Title: Portrait reference sheet
Post by: Lijj on March 04, 2012, 10:45:26 am
Now opening references for portrait pixeling is an easy one-step process.

And don't request I put the Dark knights or Luso on this. :p

What about my Dark Knight portrait I made from yours?

I don't feel bad saying this since I made most of it. It just isn't good enough to use as ref.

Yes, only above average quality ports can be submitted. Remember this is supposed to be a good ref, and below average ports (like DK from WOTL) are definitly not helpfull here.

Agreed. If the armor was a different color and you could actually distinguish where the helmet ends and the neck starts, maybe...the WotL ones are not good though? I like the whole black mage wearing a helmet, but whatever...

I was made a Ramuh portrait, while its not that great it could be used as a decent base for something like an old arcane wizard or whatever...I'll look for it later...

Double post, second post on this old thread of mine for Ramuh possibly? http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=4397.600

This is awesome Lijj.

I will see if i can find any others in the WLDFACE and EVTFACE that you don't have on here yet

I'm pretty sure Lijj got all the FFTEVGRP ones, after quick viewing...

Do you think those Japanese portraits of Marche, Ritz and other FF characters are good enough for this sheet? I don't know where that whole Japanese sheet is though...just an idea.

I wish I could portrait, is there a tutorial around? I think if I learned how to do this correctly I would be able to contribute some portraits, its just I find spriting the characters easier...

Edit: In the bottom left, is that Sephiroth with darker hair?

If that were true then the ones i gave him earlier would've already been there :P

Some of the ones in EVGRP can't be seen without the Japanese version of EVGRP
Since the older version we have here only allows you to look at the WLDFACE for formation sprites,
this doesn't include the EVTFACE, which is included in the Japanese version.

It's Elmdor's brother from IA

Thanks for those portraits Elric and Kage for giving me some good obscure ones. I don't think the Japanese ones are good ref because they have bad coloration.

I like the little updated thing in the bottom left of the picture  very nice touch

True, but coloration isn't so important, they are pretty good references either way, your choice though...

I like it.

Feel free to include the two I did here (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=6936.msg141892;topicseen#msg141892) if you like them.

Cyan Garamonde, and Mog.

Oh! Cyan's already there.

Didn't like Mog?

Heh. next to all those really white people, cyan's skin stands out. lol.

The moogle / mog isn't bad at all, but it isn't exactly FFT style. I think all portraits are pretty much just the head and neck and a tiny bit of the shoulders / upper body. Yours has like the head and half the body...but its still very cool anyways Darkholme!

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but seeing as it pertains to the topic I have to ask. Using GraphicsGale, I can't seem to cut a portrait out of the megaref and adjust it to 16colors to update portraits in WLDFACE. Is this an issue I can get around? Or do I just need to paint over the colors manually to get it to match the original on the megaref?

How about..

Pick a large PNG workspace, take the mega-ref there, have as much freedom and colors as you'd like, do your portrait, fix the colors without worry to 16, and after all of that is done you make the 16 color WLDFACE file separate.

For example, I have a large single file in which I do all my stuff. It measures like 1200x6000 or something.. When work's done, make separate small files with the restrictions for whatever programs they'll be for.

That's not what hes asking Smash.

There is a way to convert to the 16 color palette in Graphics Gale after cutting the port out of the Master Reference Sheet.

I will post it once I get out of work.

Thanks Elric. I don't use Graphics Gale ever really unless I'm putting a portrait and it's palette into a spritesheet following Mav's old tutorial.

No problem Lijjster.

@ soxbaseball0328

1. Download the megaref.png
2. Open in MSPaint or whatever, and select the port you want to use, copy it.
3. Open GraphicsGale
4. At the top Click Edit, Paste New Image (not paste)
5. With the image selected, click the All Frames tab at the top, then click on Color Depth...
6. In the Color Depth window, make sure it is set to TypeA, and under format 8bpp (256 Colors) <- This is usually already preset.
7. Hit Ok
8. Now if you look at the Palette it will be the proper 16 colors.

IF you are trying to use this to make a WLDFACE, (Dunno why since Celdia made a tutorial for doing it a much easier way) you will need to now SAVE the picture with the proper palette. Then open the WLDFACE image you want to replace, load the palette of the Image you just saved, and copy that palette to the WLDFACE image (make sure that "Match pixels with colors" is selected for Ports!) After you've done this, THEN you can copy/paste your picture from the Megaref over the WLDFACE image and reimport.

For a better explanation of this, see Celdia's Formation Sprite Tutorial HERE (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=6702.0).

Never try to make your own WLDFACE images, it will give you much more success to just copy over an existing one, since it is incredibly picky when it comes to reimporting.

Hope this helps!

I can't see the sheet anymore in the OP, does it still exist where you hosted it?

Luckily, I saved it on my comp but just wanted to point out that it borked.

 odd. Thanks for pointing it out I'll re upload it. We should add more of the ports to it. I'll do it when I get back from a short trip I'm leaving for later today. (bb in a couple weeks) If I can get permission from everyone I'll add all the new portraits in as well.
