Use softer greens (see attachment), and pick skin tones that aren't so orange. Also his hair looks like it just cuts off at the cape, fix that too. Try an eye swap while you're at it.

Those colors will work. :)
Should we make him more like a calm type?

LD mentioned wanting a calmer looking portrait--the current eyes have a certain level of intensity that could be done away with.

Actually...replacing the eyes is gonna be a big task here. See, with long hair the wrong eye choice will immediately make this character look like a woman. And I'm guessing that's not what we want.

But then again, I only noticed this after I did some hair modifications on the portrait...I dunno.

I have a huge problem with the eyes and jaw

there's just something that doesn't look right... I think his jawline might be too high up, actually! the room below his eyes seems too small

compare his face to your portrait of a male squire, mav

more jaw please, the face looks too small compared to that head of hair... that hair + the bandana thing make the upper part of his face WAY too busy.. and then the small jaw line makes the effect even worse

yeah, I think that's it

Hmmm, I'm gonna take a little time to rework his face. I have a feeling everything has been pushed down, probably due to the headband. I worked on the hair previously, but it's just so damn feminine...

I don't mean to be harsh, but this portrait just really needs to be started over. Effephoenix you seem to be trying to create texture or something, but the pixels are just turning up in random places and his face ends up looking like it was made out of playdough. The design idea is fine though, it just needs a fresh start instead of trying to fix the base.

I gotta say, attempt after attempt, I don't feel that I'm doing this portrait justice either. It's gonna be tough...I'll probably go back to working on the other portraits, since I personally don't think I can do this one.

Effe, I think you should take Cheetah's advice and just start from scratch on this one. Or wait till the sprites complete to rework the portrait...

My final attempt is attached.

EDIT: Perhaps I should have said "my final attempt at working on the previous portrait is attached". My first attempt at a new portrait is also attached.

Hmm, the first one sort of looks like a straight cut and paste, the second one looks much better, but he looks too sneaky for my likes.

Alright, I tried an eye swap on the one that doesn't look like a Geomancer. I cleaned up some trouble spots, hopefully I can get the hair to look a little less dull (color-wise).

Anyway, feel free to give feedback, or not.

@effephoenix,
I must say, I suggest you should work on the sprite palette first. :P
-change the position of the mouth?

EDIT:
I just saw the latest update,
and the upper one looks nicer.

In reference to the new one:
-Cover up that ear with hair
-Neck line around the...thing needs work. Put some more dark skin tones on the right into the shadow and change some on the left for a bit depth/shadow
-His jaw line is wonky
-Right side of his face, nose, needs to be different to allow for better contrast between his face and hair.
-He needs a tuft of hair sticking out out from the top of the head band on the right. No need to cover any more of the headband, just work on the shading/gradient there.

Alright, so I scrapped working on the "new" portrait, for the time being in favor of working on the "original" one. I brightened the hair and skin, so he shouldn't have that dirty look anymore.

No no the new one is better, I find the hair for this one just beyond repair. At least start over on the hair for the old one.

^ For me, that is good enough. We don't really need a perfect portrait.
We just need one at the moment. :)

Just add some finishing touches and that is good to go.

I take back what I said before. :)

For me, I like the manly look for the EsperBlade.
Since they are hard to obtain in the job wheel, they should look very experience.
I can't picture anything, though at the moment..

Alright, well the last portrait (and subsequently this one) are pretty much an amalgam of the other two portraits: one's hair and eyes, one's face and neck, and a modified skin tone all around. So I cleaned up the shading a bit and continued work on the hair line. It shouldn't look like a Geomancer anymore, nor should it look like Wiegraf. It should look...unique?

the mouth looks... offset on the enlarged one, though on the smaller one it looks fine.
Just another rebel plotting rebellion.

this is better, but I still have issues with it

it is hard to make a face for that hair, it seems

or maybe I am just being picky as hell after seeing that Minwu portrait

I think it's an issue with the face shape itself, since there really isn't too much of a difference between male faces with long hair and female faces. It might even be the right cheek and jaw that are mucking things up...

I'll keep working on it though.

EDIT: The top attachment is a work in progress--reshaped face, cape has been adjusted, part of the hair has been erased (temporarily?)...Should I go back to how it was before, or should I continue with this?
