Playing FF8 for the first time

Buh... Being a Final Fantasy nut, I can't honestly say I hate any of them to the point of never playing them.

In all honesty, I think all the Final Fantasies were all AT LEAST worth playing/trying, can we agree on that? xD lol



I'm big on Battle Systems too, and must say, Other than FFT's...3, 4, 6, and VII, were the only really truly enjoyable Battle Systems.


The others were kinda like, "If I didn't need to level up I'd be running right now..." and sometimes I'd runaway regardless. xD

I hated FF8's battle system. First was the Junctioning, Drawing spells is a royal pain in the ass, and doing Triple Triad for cards to convert into spells is even more tedious. I tried an LLG, it was stupidly easy once you got all the godly junctions. Boss fights were over in less than five turns, maybe less if I spammed Limit Breaks. Limit Breaks being spammable is really broken, insane damage with almost no drawbacks. There is only one way to win battles, duke it out with physicals as magic is crap, and who would want to waste their junctioned magic when their physical attacks / limit breaks do much more damage?

I didn't go all the way through, it wasn't fun watching the bosses get raped over and over.

As a guy who loves FF8 to death...Play another game. I only like FF8 for the nostalgia value nowadays. It's really shitty. Just play another game.

because Sephiroth is in FF7 and by association all other FF's are lovely

so, if you hate FF dont play FF ok

go play some other trash like Lego Legaia

FF8, hm.. Well, I didn't HATE it. But the battle system is too cut and dry, like FF7s. When it came down to it the best people to use were based on the best Limit Breaks [So basically, Squall because you have no choice, Irvine for Shot, and Zell for stupid broken Duel]. Magic is indeed crap, but there was still Meltdown that made things even more rape for the bosses. There's no diversity in skills because everyone has everything, and it's possible to get Lionheart in Disc 1 [is it possible in any FF besides this one to get the final weapon in the beginning?]. Of course, you don't HAVE to break the game, but the fact is that you have the option to, and playing Triple Triad isn't very hard at all.

As for the story, it could've been fine, but it was written poorly. The "plot twist" at the basketball court, for example.
"Hey, did you know that (spoiler)?"
"Woah, I remember!"

Same with the Squall and Rinoa story.... well, you'll see. I don't think you should stop playing.. because you might like it. It could end up being some sort of acquired taste. But if you're expecting an RPG made of gold, then you might be disappointed.

Stupid Squall and Rinoa behavior in general.

Despite that I still like 8

Spoony's an OK reviewer. Gets annoying at times, particular at Part 8 (yet to see 9 and 10). But I've yet to see a better review of FF8 honestly.

FF6 and Tactics were the only FFs with enjoyable battle systems, I think. The rest were some variation of spam A until things die.

Ok, it's a bit more complex than that in some. 5 at least mixed up which ability you spammed as you changed jobs, and 8 made you draw magic (though honestly I'd rather be spamming A). 12's bored me to death because I despise most everything about it (MMOs aren't popular for their battle systems. Why'd they have to rip off those?). And I'm not sure we're counting 11... similar complaints to 12 though.

That's how it was in the concept art. They only gave her green hair because otherwise it'd be harder to differentiate her from celes.

The initial idea behind her was "foreigner." The name Tina and blond hair are both foreign to japan. Not very foreign to us, but eh.

Considering that every RPG fan should strive to play every FF, I think you should definitely play it. I certainly enjoyed parts of it and it is a good play overall. It is certainly a little broken and annoying at times, but definitely worth playing if you are a Final Fantasy fan.
