Welcome everyone to the second ever FFT Arena Single Class Challenge Tournament, where we have a 28 player roster! To bring everyone up to speed this is double elimination. If you win in your match, good job. If you lose once, don't despair there's time to make a recovery in the loser's bracket. Everyone good luck and have fun! As Mills Lane would say: LET'S GET IT ON!!

Just as a small recommendation, it would be helpful if players were categorized by which class they are representing. Even something as small as a 2~3 letter code in each spoiler description would be lovely.
A lot of the submitted units look very fun. TrueLight is running a dedicated two-swords wizard! I expect great things.

My money is on Barren. It has been since I found out he got Archers (since I figured a SCC Archer team is the best class to have besides maybe Thief since they are the only two teams IMO that are able to stand a chance with regular arena rules as a SCC team.With DomieVs FamousKnights as the other exception I've seen :P) and is reinforced after seeing his team.

Okay i am good.... i just finished doing my tests and setting up my system... thankfully i found my PVR in the disaster of my room so i will be using that instead... means i won't be recording at ~15fps but full speed like i hoped... just got to remember that my PVR likes to have a 1 second delay on audio that i need to fix in post... but anywho... i am ready to record when i need to!

Hey wait a second, I just noticed something. The master guide says bards can't equip robes. What's going on with that? I don't mean to sound accusatory or anything, it's just a thing I noticed and wanted to mention before the first match.

Anyway, I've got Paladins or Ninjas to be concerned with... For some odd reason, I'm rooting for DomieV's Paladins... (Might be a speed thing.)
I've got my recording ready to go. Hopefully I won't have to sneak out to a local church or something to record my commentary.

It may have been initially an oversight on my part but for the sake of not wasting anymore time with the edits, I'll let it slide for this one. However if Andante wants to make the corrections then he is allowed to. He just has to PM CT5Holy about it in case he has to do the match over. And PM me so I'll make the corrections
Next update to the mem card generator should have that correction for the next patch. Hopefully FFMaster can also fix the error with the phoenix blade I'm sure you guys are aware of

IMO bards should be able to equip robes anyways. I've made that mistake my self a few times making bard units then realizing they can't wear robes (usually black robe, since I try to make them casters often) then I scrap the unit because it loses it's punch.

Bards have the punch of a Wizard, but with the HP of a middleweight, and the PA to deal some serious Counter Flood damage. I always figured that the lack of an MP pool from robes is meant to counterbalance these advantages.

That was always my take on it too. If Bards have access to Robes then it makes the Wizard Class completely irrelevant.

True. But it gives the option of having an effective male caster. Does not make wizard irrelevant because you never ever see male wizards. Wizards are strictly 99.9% of the time, a female unit. It does make bards slightly OP but the gender difference makes it balanced IMO.

Agreed. Bards have high MA and with innate access to Angel Song, even have an MP replenishment method which Scholars and Wizards don't. In fact, I personally have asked about this mem card glitch before and was told by a veteran player that they were specifically left off bards to avoid them from being OP.
I hate to be the odd one out here, but I would ask the team does get edited. Equipment struggles are a part of the challenge. I don't just ask this since I personally had the challenge of creating an all monk team which has severe weapon and headgear restrictions when needing to choose unique items, nor do I ask this because Andante was the last winner. I would ask the same of any player.
I more ask this since everyone has done at least some work putting a team together. If Andante wins, you may think "It is because he was allowed to have robes." If he doesn't, he may think, "Maybe if I had not had robes, I would have changed this or that and done better." I don't want anyone to feel they had a false sense of victory or defeat (and I'm aware that it's not a huge competition: still, some people put a lot of effort in and want to know they at least have it the best they could come up with and they weren't beaten by a glitch.)
I will stand by whatever decision is made, but just throwing my two cents in.

100% agreed, Silentkaster. I just didn't want to be the first one to point it out.
His team is against the rules. 3/4 of units are impossible to recreate because of equip choices. If it were maybe 1 unit, ok let it slide. His team allows 3 units to equip items they shouldn't.
If 3 of my samurais were wearing clothes for example (which would have been severely helpful..) I think people would complain. Samurais can't wear clothes, only robes and armor, so why would I be able to get away with it on 75% of my team allowing unequipable items? No hostility of course, it's just like SK said. If he wins, "it's cause of the robes", if he loses "it's cause of the robes". Put his match on hold, give him ~5 days to re-create a team (sorry) and then re-record the match. It's only fair.
edit: @Barren, 'TeamPlayer' is still supposed to have Cure 3 on her white magic skill set. Thanks.

The last version of the team I sent to you had it, but when you re-sent the team back to me after making edits (and making it look pretty with the breaks ============= in it) and I just made my edits off that version, and that version did not have Cure 3 for whatever reason, and was not intended.
And awesome. I'm really glad he decided to fix it. That makes things more fair all around simply because no-one can use the "it's because of the robes" excuse for however the match turns out.

Yea true. Then again it would have been a interesting discussion had it stayed. Would bards benefit or hinder from robes due to lower HP but more MP? But that's for another time I suppose. Andante I'm sure already told CT5Holy about the changes so I'm sure he caught on.

Yes if you copy the team sent to you you can click on import and you paste it. And as long as the mem card generator reads the abilities correctly it won't give you an error message. For example if someone sent a team and put down "All Items" then the mem card generator would think its an error because you're not specific on what items you have. That's why when you submit a team with item as secondary, you got to put in x-potion, ether, antidote, etc. Otherwise you have to manually click on the item in mind in order for it to be flagged for the AI to know.

I've been manually inputting teams by typing out everything and clicking the individual skills every single time. Holy crap that makes life much easier.
Which is why when I or someone else puts say "All Items", "All Geomancy", it wasn't an issue since I knew that just means click every skill. Makes sense now why it's so important about spelling errors when posting a team. I never understood since if it was misspelled in their team, I still knew the correct spelling when inputting.
And Barren, your post above that one, I believe is mis-quoted. You're talking about bards but quoted the post where I was talking about Cure 3 getting lost between our messages.

Great first matchup. The Iga + Koga Knife combo did scary damage. Flee + Berserk was awesome on DomieV's part as well. But those ninjas kept hammering away! The over 400 HP healing was awesome triggering Dragon Sprit. GG Both of you!
Skiploom wins! Hooray for the underdog! But credit to Anima Zero for using his lancers effectively. Reraises were everywhere but so was refute and holy. Good job Skiploom!
This was one hell of a nail biter. I was so nervous for TrueLight in round 3 because of the statuses. His wizards tried their damn hardest but Gaignun showed everyone how underrated time mages can be as a team. Those last few moments were intense. GG Both of you! Awesome match!

Well that sucked....for me. Still have to gave Jumza credit for the strong AoE assault he laid on me. Wished I had better luck than what the RNG gave me but overall I think I hung in there. Soo close...the final sequences of round 3 were heartbreaking to watch. Time Mage double turns my Wizard, puts him to Sleep, and then the missed Revive along with Berserk/Death Sentence to seal my fate. At least he got one attack in before biting the dust. GG Gaignun. Your fast and annoying Time Mages are going to be a handful to deal with.

Ninja vs Paladin Melee vs Melee. Vigilanti has better melee units and superior offensive options due to base movement and speed. Betting on DomieV since I want Paladins to go far in this tournament. That berserk paladin is one of the best paladin builds I've seen since Truelight's white magic paladin.
R1 - EZ R2 - Much better round for Vigilanti. Didn't get one shotted and exploited DomieV's weak recovery. R3 - The dream is dead.

Good match! I was scared of that summon magic bard and also the lore one. That Odin in round one had me worried for a second, but high magic evade and HP totals definitely earned me round two. I think I might have also gotten a little lucky with the stop procs and that triple kill.
By the way, my unit probably moved but didn't act that one time because he had a giant axe and I think three of Andante's bards had earth absorb. So my unit could do literally nothing to him since he doesn't have any offensive skills besides grand cross. I think that's a fundamental flaw in the design of my team, so I'll have to see how I perform in the next round.

Wow, I did it. I always thought I was cursed with Round 1 defeats. This match proved otherwise. Finally breaking that curse is the best feeling ever. Finally in all my attempts at Arena, something turned out right.
When Round 1 ended during the half of the video (yeah I look at the video time, spoiling the surprise sorry lol). I thought it was over for me. If one round took that long and Anima Zero took it then it's safe to assume that Round 2 can also play out that long with the same winner 2-0. But was I in for a surprise. It didn't end up like I thought it would (Epic loss on the face). I was on the edge of my seat during the last round. I was so scared by that Lancer triggering HP Restore. The suspense was too much! Thank you Anima Zero for giving me a match I'll remember. While you may be the only Lancer team in the Tourney, it's definitely a great build. Represent the Lancers and keep it alive!

Gaignun, I just wanted to say that I am a big fan of your builds. The team you made way back then with that Zombie/Raise2 Oracle, Chiri Geomancer, Blast Gun Chemist, and The Holy Bard continues to blow me away with just how versatile they are on EVERYTHING they are up against! That team is really an inspiration to me.
And now that I'll be facing you in Round 2 is both exciting and scary. I know what you're capable of. Never in my wildest dreams would I think I'd get the chance to have a match with you. I'll give it my best out there!

I was worried going into that b/c I did a practice run on my own. And.... it did not go very well (charm did land on my run and also white magic bard ate that holy instead of the time bard). Oddly that beginning haste 2 also didn't go off in my practice run too, I wonder if he's targeting the panel or something. I think I pretty much had to take the first 2 rounds b/c that 3rd round map would have been bad for me (isolated units...) your priests pick my units off via holy on that map. FYI that other priest does 400+ damage with holy as well on my units. I threw asura on there for smart targeting anti-sandbag and fire weakness exploits.

Vigilanti healing with Iga and Koga knives and triggering Dragon Spirit at the same time is very creative. This helps get around Ninjas' poor defensive options.
DomieV's Moonlight paladin is extremely clever, too. I never would have thought Flee has a useful purpose. With Flee, putting DomieV's Moonlight paladin into critical only makes him angrier. It's a shame Moonlight's proc chance is so low, though, given how difficult it is to sustain melee offense at low HP.
Congratulations to Skiploom on your victory! Both teams get stronger over time, so I wasn't sure who would win this match. I think that all of Skiploom's EV-piercing weapons and abilities are what determined the outcome. And, of course, White Magic.
The last match was full-blown retarded. The last-surviving time mage, helpless and without MP, cowers in a corner from the berserk wizard, then the wizard keels over and dies. If that Death Sentence didn't land, I would have lost.
Oh man. CT5Holy fairly criticizes Krypt's male Oracles for having low-Faith magic, then three of their spells land in a row to seal victory in round 3. How did the humble pie taste, CT5Holy?
My condolences, reinoe. Your loss to Krypt reminded me of mine to you in season 2.
As archers, Barren's team unfortunately lacked the healing to withstand Jumza's AoE damage.
That Atheist Bow is a formidable weapon, though. There's nothing quite like crippling a mage's entire arsenal with a single arrow. In fact, there are currently no counters to Innocent (other than one's own death), just as there were no counters to Berserk when Wiz submitted his tanky Mediator/Thief team in season 1. There are two items with Innocent resistance, but they are both in the armor class, which mages do not have access to. I am fine with Athiest Bow serving as a mage's bane, but, nevertheless, it might be prudent to either shorten Innocent's duration, or at least introduce a skill that cleanses it (perhaps on the redesigned Scholars).
That 250 damage Odin spell was insane! But then the Bards succumb to relentless AoE draw out.
I hope we can see more crazy summon damage in the losers bracket.

Round 1 was quite long and it dragged on for a while but TrueLight's wizards prevailed due to AoE and were more resilient than they seemed. Round 2 was TrueLight's match all the way due to the lancers being bunched up together. GG Both of you. The year of the lancers will have to wait another time
So far I am glad my arches can do something. Charm got me in round 1 but things went my way thankfully in rounds 2 & 3. Nice to see jumping archer and nice to see my units being able to spread out which is actually their strength. GG Andante49. your bards were something else and there's a reason why you were the season 4 champ. Hopefully my road to redemption will continue

Also your comment about my archer standing on top of that boat, it was pretty cute. I chuckled. That made me feel better about my winner's bracket loss. Archers aren't really the best SCC class because of limited sandbag options. Low MA and Low MP doesn't really help. At least Paladins has access to robes and samurais have much better MA to use. Next time I enter a SCC tourney I'm avoiding archers if possible

My shifts were switched this morning. I had to come in at 8 so I haven't recorded yet.
I'll be off in a few hours and then have tomorrow morning off. So I should have everything done by Friday morning before work. Coro, if you have everything fixed and want to go for more feel free.
For Match #1 I thought those Paladins would carry it after round one, but the short engagement distance let the ninja work that dual wield. The knifes also helped mitigate the damage split.

I think all the data from the tourneys can be very helpful. Looking at items and moves that are not used at all, or very rarely used, vs items and abilities that are used way more often. There should be more of a balance and variety with the sheer amount of possibilities we have with different unit builds, so maybe some of these lesser used reactions/skills/equips and even classes may be in need of a buff, or some stuff may need a slight nerf. Or both. Just to add more flavor to Arena. I'm excited to see how this tourney turns out.

I was wary of the matchup at first. Lancers have the ability to dodge magic and redirect spells with their jumps. Looks like my team pulled through in the end. Overall, a nice back and forth match. GG.

This is super late but,
Earth Scholars vs Archers who should be able to counter everything
I was not excited about facing you first round, not only do 2 of your units have earth absorb, but one has an atheist bow as well, plus a jumper who might be able to avoid spells (though he didnt end up doing so, guess the timing was off for you). Yikes.
Luckily, i learned from my old earth absorb team that you do need other sources of damage, so i brought holy and chiri along. Pokes were surprisingly strong and useful as well, which i totally did not foresee :P You did have awful luck with the rng in both rounds though.

Great job on everything Barren, CT5holy, corosar and andante, you guys got this all down to a science. Thanks to you too, gaigun, your stats were very thurough and neat. Feel a bit overwhelmed by all the videos and balance discussion stuff going on, so I'll keep it brief. Will say "I have never seen someone get 6 predictions wrong in a row" but hey, statistics!
I didn't want to face you or your brother so early (and isn't fdquinn your niece too? do I gotta fight your whole family?!) I love watching you guys in action and it puts me in the awkward position of rooting for you guys but also not wanting to die. Really wish we could see more from you, redworld. 40 faith oracles wrecked me. GG. Too much status even with having status protection on most of my team. I thought Dont Act would be pretty prevalent in this tournament and I decided to go with Cross Helmet over a Crystal Helmet on 'AmazonChick', my lore using samurai. Bad call, but I hope I can maybe turn things around in the losers bracket and get a couple wins from this team. I did a lot of work on them and really struggled trying to put together something special using 4 samurais. There was a lot of editing of units/skills/abilities between me and Barren before settling on this version of the team and they still just fell short but I digress. Congrats Krypt!

Well no one can really predict how it will go. My archers looked good in paper but against a team that kept stacking up faith I was little to no match for.
Geomancer seem to have it good considering how versatile they are as MA unts. They even have sandbagging capabilities like priests or summoners do

Is it possible to forfeit against Mudvayne? I don't want to see my team beat his and lose in R3 being incomplete and all. If it is then I'll forfeit against Mudvayne since it's a ditto and I'd prefer for his team to advance since it's probably better for the class.

I was really concerned as CT started pointing out my flaws in the pregame. I also saw Vig crush DomieV in their last match. So, I was expecting this to go the opposite direction for sure. In my (short) Defense, of Comet. It was there for the guaranteed kill, if someone brought various elemental resistances. Celes earned her keep on my team. Thanks CT for the record and GG to Vigilanti.

Well, only reason I got R1 was the bottleneck I think. The other two rounds Reks pounded me. R2 rout into R3 awesomeness (Southern Cross to save the Squire + kill my Priest, then Balance that went off right after the Holy!). Couldn't help but smile, it was that sweet.

Sometimes I feel like the AI just "knows" when it's gonna hit through an evade or get a crit or status proc. Maybe it's like a probability or card counting thing like at a casino. Bad luck on that 3rd map it's just set up for the thieves to get blasted via aoe. We didn't to see it here but the ai can make some killer shots off of reflect. AI would be very good at the basketball game of "h.o.r.s.e" or "p.i.g"

Honestly? I'd prefer you didn't withdrawal. 'Unfinished' team or not, if you happen to beat me, you beat me. I'm not sure how much farther your team can go, but if you beat my team then I likely wouldn't be advancing much more anyways. Maybe it sounds selfish, but even if you think I will win easily (which I don't necessarily think that) I'd still like to see the victory after my R1 loss. It'd be nice to see my team perform [well]. :oops: :P

Okay just rendering out the videos.... i wanna get them out tonight so... i won't be putting music in this time... but for some reason because of my computer needing to be reformatted... the vids are all sycned and better running too... so... there is a small treat for everyone... i think... anywho still recorded at 640x480 but that should not be too much of an issue...
Also match #5 may have some graphic glitches... should not be too terribad... i hope i noticed my recording hardware was having a hard time rendering it studdering a bit and such... i think i have it fixed for the other two matches though.

I wasn't too worried about this match even though one of the summoners had earth absorb, because summoners really need a buff, and scholars are really strong. In the second round I thought that I'd lose because everyone was bunched together and the summoners have huge aoe, but my guys managed to beat them down quickly.

Speculation: I will lose my next match no matter who I face. I've come up against a single Bizen Boat user and lost, Mudvayne has two and Shintroy has one. Ah well. I think Shintroy should be able to withdraw but if you're afraid you have the better team and will win, what's the problem with staying in?

No shintroy because we are trying to avoid byes as much as possible. And besides if you win then back out it would disrupt the flow of the matches needed to be recorded. I'm sorry if that comes off wrong for you but you got to keep going until you get beat. Plus also it wouldn't be fair because if you beat mudvayne then leave as he takes your spot it wouldn't be fair to anyone else who hasnt been eliminated yet or already has to get that kind of special treatment. Everyone who entered knows the rules going into it. With that said...
That was nerve wracking for me. Charm in Round 1 saved you big time. And just like with Andante I got the better end of things in rounds 2 & 3. I was worried about my Archer jumping on my charmed unit when a simple gun shot would have been the better solution but thankfully innocent helped me preventing you from raising your priests. GG CT5Holy. I get revenge from season 4.

Yeah, Sorry Corosar, it was a good run, you need some more sustain in some form. I liked the theme of the ladies, but you needed another support secondary. Or, Draw Out instead. My computer crashed halfway through the first match last night. (Literally my daughter knocked the laptop on the floor). However, it opened the exact same way with the Evasion black Mage running out front and soaking up attacks like water.
Your second fight could have gone either way if you packed a bit more non-evade able summons on everyone. But that revival loop spelt doom. I see potential though. And for a first SCC run you did well.

Each unit had a theme to it...
Flarebolt had the focus of absorbing and dealing out damage through fire and lightning... by calculation... she would have done more damage through physical attacks not through the spells... had fairy moogle carbunkle
Aquaglaze has the focus of absorbing and dealing damage out through water and ice... had moogle fairy carbunkle
Stygios was originally meant to focus on absorbing and dealing damage through darkness and apply debuffs.. i was stuck between using oracles for debuffs as i consider them anti healing and would fit the theme or using timemage for the demi's which i felt would maybe have been a better choice for countering... he was the only one without revives...

Theming is fine and all, but don't forget that effectiveness doesn't always go hand in hand with that

I have a friend that still plays Pokemon TCG and has done well enough to get byes for Nationals on bent themes. (The Meta usually destroys themes. To get byes you must play 1st in your region.)

Draw Out Wizard MVP. Dodging all those Petrifys and pulling off those clutch Bizen Boats. Thank you awesome magic evasion. I think what got me the win in round one was her having 9 speed while both of the male Summoners had 8. That slight advantage along with Haste got me a few extra turns in. Good game Corosar.

^^ a lot of it is also due to map layout/match ups/luck and other variants. Sometimes the tournament champ would have easily lost to some of the teams that got bumped out on the first 2 rounds of the tournament. It just didn't happen b/c they got lucky enough not to have to face that squad.

@ Dragonblade. You needed better healing. Martial Arts and a PA based Archer, or Draw Out. White Magic was a good choice but needed the MA to make it happen.
A Equip Sword, Draw Out Archer. Add Abandon and Move HP Up, or Teleport. Then Go for Runeblade, Holy Miter, Wizard Outfit. Diamond Armlet for Slow Protection or Red Shoes. I forget if Archers have shields...

I think the white archer could have used more healing/buffs, I think most of the protect/shells would have landed and wall is always 100%. Archer's have shields but can't be used with the normal bows, just some of the guns and all x-bows except gassy iirc. Also I think coverfire would have provided some AoE help (2-4 times hitting up to 5 units (if they're in the damage panel), so I think you're archer's would have hit between 80~120~160 damage, also I believe coverfire is independent of brave values. But not sure if if the ai would ignore like the silver bow idea in favor of coverfire, so maybe it might disrupt the theme.
I think for the steal unit maybe speed ruin over quickening or maybe some time magic instead for more variety (can haste/slow, disrupt spells with sinkhole, cause stat-personally i feel stop is more devastating than charm and hit more units, charm is easier to fix imo (heal/stigma/esuna/throw stone/any attack/ damage split), don't move would keep the enemy stuck while archer's pick em off form range. You would lose steal accessory but comet can bypass damage absorption/immunity coming from accessories.

As for my own team, I'd wanted something all around with Dark. Mira was given an Ultima Weapon to prove it can still be useful, even if not used for the proc's damage, or at least to show the proc needs to be 50%.
But as with all Squires, they can only do one job well, so I was forced to cut out the White Magic Squire in favor of Towa, since I needed a non-gimmick damage dealer.
So going up against a high damage team or one that uses status will be a hard counter to me.

Stygios was a play on the word stygian which means of the river styx... the river in greek mythology which you have to pay to be ferried across when you die. i didn't expect many to pick up on it ... but it was meant to be a reference to pure darkness

From what I can tell I need to win the first round against you or I'm in trouble. Because that 2nd map is a mess for me.

I built my team to counter TM/Oracles in the reaction department. The summoners and black magic returns were seen as gravy with the MA Up. Sorry Gaignun, though that first match had me biting my nails the whole second and third. Wish you luck in the LB

To be honest, I was a little scared of those oracles given their track record so far, but we managed to avoid the RNG assault I guess. And we didn't even need Bizen Boat this time. GG Krypt, and best of luck to you in the loser's bracket.
It's stuff like this that made me decide to go with an evade based team instead of all out damage. I just saw that most skills were evadable, and pitting my teams against those sample SCC teams made me see that evasion was a very powerful thing (which is also why I decided on concentrate instead of attack up).
Oh boy, all of that juicy counter magic action. And after seeing yet another bizen boat cripple a mage team, I'm starting to think that bizen boat may actually be kind of broken. That match was really intense, and I'm looking forward to the epic geomancer vs. geomancer showdown.
By the way, I think status effect using teams will take the tournament because let's face it, if something can happen, it eventually will.

Krypt, your Oracles had scared me as a possible opponent, I was lacking the aforementioned, M-Evade. I'll be interested to see how the losers bracket tackles the low Faith Team. DW, your high evasion team is well built. I'll just have to hope Alexi ties up your GC Geo, and drop the draw out bot early. No one on your team eats Holy, but I doubt it will land.

The only way I was getting by was with some fortuitous spells. It got me through R1, but by R3 my luck had run out. Counter Magic and Counter Flood use the Time Mages' speed against them, and unfortunately for me, Geomancers are capable of using both.
Congratulations gatebuster. Yours was the better team.
I was hoping for another marvelous display of Petrify, but alas Lady Luck forgot to tune in this time. M-EV is so effective against Yin Yang Magic. Krypt would have needed reliable secondaries like Summon Magic to punch through all of dw6561's evasion and healing.

However Reks has his heavy hitter eating up low HP teams. That Ultima Proc doesn't do alot. (So I'll agree, that either it needs a formula change or a increase in proc rate.)

Damn I knew I was in trouble if I didn't land that first match. That 2nd round is just too CQC for my squad with those male squires , my bards need to have a lot of things to go right to win that 2nd map. I think this match up showed the mistake of going with auto potion over abandon on that DO bard also. I think I should swapped the rings on the summon and white magic bards, that way all three get healed via kiku and counter holy's don't hurt. Also the time bard could heal both the summon (blast gun) and white bard (demi's) that way.

ROUND 1 WAS ACTION PACKED! It feels like two rivals who got the chance to battle it out once again after so many years have gone (Well its actually just many weeks lol their last fight was in S4). That R1 was an exchange of powerful moves which left me speechless and in awe! silentkaster's resilience was the one to watch and also Rouroni's agressive Oracles DEMOLISHING the monks with crit shots and procs was epic. Very entertaining match you guys!

Haupauge Rocket?? I'll assume it's a booster pack/program? I'm currently on a binary recording system. Record the entire thing at normal/.5 speed due to derpy/semi-slow laptop. Then put it into AVS and make it 2.5 speed, layer commentary, then process to WMV. And upload. Hopefully, with a new emulator, I can get the GPU to configure properly, and can just unhinge the frame rate, and commentate at the same time. (Might have gotten everything done two nights ago, if I could have done that.) I also can't wander to far while the laptop records, incase my daughter, kitten, wife, or a program decideds to do something dumb. I do, however, ignore the match in progress, minus those sweet sweet death cries.

no its a capture card... usually used to record video from a gaming console... my computer is so weak that if i used a software recorder instead my framerate would be 10fps instead of my current 40-60 fps... it helps out as i run it as though its a second monitor and running epsxe fullscreen on the second screen. produces rather clean video too. but its not cheap.. i got it for about $150 dollars as a gift a year ago... and completely forgot i had the thing.

It seemed like a good idea on paper, but I can't seem to get the AI to use it on my thief team. I've even tried only giving the ninjistu thief just heretic and the tans and put them up against a high magic attacking team, they still won't use it.

It IS a good idea. The bigger problem is, like you said, getting them to USE it.
It helps to have it anyway because against high-faith teams and being targeted, they WILL use it to protect themselves.
Also try pairing the Atheist Bow alongside the -Ton user for more damage.

If you look at one of TrueLight's teams unshakable faith his team is set for the ninja to cast heretic.
My anti oil ninjitsu is set up the same way. Make a lore unit that goes before your heretic unit that way the AI will use heretic onto him/herself

I've considered this. But yeah, $150 is a bit much for me. (Double that and I have my next console.)

Games with silentkaster are always bittersweet. I like to see him do well, but I like to win too. Definitely had a hand tied behind his back which left too many openings for me, but I also got really lucky with RNG. GG, man. Maybe we'll meet again on the doom train, I don't want anything to do with the remaining 3 teams in the winner's bracket, pretty sure they'll swipe me.
@skiploom: Hey don't tease me like that! You know I'm a fan. Great job this tournament, really kicking some ass this year.
@gatebuster: I'm gonna die long before you get a chance to kill me, so best of luck in the winners bracket!

It really does depend on what the AI decides to do.
My units block a lot of R.E.'s offense, and hit right past his own defenses, whether it's the high damage Southron Phoenix capable of one-hitting multiple units or the very quadratic first female Squire, or even the second one just interrupting spells or using Demi-Demi 2. And don't forget that they have Counter Magic.
He'll have his work cut out for him, but like anything in Arena there's always a chance to win.

This is all true Reks, and your team of Squires is very well synergized. They don't separate, and get themselves killed. I'll be quite honest, in that I can't predict how this will go.

Those ninjas are a scary group, after all it sent DomieV to the doom train and also take out Dragonblade's Archer team which are ranged attackers. What I didn't expect was that guns, guns, and guns would stop them in their tracks. Mediators never even got the chance to talk to them. GG Vigilanti, I feel your loss too.

@Rouroni Hehe you're right I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that. Guess I was caught in the moment oops. I'm really happy I made it this far. To be able to stay for longer in Arena is one thing I've always wanted to experience. You have taught me well :D

Three high damage, unevadeable, guns, and then a Romanda to snipe(literally) the weakened remainders. I was surprised when you got sent to the Doom Train, because I thought to myself, 4 Unevadeable damage sources, that hit for about 200, no way that loses.
As I said in my commentary, those guns were brutal. Any elemental absorb could have at least redirected certain gunners to new targets. I have time today to start recording parts of round four. So we can get caught up with the winner's bracket.
Vigilanti, it was good fun to see your ninjas beat the bejeezus out of everyone. Look forward to your next entry.

Wow. Close match man, I can't believe how that ended in R3. If it wasn't for my slight speed advantage you'd have taken that for sure. That double turn there at the end from my Samurai sealed the deal. Your scholars were very powerful with those holys but 3/4 of my team absorbs earth which was your primary means of offense, so I can see why you fell short. GG!
3 of my units do have revive, it just seemed my two magical units that both could revive were the ones that always were going down. Raise/Raise 2, and Fairy are there on the casters, and then the item bot (after he dies and loses berserk, that is). He used to have a diamond helmet for initial reraise and float but I decided to go with some light elemental absorb and went with the gold helmet instead for some status protection. It seems for now at least going with the slight elemental absorb has proven to be a good choice.
Good luck to you Silentkaster in our upcoming match in R4. I think I may need it more than you, but we'll have to see. I can't see my self getting past you, or if I do happen to, not past Heoebal or Skiploom in R5. I feel like all 3 of you have better built teams than mine and will probably wipe the floor with my Samurais.
Good job to the remaining teams. This has been an exciting tourney so far, I can't wait to see how it ends.

Rouroni---> Playing keep away with the squires is the way to go. Because in my practice runs that's how my bards would win. That 1st round my time bard would keep the two male squires "occupied" long enough for the other 3 bards to work over the lady squires, then I would lose the 2nd round, and then overwhelm with AoE on the 3rd round. I was might have been able to get the first round in the official run if my white bard got the raise 2 in time. He could have just went for normal raise too I think would have worked. Also after the match I swapped the summon/white bard's rings around and went 2-0...but then again the rings the way they are may save me in my next match.
I think I might be alright actually be alright if Skip's Med's stick to gun dmg. My white bard absorbs both of the magic guns, time bard absorbs lightning, and summon bard can absorb holy. I think the white bard being immune to both guns may allow him to keep the other bards healthy enough to layout units. I'll get in trouble I think if my bards start getting put to sleep/DA/berserked b/c then my white bard is gonna get dropped via holy and then it will just be down hill from there.

Actually, looking back at it, Rouroni is very likely to win.
My only form of Status recovery is Heal, which does not cover Petrify, so if it lands that unit is gone for good.
Eh, it's what I get for trying to show that the Ultima Weapon needs a change :P

Can anyone make a video of properly using the damn import function. I'm hand writing everything in. Takes me 15 minutes per pair.
After trying to record three times today and having nothing usable due to several unique factors, (cat, child, wife, mother-in-law.) I am letting Corosar do his thing. In the interim, I will be switching Emulators and getting 200fps record speed so I can commentate live, vs commentating after each match is recorded. Provides better commentary for you and I don't have to spend five hours on four matches.
@Barren/CT5 I was trying to get the Doom Train movin, so I can see if DW built a better Geo Team or not.

I could send you a .gme with every palette in but I'm not sure it would help. They have set values, so you still have to input the zodiacs, Brave & Faith in FFTastic and then go in-game, set jobs, manually learn + equip abilities and equip the items. Once you're used to it it really isn't too bad. I can also make a short video on how I proceed to make a team with this unusual method.

Wow Maki-chan! (my undead mediator) Not only did she revive on time when all was dead in Round 1, but she also showed the will to survive on Round 2 as well. It's funny seeing in Round 2 that the berserk Bard accidentally keeps healing my Undead Mediator. Close fight, but Mediators fell short in the end. Aww now no one will represent Mediators :(

I can't believe I won. I really thought you were going to be the one to eliminate me again like in the last tourney. Looks like I have avenged my self. After seeing you totally take control of R1, and seeing the time left on the match, I really did not expect to be able to come back and take 2 rounds that quickly. GG man.
To my opponent in R5:
GL Heroebal. I think this is the end of the line for me. Your team scares me haha.
Mediators were well represented by you. Your team did a fine job and got much farther than I'd anticipate a team of all mediators to go. The way they were put together worked well with all the different guns.

Wizards showed their tenacity here, I thought krypt's oracles was gonna take this one.
Speed magic vs speed physical. That archer thief did a pretty good job shutting down the undead time mage and chipping in on the other units.
Yeah I was surprised to see the comeback with so short of time left. GG Mud
Yeah that was a fun match. Your undead mediator got the right idea towards the end of R2, ie put my guys to sleep/da then kill them with guns/holy. She maybe could have pulled it off herself if she landed more of the talk skills off.
Idk we'll see how it goes, you do have counter magic on your side. One of my spells getting countered followed by a chiri or summon of your own could cripple me. That berserked unit may have enough dmg to one shot or cripple anyone he touches, hopefully my white bard doesn't forget he has protect... Frog could be a problem also I think only my white bard can get rid of it.

Good match. I am kind of dissapointed, but I still have a chance to come back. And yeah, it was probably the unevadable 120 damage geomancies that cost me in the end. I am a huge fan of elemental, but since I prioritized evade I wasn't able to boost it as much as gatebuster did. Also, my team had 8 speed across the board so those slow 2's really screwed me up. On a brighter note, it was really funny to see all those reraises. I guess my team just gave up at the end. Time to go suplex the doom train!

Funny: Demi is more of a side offense and a way to heal the Cursed Ring Squire.
The ones you'll wanna watch for are the male Squires. Especially the second one. He eats low-HP units for breakfast, and as far as I can see none of your units really have over 300 HP.

We're looking at sporadic bad compatibility. Each unit has bad compat with another so that will mitigate some damage. I have enough sustain to survive a hit and stay up, as do you. It will literally come down to the better AI set up on the map.
@Everyone else. I intend to get recording tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll do round Five for certain. Might get Six done as well. Hopefully b4 Barren gets the Semifinal done.

GG Reks, that was probably the most nail-biting fourteen minutes. I kept expecting th undead squire to get back up and start out pacing my revives R3. R1 was more luck then anything when that Holy missed off the Aegis. Honestly that Charm was a great addition to your team if it had come up once in R3 I might have been looking at the Doom Train. R2 was your squires making very good use of Demi, and being able to engage immediately instead of losing a turn to Accumulate. I built my team wanting to see quickening thieves running up to me and using Quickening, but it seems to work for Accumulate an Focus too. Again, GG, and you do pack quite the wallop with those blades so a rematch will be fun if it happens.
I am having an excel issue ATM, but it should be resolved shortly.

Oh man, that was a great match, can't even be mad about a game like that. Round 1 was Murphy's law for me, if a couple of things went right I could have taken that. Round 2 was the complete opposite, more things hit than they had any business doing but it seem they still had a hard time putting the squires away. Great job on the commentary, CT5Holy, it was a blast all season.
GG, reks. Ain't no shame in being beaten by a master, good luck in the semi finals!

I felt good after round one, but it just seem to go downhill from there. Too many wasted turns after that Charm which doesn't help against a fast team of Thieves. Wizards couldn't recover in round three after the missed Raise 2. It was a nice run for me in the loser's bracket, but it looks like my time has come. GG.

Damn that was a bad sign with two frog procs right off the bat. GG Mud I had a fun/good run this time around @ this tourney.
Nice win for Fattyzilla, those thieves can be tenacious. Good run TL, can't have too many missed opportunities against thieves. Those last two wizards didn't go down with out a fight though.

That raise2 missing right at the beginning of R3 was big. Those thiefs just absolutely swarmed all over TrueLights team. Those 12 speed thiefs are pretty scary. Good job Fattyzilla!

Wow, Blind on my berserked Samurai in R3 almost cost me the match. He missed about... 10 turns in a row? :oops: Those Bizen Boats also screwed up my game plan a few times. You really did have me worried there with all that evasion your team has. GG DW!
Too much speed, couldn't hang. Those thiefs just swarm you and hit SO hard. GJ Fattyzilla.
Very happy with how far my team has made it in this tournament. After getting eliminated straight to the losers bracket from my first match-up, I did not have much confidence in this team. Pretty surprised at how they performed and managed to eliminate some of the teams that they did.

Squire vs Thief
Brutal. The harsh reality high speed vs low speed. Even without quickening this wasn't going to end well for Reks since he had spellcasters. GJ making it so far with squire though Reks. Definitely wanted squire to take this tournament
Geomancer vs Thief Geomancer's probably my favorite class behind mime. Maybe tied with Samurai, Oracle, and Squire actually. It's definitely possible to take it since geomancer has great stats outside of speed.
Set 1 - Not surprised. Wasn't even close
Set 2 - Nailbiter. I wouldn't call it luck, but the maps where gatebuster had good geomancy magics were the ones he won on convincingly. Glad this wasn't a long and drawn out set. GG
Cheer Song, Quickening, and the Speed Dance could stand to be removed for a patch. I'd like to see teams with static SP go at in the future. When SP gets to a certain point the advantage becomes just as good as having another unit on the team. I do like SP boosting myself though. I won't stop until it's patched out for a season. GL to everyone in next year's tournament even if it's still 139.

Starring Flood the undead frog who couldn't do anything as her teammates' corpses were huddled up in the corner. That was probably the most entertaining match I've seen with any of my teams. Especially round three. In fact, it might have been that frog proc that cost me in the end. I'm happy with my progress this tourney.
Now off to watch those other matches...I mean off to class, THEN to watch the matches.

Thank you to both Barren and Corosar, just checking in today. My wife had some issues, (health related.) We have them mostly resolved, so I will be back on the forums Friday or so. (Very sorry for the delay in the tournament, I really wanted to do the matches I was supposed to do.)

I'm caught up on the loser's Bracket. GG to Mudvayne, I'd been hoping to face you. Great showing for how early you hit the Doom Train. Reks, GG, sorry that we couldn't go a second match up. Fatty, I look forward to these Finals.

Wow, GG Fatty, those thieves man. High speed has some devastation to it. Though, that Charm is really what was wrecking me more then anything. Cancel the spells and then turn the ladies on the team. Brutal combo. I was really happy to play on the Volcano as Geo's get to abuse the terrain on that map(It's the only lava map) and really got to shine in the second half on the geomancy. After that trouncing I was shown in the first set, I was worried after that first match. Then I saw the Execution Site and was saying "crap, here we go again." I was surprised at how well the Monastery maps played out for me over the course of the Tourney. I'd have to say that, aside from the pure speed of thieves, I was really threatened by Reks squires and their similarities to geo's in stats.
GG to all, and Thanks again to Barren and Corosar, very sorry that I became delayed with life. (I know it happens, it just sucks when I have a commitment I want to keep.) I'LL throw a big thanks out to Barren helping me brainstorm for Monks when this all started and giving me a few pointers once I got Geos. I'm really surprised that this build won, and fear what might have happened against another set of teams. (CT5's priests or Elmdore's Oracles. For example, or a Status Protection/ High HP Team.)
With this being a SCC, don't expect anything good out of my ranked teams when I build them. ;)
Edit. 1.40 Thoughts.
I have to agree with Shintroy, I'd love to see static speed on a team. I'd say that thieves have some fairly strong abilities in their kit. (Steals, Ruins, CHARM!!!) And will survive just fine as the fastest SOB's in the game. I'd like to see what happens with just haste/slow/stop on the table.
Geo procs can't be relied on at their current % ratio. And trust me when I say, their is very little reason to build a geomancer or geomancy in a standard arena team, when you have to cover far more variables. (In a SCC or a Dual CC, they shine.) (Unevadable damage is much easier achieved in other forms, and their elements can lead to problems.) A 20% inflict rate, (a very small change.) would up the power of geomancy. (Also the strongest of all(Lava Ball.) is limited to what, two maps? Three? And Dead protection is almost as common as silence protection.) Just a thought for making Geomancy valid for standard matches.
I'd also suggest a tweak to Squires. (I forget how much we can tweak gender variables.) Can we up Male PA by one and Female MA by one, and reduce the opposite Attribute by one as well. It would allow for greater specialization and focus based on gender with out making the class unbalanced in stats. Just some thoughts...

That was an awesome tournament! Everybody who recorded matches did a great job, and congratulations gate buster! My internet has been garbage lately so it's been taking me forever to watch everything, and therefore respond.
Really interesting to see the two teams that beat me duke it out, what ultimately cost reks the victory was the investment into anti magic stuff. Got him this far, but speed and physical damage won the day. DW, mudvayne, fattyzilla.. you all did fantastic and have proven you are forces to be reckoned with.
I'm happy with my run, oracles are sitting generally where they belong, but there's an issue: I already have an oracle team, so these lovely ladies need a good home! At the cost of synergy, I went with 4 very different oracle builds all of which would make an excellent addition to any team. I firmly believe there is at least one status to compliment every team composition (which is why I feel "status based team" seems a funny thing to say) and with a tweak here and there, any one of these oracles will get that job done.
As you can see, they are quite happy together, but they'll be much happier on a team with more variety.

Maybe when Christmas break happens and 1.4 gets introduced finally we can run a tourney where everyone has to have a mime on their team. Think of it like an regular arena tournament only exception being you got to have a mime on your team i.e. Shintroy's Donuts team. Figured that can be a new kind of tourney that can be fun. Cause well as CT5Holy would say "Mimes are fun!"

I said so at the beginning of this tourney and I'll say it again. I'm really happy with how this tournament played out. Especially with the new players doing particularly well. Fun fact: Geomancers used to be a joke class with terrible stats. Then their PA/MA got upped by one and they become so powerful that Geomancy had to be toned down.
Congratulations to all the participants. It's good to know that even though I didn't go far I can at least say I got knocked out by second place!

It was a fun run for me, and I am happy with Geos as a independent class. A thought at Barren. We could actually make sure everyone had a mime in a team by locking it to a gender (Male or Female) for everyone and then make your standard four man teams. (We don't break the sprite limit) Just a thought.

We can discuss the rules of a possible future Mime tournament for another thread. But as far as locking a mime into one gender I don't think would encourage people to join. I think everyone should pick a gender for the mimes. If we add monsters to the next patch it will certainly spice things up

What about a negative status locked tournament? Maybe have a requirement for every unit to have some way to land the team's status effect. Even though it would never happen, it's obvious sleep or stop would win the tournament. I've been wanting to make a death sentence team for the longest, but didn't since there's the cancel dead equipment exploit to hold me back.

If we release the next patch, the equips genji shield and gold armor in particular should be getting immune death sentence so that way the AI won't wont Death Sentence on a target that isn't immune DS but is immune to dead. It cost a number of teams victories in the past. Plus you can use breaks/steals to bypass status protection if you're willing to add some flexibility

100% agreed. It gives two free turns to the AI (it DOES make the AI lose one turn, but still that is a net gain of one turn). While I realize this mechanic was in Vanilla, it made certain things, like an SSCC possible. Here, the AI does not learn that the unit is immune to DS so it continues to use DS many times which, at best, extends a match a lot, or at worst, causes the team to lose completely. (What's funny is that the AI realizes that DS won't work, as it will cast attack magic on a unit wearing one of these items hit with DS to hit the target after DS expires.)
