Title: FFH Trivia Tournament 2009- Congratulations Dominic!
Post by: Eternal on October 12, 2009, 10:26:25 pm
Since a bunch of people seem to enjoy my trivia games that I throw on IRC every once in a while, I thought it would be fun to throw a little tournament to see who knows the most about the Final Fantasy Series. Lasting_Dawn and I will be making the questions, and I'm quite excited to say that this will be the biggest trivia game yet!

16* will participate... 1 will walk away the victor- a Final Fantasy Trivia Master! Will it be you?

Tournament will take place 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time on Sunday, October 18, 2009.

-Tournament Rules-

1) Closeness Counts
If an answer is spelled correctly enough to where I can understand what's being said, it counts as a point.

2) If You're Out, You're Out
If you've lost a round and you're out, you may NOT yell out any answers.

3) No Man is an Island
Even I can be wrong at times, so if I have a question and it's been answered with an answer that you know is wrong, find some proof and I'll give you a point.

4) Tools are Meant to be Used
Using guides and resources such as the Final Fantasy Wiki are perfectly acceptable (not that I would know, regardless), but know that by looking a question up, you could be wasting valuable time compared to someone who may already know the answer. So GUESS if you have a guess, don't be afraid.

Questions will come from the following games:
Final Fantasy (NES/GBA)
Final Fantasy II (NES/GBA)
Final Fantasy III (NES/DS)
Final Fantasy IV (GBA)
Final Fantasy V (SNES/GBA)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES/GBA)
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy Tactics

List of Current Participants (will update regularly):
1: PX
2: Saigas
3: Darth
4: Vanya
5: Philsov
6: AAAH!
7: Redux
8: FFMaster
9: Dominic
10: Samuri
11: Nocat
12: Ryu
13: Kagebunji
14: Wareya
15: Zodiac
16: Tiger

The questions asked will be from nearly every category. Music, characters, story, items, monsters, you name it.

Method of Elimination:
Each person participating in the tournament will be on a bracket. At the end of each round, whoever has the least amount of points in their pairing will be knocked out of the competition. Seeds are randomly decided and each round has 50 questions, for a total of 200 questions overall. In the case of a tie, whoever answers a tiebreaker question correctly first moves on.

Prize:
Knowing (and being able to brag) that you know more about the Final Fantasy series than anyone else in the series!

Sign-ups are due the day before the trivia (October 17), and the bracket will be posted the day of the trivia.

The tournament will take place on a special IRC room I will designate by PM the day of the tournament.

HAVE FUN!

*or less, depending on how many sign up.

EDIT:
And so the tournament is complete! Congratulations Dominic!

For those interested in seeing the tournament bracket, I'll post a link to the download below! Thanks for participating!

Damn, I want to, but I'm probably doing something for my wedding that day.
Maybe do us non-participants a favor and post the questions here after the tournament is over?

Sure thing, Vanya.

I can sign you up now, and if it turns out you can't participate then you just won't advance. And if you can, you'd be signed up. Interested?

Fuck it. I'm in. I'll let you know a head of time if I need to pull out. That's just courteous! ^_^

*Shame on me for such a bad pun!*

No Mystic Quest? :(
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 13, 2009, 03:38:42 pm
I don't think enough people here have played that (myself included) for it to be fair to ask questions about it. =P
Title:
Post by: FFMaster on October 13, 2009, 04:13:35 pm
In.

FFXII questions are going to hurt...
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 13, 2009, 04:15:13 pm
Then study. Or ask LD to give you the answers. He's making the XII questions. ^_^

I note the no tactics advance, also can I request a Vagrant Story bonus round?
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 13, 2009, 04:56:13 pm
Not enough people have played Vagrant Story for it to be fair, IMO. So sticking to the main series and Tactics should make it as fair as possible. Note that XI is also not included for that same reason.

Ok makes sence, the first five games are going to screw me royaly.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 13, 2009, 04:58:46 pm
Luckily, the first five games are also the easiest to study.
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on October 13, 2009, 10:19:25 pm
Is there a study guide? As in a list of things we should know, not all being in the challenge as that would create a cheat sheet.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on October 13, 2009, 10:21:17 pm
Reading up the articles on the FF Wikipedia should give you a few useful hints, but a few of my questions are rather vindictive, though... hmm a study guide... any ideas Eternal?
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 13, 2009, 10:55:03 pm
Hmm, I can create one and PM it to the people that sign up. I'd need to know what questions you're asking, though, LD. =P
Title:
Post by: Vanya on October 13, 2009, 11:11:26 pm
I'm not gonna study a damn thing just to see what I can remember.
Title:
Post by: Samuraiblackbelt on October 14, 2009, 02:03:38 am
still space left? I'm in but there's probably around a 75% chance I won't be online at that time
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on October 14, 2009, 05:45:19 am
Hm... I'll need to know the time of day before I know if I can make it.

Will it be very obscure and/or absurdly specific trivia, or will there be more interesting facts?  As in things like "What is the earliest level possible to promote the FF1 heroes" versus things like "Where is Flare first available in FF1?"  If there's going to be ANY questions about specific monster stats or anything more annoyingly obscure and pointless than that, then I don't want to participate.  I'm hoping it will all be interesting and/or useful bits of trivia, such as describing the latest roles Biggs and Wedge played in the series.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 14, 2009, 12:51:21 pm
Darn... the former is actually a question I'll be using! Stupid Silvas and your psychic powers. =P

And truthfully... I can't answer your question. I don't think my questions are too obscure, but I can't answer for LD's. It really can't hurt to participate either way, though, IMO.

Ill give it a go. Im in.
Title:
Post by: philsov on October 14, 2009, 02:45:41 pm
Quote"What is the earliest level possible to promote the FF1 heroes"

Theoretically possible at 1, no?
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 14, 2009, 02:46:44 pm
Level 12, actually. You're doomed to gain EXP from the bosses beforehand.
Title:
Post by: philsov on October 14, 2009, 03:06:03 pm
Yes, but you can spread the exp around with dead people, or prevent one character from ever gaining a level with enough resets :)
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 14, 2009, 03:26:40 pm
Hmm, interesting. I'll have to conduct some research on that. =D

Just realised that time difference makes Trivia on Monday...

Can't make it.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 15, 2009, 04:22:33 pm
OK, I have a proposition.

Since Sunday seems to be a bad day for a few people, what if I changed it to Saturday, so it's a day earlier? Same time, just a different day.

Any objections?
Title:
Post by: DarthPaul on October 15, 2009, 06:05:49 pm
Time? I have class 1-4 Eastern USA on Saturday.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 15, 2009, 09:53:17 pm
It would remain the same. 8:00 PM Eastern Time (I think it's eastern time, whatever time zone Michigan is in).
Title:
Post by: Vanya on October 15, 2009, 11:35:41 pm
Yeah, Eastern is correct.
Title:
Post by: akwikone on October 16, 2009, 02:55:33 am
Um, I've have to play a gig on Saturday 4 to 10 PM MT Time, and it's my birthday that day, so I don't know how busy I'll be.
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 16, 2009, 01:12:49 pm
So neither of these days works out well for anyone... any other suggestions?

Also, 100TH POST! =D

Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 19, 2009, 01:17:36 am
Well, as you can see from the Bracket, it was rather interesting. Everybody was rooting against Dominic, but he won anyways. =P
Title:

Post the questions here and those who didn't play can try to answer ^^
Title:

QuoteEverybody was rooting against Dominic

Dominic left a bloody wake behind him.  "The area where Draclau found scorpio?"   and just am I'm done reading the question, he's already got the answer input!  Not that I knew it anyways, but still.

what's with the megaupload, what's wrong with photobucket?
Title:
Post by: Eternal on October 19, 2009, 05:55:13 pm
Ah, thank you Arch.

I tried uploading it on Photobucket, but because the original file was a webpage, it wouldn't take and I had no clue how to convert it without messing the bracket up. Technological ignorance, ftw?

As far as the questions go, do you want me to put them on Megaupload or just copy/paste them?
Title:
Post by: Samuraiblackbelt on October 19, 2009, 06:26:13 pm
you could just take a screenshot and paste it in paint, then upload it, that's what I did for this bracket:
