Title: The Chronicles of Kanbabrif
Post by: Bastard Poetry on May 17, 2008, 07:20:29 am
The way I see it, the Chronicles wouldn't even be possible without the tools and guidance of the FFH community.

So I'm going to start a topic about it!

Check it out:

ALL GLORY TO KANBABRIF!!

Post by: LastingDawn on May 17, 2008, 11:58:11 am
Speaking of Kanbabrif... work on my custom patch is going pretty steady, it's quite a story, without giving away many details, Zalbag feels Alma is unsafe in Lesalia and marries her off to... Kanbabrif. Thus making Kanbabrif and Ramza brother in laws. (Despite how I make it sound it's actually a pretty small part of the story) Of course I would need your permission to use Kanbabrif, in this manner. Also, when the time comes, may I ask you to give text for Kanbabrif's lines?

EDIT: Wow, a site! Hehe, That intro looked pretty amazing. Did you make those graphics yourself? I know a few somewhat looked like FF7 burning town and FFT's opening cutscene, of course I could be wrong.

Bastard you certainly have a touch and some flare that comes off very nicely. By that I mean "Very well done". I'm very impressed by how you were able to cut all those different into pieces together to look like a cohesive scene. Oh and I dig credit spots hehe.

Re: LastingDawn

A Kanbabrif.. PATCH!? Hell yeah, I'd give you permission! (Not that I really think anyone'd need my permission for anything, but I do appreciate the sentiment). As far as helping to write the dialogue, I'd be more than happy to help out with that. Just give me some time to finish some of these videos. Then, when I get a chance, we can collaborate. Just let me know what you need!

Also, your question about the clips reminded me of those two sacred little words: copyright infringement. So I quickly threw together a list of sources to add to the description fields of both the youtube and the Vimeo displays.

"I did not make the FMVs. I intended to put the sources in the ending credits. For copyright reasons, though, I'll list them here. There are clips from the following:

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Intelligent Systems)
The Mind's Eye (Thomas Dolby)
Age of Conan: Frost Swamp (Funcom)
Prince Charming (frogs created by Jason Carswell; Guru Animation Studios)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (Activision)
Final Fantasy II Anniversary Ed. PSP (Square Enix)"

Ass: saved.

Most of the Chronicles will be in-game footage, and I only plan to occasionally use fmv clips like that.

Re: Cheetah
Thanks! I have a soft spot for the overly dramatic. But don't let the tone of that video fool you.. most of the Chronicles will be funny; the serious, epic drama will be interspersed sporadically, for the balance.

****SPOILERS****

On that note, I was planning to have philsov be the main character. The one who has to stand up against Kanbabrif throughout the series. He gets "transported" to Ivalice a la FFTA sorcery. I was going to use your blue option of the red mage sprite, because that hat is so utterly pimpin'. But my only concern is that it looks too.. Ivalicean, if that makes sense. Since philsov is from our world, perhaps he needs to look like he doesn't belong?

Does anyone have any thoughts on how philsov should look?

I do like the Red Mage's blue palette as well. Well I would definitely suggest a battle sprite with lots of animations, seeing as how he is the main character. You can always just explain it away with one of those famous Hollywood dialog inserts Philsov: "Oh my gosh, where am I? Everything looks so strange and foreign. WTF am I wearing!? I look like the ridiculously overpowered illegitimate child of a Blue Mage and a Red Mage." Or something far more witty then that.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on May 22, 2008, 09:01:40 pm
Ha ha ha! I like that, but I ended up using Vanya's FF Warrior (blue) for Philsov, and your Red Mage sprite for FuhFuhFresh (blue) and Piercewise (red).

Also, I've reached a significant hurdle in my attempts to put Ramza's buttpants onto a generic male monk. (Long story.. but Fanatic inspired me when he requested his character). The hurdle is this: I can do it, but it's going to take awhile. And the time I spend working on that is time spent NOT working on these videos, which people have been waiting a long time for already.

So would anyone here be up to the challenge? If not, I'll take it up after I finish Part I and plan on a significant wait time before Part II.

Also, Kuraudo Sutoraifu: Where art thou, gangster!?

Because I'm doing these new videos in HD, our original plan of working together in the production department isn't going to work. File sizes are way too big and fragmented to worry about sharing/corresponding. However, it'd still be good to hear from you, man!

Oh, and check out the homepage again. There's a new picture of the entire cast (excluding guest appearance characters) for Parts I-III, using some of the unique sprites you guys created here.

www.museofoblivion.com/kwrathindex.html (http://www.museofoblivion.com/kwrathindex.html)

Again, if anyone else would like to have their sprites featured in the Chronicles, I'd be more than happy to accept your offer to let me use them!

Wow, very nice arrangement, I am rather ashamed to say it took me quite some time to actually understand the arrangement, until I realized it should be read diagnolly not up and down or plain left and right.

Title:

Haha that was freaking awesome. Really freaking long, but really freaking awesome. Great use of music and the FMV were tastefully done as before. You do a great job of giving credit, and that is really cool.

You probably aren't going to make changes to this one but I have a few suggestions for the next chapter.

1) Maybe having a little more motion during dialog sequences. Either by changing the camera angle every once in a while or even having them do their walking in place animations for periods of time. This is probably difficult because of all the excess text boxes that appear, but there might be ways around that. If you are having static pictures for most of it anyways, then you should be able to add in more "animations" by just pasting individual actions into part of the overall picture (I hope that makes sense). It seemed like you did some of this, but more movement would be cool even if it is just waving an arm every once in a while for dialog sequences. The other idea I had is that maybe you could make all the dialog windows and stuff transparent by editing the graphics and text for them. This would be a little tricky to do, and very hard to tell what you were doing, but probably at least somewhat possible.

2) For the Misty sprite it looked like her animations were a little wonky. I can't really tell for sure, but this might be caused by having her placed over the wrong incorrect "type" of sprite (as in Type1 and Type2). Like if you put a squire on the dancer sprite, it would look all wonky.

3) If you wanted your characters to be more individual, it would be cool to have them with some custom portraits. Even minor tweaks to the Monk portraits would have been cool for Junk and Fantastic. I have been playing around with portraits a lot lately so this is something I would be happy to do. In addition you could even think about having different emotions for the Portraits to match their speech. Maybe not as professional looking, but more amusing. Grandy is kind of new here and has done some funny stuff with that.

4) Oh and if you didn't know Zodiac is working on some tools to edit Events, which could give you a whole new way to do these.

Sorry that my feedback is longer than my praise, I'm just trying to spark some new ideas. Part one was freaking awesome though and I'm looking forward to your next release and hearing from you on ways I could contribute.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 12, 2008, 07:39:45 am
Your constructive criticism is VERY welcome with me.

1) I definitely agree with you on this aspect, and I did experiment with ways of pulling some of these ideas while it was in production. Unfortunately, the amount of work required to add movement and such multiplied the already-epic amounts of work required just to make the video the way it ended up. That last sentence came out odd, but I think you know what I mean. The other problem I found is that having the Height number displayed, as well as the "AT" over the head of whoever's turn it is at any given moment, and any number of other little things that could pop up like that would have made it look messy. So I went with the stiff and lifeless arrangement because it at least looked clean. Ha ha ha!
However, I am going to continue trying to find ways to add life to the scenes, because I wholeheartedly agree that they need it. The walking in place thing is out, but I could play around with facial expressions and more body movements.

2) I was supposed to use the Misty sprite in the F Squire space, but I chose to use the F Mime space instead. This decision was made, primarily, because I plan on doing a Puppeteer Challenge soon, and I wanted the Misty sprite for my female mime. However, now that you mention it, I do see the glitchiness in the video. For the next installment, I'll revert back to Squire! She plays a more active role in the next part.

3) Facial expressions would be great! Although, I should point out 2 things: 1) Fanatic specifically asked that his character be a normal-looking monk.. (except he did want Ramza's buttpants, if possible). 2) I didn't originally intend for Junk to be such a significant player in the story. He was only supposed to have a few lines at Grog Hill and then fade into obscurity in later scenes. But I was sleep deprived the night I wrote the Grog Hill scene, and I was having fun with his lines.. then it grew from there, to the point where he quickly became my favorite character. (I was actually emotionally conflicted about killing him off! It was rough!) Anyways, that's why he's kinda boring as well.

4) I'm taking a short break before getting back to work on Part II. In the meantime, I'll start catching up on all of the developments I've missed around here. I want to really start implementing things like spells and such too.

Because of the sheer amounts of work required to make these videos, I would GREATLY appreciate any help you could provide with portraits and such, or anything else you think might help.  Same goes for anyone else reading this.

I'm really glad you guys enjoyed it so much! This video was an utter blast to make, and I have a feeling that Part II will be even better.

Well I will look into a few of my ideas further to see how they develop. Is there a location on your site where you are discussing character design and portrait adjustments so that I could be part of these discussions?
Title:
Post by: Asmo X on June 12, 2008, 10:07:38 am
Also, you should have maybe established some of the characters a little more. It's like you jumped straight into act 2. Look into the 3-act structure and I think you'll get a lot more value out of your characters. More Hamwich!

Anyway, I don't know whether that stuff is a bit too "serious business" for this project but I thought i'd put it out there.

:( I really want to watch it but I suppose my only wait to completely download it would be during night... I haven't found a single site that allows me to save the video on my computer, what a pain.

Calculated around 5h of download. My connection automatically breaks after exactly 6:00:43; fucking ISP.

And of course no fucking video site out there supports resume download.

Incredible!! Thirty minutes long FFT Fan works cannot possibly go wrong! Regardless of whether there is a bit of a "serious tone" I think it really fits the plot. Also the cameo's everyone makes is absolutely adorable. The music is fitting on each part, and the FMV's are all highly fitting, wow, Part I changed a ton from the beta preview you showed! I for one cannot wait to see some character development on Bishop Kanbabrif! Also why the various fellows serve him, a very interesting twist, keep up the beyond excellent work! I am certainly highly looking forward to Part II!

Asmo, I made strong efforts not to use too many inside jokes in this, because I wanted it to appeal to a larger audience. But I think that's one of the bigger inside jokes.

Witchhammer (Hamwitch) was the troll who got this whole thing started. Most of the Kanbabrif fans know the whole story behind it, so I didn't need to introduce him. However, you're right. If you didn't know the background on that, it would seem like a pretty fast leap into it.

Here, this is copy-pasta from the description of my first youtube video of the series:

"In an effort to put a Gamefaqs troll in his place, I made this poorly-shooped slideshow to explain to him exactly why Kanbabrif was a better character than Reis, in the hopes that he would shut up about her. "She's teh only character who can do 4000 damage, she's strong and powerful magicks" and blah blah blah. In a word or three, I showed him.

Turned out, the others of the FFT board loved it, and they wanted more K-wrath and Starry Frog."

I do appreciate the perspective. Part II is going to be introducing a LOT of new characters, so I'll keep that in mind.

Zodiac, that sucks. If you know of any other way I could help get the video to you, let me know.

Saw the rest of the thing this morning, fricken awesome.

I'm not exactly sure how you're gonna use that memory card...

but, why Junk, Whhyyyyyy!?

 :P

Graphics 8/10
I'm giving a perfect score to the new spells.
=D At the jumping frog at Reis.
What makes the score that lower though is how each unit walks one after each other basically how always a single thing happens at a time.
Whoever don't blame yourself, the tools for that aren't out yet, and Hex editing all that would we tons of trouble.
And the FMV choice was excellent as well. Especially the introduction; wow.

Overall I'm fucking impressed, I was seriously expecting way less comparing to your previous videos, you really worked your ass out this time.

SUCCESS!

Well I'm not sure anyone was even understanding what I was trying to do but hopefully you will understand the importance of it to this project. Basically what I have done is found where all the graphics for the cursers, text, and backgrounds for all the menu related stuff during battle are, and then I made them all transparent. The screen shot below is of Ramza with his actions menu open.

Notice the complete lack of anything. First you think, well what is the point of this I can't tell what the hell I'm doing. But this means that for BastardPoetry's videos, he wont have to cut away or freeze the action every time he wants to take a new action. Of course you have to have what you are doing completely memorized, but I think that is a small price to pay. There are only a few issues, but what I'm showing you now took me about 30 minutes to put together so I'm sure we can figure out the other problems.

Either way I attached the edited FRAME.BIN, file that goes in the "Event" folder of the cd image. Just import this one in over the old using CDmage and you can have invisible pretty menus too.

Even the damage, "AT", and skill name dissappear. Though there could be some work arounds like, just getting rid of the "AT" but leaving everything else.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on June 13, 2008, 01:14:10 pm
Excellent work, Cheetah! This has quite a myriad of uses! I am glad to see that editing Frame.bin went so smoothly.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 13, 2008, 01:24:03 pm
Well Melonhead's ShiShiSpriteEditor is a useful tool. It would have the potential to be a very powerful editing tool for more areas of FFT if another version was made  to deal with a wider variety of files, sense most of them use roughly the same format. Though how I have it working now I think I could edit anything contained in FRAME.BIN

Title:

No no no, I didn't modify any code. I was just giving a subtle hint hint about how ShiShi could easily be modified by the creator to do a lot more.
Title:

i have no doubt that it could even be used to modify the images stored within effect files as well if configured to decompress them the right way.

Keep up the good work.  :D
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 14, 2008, 12:50:59 am
Cheetah, you rock my freakin' socks off, man!

egrest, about the video quality.. That was the "VHS quality" version, because it was the one that won the race for uploading to Vimeo. There's now a High Def version, which is much clearer. (However, it takes longer to load, and it's highly recommended you let it load completely before you start watching it).

EDIT: The HD version is now the default version

Unless if you meant the quality of the video in terms of events, such as the choppiness between dialogue and actions (like what Zodiac described). In which case, we're working on improving that for the next episode.

Thanks for the feedback, though!

Oh, and Zodiac, you will especially appreciate what I plan on doing with the whole memory card sub-plot thing.

As for Hamwitch's constant yammering and Junk's constant "Bludgeo'ding," the former was meant to be annoying, in keeping true to the character, and the latter was meant to be memorable, by means of repetition. It's become quite the popular phrase recently, so I like to think I succeeded in my intentions.

I'm currently doing some spring cleaning, both around the house and on my computer--which is a complete mess of shoop'd images and video clips now. Basically, I'm taking a short break before delving into Part II. However, I've already started jotting down notes, and I will deliver a full character lineup to you sometime within the next few days, Cheetah.

I still need to spend some time reading everything there is to read around here.. I feel so behind on the advancements you guys have made in the last few months or so!

Very exciting stuff. You have definitely earned a breather haha. I will really look forward to those character descriptions BastardPoetry. I actually spent a lot of time today working on some new portraits.

Make sure you take a look at Gomtuu's Map Viewer. You could probably get some cool and unique shots of the battlefields using that.

Just got back from five days in the Appalachians, which was a great trip and all but for the continually mounting anticipation leading up to finally getting to watch your video.  That said, the wait was totally worth it.

awesomefreakingawesome

The biggest praise I have is that in only a few minutes' time you got me to care so much for a common named secondary generic character, that I was genuinely bummed when he met his end.  That's got to be some sort of speed record for a tear-jerking heroic sacrifice.  And now I'm really tempted to describe something as "for hammer" the next time I'm in a fitting conversation.

This is a prime piece of FFT fandom, and I hope it breaks out to a reasonably wide audience.  Looking forward to seeing my likely ill-fated Dorminid in the next installment, but definitely enjoy the break!

CAST OF PART II

Kanbabrif (Kanbabrif sprite, durr)
Bastard Poetry (black/crimson thief)
Brazen Hussy (misty sprite)
Chaumel (see attachment)
Voldemort (see attachment)
Philsov (blue version of Warrior sprite)
Fanatic (buttpants?)
FuhFuhFresh (blue version of Red Mage sprite)
Dukki Boi (see attachment)
Dorminid (see attachment)
Olan (He's a freakin' Duke now. Maybe he needs some new threads?)

And, as it was before, a few guest appearances that I will decide as I go along.

I've attached bitmap files for the characters that could use some portrait work, Cheetah. If you need any others, let me know. As it currently stands, BP the generic thief has a fairly unique portrait (darker skin tones), and Fanatic seems fine with the generic monk portrait. Although, if you're feeling really ambitious, I suppose you could make his a little more unique. I noticed your work on Vanya's Warrior sprite, so Philsov might get a little makeover already! Dorminid volunteered to be a female character, because he didn't want the Chronicles to turn into a sausage-fest, but insisted on being an archer. So feel free to jazz that one up if you want.

Let's see.. what else? I haven't had a chance to play with the new toy you made me, but I'm about to do that next. I DID get a chance to read through gomtuu's map-viewer topic. That stuff is AMAZING.. but I'm not too sure how much use I'll be able to get out of it now.

I seem to recall a topic around here where Zozma or someone was playing with spell-hacking.. Hmm. I'll have to look into that more.

My guy's the pwn, also, /nitpick I have slightly lighter hair color than that. but any lighter would look strange on that sprite if my artist's eye isn't failing me

Kletian's  portrait is almost as handsome as I am IRL

also I see I have a critical standing animation?

NO WAY!!! :o
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on June 16, 2008, 11:03:48 pm
Hmm, DukkiBoi's sprite is very ornate, especially for a Knight, you bring out a lot of virbant colors which makes him look very flamboyant and pompous, of course this is only through sprite, I have no idea how the fellow actually is. Also chaumel's an interesting case, if it weren't for the Izlude head I'd say the green clothes and black armor make him look very reminiscent of a little Velius somehow.

Oh so exciting. I will look over this stuff soon.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 17, 2008, 01:21:14 am
LastingDawn, one thing you should know is that these characters were chosen over on the Gamefaqs board, in my Chronicles topic. Users picked their job class and colors, and I made the adjustments based on what they asked for. Sometimes, if they didn't specify a job, I gave them a unique sprite (such as FuhFuhFresh - Blue version of Red Mage), and sometimes I made decisions based on what I've already planned to do with the story.

But yeah, Dukki Boi picked yellow and orange, and I thought it was a strange combination to pick. But it ended up looking pretty cool in the end.

Visit my homepage to see the whole cast:

www.museofoblivion.com/kwrathindex.html (http://www.museofoblivion.com/kwrathindex.html)

Alakran also ended up looking much, much cooler than I expected! The Pieke Okata sprite is just a stand-in for that picture, and not the one that'll end up being used.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 17, 2008, 01:26:36 am
Voldemort,

I don't think you have a standing critical.. You shouldn't, anyway, because all I did was alter the colors of Kletian's sprite. I didn't re-draw anything.

However, I will adjust the hair color slightly. That's no trouble at all.

And one last thing: I will try to work in a little bit of pwnage for your character, but you have to know that Kanbabrif does all of the severe pwnage in this story. Most of our user-named characters would REALLY hate to have their character killed off by anyone but K-Wrath. This goes for my character as well.

But don't worry, we minions will get the chance to do some damage..
Title:
Post by: Archael on June 17, 2008, 01:37:34 am
The standing critical animation was a joke; I was referring to my sprite having a critical animation at all; as in, why would I EVER go into critical?

LUDICROUS.

And yes I am fully aware of Kbob pwnage, I never asked for more action from my guy or anyone else.  :D
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 17, 2008, 01:41:32 am
I knew I was forgetting someone..

DakHam will also be in Part II. He's one of three Oracles, so the portraits will be shared, and thus tricky to individualize.

The other two Oracles will be in Part III--Alakran and Shotgunnova.
Kajitaini Eizan and Pieke Okata will also be introduced in Part III.

Although things may change as I go along.

I have seen you before. You did, afterall, throw in a drunken vlog amidst the WotG videos, as well as a manly challenge to YTWatchdog towards the end. (By the way, 4girlsfingerpaint is worse than both of those combined. And swap.avi lords over all, as far as disgusting goes).

Portrait Test. I think this is for the Bastard Poetry theif sprite. Are the colors good? How do you want the face and hair changed?
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 19, 2008, 02:50:48 am
I should have slightly darker skin (I messed up and accidentally gave my character really pale skin in the Part I video).

And I'm thinking that the reds should be darker too, but only because I'm making a lot of colors darker and/or brighter for this project. (Did you notice how much different Reis looked?)

Also, I did spend quite a bit of time playing with that transparent-screen setup. For dialogue scenes, I think it will come in handy. For battles, however, things get much too complicated. I need the character info, menus and damage numbers back.

However, I plan on having three versions of the FRAME file, so that I can switch them out for whatever I'm doing: HIDE ALL for dialogue, HIDE SOME for battles and HIDE NONE for when I eventually put everything back in order to play the game normally (if ever).
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 19, 2008, 04:13:46 am
Skin color should be easy, though I haven't looked at the color reduction yet. Any other specific facial features or hair styles you want adjusted? I can work on getting a darker shade of red for the portrait.

Though I will give you a warning about messing with darkness and lightness too much (and no this isn't some lame star wars joke), contrast and color balance is a delicate thing and it can go very badly. But I wont limit your artistic vision, just know that what can look great on it's own can look like a jagged sparkle mess when compared to other sprites or especially the maps.

Any idea what you want for the "Hide Some" frame file? I'm glad you are finding it useful.

Whose portrait should I start on after Bastard Poetry?

This guy still looks so wicked. Kuraudo, if you just changed his helmet a little so he didn't look so much like Gaff it would be a great Shrine/Mystic/Advanced Knight class sprite.

I have an alternate helm for him, but I don't have all the angles.  I made it for a guy on Heroes of Ivalice.

K-Suto,

Great work! I can't wait to see him with that helmet!

Cheetah,

The facial features and hair are fine, actually. It looks quite a bit like me already.

As for the FRAME file, I'd like to have the menus and damage numbers back. Like I said, the battles are quite a bit more complicated now. Also, since I'm getting the hang of Tactext now, I've got things like Kanbabrif's job class changed to "Villian," and that'd be good to show off.

I like not having the height number and "AT"s though.

For the next character you work on: I'm doing a scene with Dukki Boi, FuhFuhFresh, DakHam and Dorminid soon. One thing to keep in mind though: I create the scenes in Photoshop, and then I throw the images into WMM. Later, if I need to change something, I alter the photoshop image, and it automatically updates in WMM too. So don't feel too rushed on these. (My goal is to have Part II finished by July 15th at the latest.. so sometime before then is good).

Lastly, was Zozma still working on the young boy sprite? Because I'm going to include Orinas into the story.
Title:

I'm getting ahead of myself here, but what I'm about to ask for would require quite a bit of time, and I'd need it for Part III (so I'd need it in a month). I wonder if anyone is up to the challenge..?

Full, working sprites for Bolmna and Blansh.

It's a lot to ask for, but if someone out there would be able to make them, I'd shower them with praise and chocolates and teddy bears and more praise.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on June 21, 2008, 03:01:38 am
you could use orlandu or karsten's body for blansh's sprite since he has a similar cape... just throwing it out there...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on June 21, 2008, 04:53:42 pm
Blansch, hmm? I'm at a loss for Bolmna, since the only thing that even seems to deal with him is a portrait and a beta sprite, which some insists is a little girl with pigtails.  But for Blansch... there is a half completed beta sprite inside of Rudvich's file...

He is an interesting looking character and a slight change of hair color could make him a convincing Blansch. He is also for the most part complete. He does need a bit of initial work, such as replacing all of the Rudvich at the beginning of the sprite and adding arm animations, other then that he's complete and ready to go.

well i was working on bariten and rudvic's incompleted sprites for a short time trying to make them more complete, really rudvic is only missing his arms
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on June 21, 2008, 05:04:07 pm
Ah! If you could finish that Barinten sprite, that would be absolutely wonderful! Barinten's role is a bit more... active in Mercenaries, I had almost had to abandon the idea, but I am glad to see that you are working on such!

Also the work on Rudvich is very impressive, I never thought that could be Rudvich, but your recolorings make it look very convincing.

Here is a small present for those who want to work on the council member sprites. Plus a peek at Kanabrif's original sprite.

Sorry but none of the palettes are the ones they actually used, I just chose ones that looked pretty good. If people really want these with the original palettes I could go through and hopefully find them, I'm just not ready to do that right now.

Hopefully someone will find these useful.

hmm, can't promise anything, but i'll give Bolmna a try; i'll just rework an existing sprite with a similar head and get all the arms working right.... i hope.

just wanted to put this out there, but this is the first draft of my sprite Corban.

i saw that balthier looked enough like him, so i used it as a base, but i need to rework his clothes to look more like armor (or maybe i dont since he's a bandit...who knows?), which you can see, since his man-purse is now leg plating (for both sides). got some more to do on it though...
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 23, 2008, 08:50:04 pm
Corban looks bad-ass! I'd love to see the final product, so good luck with that!

And thanks for taking up the Bolmna sprite task. He'll play a significant role in Part III. By the way, your moogle sprite is definitely shaping up to be an interesting character in Part II already!

Thanks again for all of your assistance guys! This will save me so much time later on--which is critical at this point since I have school and a wedding coming up in a couple of months. My goal is to try and get Parts II and III done before then!

Hey Cheetah,

If it's no trouble, please make all of the portraits 64x96, just like the portraits we use here. It'll make things easier for me if everything is the same size.

And I didn't know if this would help you out at all, since you probably already have everything you need, but I've attached a PNG with all of the portraits of the entire cast of Part II. These are what I'm working with right now. Then, any time you post a replacement, I'll go through all of my dialogue images and replace the ones I used with the updated portraits.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 24, 2008, 03:15:56 am
Oh, by the way, when I was talking about brighter contrasts and such, this is what I had in mind.

I wanted to make everything more vivid (the battlefields and everything would be brighter too). The only problem is that I would need to figure out how to make my emulator displays brighter like that, because I'd want in-game footage to match.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 24, 2008, 02:54:54 pm
Here is a preview of Dokki Boi for your feedback. It is hard to make that yellow and orange working in the portrait.

As for posting my final portraits by making them 64X96 and putting them into that template, that should be no problem. I will just post a copy of that pretty soon, and then just update the pic in the original post. While still posting small previews of individual portraits and saying when I updated the main template.

I have a few questions. Do you want the portraits blown up so they are kind of blurred and smoothed like the BastardPoetry thief, or exact pixel blow ups like the monk in your template. The exact pixel blow ups look kind of jagged, but are clearer. My suggestion would be to do the exact pixel blow ups because I think they will end up looking better in a greater variety of situations. But like you were saying earlier it will be easy to adjust this stuff at anytime so I guess you can experiement with both styles. I will just post a copy of both types for now I think.

The other question I have is more like advice and I decided to sleep on it and have a fresh look at it before I passed it along. I'm still not sure about how you are trying to make the colors look more vivid. I just find messing with contrasts and hues rather dangerous. But like I said it is your project and I don't want to mess with your artistic vision, and I could definitely be mistaken and it could look great. I would just suggest that you get some feedback on this from others.

Oh and any thoughts on how you want the female archer character to look?
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 24, 2008, 08:41:33 pm
I think the exact pixel blowups are going to work better, but I am still experimenting with it. Most of the portraits I have were taken from this site, and they're all like that. So if anything, it's more cohesive. But we'll see. Mainly, I need to play around with the video formats, to see how they look in HD compared to the battlefields.

Dukki Boi looks good so far.

As far as the contrasts go, I didn't have any luck figuring out a way to make the emulator display brighter anyways, so I'll stick with the normal contrasts for now. If everything were brighter like that, it'd look more vivid and unique. Kind of like Sin City or 300. (I'm not a huge fan of the movies, but I did really like the visual asthetics).

Title:
Post by: Kamikaze_Ice on June 24, 2008, 09:14:47 pm
you say you want more "vivid" colors?
you also mentioned that you're using an emulator, so i'll assume your using one that uses PSEmuPro plugins (ePSXe and the like).

so to fix your color issue, try using some OGL2 shaders!
Guest, from Pete's message board has made a few shaders and stuck them in an archive file for easy use.
http://guest.50megs.com/ (http://guest.50megs.com/) is where he has his download for the pack.

and for an easy way to tell what some shaders do, you can use this site which has some image comparisons.
http://emukim.wordpress.com/ps-shader/ (http://emukim.wordpress.com/ps-shader/)

not all shaders at that site are in Guest's shader pack.

it's also pretty easy to adjust one of the current shaders to give you more 'vivid' colors. just open and edit with notepad or whatever and away you go.

i personally use the 1.0 Daisy AA shader at level 4, with no texture filtering and no high-res textures. the Daisy variants have slightly deeper blacks, and slightly more vivid colors. (think the FULL or LIMITED HDMI color option on the PS3 to give you a good example)

i'm pretty sure you can change shaders "on the fly" if you use the PsxEven emu. then for certan scenes you could switch back and forth from different shaders. like for example, a black and white or sepia flashback type setting thing.

ps - i'm sure you can just do a quick search on GLSL shaders to find more, or information on how to adjust specific settings.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 25, 2008, 02:42:30 am
Thanks, Kamikaze!

The AA Daisy not only brightens things up a bit, but it seems to make some of my usual glitches stop glitching as well! Although, it doesn't quite make everything AS bright as I was envisioning.. but now that I'm looking at the game in motion like this, I think a little bit goes a long way. Things just look slicker and more vivid, without being overdone. Cheetah, I think this will work wonders, as far as happy mediums are concerned! It's not too dramatic, but it's enough to make things slightly more vivid than the average FFT video. Exactly what I wanted!

I may play around with some of these other plugins when I get a chance, but I'm already quite happy with Daisy for now. I'll post some pics or a video when I get a chance, just so you guys can see the difference.

Kamikaze, you've just landed yourself a spot in the credits, as well as this "Guest" fellow for creating the shader. Rock on!

Cheetah,

I hadn't really given much thought to how Dorminid should look. Basically, he's a nice young fellow who volunteered to be a female character because the series is lacking in estrogen. So make him SEXY!

Also, how did you edit the FRAME file?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 26, 2008, 06:26:46 pm
Can Dorminid just be the female Blue Mage I'm working on? Check out the "Female Sprites" topic in the sprites forum.

Editing the FRAME.BIN file was a bit tricky and not all that precise. Export the FRAME image as a BMP, open it in Graphics Gale to start. Now what I did is I just blacked out everything, making everything transparent, and then just in the Palette window of Graphics Gale made like 10 rows all solid black (each row of of 16 colors represents a palette option). Then I just opened up FRAME.BIN in ShiShiSpriteEditor and imported the saved FRAME.BMP over it and placed it in the game.

Now that was easy. Getting rid of specific stuff is going to be harder because you are going to need to know the palette of the file (everything color used by any of that stuff). Then you just black out the thing you know longer want and black out the palette colors that it uses. This is still probably all doable because I do have some idea of what the palette for the file looks right. But it will still be a little tough and could easily be messed up.

Title:
Post by: Dormin Jake on June 27, 2008, 03:05:11 am
It's totally up to BP and what he's already decided for my character, but for what it's worth, I definitely wouldn't mind if Dorminid were a Blue Mage.  One of my favorite classes, that.  Only thing is I originally envisioned her (him? me?) to be fairly mundane and painfully ordinary.  Someone who wallows in the depths of self-deprecation, as I am often wont to do, so Blue Mage might be a bit too flashy?  I dunno, up to BP.

As for portraiture, see my avatar for my clearly defined and overtly feminine facial features.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 27, 2008, 04:08:42 am
Dormin, I had actually wanted to make your character the female Blue Mage from the start, but went the archer route per your wishes.

Seriously, man, that sprite is fantastic. I know you don't want fantastic, but these videos are showing off the great accomplishments of the FFH community, so let's go for it!

Voldemort,
I adore Heliopolis. That, and Moongate, and Quasar Waves.. those ones with the sort of middle-eastern/far-eastern sitar action.. All great stuff! A lot of old-school Samael fans complain about their recent work, because it's too "technoish," but I think it's all great.

The only stuff of theirs I'm not too fond of are the first two albums. But everything from Ceremony of Opposites to Solar Soul is brilliant. ESPECIALLY ETERNAL!

You, sir, are definitely winning. You might also want to check out the band Rotting Christ. They have a similar sound to Samael. Not AS good, but damned decent.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 27, 2008, 04:21:37 am
Okay then lets just use the standard Blue Mage Portrait for Dormin/"Dormina". It is a pretty cool portrait so it should work out. I will post a rework of your portrait template soonish with those that I have completed so far.

I might have to check out some of those bands. I have a long night shift ahead of me and music is the only thing that keeps me awake. Well that and the fact that I brought my laptop tonight to work on sprite :O.

By the way, the reason I put 3 Therion links is because the first one.. is just too fucking cool! I didn't realize there were live videos out of their full symphony concert, so now I'm watching as many of them as I can find. The second link is a better example of what they sound like normally (non-live). Plus, that warcraft footage will really come in handy for my videos later..

And the third one, Kali Yuga, is a song that I may end up using for one of the most epic battles in the Chronicles, later down the road. I haven't decided yet, but it is one of my all-time favorite songs evar.

Definitely pretty good stuff. It is a little too...(wow it is the middle of the night and adjectives are getting hard) epic/instrumental/orchestra/opera-like for my tastes. But it is still good and I'm enjoying it so far.

PS: That Infected Mushrooms song is freaking sweet though, definitely my favorite song on this list thus far.

Ah, good. Landed the 'shroom on ya, I see. (That's why I threw out multiple genres, because I didn't know what you'd like).

Infected Mushroom - Becoming Insane (Full Version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqHTHUhSOls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqHTHUhSOls)

Infected Mushroom - Muse Breaks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R5rDB6zuFQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R5rDB6zuFQ)

Becoming Insane is from their most recent album, "Vicious Delicious." The first 5 tracks of the album are fantastic, and then the second half is kinda weak.

Muse Breaks is from the album, "I'm the Supervisor." That whole god damned album is SICK! Before I decided to keep techno away from the Chronicles, I was thinking about using the track called "Frog Machine" from that album for.. well.. a frog.. machine.

Good that will work perfectly then. Thanks for taking one for the team Dormin haha.

Voldemort: I'm giving your portrait some thought now. My original though was to recolor Izlude's portrait, seeing as how that seems to match your hair style best. However I have decided that that portrait isn't the best looking. So I'm looking for your input on hair color and style.

Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 30, 2008, 06:57:01 pm
I don't think Bastard cares either way, as long as it matches pretty well with the sprite. Plus if we used Izlude heavily as a base we would probably change the sprite to match, real easy.

So I guess my problem is that Izlude portrait is too good of a fit and i guess there isn't much for me to do haha. Well do you want facial hair or a cool scar or something. I would think the point would be more to match your tastes than make it look like you (in my opinion at least).

PS: Ahh just noticed that someone else has Izludes portrait, well it will work either way I'm sure.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on June 30, 2008, 08:17:15 pm
Ahem.. hey.. Cheetah.

Chaumel has Izlude's portrait and sprite.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but he did request Izlude long before anyone else requested anything about anything. I mean, he's not around much these days, but he and I did a LOT of brainstorming together before I even announced the idea of this re-make project to the gamefaqs boards, let alone the auritech boards.

I know you're also planning on making his portrait unique too, but if Voldemort's takes up all of Izlude's features, then it leaves Chaumel with the features of someone else. Then I'd feel like I screwed him over if I didn't interject, you know?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on June 30, 2008, 08:31:05 pm
Yeah I hadn't originally realized that Izlude was already taken, I don't want to be screwying with anything so I will figure it out. I would rather attempt to make them all look original and cool rather than make them look like actual people anyways. So I will keep brainstorming with Voldemort for his portrait.

I know you already already had Fanatic as a generic monk in part one, mind if I change him up for part two and any particular requests? Oh yeah and don't think I forgot about those buttpants.
Title:

The Goland Milkbar was a milk-plus mesto, and you may, O my brother, have forgotten what these mestos were like things changing so skorry these days and everybody very quick to forget, bar rumours not being heard much neither. Well, what they sold there was milk plus something else. They had no license for selling liquor, but there was no law yet against prodding some of the new veshches which they would put into the old moloko, so you could peet it with vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom or one or two other veshches which would give you a nice quiet horrorshow fifteen minutes admiring Ajora And All His Zodiac Braves in your left shoe with lights bursting all over your mozg. Or you could peet it with knives in it, as we use to say, and this would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of dirty twenty-to-one, and that was what we were peeting this evening I'm starting off the story with.

heh. nice. Been years since I read it but I still understand it all. You should make a character talk like that.

Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 01, 2008, 04:07:33 am
You know, I might just do that. I have a tendency to be extremely sleep deprived when I write some of my scenes. (See: The Villian of Ivalice, Grog Hill scene).

It's been about ten years since I last read it. I had to google-copypasta this time, but I used to have that opening paragraph memorized. As well as the entire nadsat dictionary.

Good times!

Cheetah,

Fanatic mentioned the unique monk portrait from the battle to save Cloud. Except I think that particular portrait looks like a mean dude, which kinda goes against his character.

Otherwise, he said,
"maybe add a few days of beard stubble. Who has time to shave when you're running from Kanbabrif? [and where would a monk get a knife anyway. I mean, the guys don't even carry hats!]"

Dukki Boi asked for "darker browney hair."

If it's not too much trouble :)
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 03, 2008, 01:08:08 pm
I'm liking the ideas for Fanatic. Making the evil Monk look good will be easy, it is exactly what I did for your portrait. Dukki Boi having brown hair would be kind of touch though. Totally possible, but then his armor or whatever would have to be brown too because they use lots of the same colors. I will see what I can do though since I might finally have some time to work on this stuff today.

In the meantime, perhaps everyone should check out the 3-minute Intro video for Part II.

Cutscenes and more cutscens! Bah! You tease us! Hehe, in any case the preview (as is in normal PSX trailer fashion only showing the cutscene) does leave a lot of anticipation for the next installment. How far along is it currently?

How far along is it currently?

Not as far as I would like, unfortunately. We had a lot of stuff come up at work lately, and I was falling a little behind on wedding plans. So this last week was devoted to catching up on everything. Now, my schedule's a little clearer, and I'm tackling some production hurdles.

Here's what I'm looking at right now:

EDIT: Spoilers removed because I solved that problem.

Question for you guys: Do we have any control over weather in the game yet?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 03, 2008, 11:01:02 pm
I would recommend reading the Maps Viewer thread by Gomtuu about weather effects. I believe it is in the Hacking or Ripped data sections. He spent a lot of time working with the maps and what not so he is the guy to talk to. Do note that he found a way to change what maps an event or battle takes place on, even some that are never used in battle.

Who cares how long the battle sequences are as long as they are sweet!

Oh and I found an easy way to double size the portraits I am doing (obviously from my preview) so I will post an update of your portrait template before I leave for the holiday weekend.

Okay so I spent so much time on your portrait Voldemort, I was just having an impossible time finding ways to make your sprite look original and still be a shrine night. But here is what I have so far, tell me which hair color you like more. Obviously I still want lots of imput on how I can make it look better. Or maybe this design isn't working for you and I have to go back to the drawing board.

I fixed the sprites half hidden right eye so he doesn't look like such a barbarian, though his eyebrows could still kill a man. I will probably do some recoloring of the armor as well. Any other suggestions?

How about silver/iron armor for Voldemort instead of gold/bronze?
Title:
Post by: Archael on July 04, 2008, 03:01:08 am
Also, Cheetah

I think back to the drawing board on that  Voldemort preview, dude

http://auritech.fantopolis.com/files/cast_213.png (http://auritech.fantopolis.com/files/cast_213.png)

^ In this picture I linked, you see Izlude's portrait? his face is slanted forward, just like in this preview

now look at Kletian's avatar, how his face and jawline are straight

that's how mine should be

the hair isnt bad, perhaps a bit longer too not so tidy
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 04, 2008, 01:04:35 pm
Hmm well I guess he needs more touchups if you think the head is slanted, because he is definitely looking straight forward. But there are some reasons that might give the illusion that he is looking down. I'm also not sure the incline of the head is very crucial either way. Then again you could just be pulling my leg on this

I can definitely make the hair look less tiddy though. You need to choose a hair color though, otherwise I'm doing double work editing both versions.
Title:
Post by: Archael on July 04, 2008, 01:23:00 pm
I'm not pulling your leg

he looks way too goody-two-shoes and not evil enough

he needs to look more pissed off

he's a Kbob minion!

also just give him brown hair and be done with it.. a la kletian

brown hair, pissed off, square jaw

and u got it

also is it possible to keep gold armor + black robes? or does that conflict with someone else's look?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 04, 2008, 01:54:22 pm
As far as I can tell the other Shrine Knight Kanbabrif minion has the same color scheme as you, but I'm not positive. It matters little though, the sprites are done and it might be cool that you match. So it can stay gold armor + black robes. Evil looking is easy and a square jaw should be doable.
Title:

Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 07, 2008, 05:38:53 am
I've figured out a solution to the weather, but it will require doing a quick playthrough of the game and establishing numerous save points--for easy access to certain storyline battles and, of course, random battles with different weather effects. (Things that the Debug menu can't help me with. Plus, with the wonders of ENTD editing, I'll have more control over units on the battlefields). Anyways, that shouldn't take too long.. because I can just blaze through the storyline battles with Kanbabrif. (That'll be fun, crazy and SADISTIC BROKEN!) Perhaps I'll upload a video or two to show off the brighter colors.  :D

Duke Olan: I'm thinking Olan's head on Dycedarg's body with some color changes. Opinions?

Part II Oracle: I'm thinking I will give him somekind of facial hair, but beyond that I don't know. I think that will do for now and the other Oracles can expect more additions.

Little Boy: No portrait changes. Do we have all the sprite animations that are needed?

Philsov: I need to make him look a lot cool since he is one of the main characters.

Okay so here are my ideas for Fanatic and Duke Olan. I'm not sure about the color for Olan's wrap yet, I'm definitely looking for input on his color scheme. Does the angle of his head look okay?

For Fanatic I was trying for a darker more brooding look. The guy just lost all his comrades and his buddy Junk, I'm willing to bet he is a bit affected by that. So I based him off my Solid Snake portrait and then had him cover up a bit more with some darker clothing. I think the changes were still minor enough that nothing needs to be done to his sprite though.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 07, 2008, 07:16:43 pm
I'm not too sure about the little boy sprite, but I think it's finished enough for him to walk around and stand around and talk around and such. Fine enough for Orinas, at any rate.

I like the portrait for Olan well enough. It's kinda bland, but he doesn't really have a WHOLE lot to do in this one anyways.. I don't know. Maybe he needs some royal colors instead of the white? Just to spruce him up a bit?

I absolutely LOVE the idea for Fanatic! Especially since his Part II scenes take place in snowy places, it would make sense that he would wrap up a bit more than usual. And I like the black thing. He won't go hardcore emo in Part II (so don't worry guys), but a little something to show he's in mourning for his friends.. It's perfect!

Lastly, I will trust your judgements with Philsov. Your work is phenomenal, man!
Title:

I'm glad you like the Fanatic portrait. I liked his character in Part I and though he needed some spicing up.

Duke Olan definitely is just a starting point. Your comments gave me an idea that I hope will pan out though. What were the colors of the army that he use to be a member of?

Another thing for you, Cheetah. The map I'm using for Olan's scene inside Zeltennia castle (the one where Orlandu said "Soon there will be real war" or whatever) has a giant red drape/crest thing on the wall, with a black lion.

Red and black. There we go! Too bad this all takes place after the Lion War.. I'll have to smudge that lion out or something..

Quote from: "bastardpoetry"Red and black. There we go! Too bad this all takes place after the Lion War.. I'll have to smudge that lion out or something..
I doubt that after the war Lesalia's and Zeltennia's respective lions would cease to exist.  They're the seals for those particular regions, no?  If Olan is duke of Zeltennia, I would think he'd still use the black lion motif, unless I'm wrong and the lions belonged specifically to Larg and Goltanna.

Regardless of whether Olan still uses a lion insignia or not, perhaps he's an antique enthusiast and decides to keep his old liege lord's stuff (including flag!), you know, for old times' sake?  I doubt Olan would be the iconoclastic type to smudge out all traces of his duchy's rich history.

Have you tested him and everything?

Bad news, guys: This project isn't anywhere NEAR as complete as I'd have liked it to have been by now. I mean.. single-percentage completion. So I'll try to get more work done over the weekend, to catch up. What I'm saying is that there's absolutely NO WAY this will be finished by the 15th-20th. What else does Dakham need here? He just seems a bit bland to me. I don't think it would be horrible to leave it like this, but I wish to brain storm ways to spice it up a bit. As it is now someone would have to look closely to notice that it is even different from the original Oracle.

The Philsov portrait I just posted was just a thought, I don't think it has been a matter of much discussion thus far. I need to fix up his hair a bit more and do something about that neck scarf. Currently it makes him look like he is wearing a space suit  :P

Thanks for the complements though, I appreciate the imput.

My newest thought on Dakham is to add some whisps of hair coming down the back of his hair. Not so that he has like long hair, just so that it has a bit of length. Minor enough that nothing would have to be done to the sprite. But no other portrait really has that.
Title:
Post by: Archael on July 12, 2008, 09:16:51 pm

Anyway, great work on that sprite.. it's one of my favorite cok sprites so far
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 12, 2008, 09:36:54 pm
Okay, I'm back.

Yeah, "space suit" was kinda sorta along the lines of what I was going to say for constructive criticism, but I didn't know how to describe it until now. Plus, I had to leave to meet some people for dinner and didn't have time to try and figure out what it was that was bugging me. In fact, I was so pressed for time that I couldn't even explain WHY I was pressed for time, so I thought "grandma on fire" would suffice for the time being. Not that it matters much. Really, what's important here is that my favorite restaurant now serves Guinness from the tap and in pint glasses. Very important, that.

Philsov looks great as a starter. A little touchup work to his clothes and.. Well, I don't know. His hair kinda looks like a choir boy cut. I'm only saying that because I just had a haircut myself recently, and I'm still mad that she ended up giving me what could only be described as a "choir boy" haircut. That sort of "bowl-shaped" thing. But, it does look much better on Philly than it does me, so I don't know.

His face, however, definitely looks great! Especially considering that he and Fanatic are slowly going to look less and less cheerful as the series progresses.

Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 12, 2008, 10:09:37 pm
Yeah his scarf/neck looks weird because the original colors were very dark and thus much of it was black. I have spent little time on that portrait and I'm now at work, so there is still plenty of work to be done on him. Do you think I should work on making the scard look better, give him more neck, or whatever I think looks best?

If you don't like the hair that is a problem and there is little I can do for that. There are some more minor adjustments I will be making to it, but the hair style will be the same. I will add the blue to the other "warrior" portrait I have done so that we have some choices. Obviously Philsov is one of the main characters so I want him looking really good so lets get this right.

Oh oh i so totally know what is wrong with Dakham the oracle. He looks bald because his sideburns aren't dark enough. Okay that will at least make him a bit better. It is amazing what stepping away from your work for a while and then coming back to it can do to improve things. Same thing with Philsov, totally didn't see the space suit till I looked at it again 5 hours later on a different computer.

Triple post GOO!

Voldemort:
Okay so hopefully this will be your final choice. I basically just tried to make the guy on the left look as badass as I could in 15 minutes. But I thought it might be too much so I included an alternate just pissed version too. I can do a little mix-matching of elements, to get it just right.

Hopefully people recognize those as scars.

the only difference between the left and right (besides scars) is the hair, right?

or am I missing something?

I like both of them. but I don't know where the scars are from??

where are they from? I don't remember my guy getting cut in part 1

I think go with the one on the left (but no scars).

EDIT #5: shit now I don't know.. the scars look kinda cool

and I bet he is going to be a little bitch to the good guys in part 2...

Oh you are a lucky man LastingDawn. If your input hadn't been so good I would have totally owned you for ruining my precious triple post.

Glad you like the hair, it balances him out well too. An earing is a great idea. Accessories are hard to do (as in I haven't even ever tried...), but I think it might be worth a go so I will see what i can come up with.

Ok. Go with the scars. You worked your ass off to make him look mean like I asked and you did a great job. he is now truly an evil Kbob minion

One on the LEFT!

Final answer!  :D

Also, when you are done with it, can I get a finished copy to use as my avatar on here?

Great work, the Cheetah!

I think the earring will be very cool.

My only criticism about Voldemort's is that he looks too much like Vormav. I know that's the base you worked from, but casual viewers may not pay enough attention to notice that it's a guy named Voldemort and NOT Vormav. (At least, the few people in my life who have watched Part I with me never seemed to pay much attention). So people will be all like WTF VORMAV A LIFE NOW!?

The scars were a good touch though. Voldemort's the kind of bad ass who, before being recruited by K-gunz, used to pick fights with cats.

It's good to be back (I was here before?)

So, anyway, hope you get the next episode up soon. I look forward to it. Although it will be nothing without Junk (176 damage, lest we forget).

I wish I were in the chronicles. But my post count isn't high enough yet.

I'll be back after 100 threads in the spam forum.

You could end up with a character in the series, woodbatman.

You just need to raise your post count like a fucking jerk, the way Voldemort does! Then you'll be in in NO TIME!  :P

Seriously, though, I may actually NEED more characters for Part II afterall. Dorminid and DakHam don't make for a very threatening posse on their own.

Wouldn't you agree, the Cheetah?

I think I played the first 5 minutes of the game once, and had to stop to take care of something else. (Probably some stupid fucking customers, since the people who came into my father's video store had no respect for my gameplaying/popcorn eating work habits).

Then I got busy and never bothered to try the game again. Anyways, are you talking about the woodenbandman sprite that you mentioned on the Custom Sprite board?
Title:
Post by: woodenbandman on July 14, 2008, 11:28:44 pm
Yeah. I would like that to be my sprite.

Although I might edit it further to give it my hair. Imagine female knight hair on that body.

Alright, Woodenbatman, I've gotta run to take care of some things right now. (WTF? EVERY god damned time I finally get online and start chatting with someone lately, something comes up! Voldemort can tell you guys.. It was a 3-day struggle to finally get 10 minutes to communicate recently). But I'll think about a character for you, and we'll see what the Cheetah has to say on the matter. (He's co-producer around here, since he does the Cast work).

brb, explosion.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 15, 2008, 12:50:07 am
Disappearing Ninjas are cool.

Vormav is definitely the base and he definitely still looks like him. I made him younger looking, more angry, scarred, extra armor, minus some hair, plus some hair, and a different cowl color but he still looks a little too much like Vormav I totally agree. The easiest fix might be to change the hair color, but I have some other ideas that I'm going to try first.

I was thinking about making Voldemort a bit more mauled and missing an ear, but I thought that would be taking things too far lol.

Your current avatar already has a strong possibility of making it into the game Woodenbandman. What part did that character even play, and did he have a name? If you want to be in it is totally possible though. It is just a matter of when and how much participation. At this point we are happy to use people's names and take character requests. Just be aware that you will likely have a quick and dishonorable death. Though do note that is what Junk started out as I believe.
Title:

How much more work do you still have to do on your sprite, WBM?

If it's close enough to being finished, I could include you in Part II. My plan was to start filming scenes tonight, and the FIRST scene would require your character. So I'll just start working on scene 2 tonight instead.. but the sooner you could finish your sprite, the better.

Not to pressure you or anything, but PRESSURE PRESSURE PRESSURE!!!

Seriously, though, if you'd rather take your time with it, I could make room for you in Part III instead. But it would be great if we could add a few more characters in the beginning, if their sprites are already finished. In fact, why am I still typing this paragraph? Here goes:

NOW ACCEPTING 3 SIDEKICK HERO CHARACTERS FOR PART II

- Minor characters with very little dialogue (maybe? I don't know. Junk was only supposed to have 2 lines, so you never know how I'll feel while writing a scene).

- Must have a completed unique sprite of your own OR you can settle for a generic with a basic color swap. (I just don't have the time to keep waiting for more characters to be made, and the Cheetah doesn't need any more work dumped on him).

- You COULD be killed off, depending on how whimsical I'm feeling.

- You MUST have your request in ASAP, because filming has already begun!

- You cannot be a character who DIED during the course of FFT's storyline. Seriously, the CoK is supposed to be like a sequel.

- No Zodiac.

Whoah. Just saw your post, Cheetah.

We said similar things!!  :P

Here's the deal, WBatman: If your character is young, like the sprite you're working on, then he'd be perfect for Part II.

If your character is old, like your human-Elidibs avatar, then he'd be ABSOLUTELY perfect for Part III.

na don't maul him anymre

the scar is enough

kbob's minions are rough enough to be scarred but never weak enough to get MAULED. keep that in mind

also the little change in the hair on the left one goes a LONG way in looking less that vormav

the angles of the face and hair is what looks like vormav in the first place

Dear god I've finally found this thread!!!

Anyway, my portrait looks pretty damn kick-ass. I especially like the hair.

To add some spice, maybe make the white shirt line higher? I'm thinking that it should reach farther up toward the neck.

And if this is possible, could you extend the brown shoulder-portruding things out to make them taller and larger? Again, only if it's not too much trouble.

Voldemort:
My thoughts exactly about the scars. Though I will have to maul someone at some point just to see if I can do it haha.

DakHam:
Glad you like it so far. I actually already did those extentions to some degree already, but it might need a bit more. I will see how it looks.

BastardPoetry:
All great stuff, we definitely need a few more characters.

I will have more thoughts later.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you yet. We gotta wait for Cheetah, since he and I make these decisions together. (He's Co-Producer now, which means he has power over me. If I make a decision without him, he'll throw me in the dishwasher again and set it to heavy load).

And I have a question. Do you plan on using the spells. Melt, Quake, and
Tornado on Kanbarif? If so i have an Idea for Flood that I could test to see if
it looks alright.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 15, 2008, 10:56:28 am
Yeah, Kanbabrif used Melt for part of the Starry Frog spell in Part I.

He'll use Quake and Tornado for other spells in Part II. Really, he uses a lot of spell animations.

Flood test, huh? I'm going to take a guess: Bethla Flood animation?

Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 15, 2008, 11:00:21 am
Ha ha! Yeah, I've tested that one out. The animation itself is fine, but it'll do one of two things: end the battle or freeze the game.

I tested it at the first battle of FFT, in Gariland. All of the water in those little waterways ended up disappearing!  :P

Then the battle ended.
Title:
Post by: Cyberblade on July 15, 2008, 11:03:11 am
That was freaking hilarious.

I was fighting in the Sard rat Cellar and used it.

Everyone in the effect area vanished just like what you can do in the real fight. another thing, it doesn't show the damage it deals (im gonna try to see why it freezes the game)
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 15, 2008, 11:09:56 am
Yeah, the damage never displays on some of those big event animations.

I'm particularly fond of Dejeon Send, Dejeon Arrive, Altima Transformation, Altima's Ultimate Transformation and End of the World (Altima's Death).

The game never freezes on me when I use those ones. Except for End of the World. That one definitely ENDS everything.

Alright then... (I know you said "no dead characters" but I really couldn't resist, if it's not alright I can come up with another idea.)

(Sprite is thanks to FFMaster? I believe, Palette is Teta's)

Name: Barius Belontine
Birthday: August 20 (Leo)
Age: Claims to be over 800 years old
Traits: Close minded, Argumental, Holier then thou

Personality: Will talk a big show, but when it comes time for action will use some of his "skills" that have kept him alive for "800 years"

Biography: Barius Belontine was one of Ajora's 12 Disciples, he was tracked through Barius Valley and finally executed at Barius Hill, at least that's how the legend goes... This man will tell you that is not the case. He used other means to escape his fate by setting a double in his place. From that moment on he had attained "immortality" perhap's Ajora's last miracle to give unto him...? He seems to be a fresh faced youth, his only oddity is the severely outdated form of dress. Many take him as a madman and ignore him on sight. A beggar and a self proclaimed prophet, the man has scoured all of Ivalice and has found none that will accept him, his tale, or his outrageous behavior. Though now with this Bishop Kanbabrif fellow running about...

If he can become part of their resistance force! (Certainly as HE is a Saint they must accept him! How can you say "no thank you" to one of those you pay reverence to!?)  even for an instant, his name will come to light and his "true worth" shown to the world. For once in "800 years" he can finally have his name shine, rather then being a dead man on a hill... "Just you wait Ivalice! This land will soon hear the name of *this* Barius Belontine now with real worth and more then a passing breath! Where are the hymns about me? The epic tales? I also held the stone of Leo for a time! Why must that glory hog Ajora take everything?!"

With quick resolve, a flashy sword, an outdated noble's outfit, and smooth blonde hair, the "saint" leaves his home of Yardow Fort City and proceeds to track down the Anti-Kanbabrif Task Force!

Post by: Cheetah on July 15, 2008, 02:09:29 pm
The sprites both look quite good. Lasting Dawn's just looks like there is one off color for his legs (that light yellow), should be easy to fix.

Cyberblade:
The design looks quite good (the hood might need touchups but maybe not), the colors need a bit flat and you need a larger spectrum for your shades. Did you try just using the original Rofel colors? But bottom line is that it looks good and it can make it in with just a little work.

So I think it is totally possible to get these sprites in here and give them the name that you want, but I don't know about the back story. We can give them a bit of the personality you guys talked about and that will be great, we just already have a story and characters and throwing too much backstory in for everyone would really slow down things. But we will always keep in mind what you ideally want and who knows what will happen (certainly not BastardPoetry and I).
Title:

I threw that sprite together in like 15 minutes cheetah =P

I was just fooling around then i had seen the open slot so i will be updating it by the end of the day. I know the colors look a bit flat and using the rofel color pallette is a good idea ill see how that looks in a minute.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 15, 2008, 02:18:35 pm
Indeed, but I recall that's how the fellows a Gamefaqs also presented their characters, of course the whole thing can't be used, far too much screen time for a minor character. But just to have all the info. there for use, if need be, to pick and choose and allows more diversity if need be, of course. In any case, yes.... that's normally the problem with pure palette switches (all of my editing tools are outdated and all the dates have expired) but yes, if you could fix that,( I would if I could but my tools are pretty obsolete now) it would be wonderful. Oh as well, I know you have a Ton on your plate already, but would you happen to be able to think up a portait for Barius? (Of course only if he's accepted)

Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 15, 2008, 02:54:14 pm
The colors look good now Cyperblade, nice job. The hood might look a little weird when it is animated because it has so much texturing on it. It might be okay but I would suggest looking at Zozma and my work on the Rofokare sprite over at Lasting Dawns Mercenaries thread to get some ideas on how to fix up the hood. Then compare what you have versus what the Rofokare hood would look like in Skye's colors to see which you think would work better.

If you wanted to work on fixing that color for Lasting Dawn's spite before I did the portrait that would be fine. I'm just not sure when I will get to his portrait. Either way is fine.

Hehe, anything is fine with me, it does look quite nice as it currently is, it looks like the base was Wiegraf? If so, you made him look quite much younger, very nice. No need to spice it up, Barius isn't really a fellow that would be spiffy or anything of that sort. .

First off, WBM, there will definitely be a Part III. So take your time  :)

Skye is in. His character actually works PERFECTLY with one aspect of the story. In fact, he fits into another part of the story entirely, so we still have 3 characters available for Dorminid's gang.

On that note, could we also use your Rofokare, Lasting Dawn? I don't want to spoil anything, but we were actually going to need 3 hooded figures for one scene. Skye and Rofokare would be perfect for 2/3. And I think Cheetah had something in mind for the 3rd guy.

As far as Barius goes, I really like the idea behind him.. but it won't work with the story we've set up. We could use his sprite for one of Dorminid's crew, and it'd be a minor character who probably gets killed off like 90% of the cast.. But, in my opinion, that's kind of a shame to do to such a cool character idea. There may be a way to incorporate him into Part III instead, but you'd have to make him look much older. It's up to you.

Cheetah, did you get the email I sent to your hotmail?

Certainly, Rofokare's sprite belongs to the board, certainly not just I, but yes... I think you might be right, hehe. No problem about Barius, I can redo the sprite for Part 3, if it is needed at the time, come to think of it, I believe it was Lavian's palette, good eye.

The fact that my little Dorminid's going to have her own crew makes me as giddy as a pixelated little girl.

By the way, the quality and sheer volume of sprites and portraits coming out of this board is reaching nigh-Renaissance proportions.  I regret leveling up so much in the Scholar class rather than as an Artist; my growth rates are too screwed up now.  *Sigh*  I suppose all that's left for me to do is stand back and appreciate!

Haha no worries Dormin I feel the same way often about other things. I will never write as well as Bastard, and I will never be as good of a programmer is Melonhead, but we all have different ways of contributing. There are a lot of other names I could put there for a variety of different things btw.

Oh and here is a new version of Philsov for consideration!

Multo bueno! His armor looks more like armor than a spacesuit now!

The haircut is growing on me..

By the way, thanks for the writing compliment. Bastard Poetry is the name of a novel I'm working on, and it'll likely put the Chronicles to shame.

^I would pay for that.

I was always suspicious that you were a writer, you write so well in your battle synopses.

By any chance do you like Fyodor Dostoyevsky?
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 16, 2008, 11:23:51 am
You know, I've never actually read any Dostoyevsky.

I'm sure I'll end up reading his work, though, in the next few years. Now that I'm back in college, and far far far away from the Bible-thumping small town high school whose idea of literature was anything about the Puritan times, as a way to somehow make religion the focus of everything in school. I have a feeling I'll be reading real literature soon, for a change.

I can tell you that my greatest influences are Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce and Douglas Adams. I'm slowly adapting my writing style into a sort of amalgamation of their works. In fact, I like to think that I'm next up for following in a magnificent line of Great Atheist Humorist Writers & Derelicts (or GAHWD, as I like to call it).

Because, let's face it, atheists suck when they take themselves too seriously

I'm actually working on two novels:

Bastard Poetry - Comedy
Or Martyrdom - Tragedy
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 16, 2008, 01:27:35 pm
A few more touchups on Philsov and I think he will be ready to go. I think I will be updating his portrait a bit for each part so I'm not too concerned about adding lots of detail right now. I want to leave room for growth.

That is interesting stuff about your writing style Bastard. Do you have any examples you would care to share, besides the chronicles of course?

I'm flattered all around, guys. Thanks!

I have a lot of responses to catch up on, on every forum/email outlet, but I'm going to have to put them off until tomorrow. I just finished a whirlwind sort of day while operating on only 2 hours of sleep, so I'm going to go pass out now. Tomorrow's going to be dedicated to catching up on some house cleaning and packing, so I'll probably force myself to stay off of the computer until the evening.

Just to let you guys know, I started a topic on the WotL board for the Chronicles and invited users there to apply for character spots. So far, the feedback and submissions have been great! So I'm looking forward to see how many more great ideas come streaming through in the next 48 hours. Then we can sort them all out and pick the 3 best suited for the job.

Although, we may end up with enough character ideas to cover the whole series, Cheetah!

Oh, and I'd be more than happy to share my writing with you guys. In fact, that was the whole reason I bought The Muse of Oblivion website; for my writing. Unfortunately, I've been far too busy playing with my CoK lately, so I haven't written anything in ages, and the site is still empty.

That'll change in the near future.

Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 17, 2008, 02:30:47 am
That would require an absolute ton of reworking to make work, it would be nearly impossible to fit everything into our events.  Oh as well, Barius's character will be reworked, but more info. on that later. The portrait will need changed, but I'mn sure Cheetah is well aware of this and we can all address that at a much later time. Though I think I'll use that portrait for the Traveler in Mercenaries, if he doesn't mind of course.

people would surely post in it, but like bp said he still has many other parts to finish (and they are movies, not playable patches)

and making this a playable patch would need to be a re-vamp of all storyline events, which is a lot more complex than simply editing things around for a balance patch

if this gets its own section it should be to talk about COK the movie project, not about COK the playable patch, since that's obviously

1) something that doesn't exist right now and
2) we have no clue if thats something BP wants to work on

Sorry I haven't gotten to this yet Cyberblade. I have been busy working behind the scenes to get stuff ready for Part II. I haven't posted any new portraits in forever :(. I would suggest working on fixing up the Barius sprite without the portrait for right now as it will likely just make it more complicated.

Well I think that Barius, if permitted, I would like to turn him into the generic Traveler for Mercenaries. So no need to rush it, but the portrait as it is, is fine, if it could be put on the sprite that alone would be fine.

Sorry, for some reason I thought this was the Mercenaries patch (or maybe the classics?) but I totally love watching the videos (only seen one so far, maybe more noew?) Only problem is, I never discuss videos so my "20pts" really shouldn't count for anything.

Plus, I'm not really in charge of any patches that are currently underway.  My ideas have changed far too much to allow me to work on the VK.  I really shouldn't even have mod status anymore.

Perhaps next Spring/Summer, when I plan on doing the second trilogy.

Yeah I'm kind of on the fence for having an individual section for the Chronicles as well. It would be nice to have separate threads for all these character designs and portraits. Plus a different place for character submissions and plot ideas. It would just make things less cluttered, plus it would be nice for it to be in a more recognizable spot for visitors to see some of the major projects coming out of FFH. But like BastardPoetry said, there is going to be a lot less activity on this project once we complete part II. But still it would be nice to have a dedicated section to let visitors know it is still happening.

PS: This is one of the longest threads in the forums thus far.

Copypasta from Vimeo:

"The Vimeo staff has decided that we are no longer going to allow gaming videos on Vimeo. Specifically, we are no longer going to allow game walk-throughs, game strategy videos, depictions of player vs player battles, raids, fraps, or any other video gaming videos that simply depict individuals playing a video game. Videos falling into this category will be subject to deletion as of September 1st; new videos of this type will be removed.

There are many reasons for the decision, two of which we would like to elaborate on.

1) Vimeo was created with the intent of inspiring creativity and providing a place to share video with friends and family. The Vimeo staff does not feel that videos which are direct captures of video game play truly constitute "creative expression". Further, such videos may expose Vimeo to liability from the game creator(s), as we have already seen action from popular video game companies against videos such as these.

2) Gaming videos are by nature significantly larger and longer than any other genre on Vimeo. Over these last few months they have been the single biggest reasons for our transcoder wait times.

This decision was not easy, and there was much debate internally; however, we feel this decision will benefit Vimeo in the long run and better benefit the video makers it was created for. Our resources are limited and they must be channeled towards maintaining our goals.

Two questions you might have:

1) Are my gaming videos going to be deleted?

Starting today, all new gaming videos are subject to deletion. Videos uploaded before today will be hosted until September 1.

2) I make Machinima films! It's not the same thing! Am I banned?

We currently do not feel that Machinima films fall under the category of gaming videos described above and, therefore, assuming compliance with our site’s general terms & conditions, we will continue to accept such videos on Vimeo. We are not, at this time, banning films that fall into the Machinima genre."

Bastard Poetry, here is my reply to their "New Upload Rules" Blog on Vimeo:

QuoteSTAFF WROTE: "One of the things we think defines Vimeo and differentiate it from YouTube is the humanity. We're not sure game videos advance that idea. At the very least, we're sure they're not worth the resources we spend on them."

L O L

So now Vimeo is some sort of "Life Coach" service to advance humanity or something?

"THE HUMANITY?" Please.

You're a video sharing site, nothing more. Albeit one that is smaller and less successful (and apparently more elitist) than Youtube. I can see why now though.

Your job as staff members has nothing to do judging what is "art" or what is not "art". You're STAFF, not art critics.

Your job is to make sure the service is working, and supply the necessary resources for it to work.

I know we don't pay you to keep this service up, but next time you open up a FREE VIDEO service, put up a disclaimer that says:

"VIMEO STAFF WILL DELETE WHATEVER WE THINK IS NOT COOL FROM OUT SITE. THX."

Cya Vimeo.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 22, 2008, 05:58:19 pm
Well said, Archealogy.

What a bunch of fucking snobs.

I'm looking into backup plans. Obviously, the appeal of Vimeo was that I could upload longer videos in higher quality and embed them to my website in a way that allowed viewers to see the video itself without all of the damn logos and shit plastered across the screen. I have no problem using the HD option of Youtube, but I really hate breaking the video up into segments for obvious reasons.

I'll look in Veoh sometime. Though at first glance, it doesn't look like it'll accomplish what I want. It looks a little too commercial.
Title:
Post by: Archael on July 22, 2008, 06:26:54 pm
Im sure there's other sites that allow longer than 11 m vids

dunno about quality.. vimeo pwns them all with regards to that aspect

OR you could suck up to them and email a staffer and explain they take a look at ur content to see it's "ARTLOL"

but personally, I erased my Vimeo account 2 minutes after reading your post.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 22, 2008, 06:32:13 pm
Technically, I think I'd be fine to continue using Vimeo. The more I read of their little debates, the more I'm beginning to see how my videos would fall into the "creative expression" category, and even THEY couldn't argue. Plus, I had no idea what Machinima is, but someone in one of the debates posted this:

Machinima is, according to Wikipedia:
"machinima productions are produced using the tools (demo recording, camera angle, level editor, script editor, etc.) and resources (backgrounds, levels, characters, skins, etc.) available in a game.

Machinima is an example of emergent gameplay, a process of putting game tools to unexpected ends, and of artistic computer game modification."

I think I'm fine. But you never know with guys like that. Hey Voldemort, are you reading the posts below the "news" article? Notice how most of the people supporting the no-video-game rule have avatars of themselves holding a camera.. to pretend as though they're some visionary directors or some shit? And the comments about "girls farting in tubs or kids shoving marshmallows in their mouths are considered ART!?" Ha ha ha!
Title:
Post by: Archael on July 22, 2008, 06:36:00 pm
CoK could be considered Machinima.

Machinima usually has voice acting though.

Keep your Vimeo but make sure to find an alternative JIC.

I won't be re-activating my account with them.

Asshats.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 22, 2008, 07:26:37 pm
The chronicles are definitely Machinima, so I think you will be fine with Vimeo. I can understand why they would want to remove a lot of video game videos, I'm sure it seems like a bit of a strain. But they aren't being very polite or thoughtful about it.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 22, 2008, 07:39:41 pm
Cheetah's right; I'm sure my videos will be okay.

In the end, I will go with whatever option is best for the videos themselves. If it remains Vimeo, I will stick with them, even if I am disgusted with the pretentious attitude.

By the way, Voldemort, I noticed one of their users responded to a quote from your post:

Karen Abad loves Dinosaurs. 1 hour ago
"You're a video sharing site, nothing more. Albeit one that is smaller and less successful (and apparently more elitist) than Youtube. I can see why now though."

I'll have to disagree with the fact that Vimeo is just a video sharing site an nothing more. I feel like a lot of the people who actively use Vimeo are more concerned with the community aspect of vimeo rather than just using it to upload their videos in such high quality (which is a plus).

I'll have to say too though, even though my videos get less traffic on vimeo than on youtube, I appreciate all the constructive criticism and or praise, comments, and feedback on my videos over the arbitrary and infantile comments my videos get from Youtube like, "OMGz Yr Ghey! BuRn in Hellz!~"

I'm sorry you feel so harshly about vimeo, and I hope you find whatever you are looking for in whatever video service sites you pursue.

Except I didn't see your post anywhere but here and the copy-pasta you made on the Gamefaqs thread.

Okay I'm working on the new characters that were approved for Part II. I will be posting previews of the palette swaps and once those get the green light I will work on the palette swaps for the portraits.

First up is Voltram the Archmage. The goal here was basically standard Time Mage colors on a summoner.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on July 22, 2008, 08:53:06 pm
Hey Cheetah, I forgot to tell you about this.

DakHam and I had a little miscommunication back when he picked his character's colors. He said "red or blue" and I accidentally read "red AND blue." Anyways, I discussed it with him, and he asked for different colors. I went ahead and made the change, since color swaps are easy to do. Let me know what you think.

I think the hat might have ended up a little too dark but it looks good eveywhere else. He didn't want any color other than the brown trim?

Okay second up is Dominic. He asked for a black and grey Squire. Since the armor is already silver I just changed his head covering to black, and then made the belt a nice navy blue. Thoughts?

I'll lighten DakHam's hat a bit. Also, I'll let him know to come over here and take a look at it, to get his feedback.

His exact request was:

"As for sprite, red or blue is fine. Although black would be absolutely pimp, if that is not too much trouble."

(Then later, after we cleared up the confusion on my end)

"Blue -> Black may prove interesting."

So I translated that to mean he wanted a black/gray combo, but I thought it looked nice with the little touches of brown in there as well.

Well then that is definitely what he asked for so it works just fine. It would be cool if he dropped by to give his input either way though :).

Okay so here is Dominic's portrait and Shoulder's sprite.

I'm not completely sadistfied with how the Shoulder's sprite is looking right now so I could use some input on that. I just never was a fan of the head piece, but I don't think there is much I can do with it.

Quote from: "Cheetah"Hmm so Terran just requested a red cape for his knight. I looked through the palettes already for the knight and grabbed the one with the red cape. But now I don't know what else to do to it because it already looks good. Thoughts?

I suppose that'll just have to do, then. Unless if Terran comes by any time soon to request something further, and if it can be done quickly. Since we're getting closer and closer to the deadline, though, I'm happy enough to just accept simple and easy.

Oh, and Archaelology

I think Mr. Chief used to is a pretty cool guy. Eh gets b& by the Vimeo and does afraid of the artistic vision of their community.

I asked the Vimeo overlords in a very polite and respectable manner if my videos would be acceptable under the new guidelines. Here's the screen shot of their response.

The first guy is just a user giving his impressions, the second is one of the bosses, giving his final answer.

Cheetah, are you "Xythar?"

I went ahead and responded thusly:

"Thank you for checking, dalas.

Be sure to let everyone know that you are not accepting machinima afterall.

Slowbeef, I didn't take offense to your comment about not being able to tell it apart from the actual game.. I actually took that as a compliment! It was meant to be like a psuedo "sequel," with a whole new story and new characters and new features never before seen in the game. I can understand how someone who has never played it before could accidentally mistake this for being an actual game, though. A lot of work went into making it look that way :D"

I am not Xythar (which is a very hilarioius statement btw). But that is good news because it means you have a new fan and supporter. So this sucks and I don't know how much traffic they usually get on their site but that is a really freaking long discussion. I agree with what you said. I'm not sure I would take Part I down though, let it stay as long as it can as a testament to the quality of work that they are removing. Go ahead and argue and gripe for a good while longer to let your cause be known.

Eventually these guys are going to realize that they have opened a can of worms that they weren't quite ready to dive into.

But either way we will find a different a better outlet. You have your own site so we can always host it there. It wont reach as many people maybe, but you can post the lower quality ones on Youtube and direct people to the real deal. If you need financial help as far as hosting goes we can figure it out.

I'm sorry that I don't have an account there to make my voice be heard.

Do not fret, this is but a minor hiccup and changes nothing.

You're right. I shouldn't let this get to me, but it just happened to occur at the same time I received some other bad news. So my overall mood may have come through a little more than I expected. I was trying to make a humorous point, but I think it did still show some anger as well.

We'll figure out another option. I have until September 1st before they take it down anyways.

Cheetah,

Since we agreed it'd be cool to have a blue Red Mage and a red Blue Mage, I went ahead and swapped Dorminid to red. What do you think?
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 23, 2008, 03:59:39 am
I like that shade of red, it is a very good color. Not too bright, not too dark, perfect. I'm going to make a few more color adjustments though too. I will send you the updated version of this along with all the new characters in the morning. Need to call it a night for now.

*Minor Spoiler*

So obviously it has been shown that Olan was going to be in. I am just considering (key word is considering) giving him a new look as he is now a Duke. So what do people think of this? Olan with a beard and a more decorative outfit. The colors are totally open to suggestions, and I'm really not sure about this. So if you think it doesn't look good definitely say so.

All good thoughts.

Sen: I'm not going to do long hair mostly because it would take too much effort, and because it is a distinguishing trait of his.

Cyber: I feel like silver/red would be too evil looking. Cool, but evil.

And one pro for the beard and one con...hmmm.

Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 26, 2008, 01:58:33 am
Technically shouldn't Olan wear Goltana/Delita's colors? Gold and Red should work for that, or Red and White. Or perhaps something to show his allegiance to the Black Lion, even in death.
Title:
Post by: Dormin Jake on July 26, 2008, 02:01:25 am
Love the beard idea for Olan.  It shows time has passed without making him unrecognizeable.

I'm fine with the robes.  Blue/gold might be closer to Lesalia's color scheme than Zeltennia's, but then again, I doubt that every single Zeltennian wears nothing but red/black every single day anyway.  It was Kanbabrif's scheme, after all, and he was at least ostensibly an aide of Goltana's.

sure. his name's corban, and his job's called 'specialist'; it's basically a gun-wielding mediator/hitman hybrid. (a revamped last breath's the only assassin-esque skill, but hey)

as you can tell, it's base is balthier.

Post by: Bastard Poetry on August 07, 2008, 04:43:45 pm
Hey guys!

Sorry I haven't been around much. I'm working my ass off on the video whenever I get a chance.. which is, unfortunately, not happening as often as I would like. As many of you may have guessed, Part II still isn't even close to completion yet. By the end of tomorrow, I may have it over 50% complete, but it will still take a few weeks to finish the rest.

Cheetah has been an absolute STUD about helping with the work load. In fact, I can very confidently say that he has done far more work on this project so far than I have.. though it is my turn now. He's pretty much finished all of the sprite/portrait work now, and all that's left is for me to keep throwing all of this stuff together and creating the scenes. There are going to be 8 scenes total, with an estimated running time of approximately 45 minutes. As of right now, I have 1 big scene finished, and I'm working on 2 BIGGER scenes today and tomorrow. Just to reassure you guys.. those 3 are the HARD scenes. The rest should be cake. Time consuming cake, but cake nonetheless.*

Next week is moving week for me. We're moving from Denver to Fort Collins, for school reasons. I'm pretty excited about it, but only because I like "starting over" in a new house.. I'm not too thrilled about leaving Denver, though. It's always been MY city, damn it. Anyways, everything that could possibly deter me from working on this project HAS and WILL CONTINUE TO accost me from every conceivable direction, but I am fighting tooth and nail to keep at it when I can! I repeat: tooth and nail. Biting and.. um.. fingernail scratches! Like a frenzied bastard!

So just hang tight, be patient and keep doing what you guys do best! I promise that this video will be MORE THAN WORTH THE WAIT!

* The cake is a lie. I just wanted to be optimistic.

You know, I hadn't noticed this the first... three times, I watched the first part, but while watching Voldemort's video commentary, Kanbabrif's goal appears to be to bring down the Occuria. This oddly conincides with my theory of that being the Lucavi's ultimate goal, reign terror on Ivalice, to call the God's down, then when they had enraged them and lured them to fight, dispatch of them. Now that the Gods are fighting on middle ground and not their home turf it gives Altima and her Lucavi a much better chance of victory, since the battle is no longer a defense battle, but a wide open fight. It is strange that this also appears to be Kanbabrif's goal... hmm...

For those of you who don't know, m'lady and I were burglar'd for hammer recently. Someone broke into our new place while we were asleep upstairs and oblivious, and stole our laptops (OUCH), a stack of empty cd cases (zing on them), a pack of cigarettes (Eclipse, which are 'fakey-like' because I'm trying to quit.. so zing again?), a lighter and my deodorant, for some fucking reason. (It's good deodorant?) Ever since then, we've been on the hunt--pawn shops, craiglist, police beatdowns, etc--to try and find our precious toys.

We still haven't had any luck finding them. We just discovered several non-pawn-shop-like businesses in this city that buy and sell used computers, so we're going to check those out later today. I'm really hoping that we find them, and preferably before the hard drives are wiped out. The odds are slim, but it would be really nice to reclaim my work on the Chronicles of Kanbabrif Part 2. I was about 40% complete.

If we find the laptop with everything erased, then I will start from scratch. Cheetah still has all of the character sheets and such, and I still have ONE COMPLETED SCENE stashed away somewhere. So.. about 10% right there.

If we can't find the laptop, then it will be a long time before I can get back to work. I need to save up money to buy a decent computer. I have internet access again, true, but I'm using some ancient monstrosity from the Clinton administration with only 3 gig and a penchant for failing to recognize even the simplest USB memory stick things.
Title:

Indeed, the Baron Bolmna is finished! And such a wonderful sprite he looks!
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 23, 2008, 11:37:09 am
So obviously this project has taken a pretty major blow from BP's computer getting stolen. But I refuse to let the villainous acts of others to influence how I lead my life and thus I will not be taking any kind of break from this project. This is all very easy for me to say seeing as how I wasn't affected directly like BP and am not dealing with any of the struggles he is, but I want to support and encourage him as much as I can and this is the best way I know how.

Thanks to Voldemort's great commentary on Part I, I feel that the Chronicles are even more popular than ever. The anticipation for Part II is great and I'm hoping that the support of this community will help keep BastardPoetry's spirits high so that this incident will only be a small speed bump in the march of the great Kanbabrif.

So on that note here is a mysterious hooded figure based of the hooded Gaf at the execution site. Really all I did was add a front view to the character. I am going to attempt to do a walking animation from the rear view for him, but not much else. Though he is rather cool looking. I am also going to post an alternative palette option soon to see what people think.

I'm going to continue to use this thread as sounding board for the work I'm doing to get criticism and hopefully keep people informed so that everyone knows this project is still going strong.

looks awesome 5*

a black palette, perhaps?/
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 23, 2008, 03:34:29 pm
So here are the palette options. What I would really like to know is whether people think the third one down (the better looking white/tan one) is a viable option. If people don't think it will work I will probably stick with the standard brown. I was just testing the blue and I did the black so Voldemort would know what it looked like. But these are the colors this hooded guy's partners will likely be, so I'm looking for some variety. Plus if the white/tan looks good then it will make for some cooler things. Sorry very vague because I don't want to give away any surprises.

Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on August 24, 2008, 01:30:37 am
Awesome work, Cheetah! I like the brown one and the black one, equally.

I'm really glad that you're doing what you can to keep the excitement up, and continuing work on the fine details. It means a lot to me--as does the support of everyone here.

With the wedding coming up in less than a month, and the struggles to get our life together and settled here in the new city, and my own personal struggles to get my old fun toys to work on this ancient laptop from '98, I haven't been as ambitious about working on the Chronicles. I think about it a lot, but that often leads to more anger at having lost all of the work I had done, as well as the general frustration of WANTING to do more work, but lacking the means to do it. I actually spent the last two days struggling to find a screen recording program that will work on this thing.. with very little luck. It seems that running a screen recorder and an emulator at the same time is just too much for this little guy to handle. The slow down made it sickly and senile. On the up side, I did manage to get ePSXe and an image of FFT to work. The quality's not great, but it's not bad either, and it runs perfectly on 100 FPS. Just.. can't record it.

Anyways, I will definitely be around to keep up with you guys. I don't always have the time to post lengthy things or linger much, but I'll still deliver e-high fives when I can.

Also, Corban: Cashel actually just found out about a variety of different tracking options for laptops. (Too late for us, but good for future purchases). There's one where you register on a site, and if it's ever stolen, they can track it. I'm sure there are also GPS-like things out there. I asked her to look up that information again so that I could post it for you, but she's in the middle of something right now. So if you don't have any luck googling it, let me know and I'll post some info for you tomorrow.

Oh, and ALL GLORY TO KANBABRIF!
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 24, 2008, 02:22:45 pm
I haven't gotten the official "okay" from BP but I'm going to continue forward to test using the white/tan option since people seemed to think it would work well. I touched up the standard animations and now I am working on a walking animation. I'm actually kind of excited about this because I made a gif animation to see it in action and now I'm going to see if I can share and show it off! I did the frames from scratch and this is my first attempt at animating it. It needs some touching up but what do people think so far (hopefully it shows correctly!!).

PS: Heck yeah it works, freaking sweet.

Title:
Post by: Zozma on August 24, 2008, 06:14:31 pm
that walking preview is a pretty neat idea...
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 24, 2008, 10:22:52 pm
Yeah the gif preview is awesome, it just really isn't all that easy to do with other sprites since they are in pieces (this guy's arms are attached). But using shishi it should be easy to grab the put together frames and then make it into a gif really fast.

I wasn't originally intending to complete this sprite, but I really enjoy working on the walking animations so maybe someday. This guy plus the Rofokare sprite could make for a good high magic class like a sorcerer or something for male and female versions.

The walking animation is still rough and I will work on it tonight. I think he will likely always look a bit like a penguin though. Evil is good though. I need to add motion to his right side and probably a bit of waggle to his hood. Though I'm starting to worry that it might end up being too much motion and maybe I should strive for just a slight whisper of movement. I will do more gif previews and show them off though for comments. Criticism makes all this stuff worth doing haha.

You might want him to dip at the full length of his stride, as the other sprites do. Also, the fabric has to come from somewhare when  it gets pulled forward by his feet or arms.  The way the cloak is shaped to start is fine for standing still, but it should deform when the limbs move in either direction.

It's a good start, though.

Vanya:
Yeah it took all of thirty seconds to remove the stasch haha. The colors for the hood and chin strap took most of the effort.

Ryonin:
Heck yeah now that is the kind of constructive criticism I have been looking for. Great suggestion about the dipping at the full stride, and I will definitely be keeping your other comments in mind as I continue forward. Hopefully I will have another preview soon, maybe later tonight.

Kenshin:
What is this toad you speak of? I think anything with movement in a static screen just automatically really sucks in your attention. I used to think everyone's fixation on Argg's avatar was the boobs, but now I think it is just the cyclical animation. Sorry that probably wasn't the reaction you were looking for, but I'm a psych guy so that is how I think about things haha.

Yeah, its a toad that has hypnotic eyes, all you need to do is look at him and you are under its spell.

Okay everyone I need some advice. I just can't figure out what to change in the walking animation? Is there something wrong with the leg motion (I feel like he almost looks like he is high kicking)? I think I'm going to test him in game to see how it looks compared to other sprites, advice is always appreciated though.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on August 28, 2008, 01:39:13 pm
I see no problem with it. It looks fine to me.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on August 28, 2008, 01:53:59 pm
The only thing that look odd is the couple of dark pixels at the far right of the arm and leg that look like they are appearing and disappearing.
Title:

i would think it should look fine in game, have you already tried it?

Yay for the weekend and hopefully some time for more spriting. Here is a quick look at similar palette options for the female hooded figure. I can't remember if BP wanted the female person to actually be Rofokare or just use the same sprite, so I'm posting this to see what he thinks of the different colors.

Next is to test Hooded Man in game and continue tweaking his walking animation.
Title:
Post by: Ryonin on August 30, 2008, 04:44:56 am
I was thinking something more like the attached. Please forgive how rough it is; it's only meant to illustrate the leg movement and corresponding downward motion of the body.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on August 30, 2008, 09:47:20 am
That's the ticket! that looks much more natural!
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 30, 2008, 11:59:57 am
It does look much better. I'm not completely sure about the bobbing, but it is worth testing out. I have also been thinking of greatly reducing the movement of the arms, because it doesn't make much sense if they are covered up. It would make for a more ethereal feel to the character too. Great advice and I will definitely use your sketch as a base for the legs to see how it turns out. Is that an actual drawing or did you use some weird filter?
Title:
Post by: Ryonin on August 30, 2008, 02:31:29 pm
All of the other sprites bob, though. It doesn't look quite right in my example, since it's only three out of the five frames the rest use.

I sketched it out with a tablet. It started out as using the pink over a the stationary sprite, as it would stand out. I didn't like how that looked, so I just traced over the rest of it and removed the original.  Shrinking it by 50% helped hide some of the sketchy-ness.
Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on August 30, 2008, 02:58:52 pm
I think the middle one will work the best.

Sorry for the delay, I haven't been around FFH as much lately! I'll email you sometime, when I get a chance, to let you know what vague ideas I had for her.

This wedding is getting closer, plans are getting chaotic and family drama is erupting all over! Some are already prepared to draw blood.

Three more weeks until the happy day, and then there will be real war..
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 30, 2008, 03:03:44 pm
BP: No worries I know things are getting nutso for you haha. Yeah I'm liking the black, I will make some adjustments so it goes a bit better with the under skirt.

Ryonin: Cool, I really should make use of my tablet more often. What I'm noticing as I'm working on this is that I just need to really tone down the amount of motion happening. The robe is just too bulky and shouldn't show much movement. Your sketch is still really helpful though and I'm hopefully at least getting the movement of the fabric better even if it isn't quite as exaggerated. My current version does have the bob. I will probably post a preview in a couple hours or sometime today.

Holy... I just tried to think and put myself in your shoes

Title:
Post by: Bastard Poetry on August 30, 2008, 03:29:56 pm
I'm 25 now, and I've been with her for nearly 5 years (the wedding date is also our anniversary). And we've been engaged for 2 years. So I'm not freaking out about getting married because it's been a long time coming, we already know exactly what we're getting into and, honestly, neither of us see the wedding as some HUGE CHANGE. We'll go right back to spending our evenings as the "boring married couple" we've always been--watching movies, playing with our cats, blackmailing our neighbors, starting small fires, drinking and wrestling.. All in all, a tax break and the chance to take care of us BOTH with one health insurance plan--those are the only real changes.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on August 30, 2008, 03:46:19 pm
It definitely does sound like you have a good thing going for you Bastard and doing things intelligently. Oh my gosh what I wouldn't give for 2 years to plan the wedding haha, I have 9 months :(

Okay here is another walking preview (I know they used to be cool and now they are getting kind of lame lol). But trying to tone down the amount of leg motion. What do people think? I will only be adding in barely any arm and hood motion. Hopefully the next preview will be a video preview, if I can figure that stuff out.

EDIT: Hmmm okay so I'm thinking the left leg is looking good. I need to work on the right though (I just like talking out loud).
Title:

Title:

the middle frame where everything is strait should be the highest point in both other directions from the middle frame it should go lower and lower
Title:
Post by: Ryonin on August 31, 2008, 12:02:41 am
The bob should be the deepest at the length of each stride.  From standing it should go down twice as one leg advances, then back up twice to the standing position, then down twice when the other leg is going forward.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on September 01, 2008, 02:30:28 pm
Oh my gosh I am so done with this walking animation. Here is the last gif preview of this. Unless he looks horrible in game I don't plan on making many more adjustments other than perhaps a slight arm movement if people think it is necessary. I corrected the bob on this preview too like you were saying. I was trying to go up on instead of down for one of the frames of animation, but that was wrong.

He looks like he could be Algus's little brother, so yeah, I can see him being noble.  What an adorable little bastard (if we're to believe the rumors).  He may not be the king of Ivalice, thanks to Delita, but he sure looks plucky nonetheless.

though this is somewhat off-topic of the current topic, i'll still post my question. this goes out to BP (or anyone else that can answer it).

"how is it that you(he) got the Starry Frog spell to include multiple spell effects?"

i may want to include a spell that uses multiple effects, but i assume this is probably a result of editing the video recording and not actually creating a spell that casts off multiple effects...but if it is, HOW DO I DO IT?

Special video effects, nearly everything he's done in the older videos was simply special effects. He cut one part, editted another, etc, etc. It really makes his work that much more impressive, since you have to realize he made all of those to work in sequence with just his recording equipment.

Sorry, C-Blade, but there hasn't been any way to work on Part II for awhile now. There IS, however, one finished scene uploaded to YouTube as a private video--the infamous Scene 5.

I'd be willing to let you see it, but it'll cost you. Name your first born after me, or sacrifice it to my name; whichever is most convenient.

Kekekekeke, ok seriously, send me a friend request on youtube and I'll add you to the view list. Since you created a character, I'll let you in on the fun. Just be warned that Scene 5 is spoilerz'd.

Okay here is a test I did to see if doing the Chronicles would be possible using event editing. It is just a quick scene, but if you compare it to the original you can see that a lot more detail can be added.

So here is what my scheming mind has come up with. Sound is totally able to be done with this, I just choose not to here. Read the description for more details.

Hey guys,

I still can't afford a new computer, but I may have figured out a way to start working on the Chronicles again. I'm gathering my resources, testing the logistics, making notes, writing up a script, etc, etc.

Cheetah, I'll email you something lengthy and descriptive once I have a better idea of where I stand.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been extraordinarily swamped. However, I wanted to let you guys know that I AM still alive, occasionally lurking and, most importantly, I haven't given up on the CoK.

Unfortunately, however, this post isn't a guarantee. I only think I've got a few tricks up my sleeve.. If previous experience has taught me anything, it's that I shouldn't make any absolute declarations about any such tricks because, as it so often happens, something usually comes along and rips off said sleeves.

I'm going to copypasta the thing I wrote on the other CoK topic at GF:

I may need some help from all of you, the fans. If any of you have any of the following games and the capability to record in HD or at least higher quality, let me know:

Tales of Destiny 2
Warcraft 3
Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn or Radiant Dawn or FE10 or whatever the hell it's called
FFXI

The vids I've found with usable clips are not the best quality, so it'd be nice if someone could upload better recordings. If not, it's not the end of the world. I don't care as much about the FMV sequences as I do about the FFT scenes.

/copypasta

Chaumel is looking into the FFXI and Warcraft 3 videos I need, so hopefully he can pull off HD well enough. If anyone here can help out with those other games, I'll guarantee you a spot in the credits.

If you want completely Off the Wall music, you should listen to JA Seazar, even if you can't understand the words, look it up. You know a song's pretty crazy when a few of the lyrics are "Stop! The egg and the bed are cheating one another!" Of course they're all in Japanese... which might make them undesirable... of course you could look up the lyrics and see how much sense those song's Don't make.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9PYf_UT ... re=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9PYf_UTg18&feature=related)
Ignore the background, it's just to give you an example of what this song sounds like, JA Seazar has many wonderous tracks. Though it seems some can't stand it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9emHbujl ... annel_page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9emHbujls_c&feature=channel_page)
Also this is one of their most famous songs, it appears.

I always appreciate music recommendations, even if I don't end up using them for this project. I'm a music fan, as you all know.

Though I'm not too keen on the stuff you just shared, Lasting Dawn.

I just can't get into a lot of Japanese stuff. I hate anime, I can't stand more than a couple seconds of anything j-pop-like, I think hentai is one of the worst things ever invented, etc etc. It's mainly just the entertainment media, sans a good number of video games, that rub me the wrong way. I have nothing against Japan, the Japanese or the fans. I just don't get the entertainment.

Take anime. The ONLY anime films I have ever enjoyed are: My Neighbor Totoro (because it's cute for the kids, and kitty buses are made of win) and Spirited Away (because I fucking HAD that dream, and I was fascinated to see that some guy on the other end of the world had it too and put it to video). That's it. Dozens of friends that I've known throughout the years have repeatedly tried--and failed--to get me to like all different sorts of anime, and I just can't. (So, in other words, don't bother trying, if that's what any of you reading this were thinking. Lolociraptor). I still to this day get in heated debates with "film critics" about the movie Kill Bill, which I HATED WITH THE FIRES OF A THOUSAND SUNS, and they loved. The only time we've ever been able to "agree to disagree" on any aspect of that movie is on the anime and anime-like elements of what they'd call "stylized action" and what I'd call "stupid." That's the one point where I stop arguing objectively and say, "Okay, well, I'm a little biased on that aspect."

I dig Chinese entertainment more. I also find Chinese history more fascinating, I love the language, the food, the mythology, the art, the music and, well, frankly, etcetera.

Fun fact: My wife has been studying Mandarin, off and on, for a couple of years now. I'm slowly picking up some of it by listening to her practice, and she regularly shouts things at me in Mandarin.. Cute things like, "I love you" or "You are a sexy husband" or "Get back to the fucking kitchen; don't make me tell you twice."

But I digress. I felt like writing out my thoughts, even though I know so many people here are going to look at this and think that
I'M THE WEIRDO..
No U

Back on topic:

I appreciate the offer, SentinalBlade, but camcorder recording is a big no no. You see, Voldemort is our Technical Advisor now, and it's his job to make sure that everything I record for the CoK meets certain HD standards. So I'd need a direct rip of the video or a damned good HD screen recording of the emulated game, which can't be done for the Wii, as far as I know. But it's a moot point now, anyways, because I won't actually need any clips from that game anymore. I've got all that I need to work with now.

I'll definitely hit you guys up again if I do need other FMV clips or something, though.

Progress has slowed quite a bit, due to certain professors on my end thinking that the beginning of the semester should be just as work-heavy as finals at the end of the semester. But I do still find some time every here and there to work on the Chronicles, and I really try to make the absolute most of the time I'm given.

All Glory to Kanbabrif

Heh, well to each their own... really that sort of music, or animation isn't really for everyone. But I do agree that hentai is a corruption of the art form. It gives a gross generalization to what should be some anime. As time has gone by, I found if difficulty to get into many of them, I think it has to have a certain theme... I love psychology and symbolism, so normally if I do watch an anime, it has to have a Lot of that, but I digress...

Is there going to be a recap of the first part with updated graphics and the like? As well as small biography (packages?) I don't know why... but I feel that would for some reason fit with the Zodiac Brave Story section, heh... rambling now.
Title:
Post by: SentinalBlade on February 10, 2009, 09:45:36 am
Sure, though i think i can probably get a direct rip if i find a video codec for them. dont hesitate to ask again :)

I find it funny, i cant stand many animes at all, but the most recent one, Gungrave, had me hooked. i meant to only watch one episode, but the first episode made me go "wtf was that?" and then the second episode really gave me an idea of what was going ot happen"basically ep 1 was in the future" and i loved it death...2 kids in a gang get all their friends killed, join the mofia, and...oh yea, no spoilers.

pfft, you know i dont like to spoil

anyways, good luck with the schooling, and the kitchen duty.

I have given some thought to redoing Part I with events and then probably HD recordings. It is definitely a long ways off though. I think it would depend on fan response to Part II.

I need some opinions on how the colors here look for a sunset setting. My main concern is the background gradient. Though I can control the tones of the map and the sprites as well.

Post by: Bastard Poetry on February 18, 2009, 05:44:00 pm
Actually, LastingDawn, we intend to use those maps to represent Zeltennia, rather than Lesalia. So, everyone reading, get used to that idea.

Zeltennia. Castle walls and shit. Zeltennia.

Let's keep it memorized, because we can't have some little company like Square confusing the matter with the names they gave their unused maps. I have decided those are Zeltennia. (And it makes sense, too, because they have red flags, and I thought I saw those same red flags draped on the walls during those "inside Zeltennia" scenes with Delita, Orlandu, Olan, etc.)

Also, news update:

Progress didn't just slow down; it came to screeching halt. My professors at school, for this particular semester, seem to have the first half of the term confused with the second half. By that I mean: they're dumping mountains of "finals-like" work on our faces like it's going out of style. Plus, a recent debilitating sickness caused me to fall behind, so I've been struggling like hell to catch up. AND, on top of it all, I've had some extremely serious drama, bullshit and health problems to deal with.

Things are already getting better, though. I caught up, for one thing. I still have a shit load of work to do, but I'm slowly finding better ways to manage my time so I can get what needs to be done done more efficiently, which in turn frees up a little bit of time to work on the Chronicles.

Also, my apologies to any and all people involved in that New Projects drama I inadvertently started last week. That was bad timing on my part, trying to express myself on minor board issues in the midst of serious IRL turmoils. Some of that shit ended up leaking through into my posts, and the whole ordeal ended up turning into something far worse then it had any right to be, and I certainly did my best to fuel that flame. I was not at my best, I don't hold any grudges against any of you, and I hope none of you hold any against me either.

/drama, for fucking ever.

This topic definitely goes through its silent phases, and real life definitely gets in our way, but rest assured that Cheetah and I are still absolutely dedicated to finishing Part II. When shit holds him back, I'm usually in a good place to get lots of work done. When shit holds me back, he similarly morphs into a super beaver--of the eager variety. (Or a nasty fucking killer Cheetah with crazy productive skillz. Either or).

That's everything in a nutshell. Time to get back to work.

All Glory to Kanbabrif

Update From the Producer:

Loyal fans of the Chronicles of Kanbabrif (COK) have been waiting very patiently with no end in site for Part II so I thought I would give you a peek into what is taking so long and a small preview with MINOR SPOILERS. This is going to be a bit lengthy for those who are dying for details, everyone else can just skip down to the link at the bottom for the preview.

First off I'm Cheetah, Bastard Poetry's partner in crime and one of my main responsibilities is pushing the quality and production value of the COK upwards. BP and I joined forces officially shortly after the release of Part I and have been working diligently on Part II ever since. You have heard a lot about the drama that has slowed progress on the project from BP, but let me tell you about the work that has been done behind the scenes.

Part I: BP did all of Part I with only minor graphic changes, save state edits, some minor hacking, and lots of video editing. Almost all the cool effects BP managed involved post production editing, the only control he had over camera and characters was in battle actions, even the text was inserted while video editing. An impressive piece of work to say the least.

Part II (pre computer theft): My main contribution to the COK was going to be graphics work. Almost all of the main characters have custom sprites, every new character has a custom portrait of some kind, and almost everyone at least has a unique palette for their sprite for Part II. BP and I also came up with ways to add more movement to the characters using video editing so that the characters wouldn't be so static. All these things can be seen in action in the super secret Scene 5 preview along with some other minor advances in hacking. Everything was going to look pretty similar to Part I, just a little smoother and with custom graphics. Part II was actually very very close to being produced using these methods and before the computer theft almost a third of Part II had already been completed.

Part II (post computer theft): With the lost of BP's computer essentially all recording and editing up to that point had been lost, along with the means of recording an editing more (aka "COK Crisis 2008"). BP was forced to take an extended break and recording was put on hold, however the hacking community continued to make advances and I continued to scheme. Shortly after the COK Crisis, editing story events in FFT became possible. This opened a whole new arena for story telling and I immediately set about seeing if it could be integrated into the Chronicles. Using event editing we now have control over camera angles, in game custom animations, total character control, in game text bubbles, weather control, and battle flow. Along with the jump to HD and more advances in general hacking the quality of Part II has made a huge leap forward. This makes the whole process a bit more labor intensive, but I think the results speak for themselves.

The preview that follows is the opening of Scene 5 done using only event editing, no video editing at all. Note that this is choppy and the sound is messed up due to my computer and in no way indicates the visual quality of the final product. Only minor spoilers are contained and much of the dialog is a place holder.

I watched all the events and I'll bring those points to fix:

- Philsov rotates too fast to look at Fanatic.
- BP and Chaumel should have a UnitAnim x02 after you make them appear on the screen.
- You should switch to a battle song when those two appear.
- When Philsov says "..." his name should appear too. Currently the window is very small and it doesn't look very good.

Also as CoK is a video project, you might want to prioritize the {close} function.
Use it instead of {end} to have a determined length.
If you're supposed to flip pages manually, just use a Wait and ChangeDialog; I forgot to rename it so it's still CloseDialog in the new CONFIG.INI,

I liked the darkened screen, philsov walking back, and of course Fanatic's threat.

That was very well described, Cheetah.

A few people have been given behind-the-scenes access to the work we've done, including our VIP Piercewise, our Associate Producer Lasting Dawn (Cheetah's event-editing assistant) and our Technical Adviser Voldemort, whose main purpose is to make sure that my recording work is done in the absolute best HD quality possible.

Now that we're pushing forward with so many greater and newer ideas, rest assured that Part II is going to knock some socks off. I know that a good number of you are avoiding spoilers at this point, so continue to avoid these things that we share with you to the best of your abilities if you truly want Part II to be a completely fresh experience for you when it's released.

However, don't feel bad if curiosity gets the best of you. Know that we have a lot of surprises in store for you guys in Part II, and the few things we've revealed merely scratch the surface.

With that said..

You guys know that I'm absolutely terrible about keeping "secret scenes" to myself. Once we have something that looks great, I can't wait to share it with you guys. Mr. Quick is a good example of this; my original goal was to keep his existence secretive.. but I just couldn't help but put a quote of his in my sig.

So, I'd like to also share this, to show off the new HD standards:

Intro to Scene 6
http://www.museofoblivion.com/Scene6_HD720.html (http://www.museofoblivion.com/Scene6_HD720.html)

It's just an FMV sequence to "build up" to a big scene, and then it shows a couple of quick pics (not finalized, at all) of the battle, and goes black for a few minutes (just to play a little more of the music). Unfortunately, the cost of HD is looonnggg buffering time. Be patient. It won't play until the whole video is buffered, so set it to buffer, go do something else for awhile and come back to it later.

The good news is: you'll find that it loads instantly every time you come back to it, once you've buffered it once.

Enjoy!

@Zodiac
The music doesn't matter, actually. I intend to give the scenes an entirely different soundtrack.

Good feedback! I don't understand event editing all that well, but I can definitely understand the points you made, and they sound ideal.

Also, would it be possible to put the character portraits in all of the dialogue boxes? Cheetah, I still haven't started with my formatting work on the script yet, so let me know how portraits would effect the size of the boxes.

Post by: Bastard Poetry on March 04, 2009, 11:34:11 pm
Oh, and I keep forgetting to reply to you, Voldemort:

I really appreciate the offer. As it currently stands, we don't really need any extra help on Part II. We have everything we need, it's just a matter of getting it done, and the time it would take to catch someone up to speed would slow everything down more.

If I had to guess, I'd say that this summer will possibly be the time we start work on Part III, and we intend to start recruiting new people for the work. I'm not going to make any promises, and we're certainly not ready to begin discussing it in depth now, but Cheetah and I have examined some potential candidates, if they're up to the task.

Oh hell, I'll just throw out a few names, so they can start thinking about it in the meantime:

Kokojo (Event Editing) w/ Cheetah
Philsov (Mechanics and Battle Choreography) w/ BP
Voldemort (Mechanics and Filming) w/ BP
Kuraudo Sutoraifu (Graphic Design) w/ Junk & BP
Junk the Monk (Graphic Design) w/ KS & BP

Junk, by the way, is my friend and coworker here in Fort Collins. He and I have been discussing alternative animation work, since I'm tired of using FMVs from other games.

If anyone out there is capable of doing some kick-ass graphic design stuff, don't be shy when the time comes to start forming the production team for Part III.

But, as I've said, Part II is in the bag. Cheetah and I just need our fans to be patient with the fact that our lives are busy busy busy.

That is actually only the first 1/3rd of the track. It's ~14 minutes long, and it will span the entirety of Scenes 6, 7 and 8.

It's the instrumental version of "The Poet and the Pendulum" by Nightwish.

I'm not a huge fan of their new singer, but I'm absolutely in love with the BONUS Instrumental Version of their newest album, Dark Passion Play.

So everyone remembers that great sunset background and coloring I had going in that one shot right? Well turns out that once any spell or skill is used that changes the background/field color my event instruction changes to the map up and disappear. So I had to go in an actually edit the map using Gomtuu's map editing programs, not easy and very very confusing. So after about a week of trying to get this to look right this is what I have achieved with just map editing:

Okay, so let it be known that this project is still going and that BP and I are taking time to work on this during our busy schedules. This has been such a long process for Part II that I don't think a lot of people even know about this project or the work done on it so I thought I would bring it to all our new member's attention. Especially those that are going "Bastard Poetry who?" "Kanbabrif what?". There might be a few frames of character animation that I might need help with so anyone who is interested should speak up now. Oh and watch Part I.

I've been thinking lately, and I have decided to make Scene 5 public now. Just a little something to hold people over until we finish.

Keep in mind that this was the only completed scene I had made last year before my laptop was stolen and we were forced to start all over. In the months following the theft, Cheetah and I made a lot of decisions to increase the overall quality of the entire production, so this is not representative of the final product.

However, this scene will still go down in very similar ways. This is the video that a dozen or so people were given behind-the-scenes access to, and it reveals a few new characters, including my personal favorite.

Note that it has to be viewed in HD quality in order to read the text.

***NEWS UPDATE***

I've been thinking, all this time, that the release of Part II is going to be determined by Cheetah's haxwork, my writing/directing/editing and a lot of patience from everyone involved and/or waiting. Yet it occurs to me now, as I'm feeling sleep medication kick in right before calling it a night (this is the fun part, where my depth perception starts playing badminton with my cataracts, my feet stomp on stairs that had seemed further away just a moment before and my incoherent-yet-utterly-magical words suddenly have the power to type themselves onto the screen via the mystic dark art of tapping my nose with each syllable), that it'd be nice to have a third hand over here. For the Chronicles, I mean; not my nose.

The Muse of Oblivion is NOW HIRING for a production assistant!

Applicants must have full working knowledge of:

FFTPatcher - specifically ENTD
FFT Game Mechanics
Battle Flow / CT System
Animation (simple gif stuff or advanced flash.. doesn't matter. Bring what you've got. If you don't got, than expect grueling grunt work using my archaic methods)

Note that Event Editing and ASM Hacking are wonderful perks, but not necessary. Cheetah's got his work, and he has his support network, so that'd be up to him if he ever decides to recruit help in the production department. Technically, I'm looking to hire a DIRECTOR'S ASSISTANT.

Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Filling my coffee mug
Gathering HD quality FMV sequences from other media sources that match criteria I provide
Setting up, testing and executing flawless battle choreography (pre-filming)
Fanning me with a giant feather or something
Keeping a written log of your work
Organizing and implementing ENTD changes in custom Events (per instructions by Cheetah)
Pick grandma up from the home (farm?) and buy groceries

In a nutshell, organization is everything. A large part of the massive setbacks I've endured have been the result of irl stuff--work and school--making it difficult to build up the ambition to keep certain things organized.

Don't expect too much (or too little work). I like to believe I have this all under wraps, but I need to know there's one person I can count on to take care of some work for me, from time to time, when I need it most. Will that person be you!?!?!? MAYBE.

For all we know, I may read this tomorrow, read over all of the responses, pull out a sheet of paper, write "don't post whenst sleep med'd" and staple it to my forehead and forget the whole thing.

Hmm.. Perhaps now's your chance to post something brilliant enough to keep me in this frame of mind.

In a short essay or something, explain why you are the most qualified for the position.

Aaaaaannnnnnddddd..... ...... ...... go.

EDIT: CLOSED. Thanks go to all applicants.

Post by: Cheetah on December 19, 2010, 09:51:50 pm
So this project is so old that many of the current members might not even know about it. This is a fan movie, not a patch. After lots of on and off work for the past year or two I am finally admitting that I may need some help with event editing to actually get this done anytime in the near future. So Part I of the Chronicles of Kanbabrif was done mostly with video editing and photoshop. Part II that I and BP have been working on is done almost entirely with event editing. Resulting in higher quality video and smoother animation overall. The problem is that both Bastard Poetry and I have very high standards for this project, so too see if there are even any willing and capable event editors out there I am holding a very small contest of sorts.

Your assignment if you choose to accept it:

Code an event representing the 2nd scene of Part 1 of CoK, see video link below. The only required sprites are Reis and any squire palette to represent Hamwitch. All movements represented in the original and dialog most be present. Note that how well you do the formatting for the text will be a consideration for your ability to complete this task. Added flare, that doesn't deviate from the script, such as added character animations or even evtchr additions are welcome but not necessary. Ultimately the hackers ability to produce a clean and smooth event with good coding will be the main measure of quality. If you make a submission please post a youtube video, or send me the relevant files and I will make one for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10DRkkN8eaw&feature=player_detailpage#t=308s

If nothing else this is a great opportunity to show off your skills or a chance to learn and get advice from folks working on a common project.

Attention Cheetah...I want to introduce myself.  I am new to the community (check out that post count!) but have been lurking since December when I first discovered 1.3.  I finished my 1.3 playthough a few weeks ago and the entire experience was so rewarding that it inspired me to learn event editing.  I did a lot of reading on the forum and with the help of Kokojo and his Event Editing Tutorial I was able to make a custom event replacing the opening Orbonne Monastery event.

I learned an awful lot making that first tuturial, and when I saw this thread I figured I'd give this a shot.  I still have to watch all of the Chronicles, but from what I've seen so far it's pretty awesome stuff.  I don't have much editing experience but I do really enjoy learning how to do this.  I've attached PPF files of both the Tutorial event I made based on Kokojo's tutorial as well as a PPF recreating the Finath River scene from the Chronicles.  There are some very minor changes I made to the script (ellipsis dots replacing dashes) to help it flow better in the game's dialog boxes.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out so I'm excited to see what you think.  If you like it I am interested in helping out with other event edits you and BP may need on this project.  I probably have a few hours a week I can devote to this kind of thing, so it might be a little slow, but I did make this Finath scene in about a week totaling maybe 12 hours of work.  Working on this kind of thing is something I enjoy to unwind after work or on a rainy day.

Please take a look and give me some feedback - I am very new to this but I'm excited to learn.  On both PPFs the opening Orbonne event is replaced, so you get right to the new event.

Thanks!

Chad

Chad, I will look at these in a few days. I am very excited to see what you came up with. I will give you a nice long response after I see these.

So...CoK is still in progress?

OK, I've patched it and played it. All I have to say is... amazing. Absolutely wonderful. The event itself works perfectly and the scripting is great. I would probably have chosen different music, but that's easily changed and not important at all in the grand scheme of things. I've linked this to BP for him to review as well. Again, very nice work, especially with this being your first event edit!

Thanks Eternal!

Regarding the music I just picked this one since it seemed to have the appropriate sense of urgency for Hamwitch chasing down Reis on the run.  But I assumed that if it were to be used for the actual Chronicles Cheetah and BP would still dub over using the medieval theme in the current video...in fact in that case maybe this event should be made with no music at all.

Wow Chad, these are very well done for a first time go.

Would you mind if I uploaded these to my Youtube account for everyone to enjoy? I already recorded them so Bastard Poetry and I could discuss them.

As far as critic, there is very little.  The main issue with Finath River is the camera. It is zoomed out, which as a rule should never be done, so the sprites look wonky. Also the camera isn't centered very well, so there is a lot of negative space and the dialog boxes don't fit on the screen well. However, did you do these things on purpose to better match the original scene?

Regardless the rest of it was good. Obviously your Tech Demo was superior in showing off the skills you have learned.  Nice use of effects and camera moves, that can be some tough stuff.

Bottom line is that I am loving this stuff and quite frankly you are prompting Bastard Poetry and I to make a plan. Though if you are really ambitious, I would say that you are very save to give the Riovanes Castle scene a shot. I would say Grog Hill, but I have already done most of that. BP and I should be getting in contact with you in the next few days to get a better feel for who the mysterious Chad is and how you want to contribute to the team.

Thanks Cheetah.  I actually did zoom the camera out to try to match the original scene, but that could be easily fixed.  I actually started at normal zoom but thought the 3/4 was what might have been used in the CoK video.  Of course, we can't have "wonky" sprites in a high-quality production like the Chronicles.

Feel free to make a video and post it on Youtube.

Well here are the vids. Let me know if you want the titles of descriptions changed to something else Chad, I just threw these together really quick.

Adjusting it to normal zoom would be great. Also in this recording you might notice one point where there is a dialog error where the camera moves before the dialog disappears. Making the box move across the screen oddly. I didn't notice it the first time because I was clicking through the dialog too quickly.

Now everyone can see how awesome these are.

Cheetah,

Here is a ppf with the zoom back to normal.  I also fixed the moving text box glitch and made some minor adjustments to the early camera moves to better keep the moving sprites in the center of the action.

Hey, can someone explain to me exactly what this is? Is this basically a patch picking up where the story left off? I just watched a few of the videos and I'm interested to find out.

Ummm, the Chronicles is kind of hard to explain. It is basically a huge inside joke film based around the FFT GameFAQS community even before FFH.

Chad: I will check out the updates, I'm looking forward to them. I'm sending you a PM later tonight.

So Chad has officially joined the team and progress is finally being made on the Chronicles of Kanbabrif. Things will be quite here once again as we do our work internally, but I will try to give you all regular updates so that you know the project is alive and well.
