If you can make the skill "Dash" do it, you can make Counter Tackle do it, except I'm pretty sure it will only activate on the enemy.
I need to test it more to make sure, but so far I've made the animation change...

Edit: lulz. I made it use the Dark Sword formula.  I don't know if it critical'd on the second time or what, but it caused knockback as well as MP absorption.

Edit2: Definitely was a critical hit.

Anyone done this yet? I was planning on removing the non-battle events completely (including events that happen right before or right after battles and the intro first battle).

Or I would fix the events so that times where there is just text on the screen it moves much faster, including patching up times where the text is extremely slow (like 'little money').  With this, I'd also fix the text that is unquestionably wrong like "Defeat Dycedarg's elder brother" but not "don't open that" unless a significant majority agrees on one fix.

I'm not really leaning either way yet, but I thought we needed a good event fix to go with the patches that "fix" game mechanics.

What is better: having Holy Sword work as it does right now or have Holy Sword use its Holy elemental by changing it so that it is not WP based?  Seems to me that by making holy sword skills use MA*Y formula would make it less broken.

Anyone else already done this?  Holy and Dark skills are not too common IIRC, though there really isn't an equivalent formula for Night Sword/Dark Sword.

So anyway, I had just woken up again (4:00pm) and got in my car to go to an appointment.  I was feeling kinda low until I put in my FFT Soundtrack CD and started listening to the music played in the opening FMV.  I don't think I've felt this euphoric all summer!

Ahhh. Good times.  Who here agrees that FFT Music is the best music and, if not, what is your favorite band/genre?

I always thought that if you needed extra JP or gil you'd do propositions.  I avoid random battles at all costs and I was wondering whether anyone has found out how to remove random battles or has a good idea on how to remove them.

The alternative would be just to make every battle have a level 1 unit that starts the battle dead, but that still gives 100 gil!  =o

Hey Zodiac, where did the list of event instructions that used to be posted on the main page go?  I was trying to fix one of the animations in the intro, but alas, I cannot figure out which one it is.

I've seen lots of people change specific classes or increase the amount of levels necessary for unlocking a class, but what about changing the job tree completely.  I was thinking "How does Thief have anything to do with Lancer?"

Of course, changing stuff just b/c it doesn't make sense isn't usually too valid.  But what about changing it so that you have more freedom near the beginning. Something like:

[Start] Squire
Lv3 Squire => Knight, Archer, Thief
Lv4 Squire => Monk
Lv3 Knight, Lv4 Monk => Geomancer
Lv4 Knight, Lv4 Archer => Lancer
Lv5 Monk, Lv4 Lancer => Samurai
Lv5 Thief, Lv4 Geomancer => Ninja
Lv4 Lancer, Lv4 Geomancer => Dancer

What this really translates into is:

Geomancer: Lv4 Squire, Lv3 Knight, Lv4 Monk
Lancer: Lv3 Squire, Lv4 Knight, Lv4 Archer
Samurai: Lv4 Sq, Lv4 Kn, Lv4 Ar, Lv5 Mk, Lv4 Ln
Ninja: Lv4 Sq, Lv3 Kn, Lv5 Th, Lv4 Mk, Lv4 Ge
Dancer: Lv4 Sq, Lv4 Kn, Lv4 Ar, Lv4 Mk, Lv4 Ge, Lv4 Ln

And likewise plan for magic class.  Would anyone object to playing a patch with such changes? Is it better/worse to change the job tree structure?  I figure Thief is too weak to be on the same level as Monk, and the only class it really fits with is Ninja.

Any sprites that you would like for us to use, post them (or a link to them) here and explain what it will be used for.

This topic is primarily to make sure we consider everyone's hard work. I heard someone wanted to replace the 3 generics, so yeah.

Also, if you have a new class you want to add you had better get a sprite for it because I'm not making any sprites. I'm no good at it.

So like, there are lots of skills in each of these, with lots of aspects in each. Dunno how you planned to tackle this (karsten), but I'll list the BIG changes I think need to be pointed out in each skillset. Or maybe just problems with some.


Basic Skill - I know it's the base class, but surely we can do better than this. Dash and Throw Stone need to be more stable if possible.
Battle Skill - equipment breakage ignores evasion, but can still miss
Charge - CTR = X+1 for Charge +X, except +7 is 7, +10 is 9, and +20 is 12
Punch Art - Spin Fist - 2v2; Repeating Fist - 1v2, 1...11*PA; Earth Slash - 5v2
Steal -
Elemental -
Jump -

Item -
White Magic - holy elemental, a bit weaker and high lv skills faster

Original version monsters were too weak, yet I had a few complaints about the FFT Sigma monster's new strength. Like every other aspect, let's try to make each monster useful be it early/easy access, good stats, superb movement, useful skills, versatility, etc.

Also, I believe that Blue Mage's skills should be discussed here. Monster availability has great effect on Blue Mage's skills.

Archives / Hacking Problems

Boco won't join as a guest even though I checked Save Formation. Checking Join After Event makes him join as a regular unit, yet not checking it makes him not join at all. What am I doing wrong?

I changed Boco's Skillset to an empty skillset, gave that set some abiliites, and now Boco  can 'class change' and 'learn abilities' like a regular human.
By 'class change' I mean he can change into a Chemist with a malfunctioning sprite and not go back or gain any jp as a Chemist.
By 'learn abilities' I mean open the abilities menu since he has no jp, nor can he gain any jp. What's setting him apart from the Byblos?

Also, in the Battle on the Bridge fight, Agrias's sprite malfunctions and her portrait is a miscolored gafgarion. Maybe this is linked with my faulty Boco who I added to the battle, but I had this problem before when adding characters to the battle formation.

I know how to rename stuff! What should Ramza's class be called? After Chapter1, he really shouldn't be called a squire. Also, what other names should be changed? I know Arc Knight is a popular title, but it's too prevalent.

And what about Malak's set. Rafa's is Truth, so maybe... Lies!

No one really likes seeing numbers after their skills right? Why use Teleport2 when you can use Warp? The English language is more diverse than that!

Spriting / Red Mage and Blue Mage sprites

If you know where any red mage or blue mage FFT sprites are, I could use some. I believe I can input the sprite if you have one in the correct format. Only way I know how to make a blue mage sprite is pixel by pixel. Don't forget that there is a different image for each action, so that's a great deal of pixel changing for me.

So anyway, I was testing my game, booting out Rad, Lavian, Alicia, and then it hit me. These guys are still useless!

What should I do with the unspecialized special units? Currently I have...

Rad - Red Mage (would be a new class)

Lavian - unlocked up to Geomancer

Alicia - unlocked up to Lancer

Boco - all Chocobo skills and can Fly, but has lower stats and 5 move (No other chocobo can fly anymore)
--[previously suggested Mbarrier, which is just too good]


Any other classes that you think should be added are welcome in this topic. Note however that my ability to add new skills is limited.
