Title: I put on my robe and wizard hat... (D&D Forum RP)
Post by: Celdia on October 31, 2011, 04:42:21 am
So the topic has come up in chat more than a few times now and I've found myself with more free time than I like while I'm at work, so I thought I might try my hand at a D&D game here on the forum. I also need some kind of break from working on just CCP all the time. Gotta have some variety.

Thing is, if I do have enough people interested in a game, it will have to be a different type of game than the conventional style you'd see if everyone sat at a table and was throwing dice about. This will hopefully be updated with some regular frequency and I would expect players to be able to keep up with that. If you don't frequent the forums all that much or aren't sure if you'll be able to devote some little bit of time to this every couple of days then I would ask you to refrain from signing up so that someone else with more time could play instead of everyone waiting around for turns to expire.

I'll be basing my game mostly on the 3.5 Edition rules but I'll be running fast and loose with them. I intend to borrow heavily from Raven's style of play from Curse of the Viper with the Battle Panes as well as the simplified character data. If you're looking for something more traditional then this game probably won't be to your liking. If you're looking for something a little different from the norm but still at least vaguely familiar, then read on.

I'm posting this here to gauge general interest and gather a few more players. I've already spoken with a few people about it and I have enough bodies for about half of a party so far. I will be putting up a more detailed post with some information about the game world (a homebrew campaign setting) I'll be using for the game later. What I really need to know, both from those of you interested and those of you already signed on for this, is what type of game you want to play? Do you want to do something combat-centric and mission-based like how Curse of the Viper was being run or do you want to do something more player-driven and sandbox style? At the table I'm more comfortable with the latter where I just form the world around my players and let them do as they will, adventuring and discovering the mysteries of the world as they go. That said, I can run a mission-based combat game if the demand for it is high enough. If there is another game style you would prefer, let me know what it is and I'll take it under consideration. For the few of you that actually follow these games but don't participate (I know there are some of you out there) feel free to voice your opinions as well as to what kind of game you'd like to see develop here.

I would love to join in.

And I prefer a less combat orientated game, and heavily set on story.

I personally would like to see a RP where the whole thing functions like a collaborative narrative.  This means that reducing units to stats should be avoided, and player consensus (or the DM) should determine what is OP (even if this may seem arbitrary to those used to D&D).

@FDC: I ran a game like that once. Had everyone build characters and then I took away all their character sheets and just used general descriptive terms for everything. It was...interesting to say the least, but very labor intensive for me since I was running all the numbers behind the screen instead of just processing player input. A collaborative narrative isn't a terrible idea but the success of it requires a group that will play as a cohesive unit and not all want to split off to the four corners of the map each doing their own thing.

Ryqo want to play! ^_^

Legends have been told for hundreds, nay, thousands of years of a mysterious old elven woman who faithfully follows adventurers wherever they may roam. Though she has never directly joined a party, she appears before them without warning, save a pleasant aroma surrounding her. Her voice sounds different to each individual and brings with it memories of one's grandma. Even those who have poor relationships or have never known their grandparents have claimed that happy "memories" filled their minds when the woman spoke.

For the paltry sum of a few silver, adventurers may enjoy a meal unparalleled by any they may have had before. If the party is willing to share stories of their antics, they will receive a healthy discount. And if the party's bard can weave the story into a song, why then, fine friends, you may partake what you desire free of charge. Regardless of the price paid, the delectable delights instils upon the parry several beneficial qualities that often prove invaluable as they press forward in their goals.

As she has a penchant for using berries in her creations, she has earned the title "Berry Mama." Indeed, her most famous dish is a berry infused custard known for its health restorative properties. However, despite the fame, it is a name she neither declines nor endorses. When asked her name, she merely smiles and either declines answer or says she has been known by many names over the years.

A party will know they have earned the Berry Mama's interest when a sweet sent of baking pies wafts over them. Sure enough, around the next corner or behind the next door, they will find a rickety old stand that appears to have been overgrown with grape vines and berry bushes. Despite this, Berry Mama cooks with an open flame and bakes in a stone hearth, neither of which have any effect on the surrounding foliage. She will greet the party warmly and invite them to view her wares, asking if they have stories to share.

Eye witness accounts have placed the Berry Mama in back allies, in small clearings, random roadsides, the heard of dungeons and even other planes of existence. She appears and disappears in the same curious manner, and never while directly observed. Even the leftover food disappears as soon as it is left unattended. She has never been seen engaged in combat, indeed she is largely ignored by creatures. This has lead many to believe she is some sort of spirit, apparition or vestige capable of summoning itself.

Whatever she is, the Berry Mama is always a welcome sight for any adventurer.

...right. Well, since it seems there is at least enough interest in some kind of game, I suppose I'll get started on a thread for it aside from this.

Feel free to keep posting ideas here. We'll reserve the other thread for the game itself and character data, etc.

Why so serious, Kalas?

Wanna know how I came to be on Sephyr? Well, you see, my father was hooked on thistletorch. Do you know what thistletorch does to a creature of the Plane of Fire? ... Of course you don't, you're not from the Plane of Fire, are you. You pro'ly don't even know what thistletorch is, much less how easily it can tear apart a happy family! ... Alright, fine, we were't all that happy. My mother was never home, she was always off selling herself to feed my father's thistletorch habits, so she couldn't stop what he did to me. By the burning depths of the ninth level, how I longed to escape from the horrors he bestowed upon me. Words fail to describe so I shall not try. Perhaps were I fluent in Abyssal, I could give it a go, but I digress. But as time wore on, I came to enjoy the suffering, even crave it at times. I'm crazy aren't I, go on say it! Say "You're crazy!" Say it or I'll... I'll... actually I'm not sure what I would do, but it would certainly be crazy... Alright, I'm bored now... I'm going to go find some pretty rocks for the critter.

The distance between genius and insanity is measured only by success.

Do you want to know how I came to be in Sephyr? I'll have you know I was born here. Yes, indeed, I am the daughter of a native Sephyrian sprite and an aspect of Hiran. I simply call myself a Lirai since it is easier for people to accept. But this plane has long since lost its appeal, so several centuries ago, I hitched a ride with a peculiar being known to many as the Berry Mama. Oh what fun we had, porting from place to place, and the stories we heard. I often would tag along with groups of adventurers for a while for fun, until we would encounter the Berry Mama again. Unfortunately, she had a particular attachment to Sephyr while I wanted out. So after a few decades, I left her to her own devices and sought out other means of extra-planar travel. At one point I found myself captured by a passive aggressive monstrosity that bestowed upon me a wand that cast portals with severe distance limitations. She forced me to traverse various labyrinths she had devised, but quickly grew frustrated as I was able to regularly fly to my objective instead of relying on the stupid wand. She teleported me out of her domain and into the infinite layers of the abyss where I became enslaved by a balor known as.... oh what was his name... ah yes, Lord Xyniixy, that's right. Ughn, the memories of the physical labor they forced me to do still sends shivers through my wings. Thankfully, some foolish mortals tried to invade his sanctum and I was able to escape through the portal they had used. Unfortunately, this lead me right back to Sephyr... yay... So here I am, stuck once again. I haven't seen Berry Mama in a while and I haven't heard any good rumors about other caster types capable of leaving this deity forsaken place. However, I did come across a few of Xyniixy's henchmen out looking to recapture me. I told them I wasn't the fey they were looking for, as I am perfectly fluent in Abyssal... and they believed me. I swear to Karla, the only way those lesser demons can raise their intelligence is to fly strait up... uhm... where was I going with this?

Until you shared ALL THE MAGIC with me.

Big adventure!
Tons of death!
A beautiful Cart,
Sturdy and strong.
Pulling ALL THE THINGS,

You have My Little Rhyhorn,
Do you know you're all probably my death?

Be your death? Wha? Why? I don't wanna kill my precious Rhyhorn!

I came to Sephyr just to be with my beloved animated rock! When Mr. Lejun came to the Plane of Fire to hire me, one of the first things he told me about was this amazing beast made out of sentient rock. I was sold on the spot and agreed to work for him. I just had to see you with my own eyes! And ya' know what? I wasn't disappointed! You're so cute, I can't stand it! I've seen a lot of things in my time, like those other sentient rock guys... uhm... Goliaths or whatnot, but you're way more awesome than them. We should like, carve some holes in yer hide and embed some gems and other cool things, you know, like the Goliaths do, that's make you look even more awesome. I'm thinking a few sapphires and some emeralds would suit you nicely. Of course some onyx inlay wouldn't be out of place either... hrm... I'm going to have to think more on this...

Just so there isn't any interruption to the game thread now that its finally proceeding cohesively, and also because I am still getting reuqests on this, I'll be taking any new player applications over here. Gonna copy/paste the other Waiting List characters over to here as well just so they're all in one place.

-Name: Thanatos Exeros
-Gender/Sex: Male
-Race: Alynthi Elf
-Age (Human Equivalent): 22
-Birth Place: Alynthia
-Appearance/Clothing: A light chainmail shimmers black under his heavy black shawl, draping down to the small of his powerful back. His legs coated in the same shimmering chainmail, strong and sturdy as tree trucks. This behemoth of an elf has undergone significantly tougher training than the average warrior, and has additionally learned to strengthen himself using magic.
-History/Background/Motivation/Goals: A son of a powerful warrior, he aspired to become like his dad. However, his father went to war, and is still in the military, fighting to keep Alynthia safe. So, his father was not there when he graduated top of his fighting class. Nor was he there for when Thanatos left home, searching for a greater good.
He was never there, and it burns in Thanatos' mind everytime he's reminded.
-Combat Style: He relies purely on his dual scythes, twirling in an endless dance to wreak havoc, known as Death by some, and Living Hurricane by others, he has earned much infamy for his unique style of fighting. His wears a chainmail threaded into nodes on his chest in order to keep it from flailing about. Prefers complete domination over stealthy tactics.
-Religious Affiliation (if any): Atheist, however he will gladly worship to avoid insulting anybody. He enjoys studying religion for its philosophical points.

-Name:       Maximilian Haynes

-Gender/Sex:    Male

-Race:       Human

-Age:       28

-Birth Place:    Fandaria

-Appearance:   Bearing shoulder-length kept blonde hair and wearing the most exquisite of clothing, Maximilian takes great
pride in his appearance, often wearing Fandaria's noble colors of red and gold. Bearing light blue eyes,
they are known to turn a deep black when his blood pressure rises.

-History:    A highborn born and raised in south Fandaria, Maximilian serves as a mediator between the ever-growing tensions
between Highland and Fandaria to prevent a possible war. Despite this, he holds no love for either nation,
desiring Fandaria to take Highland as its own. To this end, he schemes on a way to manipulate the war
so that Fandaria may absorb the weakened nations as its own. Trained in both the ways of the crossbow and the
spoken word, Maximilian does not hesitate to manipulate and threaten those who stand in his way.

-Combat Style:   Maximilian's skill with words extends to combat, where he can initiate parley, threaten foes, and arise a variety
of emotions in those who listen to his words. When the enemy lets their guard down, he puts an end to his foe's

- Name: Awduin Lariat

- Gender: Male

- Race: Human

- Age: 24

- Birth Place: Verun

- Appearance: With short, spiked, black hair, Awduin likes to take care of his style, he wears an over-all too. Pants and boots complete his appearance. On the chest he wears a commom shirt and under it a light Dragon Scale armor, that is realy strong against physical attacks, that is a legacy from his father along with the emerald necklace he wears that was his mother legacy.

- History: A commoner by birth, his mother served as a maid in the palace of Vormir for 20 years and his father worked as a blacksmith. His mother was a good friend of the Queen, that is kind and gentle, so is the king too, they are like his second family. As for his father work, Awduin learned to handle almost every type of melee and ranged weapon that his father crafted for the palace. One night bandits raid the palace when the troops were out to war, they were so many, so Awduin help the few guards left behind to defend the palace. His father died while trying to protect his mother, and his mother was kidnapped taken by the bandits, as he saw this he was knocked out by one of the bandits that ran with what they looted. Now Awduin is raised in the palace by the Queen and King themselves and has a good realation with their daughter Celina. He seeks to go on a quest to find the whereabouts of his mother as she may still be alive. While the opportunity does not appear, he trains with the guards in the castle.

- Combat Style: Awduin know both melee and ranged combat styles, but he specializes himself in melee combat wielding either a long sword and a shield or two long swords. He is very tactical, so he plans all his moves before entering in a battle, try to come up with the better strategy possible, and only then he engages his opponents, but he make all this plans in just seconds due to his hard training.

- Religion: Daedalean

Quote from: Lydyn
-Name: Virkum
-Gender/Sex: Male
-Race: Alynthi Elf
-Age (Human Equivalent): Equivalent of age 22 in human years
-Birth Place: Unknown
-Appearance/Clothing-
[pictures]
-History/Background/Motivation/Goals-
Virkum lives to fight, he lives for the battle, but no one but the gods above know why. It has been two years since he's awoken in a peaceful field with nothing but the clothes on his back and the ancient longsword beside him. It has been two years filled with bloodshed, coin for his services, and endless wanderings. Where he learned his skills, his abilities over his own body, and where he acquired such a potentially powerful blade is lost in the fog of forgotten memories. He is quiet and keeps to himself, but it's hard to take a step in any town or city without being recognized, let alone noticed. He's built a decent reputation for himself, but he only knows one things and it's the only thing that keeps him going - he must fight. For what? He hopes he'll find that answer someday.

-Combat Style: Tends to wear clothing with very little leather in select areas (still counting as clothing). While Virkum almost exclusively wields Starfang into battle, he is more than capable to battle without any weapons at all. He seems more agile than should be normally impossible and has almost inhuman reactions paired with the ability to stand toe-to-toe with a knight in full armor while wearing little more than clothing. He is known to throw Starfang in battle as a substitute long ranged weapon.
-Religious Affiliation (if any): Unknown

-Name:  N'zla of Ro'K (UN-zzzl-ah | roh-Kuh)

-Gender/Sex: Lesser Male

-Race: Ek, highly intelligent bug people. Picture (http://i796.photobucket.com/albums/yy242/lynnific/male_and_female_ek.png)

-Age (Human Equivalent): 27

-Birth Place:  Hive Ro'K, Underdark

-Appearance/Clothing: Sketch (http://i796.photobucket.com/albums/yy242/lynnific/nzla_of_rok.png)
Predominantly lime green.  N'zla's shell is embossed in the Ek tradition with swirls and dots, the embossed sections are painted red and pink.  N'zla wears the traditional Ak Priest headdress made of scaled blackened chitin.  The headdress is topped with a carved statuette on the front between his antenna of an Ek in a meditation position.  The headdress leads into a thick collar with hundreds of bright feathers (a sign of wealth as feathers are a rare and treasured commodity in the Ek Hives).  He wears more blackened chitin scales as armor over his torso and abdomen.

-History/Background/Motivation/Goals:
N'zla was raised as a priest of Holy Ak in the Ek Hives of Underdark.  His people are strict pacifists, and like them he has a tendency to be naive.  But also as most Ek have, N'zla bears a great curiosity for the Above.  He wishes to understand the Above and its peoples, to know what they know and to bring secrets back to Ro'K.

As most priests of Ak, N'zla is also well-versed in Mok-T'raat, or "War Games", a ritual that honors the time long ago when Ek still fought like beasts until they were saved by their patron, Ak.  Mok-T'raat is merely a strategy game, a mimicry of ancient feuds, and N'zla has no idea how to actually fight.

He's far better with the Tongues of the humanoid races than many of his peers.  He has spent years practicing to mimic the sounds humanoid mouths make.  Even so, his speech is broken and awkward at best.

-Combat Style: Pacifist.

-Religious Affiliation:  Ak, God of the Forgotten, Secrets, and Knowledge.

Six armor bracers
Five golden rings
Four locked boxes
Three Rupees
Two sharp axes
And a platinum stack high enough for kings.

On the tenth day of looting
The cart held ALL THE THINGS:
Ten pristine diamonds
Nine scrolls of scrying
Eight spheres mysterious
Seven wands of shatter
Six armor bracers
Five golden rings
Four locked boxes
Three Rupees
Two sharp axes
And a platinum stack high enough for kings.

On the eleventh day of looting
The cart held ALL THE THINGS:
Eleven works of fine art
Ten pristine diamonds
Nine scrolls of scrying
Eight spheres mysterious
Seven wands of shatter
Six armor bracers
Five golden rings
Four locked boxes
Three Rupees
Two sharp axes
And a platinum stack high enough for kings.

On the twelfth day of looting
The cart held ALL THE THINGS:
Twelve bolts enchanted
Eleven works of fine art
Ten pristine diamonds
Nine scrolls of scrying
Eight spheres mysterious
Seven wands of shatter
Six armor bracers
Five golden rings
Four locked boxes
Three Rupees
Two sharp axes
And a platinum stack high enough for kings.

I shan't deny that I considered this before the current version. However, while the syllables align better on paper, the stresses do not. After singing it to myself, then asking several coworkers to do the same, it was concluded that the natural tendency was to stretch 'fit' and double up 'for a' for whatever reason. I could not for the life of me get gold to work, even using words like 'ransom' instead of 'stack' as well as several others. After a brief survey, we decided that using the current version and doubling up several syllables is the 'least awkward' of the lot. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm still uncomfortable with it, and I do intend to change it should I figure out a phrase whose stresses work better, but for now, it will take a back burner to the other songs I'm destroying... I mean 're-writing'... In this light, I do wish to rephrase or change outright, "eleven works of fine art" for the same awkwardness of stresses, even though the number of syllables is the same. This is also why I chose "bolts enchanted" over "enchanted bolts," the stresses feel better.
/end rant...
I'm happy to accept criticism though, as it often sheds new light on my work.

I'm more worried about the fact you got coworkers to sing a bastardized Christmas song about a wooden cart...

Found washed up on a river shore one day by a traveling merchant, and taken to a temple, to be doctored by a Priest. But, when upon awaking, it was found that the kid remembered nothing; Name, Past, Family, Friends, Birth Date, Brith Place, ... were all unknown. The Priest "encourged" the Merchant (with a mighty fine bill) to take Delta with him, and teach the kid of life at the exchange of the bill fines being wiped. This Merchant would soon to be known as Bae.

To Bae's surprise, the kid he took under his wing, turned out to be a shapeshifter, and a powerful psion. In awe of the amazing shifting feat the kid posed, he dubbed the kid Delta. Delta was a fast re/learner, and it wasn't long before Delta was able to help Bae work. the Two spent years to come working as merchants together.
Twelve years they spent together. It all ended when an assassin took his life, with a sadistic blade. He said last three words to Delta, that from this day linger in Delta's head, haunting, reminding, "Love.. You.... Delta...." He opened his hand reveiling a letter, and sighed with his last breath. Delta, after crying until no more tears came. Following the instructions on the letter, Delta took Bae's pocket watch, their money, the horse, the cart, everything they worked so hard for. Delta set him a flame, watching until his body was reduced to ashes. Hanging head low, Delta began walking headed somewhere, anywhere but there.

Delta's main goal is to regain losts memories, while presurving the memory of Bae.

-Combat Style: Delta uses Psionic Powers to get an advantage in battle.
-Religious Affiliation: Delta is in love with religion and sees all gods as a different form of the main one.
Although she is mostly devoted to the gods: Bahamut and Odinn.

If Hogarth dies...

If Hogarth lives...
-Name: Rex Lazuli
-Gender/Sex: Male
-Race: Alynthi Elf
-Age (Human Equivalent): 19
-Birth Place: Alynthia
-Appearance/Clothing: A rather slender warrior--yet a strong one. He dons himself with a purely-for-aesthetics captain's uniform. It's blue with gold trims. He wields with him a single sword he has named Lazuli. As does all swordmages, he has bonded with his blade, and on some level, become emotional about it. His only emotional moment. He has sleek black hair which was once held together in a very profession form, but now in a more jovial appearance. Underneath his clothing, his skin is branded and scarred countless times with runes of magic. His eyes, in fact, have their own runes which glow bright when gathering or releasing magical power, which is essentially all the time.
-History/Background/Motivation/Goals: This man has been trained by the best and brightest in the academy of the elite, of the brave and magically inclined. The Swordmage Academy. He was always rivals with one student named Rellia, fighting fiercely for the valedictorian. In the final days of the fifth year of training (out of eight years) Rex had lost the title. Before then, they had both been considered valedictorian. They attempted to settle it with duels, with tie-breaker tests, with teacher created tests of ability, and even with real life tests of tactics or battle ability in different situations, but no matter what happened, they almost always came out as a tie. Then, they dueled. For the first time ever, it was not a tie, and somehow, Rellia had learned something Rex did not. Normally, Rex and Rellia would both stay and practice at the academy over times of student release, however that year Rellia had gone outside to train.
Rex then concluded that the academy has offered all that it could to him, so he then decided to quit the academy and become a traveler.
He was never there, and it burns in Thanatos' mind everytime he's reminded.
-Combat Style: This swordmage strikes quickly and relentlessly, while able to take a decent amount of damage, he tries not to.
In order to attempt getting an edge over Rellia, which she thought of the same thing, he trained in the offensive and restoration arts as well.
-Religious Affiliation (if any): Atheist, and will gladly tell you your religion is stupid.
