Spriting / New katana battle sprites
April 26, 2022, 02:10:05 am
For a long time, it bothered me that the battle sprites for the katanas looked nothing like their inventory counterpart.  And so I have made them look more similar. Pictures below. Enjoy!

Rules
• Any Zodiac, including Serpentarius, is legal
• Teams will consist of four generic humans at Level 35, controlled by enemy AI routines.
• Brave and Faith can range between 50 and 80.
• Each unit has 3000 JP to spend on various abilities.  It costs 250 JP to unlock a job and its skillset; this unlock cost counts for a unit's primary job, as well.  You do not need to unlock specific jobs to have access to other jobs.  For example, all you need to do is drop 250 JP, and bam, you have access to mime.
• Only two units can buy any individual ability.  Innates do not count towards this.  For example, four units could have the Punch Art skillset, but only two could purchase Earth Slash; conversely, you can have two Samurais (which have innate Two Hands) and two Knights with Two Hands as their support.
• Only two units can equip any individual item.
• Unit names can be a maximum of 16 characters.
• Unit gender is male or female only, with monsters simply having to use "monster" (monsters are not in Arena at the moment).
• Leave any blank slots empty; as in, an empty line.
• Spell correctly.  Whilst it will probably be corrected when received, it will save people from doing extra work.  For example, Magic AttackUP is "Magic Attack UP", Move HP UP is "Move-HP Up", et cetera.
• The following team colours can be used:
  Black
  Blue
  Green
  Orange
  Purple
  Red
  White

Memory Card Generator
You may also use the Memory Card Generator below (requires Microsoft Excel 2007+). This allows you to save your teams, create memory cards to test them out and much more.

Team Builder (Google Sheet)
Alternatively for those without Excel, an Online Team Builder has been made, courtesy of Simmon. To be able to edit the sheet you must be logged into your Google account, then go into options: File > Make a copy. Once your team is finished, use the Export Team tab and paste it in this thread.

Patch 1.44b

Introduction
FFT: Arena is a tournament-style patch, which pits AI-controlled teams of 4 versus one another. Units are always level 35, make use of balanced versions of vanilla equipment, skills, and jobs, with some new ones, as well. The patch is strictly AI versus AI.

The primary goals of Arena are:
1) To create a balanced playing field for AI battles;
2) To ensure that players have fun whilst watching and making teams; and
3) To be a seamless system for a (future) singleplayer mode.

Installation
Patch a clean (vanilla) ISO with the PPF file that's within the RAR file at the end of this post.

PC
Use PPF-o-matic to patch the PPF, which is also included in the RAR file.
Known compatible emulators: ePSXe (2.0.2 recommended), pSX 1.13, DuckStation. The following are currently not compatible: PCSX-R and Mednafen.

Mac
OS 10.4+: Use the Multipatch tool found in the Tools wiki section.
OS 9: Use PPF-o-matic found in the Tools wiki section.
Known compatible emulators: openEMU, DuckStation. It's likely that you will need to update the CUE file to run the game properly. You may use this CUE Generator to automatically create a CUE compatible with the BIN file.

How to play (WIP)
Currently, the only way to play is to create a card file with the Memory Card Generator spreadsheet included in the download (requires Excel 2007 or higher). Pick teams or create your own, then generate the card and load the save file. This sends you to the Deep Dungeon, where you can select any map in the game to fight in an automated 4 vs 4 team battle. An update is in the works to allow creation of teams through the game.

FFT Arena / Limit Break tournament
September 26, 2017, 06:44:09 pm
What is a "Limit Break" tournament?
The Limit Break tournament is like a regular tournament, but all of the regular rules don't apply. You may be familiar with having no JP cap, but this goes beyond that.

- No JP limit
- No Brave/Faith limit. This goes both ways, so 00 to 100 Brave/Faith
- No item limit
- No ability limit

Of course you can still restrict yourself, but going beyond the limits is more than welcome.

Why do this?
One of the original goals of FFT Arena is to eventually make a single player (story mode) version. But in-game, there are no mechanics in place to limit what the player has access to and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to implement such a thing (except for the Brave/Faith limits). So, this tournament will simulate what a player can actually do. If this experiment is a success, I would like to have "seasons" of this just like the regular and SCC tournaments.

When does it start, when is the registration?
The registrations are now closed. You can find the matchups and list of teams a few posts below.

What is the format?
The format will be a double elimination.

Bugs and Suggestions / Ganesha suggestions
July 14, 2016, 10:07:40 pm
I have heard a Ganesha update is in the works. Having used Ganesha a lot recently, there are two things I feel should be changed:

+/- 20 button for UV coordinates
SE, SSE, SSW and SW are supposed to be read as SW, SSW, SSE and SE, in that order

FFT Arena / 5 units per team
March 09, 2015, 04:55:22 am
I had this idea while I ran a vanilla tournament on GameFAQs last year. It'd let you have 5 units in your team instead of 4. Normally it wouldn't be possible to have two teams of 5 units since the sprite limit on a map is 9 (the 10th person to appear on the map would glitch the majority of the time). To prevent this, the idea is to have a "leader sprite", which would be the same on both teams. It wouldn't go past the 9 sprites limit that way (8 generics + 1 unique sprite). Preferably this sprite would look gender neutral, so that players could have either a male or a female without making it look weird when they die. Something like that. I thought I would share this thought before I head to sleep.

Spriting / Knight with long hair (first sprite)
June 16, 2014, 04:18:35 am
I'm working on a generic Knight with long hair. I've only been working on the portrait since I figured this was the hardest part, and this is the result so far. No huge change from the original portrait, but I guess there's a start to everything. There are two versions, the one with side by side comparaison is the most recent one. The standalone is my first version.

Update: Added some more portraits and compiled them together.

Update 2: Added first sprite concept.

Update 3: Updated the sprites (mostly changed the cape symbol)

Update 4: Here's the knight in walking animation. Let me know what you think.

I'm aware of the hood still being here. Just want feedback on the hair.

Don't mind that white bar randomly appearing at the bottom...

Help! / Keeping ColorField after an event
February 04, 2013, 11:30:12 pm
Hello there, I'm a long time lurker and finally decided to post something. I was wondering, is there any way to keep the ColorField command after an event has ended? What I would like to do is have a battle where the background stays in a different color throughout a battle. This would give a particular atmosphere to the battle and I'd love to know how to do this if it can be done. I've tried a few things with EVSP but the field just reverts to normal as soon as the event ends.
