Quote from: "CidIII"Holy shit this is the coolest shit I've ever seen.

StarCraft is Serious. Business. in Korea.  It's called their national sport for good reason.  :D

Any human watching this will come to two conclusions:

1. Nick Plott is the coolest guy ever
2. Susie is annoying and adds nothing to the show.

Like starcraft or gaming?  GOMTV has a yearly "Avertec Intell Classic" tournament.  The world's best Starcraft players fight against eachother.  Really neat stuff.  The matches are on their site too.  Check em out.

The highlight for me is the commentator, Nick "Tasteless" Plott who I think may in fact be the world's coolest man.

The Lounge / Other good games like FFT?
December 29, 2008, 02:48:00 am
I love me some FFT.  I've had some relative difficulty finding games like it though.

Other SRGs like Disgaea are okay, but they have very little in terms of character customization and job growth, which I think is some of the coolest aspects of FFT.  You can make them stronger by leveling them up, but you can't tun Laharl into anything other than... Laharl.

So are there other good SRPGS out there with a similar job system and ability customization?

So, I settled on a compromise idea.  I burn all of the ps isos to cds since I have dozens of extra blank cds lying around.  But when I want to play a PS game, I then extract the iso and then play from my HD.

:D

Quote from: "darthpaul"Just use the ISO as is.

Yeah, but having a bunch of them will take up a ton of gigs of HD space.  That's why I'd just burn them.  But if it hurts performace (eg. creates more lag) then I won't do it.

The Lounge / Playstation ISOs: Burn them?
December 25, 2008, 08:07:29 pm
Should I burn the Playstation Isos that I download?  The main thing for me is performance.  Is there more lag and loading times if you burn them?  And what is the best PS1 emulator?  I use PSX 1.13.

Thanks.

Quote from: "Vanya"Probably not, but it sure is nifty! I'm sure there are a few typos in there somewhere! ^_^

I was thinking more along the lines of overall feel and accuracy.  Like, for instance, was it intended in the original version for the characters to say "Tis" and "doth" a lot?

I was thinking about something like this as well.  I was thinking of giving everyone the item ability, but powering down items a lot.  There's a few ways that you can do this:

- Limited amount of items.  Either have a max of ten items each in-battle.  You can stock 99 or more of them outside of battle (so you don't have to keep buying more).
- Less useful.  Phoenix Down doesn't work 100% of the time.  Potions are half as effective.
- Chemists are the only ones who can use items as effectively as they are in regular FFT.  Learning item abilities (eg. Phoenix Down) allows you to use them normally.
- Chemists can have more than 10 items in battle.  How much, I'm not sure.
- Chemists can have a main skill like "Drink" or "mix" (like in FF5).

Doing this, Chemists could be a really powerful class.  But, they might outshine White Mages (who should be the main healers).  So they could be powered down even more.  Perhaps remove the double effectiveness of items?

Here's an overview of Chemists in various FF games to give you some ideas:

Question: Is the WOTL the best translation possible?

There are a few good things from the FFTA series.  I like that there are no random battles for instance and that you can see and avoid your enemies.

Question:

How much event and scenario editing can be done so far?  From what I've seen of a lot of other projects, it seems that they take the same story sequences, but change the dialogue and sprites around.  And you still fight in the same maps in the same order, on the same world map.

If so, then it might be best to work on finding out how to change these things, so that you can use the core engine of FFT, but make truly new games out of it.

And, it'd be nice to make truly new abilities, animations, as well as R, S and M abilities.

My idea of a fan-made PC pseudo-sequel to FFT is great.  However, it'd be insanely hard to pull off, since we'd have to work from the ground up.  There would have to be a ton of work put into it, and I think the technical skills required for it are above any of the people here.  So this approach is potentially the most rewarding, but also the most difficult.

Quote from: "KazeKasano"Ok... Does anyone have a clue how to get this even started?

Not really.  We'd have to go around FFT and gaming communities and try to recruit people with spare time and programming skills.  Which is why it might be nice to come up with some sort of project name, and make a forum on this board, as a kind of "homebase" for the time being.

If Rozenkreuzstilette and other doujin games can be made, which are parodies or "tributes" of other games, then a spiritual sequel of FFT can be made.

I think such a project would be needed since it's clear that Square will never make a real FFT sequel.  Just more Advance series drivel.

I suggest that this type of project should get it's own forum ^__^

Nicovideo would probably be the best spot (it's like a japanese youtube).  However, I wouldn't know what the proper search terms would be to search for them.

There's some stuff in the japanese version of FFT that never made it into the english version.  It mostly seems to be some mini-games, and some novels that you could read.  I checked youtube, but strangely, no one has played the japanese version and uploaded videos of this content.  Does anyone know where I can see what this stuff was?

From gamefaqs:

QuoteScore challenge mode (Japanese version)

Obtain the Book Of Life in Chapter two. Stop reading the book before reaching the "Good Ending". Then, read through the book again to access a hidden "Score Challenge mode". This mode allows the Chocobo Race sequence to be played for money.

The PSX is a nice system but it has a lot of limitations, and you can only go so far with hacking.  Creating a new engine to run just an FFT style game would be perfect.

It can have higher res graphics (but would keep the same basic style).

The battle system could be over-hauled too.  Remove the grid based maps for instance, and instead have movement/attacks, etc be based on spheres.

Keep all of the good FFT stuff of course.  Using the more balanced classes from 1.3 would be a nice start.

It could also open up the possibility for online play as well.  This would need some balancing.  Automatically making each team the same level might be a start.

If you change things enough, it could also be entirely legal.  Like RosenkreuzStilette, which is heavily inspired by Mega Man games.  Though, if this route is taken, then (sadly) all the distinctly FF stuff would have to be removed or renamed.
