Title: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: LastingDawn on July 11, 2009, 05:10:46 pm
Alright, as explained in my "Progress in Mercenaries" topic I will be adding at least 40 new sidequests into the game (10 per chapter), but unfortunately I'm relatively creatively drained at the moment, so what do you all have in mind for sidequests you'd like to see? Sprite's are really no longer an issue, but if you do plan on involving a custom sprite, Please make sure that it's already finished. Here is the template I would like...

Quote from: "Example"Bounty Hunting Introduction

Activation Method - First time to the Warden's Office.

Area - Dorter Trade City

While trying to leave Dorter Trade City Gafgarion's troupe is stopped by a number of Knights claiming to be Bounty Hunters, and they'll invite you out on your first bounty mission. (You have a yes or no choice to this, if you just want to skip the introduction).

This will take you to Mandalia Plains, where the Knights and Gafgarion's Troupe will engage the Mad Mages family leaders, Mama and Papa. They'll explain about the Description of the Bounties holding their Bounty poster, and defeating them will earn you a Ticket for use at the Warden's Office for a prize.

After winning they thank you for a job well done.

Things like that, but try not to be Too specific for the activation. I am sure you all will come up with fantastic ideas for this!

Me First :)

Chapter 1

Bounty Hunt (again....)

Activation Method - First Time in Warden's Office

Area - Dorter Trade City

After returning to Dorter Trade City for the second time, the bounty hunters return and bump into the group again. This time they are going on a bounty hunt for a band of thieves hiding in Sweegy Woods. Most likely they are disguised. (Option shows up again, yes or no)

Team is taken to Sweegy Woods. There they meet the band of thieves (made up of a few travelers, 1 invoker, 1 cantor, and 1 knight). Based on which of the thieves are downed by Gaffy's team, the battle prizes will result as loot.

Once completed they return to Dorter to reclaim the award.

Chapter 1

Bounty Mark

Activation Method - After 2 sidequests are done

Area - Doter Trade City

After returning to Dorter, they bump into a man in strange clothes(LUSO) looking for a certain hunt. He asks if you want to join him. Yes or No.

He leads you to Lenalia Plateau, where you see a lone chocobo(BOCO) being hunted down by 2 behemoths and 1 behemoth king. Behemoths are 2 levels higher than party and king is 6. Boco becomes an ally who helps you out as you are going to save him, believing the behemoth king is the mark. After you finish the battle, Boco runs and you bring the corpse of the king. But it turns out that Boco is in fact the real mark, due to being Wiegraf's accomplice. You do get a reward from Luso for helping him though.

Sorry here is just a random thought for battle conditions.

Could you have it so that a battle only lasted a certain number of turns and then have it end, and the reward would just depend on the reward from the specific enemies you managed to kill in that time? Could make for a rather original battle set up.

Shit, that would be phenomenal...

By the way, is there a reason all of these are using Dorter Trade City, or did I miss something?

Dorter Trade is the first time the Fur Shop *cough* *cough* I mean the uh... Warden's Office first appears, in essence the second sidequest (Boomkick) can be done, but it would require you buying the ticket prize from the Warden's Office, to bring up a new screen that could sneak in the conditions for the event (ala, Deep Dungeon and Beowulf).

Now as for yours PX it would need an event instruction at the end of Boomkick's quest to know that there's another sidequest at Dorter. Also there is... really no reason to be using Dorter Trade explicitly, there will be more sidequests then Bounties. I'll try to include a Treasure Hunting quest (I have a rather sizable one planned for late chapter 3), as well as some protection missions along with Timed Missions, now to get to Cheetah's question...

You recall the original plans for the Bar events we spoke of the other day? Well, it's a very similar concept, low speed and when that unit's turn comes up the battle ends, immediately, through a midbattle event. Simple as that. So yes, that idea you mentioned can indeed be done Cheetah.

Also fellows, keep in mind, that you can place sidequests anywhere you'd like on the map, while the main quest is (because it's already written...) following the normal path, these sidequests can occur anywhere one wishes it to be so.

Chapter 2

Elder Brother?

Must go to Igros Castle before Aruguay Battle

Igros, map where Algus talks about his family history and Delita re-unites with Teta.

While shopping around at Igros, Ramza and Rad happen to get mistaken for thieves and taken to the Castle. While in prison, Gaffgarion comes and busts you out. While escaping, at said map a gate happens to be blocking your path. One of your inmates, a thief, knows how to pick the lock on the gate, but it will take some time. However, a shadow silhouette of Ramza's elder brother(Choose one or both) calls over some guards to capture them. And battle ensues.

Protect the thief until he gets his turn. As soon as he does, the battle ends and you run away. The thief thanks you for helping him escape, and runs off. Then Ramza has some a self conversation. Feel free to do whatever you want to this.

-EDIT LATER-

Interesting... but how do either Dycedarg or Zalbag not recognize their little brother? Or is it just an officer? Heh, Elder Brother... I'm curious to know what you do with this, alright sounds good. Though I'm afraid that this can't be done before Araguay, or trying to leave Igros would activate the event, now there is a way to make it so this event would occur if you try to buy something yet not have enough money while in Igros... Would fit the role of Thief pretty well.

Well, it's your story. It's just there to provide more back story. So feel free to edit it however you want. Also, it pretty much has to happen before Zirekile, to make more sense.

Also, I was thinking of an event, quite difficult to activate, which can only be activated if you get the "no items to sell" text from the Shopkeeper, where you become poor vagrants, for a while (two or three battles), and obtain a Treasure at the end of it. Of course I could be cruel and put it as a Chapter 4 quest, heh.... no, first chapter is fitting.

But would people find it worth it? This is selling your unique Enhancer sword after all.

Maybe a powered up enhancer could be the reward? You steal back the enhancer after some invokers buy it off the Shopkeeper?

Oh, nice idea, I don't know why I didn't think of that, or... could it be a choice? (Enhancer is the last connection Ramza has to Balbanes) Ramza despite a few changes to his character, is still Ramza, I think I'll let the player choose to take back the Enhancer or not (with repercussions for both choices later on)

Maybe a series of battle because Rad or Ramza falls in love, and does a series of stupid things for her. And then gets rejected right after.?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 12, 2009, 06:16:44 pm
Haha! It would be light hearted, Ramza is a bit closed in... but it could work, the girl would need to be interesting at least. Something other then beauty since Ramza is always well maintained, in that regards.

Wouldn't it be easier to give Rad the love interest? It could add an extra layer of dimension to his character...
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 12, 2009, 06:34:18 pm
Yes, yes it would be easier to give Rad the love interest, Ramza never seemed interested in such matters.
Title:
Post by: mav on July 12, 2009, 07:00:03 pm
Heh, you should borrow from A Midsummer Night's Dream--with Rad acting in Lysander's role, his love interest acting in Hermia's role, a suitor of hers acting as Demetrius, some other woman acting as Helena. This sidequest could easily be broken up into five or six quests, over the course of the four chapters. And it would obviously be fleshed out and reworked to fit within the confines of this project and the game itself...

I dunno, maybe this would be too obvious...or unconventional.

Ok edited version of above spoiler sidequest

Every Chapter

Hunted

Activation Method- For Chapter 1 it is already activated, the other Chapters it is activated midway and the completion of the previous event.

Location- There are 4 places where the encounter will take place. Igros, Zarghidas Trade City, Warjilis Trade City, and Riovanes Castle.

Events- Every time Gaffy's team enters the city listed above (when unlocked), they will encounter a unavoidable sidequest. A hooded figure will show up in all four places and teleport Gaffy's team (after some differing dialog per chapter) to a battle. They will be transported to Araguay Woods, Underground Colliery (where u fight Izlude), END in Deep Dungeon, and Graveyard of Airships, respectfully.

In each battle the hooded figure will summon Enemies Ramza, Rad, and Gafgarion, all at a higher level and gear. Gaffy's team will have to fight these "copy" mercenaries and the hooded figure and defeat them to win each sidequest.

Note: Every battle that in sues will be the same, enemy wise. Every battle will contain Ramza, Rad, and Gafgarion on both sides. Obviously the enemy side will be much much stronger.

After each defeat Gaffy's team will gain trophies and gil depending on the Chapter fought. Only the Chapter 4 battle will be set trophies and be extremely hard.

Title:
Post by: boomkick on July 13, 2009, 03:01:04 am
I think all sidequests now should be in spoiler so that some people wont be spoiled in playing the game.

Its a Trap!

Bervenia Volcano

Activation- First time Bervenia is opened up (as a random)

Event- Gaffy's team stumbles upon a scary woman that seems injured and surrounded by lava. The team then decides whether or not help her. If they choose no, they lose this sidequest forever. But if they choose yes, the next event continues.

When Yes is chosen, the woman will reveal herself as a witch that summons the undead to fight for her. She is a Reliquien* with a relic that cannot be obtained by the player. This relic (only said so by text) allows the witch to control the souls of those she defeated, and wish to add Gaffy's team to her collection. Eight Undead Units (Differing classes) are summoned and must be defeated with the witch.

Once defeated some short dialog resumes and an award is given.

Souds good, but as you said, Bervenia is pretty late, so it can wait until then, so far these are top quality, though. Good work everyone!

Though Mav, about Rad bein embroiled into a love story... it could only be for this chapter, as beyond that his emotional situation wouldn't really fit the jovial mood of said quest.

Any Chapter, but the rewards are better in later chapters.

Seduction pays a price...

Zarghidas Trade City

Activation: Anytime Zarghidas is opened up.

Event- This event is meant to be comedic. Really comedic.

Ramza says hes going for a walk after leaving Rad and Gafgarion in the bar at the city.

During that walk three beautiful women (dancer sprites can be used) run up to him and start crowding around him, talking sexy or telling him he's cute or some shit like that. After a bit of dialog they run away and Ramza finds that his gil was stolen. Ramza chases them to Finath River and more funny dialog in sues. Then the battle starts and Ramza must finish one of them off before they run away (As said that a unit with VERY SLOW speed can be the time limit.

If Ramza downs one of them, the rewards will be given in full according to the chapter, and more funny dialog in sues. If not... well... Ramza loses a lot of gil... haha.

Ramza then heads back to the bar, gil or no gil, and tells Gafgarion and Rad what happened. Funny dialog all around because Rad and Gafgarion got drunk.

Chapter 4
Area - Gariland Magic City
Activation Method - Enter Gariland Magic City
Ramza and co. reminisce about the first time they met each other at the military academy. Ramza decides to visit the military academy to see Master Daravon, only to find that he is very ill. He begs you to find a rare herb that can be used as medicine for his illness. He says that the herb may be found in either the Araguay Woods or the Yuguo Woods.

Araguay Woods - You enter the woods and see a group of Reliquians and/or Gamblers searching for the herb. They find it and talk about selling it for a lot of money. Ramza (alone, unless the group also wants to help Ramza save Daravon) explains why he needs the herb and offers to buy it from them, but the Reliquians want to fight for it (after, it's 4v1 / 8v3).

All enemies are Reliquians/Gamblers. If Ramza alone, 4 Reliquians/Gamblers, if it's the whole gang, 8 Reliquians/Gamblers. Make one enemy the 'leader' - give him rare equips (all rare equips?), maintenance, Party Level +15, mastered base class (ex. leader is Reliquian, he has Reliquian mastered). The other enemies are Party Level +5 or same as Party Level and are normal Reliquians/Gamblers.

You get the herb and some other war trophies/loot as you deem appropriate for defeating the Reliquian/Gambler squad.

Yuguo Woods (actually, where would be a place that can act as a monster's den/lair kind of place? Nelveska? Not sure if Yuguo Woods would be best here) - Ramza and co. enter Yuguo Woods and search for the herb. They find the herb (near the middle of the map, preferably), but a lot of monsters show up and surround the troupe. Turns out they've stepped on a monster's territory. (Oh wait, there aren't many monsters in Mercs. Maybe a surviving family, I guess?) They have to fight their way out.

Ramza and co. start off near the middle of the map, surrounded by either 3-4 really strong monsters (Party Level +20ish, maybe ??? stats?), or 6-9 not as strong monsters (Party Level +0-10). If this is a monster family, have 1 or 2 monsters be the 'leader,' give them ??? stats + maybe an extra skill or something.

You get the herb and some loot, Gaff remembers hearing of a wanted group of monsters, talks about confirming if it's the same group that they just defeated.

I like it! This is good to tie in Daravon, as Gafgarion and Daravon are also old friends. Should the quest depend on which one you went to for the result? Or would you prefer they both be the same thing?

Sure, sure. Before I even submit a sidequest idea, I'll probably have to read through a couple Mercenaries topics to get a better understanding of the game, cause the idea I mentioned earlier would really take too many quests to pan out in one chapter.

EDIT: I tried making a sidequest (it's completely unrelated to a Rad love story). Feel free not to use it--it's a rather lame throwback to Final Fantasy I.
Chapter 3

Citadel of Trials

Activation Method - Must go to Gariland before going to the Nelveska Temple

Area - Gariland Magic City

While stopping at Gariland, Rad and Ramza overhear a group of people discussing an elusive item known as the Rat's Tail.  They learn that this item is hidden in Nelveska Temple and can grant mortals unchecked power, and that a Sage (to be named--possibly Sarda) will pay greatly for it. The two decide whether they'll retrieve the item for the wizard and reap the monetary benefit.

If they decide to go find they item, this will take them to Nelveska Temple, where they engage in a fight with a series of difficult enemies (who are all at least 12 levels higher) and one wizard who also seeks the Rat's Tail.

Defeat the wizard (though there may be greater rewards for defeating the monsters as well) and the battle immediately ends. Once he is defeated the two walk into the title and retrieve the Rat's Tail and deposit it back at Gariland. The Sage thanks them for their endeavor and grants them something. I was thinking some skill or technique that couldn't be received otherwise, but that'd be your call, LD, provided you actually want to use this sidequest.

Chapter 2

Old Memories Die Hard

Arrive at Fort Zeakden after Zirekile, but before Zaland.

Zeakden(duh)

After meeting up with Delita, Ramza decides to head back to Zeakden due to a nightmare. Upon arriving, Ramza starts to have a bad memory. The player is then asked if they want to revisit it. Yes or No.

Yes- Ramza is teleported back to the Zeakden battle, with the same quotes like the beginning battle. However, Rad and Gaffgarion assist you as well as Delita, but Algus  and team are stronger, and have more back up. Battle ensues. When you win, Ramza is finally able to conquer his nightmare, and gets revived back at the present by Rad. After a conversation about Ramza's well being, Ramza sees a glint of light on the ground. He digs the object up, and he finds the Traitor Bow, used by Algus.

No- Ramza wanders around some more, and he finds an object on the floor. It happens to be a lock of hair, and suddenly Ramza pasts out. He's sent to a dream where he finds Delita digging a hole in the snow, with Teta's corpse about to be buried. Ramza has to decide whether to talk to him, or to just watch.

Watch- Delita finishes burying Teta, and writes a quote above her grave. As he stands there mourning the loss of his sister, suddenly he gets surrounded by survivors of the Death Corps/Brigade. Ramza rushes out to save him, but Delita is unable to recognize him, being blinded by his tears for his sister. 8v2 battle ensues. After dispatching of all the foes, Delita thanks Ramza, hands him an item symbolizing his status as a Cadet for the Hokuten, and walks away. Ramza takes the item, and watches him wander off. Rad then revives Ramza, and asks if he's OK. Ramza says he's fine, and then Rad asks where Ramza got the item, and makes a remark on it.

Talk to him- Ramza gathers the courage to talk to Delita, going to check up if he's alright. Delita, being blinded by his tears, sees Ramza and thinks he is another noble/Death Brigade survivor. Delita brings out his sword, and prepares to attack Ramza. Due to Delita's hatred, he has learned Crush Punch. Ramza must now take down Delita and talk some sense into him. Battle ensues, and ends when one of the duelers fall.

Defeat Delita- Delita is on the floor knocked out. Ramza feels remorse about his action here, and decides to help Delita. He finishes digging the grave for Teta, and brings flowers next to the grave. He allows Delita to bury his sister, and before he leaves, he leaves behind an object to help Delita after he awakens. Ramza is revived by Rad, and is questioned by Rad. Ramza pushes him away, and rushes to where he dug the grave. He then digs up the item he left behind, and finds a quote left in the snow on Teta's grave, written by Delita.

Defeated by Delita- Meh... my brain stopped working here. Have fun with this part LD.

A truly fantastic idea! It helps characterize Ramza very well, as well I'll probably change the Zeakden fight then, to end rather then win, in the game's intro.

As for Delita... probably a Delita monologue and the ability to open a unique Historical Record that Hedin can read.

Quote from: "LastingDawn"I like it, nice throwback only thing though...

Is there will probably be a choice to keep the Rait Tail or run back to give it to the Sage
That's your call, LD. I feel that there should that both sides should have their benefits, but no one is greater than the other.

Well, the Rat Tail is a treasure, so returning it would have to have a great prize in return (I would like a Unique skill), it's not impossible to have that, if I make it a battle scenario that ends when the Sages turn comes up, with two crystals for Rad and Ramza.

Hey, if you could make it work, that'd be perfect. The Treasure/Artefacts were so neat in FFT, I'd love to see them get some more honorable mentions in this patch.

If you don't mind, I'll work on another possible sidequest, but this will be for the "Excalipoor" Treasure. If it's okay, I wanna make it a 3-parter, with one part in each of the first three chapters. It'll be another throwback, but a little more fleshed out...

Really really big sidequest. Long read...

Chapter 4

Trails of God (Memories)

Activation Method- Before the last concluding battle.

Location (Start)- Nelveska* Temple

Event- Ramza and the group visit Nelveska Temple (again maybe). Gaffy's team gets a bad feeling about this, but Ramza decides to check it out, even though he was warned that something was bound to happen in that temple. Ramza's team enter the temple, and a lightning storm appears.

The team will be lead to the place where Ramza fights Kletian. They look around and see a harsh atmosphere and can hear the thunderstorm outside. Rad warns again that it might be dangerous inside and wants to head back outside. He does, and leaves Gaffy and Ramza alone.

They exit through the top portion where Kletian starts out and appears. They are then transported into where Balk was fought. They try to cross the bridge, but a flash (Blind 2), goes off. When its over, Gafgarion is gone. Ramza is now alone.

Razma walks on calling Rad and Gaffy's name, when he spots a crystal. This crystal then beckons him closer. Ramza, unable to control himself, approaches the crystal, and touches it. The crystal then says, "Welcome to your death, The Trial of Memories.

Then it flashes out into character setup. This will happen after every battle. A save will be asked for. Advice would be to take it.

Note: Every Battle takes place in the TERMINATE. Every battle completed Ramza walks down. (He starts at the top, enemy at the bottom). If there are not enough battle spaces for such, then the Map will be from Nogias to End, no need to find exit panels.

First Battle- An "Undead" (looks, but not is) is summoned, not normal mind you, but one from his memories. This time... its one of his... younger colors. He is strong, yet a few levels lower the our protagonist. Beatable. He is, in a sense, immortal. But he does not have ???.

Second Battle- Another "Undead" is summoned, this time it is Rad, on equal level with Ramza. His magic is strong, yet he is beatable.

Third Battle.- Again, an "Undead" is summoned. But this time it is Gafgarion. He is stronger then you, but again he is beatable.

Fourth Battle-Seventh Battle- All this battles will be one-on-one with a major story driven character in Ramza's memories, most will be allies. But the major battles comes at the Eighth.

Final Battle- This time, Ramza yells in fury of how much more torture he must go through from fighting with his memories. He is answered....

by himself.

A Second Ramza appears (Evil/Dark looking). Dialog in sues and Ramza is thrown into battle. But before anyone can move, Ramza's memories return, and this time aid in the fight. Only four of them appear, Rad, Gafgarion, Delita, and Ramza in his younger colors. They all know abilities that they shouldn't because of the power they gained in this area.

The fight resumes with Evil Ramza. He has ??? stats and is very powerful. He knows dark abilities, some even from all of Ramza's allies. Different music plays? (i always loved One Winged Angel, makes the battle seem epic).

Once the battle is over, Evil Ramza explodes with the stone explosion animation (red). And Ramza's memories (allies) disappear. Some dialog comes around from... us?

Boomkick- WHAT? He beat the Trials! Impossible!
LastingDawn- Well you made the dungeon, and he won it fair and square.
Ramza- What? Who's arguing?
Boomkick- That is not true, he had help in the end. I bet this last trial was glitched, his memories appeared and helped him. That is not what the trial was meant to be!
LastingDawn- So? it was interesting, who cares if its a glitch. Just give him his reward.
Boomkick- ...
Boomkick- I refuse.
LastingDown- Do it or I'm going to get my ****ing BANHAMMER.
Boomkick- OK OK! I'm scared. Here you go Ramza. Thanks for playing.

Ramza then appears outside and is attended to by Rad and Gafgarion. They ask what happened, but all Ramza can say is....

"I need a drink"

Hmm, this is a very serious quest though, also I'm not quite a fan of breaking the fourth wall, the way you display it would seem redundant to activate all at once, for something like this it would be best to split it up, this is how I can view it...

First Chapter
First Battle - Restoring Humility (Personified in Cadet Ramza)

Second Battle - Restoring Honesty (Personified in Rad)

Prize - An unusable shard of White Materia

Third Battle - Restoring Enthusiasm (Personified in Ramza)

Fourth Battle - Restoring Devotion (Personified in Alicia)

Prize - An unusable shard of White Materia

Fifth Battle - Restoring Passion (Personified in Lavian}

Sixth Battle - Restoring Self-Confidence (Personified in Agrias}

Prize - An unusable shard of White Materia

Seventh Battle - Restoring Selflessness (Personified in Delita)

Eighth Battle - Restoring Optimism (The opposite of Dark Ramza)

Prize - the last shard needed to use the White Materia

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't really want to use the "allies coming to help, in memory" scenario again, I think it can only be used once, and it makes more sense for it to be in his memories at Zeakden rather then in a sidequest which adds a bit of character, but nothing like the shattered soul he is in Chapter 1.

Also the name might be a bit unfitting... other then that, looks great!

Well LD, as promised.

The Mad Doctor's Request

Chapter 2-3

Location: Barius Valley

Activation: Go to Lionel Castle After Visiting Goug.

Upon entering Lionel, the Trio are met by an odd old man, looking for "nethicite". The Man insists the trio have knowledge of it and demand to by given a sample. He then digresses and offers you a large monentary reward for finding such an item deep within Barius Valley. Gafgarian and Ramza both agree, but Rad is hesitant. You are given the option of taking this quest on or not. If so, you arrive in Barius Valley to find the old man and 4 Warders. The man reveals himself as Dr. Cid. The warders should have the names Rook 1, 2, 3 and 4. Cid explains that if you will not surrender the manufactured nethicite, he will take it by force. Cid should be a high leveled Inquisitor with some rare equipment. He has a gun force equiped. The warders' AI is set to protect him.  You will have the trio, and a Traveler helping you against him. (Name the traveler Balthier and i will jump for Joy, LD.)  You win after defeating Cid. The reward should be a higher tier Bec de Corbain or Bullets and a decent amount of cash.

Alright, here is my three-part sidequest, featuring a beloved staple of the FF series:
Epic of Gilgamesh, pt. 1

Ch. 1

Activation Method - Go to Thieves' Fort for the first time

Area - Thieves' Fort

When entering the Fort, the party witnesses two men about to take battle. One of the men is a Traveler named Gil (although he may need a custom-named job), who intends to keep the other man from terrorizing shepherds in Gallione. The other is a Wild Man named Enkidu, who intends to kill Gil to prove his strength and fulfill a contractual obligation. Gil beckons for Ramza to save him (a battle will take place but you have the option to save Gil or not. Deciding not to save Gil yields no rewards and ends this quest and the possibility of the other two parts of this sidequest).

The goal of the battle is to protect Gil and defeat Enkidu. If you choose to save Gil, when the battle ends Gil will spare Enkidu's life, and the two become mutual allies (of each other).  If you choose save Gil and he dies, Enkidu will admit that Gil was a worthy adversary, the battle ends, and you fail this sidequest.  If you choose not to save Gil and he dies, you still must finish the fight but you fail the quest. If you choose not to save Gil but he survives, Gil will thank you but you still fail the quest.

After winning properly Ramza will be paid a generous sum by Gil and Enkidu, who hope to meet with Ramza again.

Epic of Gilgamesh, pt. 2

Ch. 2

Activation Method - Go to Araguay Woods, Epic of Gilgamesh pt. 1 MUST be completed

Area - Araguay Woods

Upon entering the Woods, the party sees Enkidu and Gil.  They claim that they intend to cut some "great trees", but must defeat the Guardian of Araguay Woods (named Humbaba) before they can do so.   Ramza has the choice of helping them out of the good of his heart or helping them for a sum.

Regardless of which decision you choose, the goal of the battle is defeat all the monsters and Humbaba (a monster who is 10 lvls higher than the party).   Humbaba is Immortal Flagged.

After winning, Enkidu mandates that Gil finishes off the beast.  Gil is reluctant, but does so and Enkidu is cursed by Humbaba before Gil proceeds to kill the creature. Regardless of the option Ramza chose, Gil and Enkidu pay him a sum (it'll be more if you choose not to be paid).  And they hope to see Ramza again one day.  As long as the enemy is defeated, this sidequest is fulfilled (choosing to be paid does not affect the outcome of this sidequest, aside from gil received).

Epic of Gilgamesh, pt. 3

Ch. 3

Activation Method - Go to the Thieves' Fort, Epic of Gilgamesh, pt. 2 MUST be completed

Area - Thieves' Fort

When the party enters the Fort, they are greeted halfheartedly by Gil, who shares tales of his great adventures (including a story about a "Bull of Heaven") but quickly laments that Enkidu has grown ill.  Enkidu curses his illness and dies on the spot.  Gil becomes fearful that he too may die, and claims that he will go find the Excalibur (which he calls an "Elixir of Life") and asks Ramza if he will join (a yes or no option is given.  If "no" is chosen, then Gil will thank Ramza for saving his life in days past and the sidequest ends, without any prize).

If "yes" is chosen the next scene will be at Bervenia Volcano, where the party faces a large enemy, as opposed to a group (the enemy may be named "Deluge").  The goal is to defeat this enemy.

After winning, Gil searches the body and finds what appears to be a legendary sword, but it isn't the Excalibur.  Gil offers Ramza the weapon (which is the Treasure/Artefact, Excalipoor) and a large sum as consolation prizes for enduring these times with him.

That ends the Epic of Gilgamesh...I was hoping the Excalipoor could be equipped, like the Longibunne and/or used in a manner akin to the Draw Out skill.  If this sidequest is made, there'll be some hefty dialog...I'd be willing to help on that part, if LD so wishes.

To expand on Mav's last comment, turn Excalipoor into a drawout that is basically a Gilgamesh summon with random damage from 0 to whatever and I would be quite thrilled.

Hmm, that's a rather serious take on the FF character who's renowned for his comic relief. Enkidu is neccessary to Gilgamesh's character at first, but keep in mind in FF continuity he always had the Excalipoor but never drew it until his fourth fight with the party. I'm not comfortable with saying that he found Excalipoor, but rather I think he should have it from the start, just not equipped. Gilgamesh in FF is a sword collector it would appear, also what of his transformation? We do have a sprite for that, though admittedly it's not... the best.

Though I like the premise, not so sure about the map though...
This has more the feel of Lenalia rather then Thieves Fort, I feel.

Hmm... it's kind of plain, though I'd guess it's based off of the actual legend rather then anything from the FF Universe, I find it strange though that you don't fight Gilgamesh at all, normally every FF game where he's seen, he's normally fought at least once, eh well... nice subversion to that, I suppose

Most treasures from FFT have made it in as equippable items, (See the complete list in the Mercenaries Equipment Thread, most things with"???" for their stats are Treasures) Though the one thing I don't like is all the options that really only have one choice, people wouldn't be searching for sidequests if they didn't want to do them, hehe. Did you want Gilgamesh to show up anywhere else, if you had completed his sidequest?

Heh, I'm afraid one Bunansa is enough for a mission, since it can't actually be The Dr. Cid, after all. I am personally thinking that the two options should have an impact, if you agree to help him, you fight another group he hired to get it back for him, who planned on simply making off with the treasure. Afterwards you return and give him the "manufacted nethicite", which he in return gives the group a Lifeshaver, Mythril Shield, and Chancellor's Cap.

If you disagree, he tells them all to watch their backs, and if they should happen to find any Nethicite, he wouldn't be far behind. After he stomps off screen, a number of varied people come up and show a poster of Dr. Cid, saying he's wanted in Gallione, Fovoham, and Lionel for mysterious deaths attributed to his "studies". As Ramza is about to say something, Gafgarion cuts in saying they hadn't seen him. Satisfied the assorted bounty hunters leave them alone, Gafgarion says "this is their chance!" and they track Dr. Cid to Barius Valley, as he just dispatched most of the very people he had sent to get the Nethicite (in this chain we never see that's only because they tried to make off with it for their own).

The four warders named Rook1, 2, 3, 4 (will probably have Astra, at all times, to signify their different then normal humans)
and Dr. Cid proceed to fight Gafgarion''s troupe and the two remaining survivors of the first team he sent out. Victory allows you to catch Dr. Cid, and bring him to the Warden's Office for a valuable ticket (Normal Treasure "The Leading Man", Rare Treasure "Grenade" for the gun.

Any Chapter

Training Duel

Activation Method- After a critical battle.

Location- Mandalia Plains.

Event- Gafgarion asks Ramza to a duel to see if has gotten any better.

Simple sidequest where a battle in sues between Gaffy and Ramza.

If Ramza wins he gets a good sword to advance himself with some dialog.

If Ramza loses, he gets a small amount of gil.

Just a random thought from an onlooker; I do not find one on one battles to be very interesting at all, but perhaps that is due to the ones I have faced. It usually just resorts to facing a stronger enemy than yourself and bringing lots of evasion and hoping for the best. Or you make the enemy weaker than you and well, it's just easy. I dunno, I guess they can be done well and made fun, but I just thought I would throw that in from a 'fans perspective' or what have you :P

For the most part though these are really interesting/creative and I'm enjoying reading everybody's thoughts and LD's reactions.

Simple and meaningful, I quite like it, probably late chapter 2 or early chapter 3, if I were to guess.

In Mercenaries I have Strived to cut down Evasive bonuses (plus there's no -stat skills in Mercenaries, there is Foxbird, but good luck relying on that, also keep in mind, less Fury a unit has, the less damage you can do to them.

Let's see... in Mercenaries...

The shield with the best evasion is the Mad Emperor which is 50 - 40, if you're hit once while weilding it though you go Berserk, so not too reliable..

Runner up is Palamecia Plate, 35 -35 which has permanant Dark Matter on it (which might be a good combination when combined with some other Dark Matter items...)

The safest one to use is only 30 - 30, which for a shield isn't too fantastic...

Though for the others they remain the same 35 P. Ev. on one and 40 M. Ev. on another... that could be a problem, though Voldemort worked hard at making Vormav to be unique 1.3028, I can try to emulate that with the 1v1's when they occur, the absence of Abandon though really hurts Evasion based setups, I would beleve though.

Well LD, it is your patch, and besides, I like your senario better.

Hah, I guess it's the prerogative of the player to make these pseudo-choices then.

Oh, and I was thinking about Gilgamesh returning...By the way, should he be called Gil in the sidequests or Gilgamesh--I'm still toying with whether I should be blatantly obvious or not...So yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing him return, but I personally don't have anything planned for him...But if anyone else wants to use him or even Enkidu in their sidequests, go right ahead.

By the way, thanks for being so receptive, LD. For creating patch as ambitious as this one, you're surprisingly open to other peoples' thoughts.

Gil might be appropriate, I can even see Gafgarion saying something along the lines of...

"Hah! You can't go wrong helping a man named Gil! Money is not far behind this man, I say we watch this man carefully and assist him where he may need us."

Though when he transforms (whenever that will be...) he would then be called Gilgamesh, I would think when he reveals Excalipoor he would give a grandoise speech, revealing himself to be "Gilgamesh".

As far as patch creation goes, I always try to have people's opinions and ideas, without the ideas I've received in the forum, I think the project would be just a mess, most of my quality skill ideas have been from the community after all, heh, to be honest I wouldn't be much of anywhere without you all, so I rely mostly on the community, in which you all have been very thoughtful in your many suggestions.

Wow, that Gafgarion line is perfect! And Gilgamesh revealing his name at the end would be worthwhile for this side-character. To have a revelation like that shows great development on his part, as well as a good nod to fans of the series.

Anyway, earlier I mentioned that other people could use either of the characters in this sidequest, I'd just like to note that if anyone does wanna put Gil or Enkidu in their sidequests, it should take place before the first part of this sidequest. I mean, in the real Epic of Gilgamesh Enkidu does act as a sort of bounty hunter, so if anyone wants to exploit that aspect of his character, be my guest. However, Enkidu does die in the third part, so don't plan on using him after that either...Gil is still fair game, hell, make him a treasure hunter of sorts.

Chapter 4

Duel for Apprenticeship

Zirekile Falls

Event: Gaffgarion decides to move his skills to an apprentice. However, he cannot decide between Rad and Ramza. So he decides to have them duel each other. Two choices: Heartily agree, or just decide to go on with it unsure. If Ramza heartily agrees, Rad is the one doesn't feel sure about it, but decides to go on with it. If you don't feel sure but agree, Rad heartily agrees with it. So you have a duel on the bridge of Zirekile, Rad vs Ramza. However! You control Rad if you heartily agree with Ramza. If you choose the other option, you control Ramza in the duel. Battle ends when one falls, and blah blah text comes out. Maybe whoever wins the duel gets their master job, while the other one must get it through other means. And you have control over who wins the power.

Hmm I'm afraid the role of Apprentice to Gafgarion is actually a large part of the later story, because of that, this wouldnt fit the theme of that time. Also I can't quite unlock jobs through such ways... if I could, I would definitely have use that, rather then job levels.

Zack is involved somewhere in Mercenaries. Come by in chat and ask him yourself. Anyways...

Chapter 1

Fire! Fire!

Somewhere appropriate(Forest or town preferred)

Walk to designated area

Bombs and invokers are setting fire to the area! Stop them! Standard FFTA mission... However! There will be random corpses of people/chocobos. During the course of the battle, they will litter the field. Now you can go the Mercenary style and just ignore them, killing everything in sight. However, Ramza's nature would cause him to try to save them all. Mission is to stall until the police/guards come and clean up. Your rewards depend on how many people/chocobos you save. It's good to be nice for a change, eh?

Chapter 1(2?)

Ramza needs a better sense of direction...

Sweegy Woods

Walk into Sweegy Woods sometime you want

The team camps out at Sweegy Woods, and Ramza is sent to gather firewood. He once AGAINS stumbles onto the battle royal in the forest, but a new host now runs it. If the player has managed to win Longibunne from the first one, then the new host will not have the Longibunne. If the player failed to grab it the first time, this will be a second chance to get it. And the opponents will be stronger, of course.

Chapter 4 is a pretty heavy spot, a lot of things are going on, and really Chapter 4 is where I'd like to tie up most of the sidequests, mainly Chapter 4 is reserved for the end of the main sidequest chains. (any new ones would ruin the mood that Chapter 4 is meant to bring about) Though this would fit in fine with Chapter 3. So we'll use it there.

This could be a bit tricky, it does display Ramza's character, but this is no easy feat, the only way I can think of to have this work is each corpse when revived, and their turn comes around, will have their ID switch to one that gives a War Trophy. Then of course a bystander sort of unit which acts as a timer for the end of the mission. I'd say this event alone would take up seven or eight event scripts, hmm... i will be considered, but it is a Ton of work.

Hmm... this is a tricky one to decide on, personally I dislike using the same ideas again and again, but on the other hand it does offer another chance at Longibunne... I think a different gimmick, would be best, but I can't think of what... do you happen to have any idea for it?

You know...I noticed a lot of these sidequests are chances at gaining an awesome item (like the Longibunne)...what if losing a battle meant losing an awesome item? As in, you won the Longibunne once, now you gotta defend it. It's a bitch slap to the person playing, but it ups the stakes, right?

Love's Lost Labors
Any Chapter, I suppose

Ramza and co. enter Dorter and encounters a young lady who asks them if they've encountered a young man by the name of Rangar. Ramza responds that they haven't seen him. The woman worries that he's been kidnapped and asks the party to help find him. Gafgarion demands payment, and the woman mentions that she is one of "Dorter's Wealthiest". The lady mentions that he was last seen heading towards Sweegy Woods. She asks the party to look there.

At Sweegy, Ramza and co. see a man acting suspicious. They come up to him, and a trap is activated. The man reveals that he is Forza, a bounty hunter. He states that his wife, Magissa, tricks people into entering the woods so that he can ambush them and steal their goods. Magissa enters the area, and seeing Ramza's gil pouch, exclaims how rich they'll both be.

Gafgarion then enters the area and frees Ramza and co. from the trap. Forza and Magissa then notice the escaped party and begin to battle.

Enemy Units
1x Forza (Berserker) (Monk with high ATK, HP, and Speed)
1x Magissa (Enchantress) (Oracle with high level debuffs and moderate level elemental magic)
2x Archer
2x Thief

After the battle is over, Gafgarion scolds Ramza on how easily manipulated he is.

Duncan's Disciples
Chapter 2 or 3?
Activation: Walking through Fovoham [But really, the windmill shed is the battle map!]

The mercenaries are passing by the Windmill Shed [Duncan's Cabin] when they encounter three Monks. The two weaker looking Monks are currently training with one another while their Master,  Duncan lectures them on their form. He praises young Sabin for doing well, and his son Vargas shows his jealousy through biting remarks towards Sabin.

The monks spot the party walking through and Duncan sees a perfect opportunity to train his disciples against a new enemy. He comments on how the Mercenaries look very powerful and asks if they would help the brawlers in their training (I thought about him just initiating the battle but I think Duncan seemed like a nice guy, probably wouldn't do that...).

The party is a little reluctant but Gafgarion inquires as to what's in it for them. Duncan offers a reward should the Mercenaries best them (be it cash, or some rare claws, armor, whatever you think!) in battle.

Gafgarion comments on how the two young disciples look like they shouldn't be too much trouble and agrees to the battle. Vargas replies in an aggressive manner about how he will prove to his father that he is superior to Sabin and more worthy of being his successor and Sabin comments on how this is an opportunity to better himself and further his training. Duncan enters the battle as well in order to show his pupils how a Master fights.

Enemy Units (I don't care about the levels/abilities, the point is just to show that Duncan is much better than his two apprentices, and that Vargas and Sabin are relatively equal in ability)

1x Sabin Figaro [Party level +5 monk]
1x Vargas Harcourt [Party level +5 monk]
1x Duncan Harcourt [Party level +15 monk]

When the party wins the battle Vargas says something snide about how they just got lucky and Duncan scolds his behaviour. He hands over the reward and thanks the Mercenaries for their help.

As the party walks away Sabin stops Ramza and says he senses a kindred spirit (since they are indeed both running away from their status/nobility) and asks if Ramza has traveled far and abroad. Ramza says that they have been traveling a long while. Sabin asks if they have come to a land called Figaro and met a man named Edgar? Ramza replies that unfortunately they have not and Sabin is disheartened.

Sabin thanks the party for everything and wishes them well on their journey. (I thought about throwing in a line like "well if you see him, tell him his brother is doing well" or something but that's kinda cheesy, heh heh. Of course we know Ramza never would meet Edgar, hence his surprise at seeing Sabin alive and well in FFVI, so the line could still work if you like it!)

There is a way, but it's a bit... complicated, as there is no event instruction to receive or take away an item, I would have to be creative with it... I would have to make a scenario that when Ramza falls another event plays out, that brings him back wth 1 HP, but forces the Longibunne to be equipped to him, and shut out Equip Change, then also change the enemy to have a skill which breaks a weapon 100% and damages, basically guaranteeing failure after you've fallen. But I'm not sure if a stuck on Longibunne through the ENTD would count fully as the Longibunne item, that would need a bit of testing. Of course, I can easily just end the game if you lose.

Ouch, what a decision... that is a bit of a difficult one, hehe... but it adds emotional depth, which Mercenaries is (hopefully) in no short supply, I like it, it makes you feel as if you have a measure of control over events. Though I'm not pretty curious to know the add-on to this particular quest

Well, eh heh... choosing time for items, ended a bit of time ago, but we have a lot of items, just check over at the "Equipment in Mercenaries" thread. Though this is an interesting event and will make good use of the panel based events, which are in short supply in the normal game. Mustadio is in Mercenaries but... his relationship with the party is purely story, he's doing too many different things at different times to associate in sidequests (it's the equivalent of putting Lavian, Alicia, or Agrias into one of them).

Whoa! Talk about a great throwback, the bounty hunters, Forza and Magissa, they seemed as if they were going to play a competent challenge to the party, a shame that they're dead after one battle, they could have been much more interesting, but I guess there's no use in complaining with that. Only thing I can't say I like 100% about this is the exposition when the actions of the characters make that pretty clear. This event can actually occur when you have over a certain amount of gil, if you'd like (0-65,535), it would make a bit more sense, rather then Magissa exclaiming about Ramza's money pouch when he has... 500 gil. Looks great though! Is this a chain, or is it just a single quest?

Simply a shame that we can't get custom sprites, for any of these three, though I suppose the Berserker sprite would work for Vargas, but what of Duncan? His child's black, but we never see Duncan himself and his wife is white. I can only assume that means Duncan himself is black as well, would be nice to have a custom sprite of him and Sabin, but eh well... a special palette for the Monk might just be able to pull that off for Sabin. The ending is fitting, though a bit of a mind trip... does that mean the world of FF6 is right over there in Romanda? Bah, it's just a little nod, no harm meant. In any case, how does the Survivor sound as a reward from the quest?

Looking great everyone! This pace is fantastic!

Nice VI reference, Beowulf. I actually just thought of another sidequest, myself, actually.

Vagrant of Twilit Mercy
Last Chapter

Ramza enters Deep Dungeon after the defeat of Elidibus. At the top of the platform in END, a man teleports into the area.

Enigmatic Man:
Ah, 'tis you, Darkbane. At long last have I come to see the mercy of Light's liberation!

Ramza:
Who are you? What purpose have you in this forlorn island?

Enigmatic Man:
I do not fear the Dark, nor do I herald the Light. I am... a shadow. A shadow forged by the brightest light, and I am the darkest shadow. A walker of the nether, if you will.

Ramza:
I sense... nothingness. But, it's the same feeling I felt when I defeated Elidibus...

Enigmatic Man:
I am Dammerung, keeper of Midlight's Deep, watcher of these haunted flights! The Hero-Mage surrounded this island in his unholy darkness. Freed now from that torment, I shall free you from your flesh, that you may never know the same power as He!

Then, the battle begins.

 Enemy Units
Dammerung x1 (Twilight Walker*)

Dammerung:
My defeat is nigh, but you... are different. I sense in you... an urgency. You rush to your death. But as a bull rushes through a forest, trees rent, you rush through ought that is wrong in Ivalice. But... death is a paling to stop all. Even the most noble of endeavors...

Ramza:
I do what I can, 'tis the Beoulve name!

Dammerung:
Names... mean naught in the eyes of the lady Death! Know this... there are... (dies)

Ramza:
What is this place? Why do the spirits of the strong gather here...? Mayhap I shall never know. (Ramza leaves)

*The Twilight Walker could have spells like Banish, Terror, and All-Ultima just to make him nigh impossible to defeat. Invincibility, FTW!

I suppose if you did win, you could get the Black Materia or something of the sort. It just kinda keeps the air of mystery about Midlight's Deep.

As far as F&M are concerned, I would kinda like it to be a chain. They could get revenge of some sort. After all, you never actually see them die...

Quote from: "Eternal248"Nice VI reference, Beowulf.

Eh heh... it's not quite Elidibs you fight at the bottom of the Deep Dungeon in Mercenaries, while it is an interesting idea (is this fellow from another game?) it's hard to say if it could work optimally, though I can't really reveal who you fight at the bottom, as it's a surprise. I think it might be best to leave most Deep Dungeon dealings alone for the moment. Alright, if you'd like a chain, just say how long you'd like it to go for and make additions to it as needed.

Well, for F&M, I'd like about 3 bouts with them.

The first could be in the mission I detailed above.

The second could be at Lenalia Plateau. The hunter couples are attempting to poach a Dragon and Ramza and his PETA ways attempt to stop them.

Enemy Units
1x Forza (Berserker)
1x Magissa (Enchantress)
2x Chemist (at top of hill with guns)
1x Ninja (with Use Hand)
1x Thief (with Use Hand)

Guest Units
1x Dragon

The third (and last) time you face them is at Zirekile Falls after reading a Rumor:

"Monster hunters are gathering everywhere at this, the beginning of egg-laying season! Unisex monsters everywhere are hatching new babies, so what better time to poach 'em? Interested parties are being asked to come to Zirekile Falls if they are interested."

Ramza, once again going into Righteous Mode, decides to go to Zirekile and give the hunters a good talking to! Once Ramza enters the area, he is struck by a poison arrow, causing him to be poisoned at the start of the battle.

Magissa reveals that the rumor was a trap, and that it was to get Ramza out into the open to kill him, once and for all. Ramza comments on how life, no matter how menial, is still important. (Hypocrite, you kill monsters AND people) He then goes into battle.

Enemy Units
1x Forza (Berserker)
1x Magissa (Enchantress)
2x Assassin
1x Mediator
2x Sorceror

After the battle, we see Ramza, Forza, and Magissa at the top of the falls. Magissa, refusing to die at the hands of "an environmentally conscious ragamuffin" jumps off the falls, to her death. (The player sees her corpse)

Forza, knowing only how to obey his wife, decides that if she jumps off a waterfall, so should he. You then see him jump and die. Ramza then finds a Goliath Bread on Forza's corpse, and a Yggdrasil Mistletoe on Magissa's body. Ramza leaves the Falls, lamenting how people who kill are destined to but one destiny- to be killed.

LD, Survivor is a good reward! I hope that it wasn't too much of a mind trip by throwing that in there, I'm not sure how you feel about cross overs like that with other games and I don't wanna confuse by implying it as anything other than a nice reference for fans of the Final Fantasy series. I just tried to think of something that we've never directly seen before, only had implied through conversation in FFVI, and then allowing the player a glimpse into those events through that sidequest.

How do you feel about references to other games though LD? I could probably think of some other ones, but I don't wanna over do it. I find it hard to come up with side quests that are completely original and find it fun to write about my fond memories from older games.

Well I made up one more regardless, this one though is totally just a reference, they are just a gang not the actual kingdom and I don't want it to seem like it is actually them, whereas Sabin obviously was much more true to his character in game.

EDIT: I tried to add some more 'character development/involvement' in an edit, but I don't know if it fits the characters/is really that great, it was kind of rushed, but if you like it let me know, if not, leave it out!

Quest: Save the Mysidians!
Chapter 2 or 3?
Activition: Is there a way to set it so the party can take on a quest to protect somebody? Like a notice posted at a bar asking for the help of strong travelers to defend them? If so then the party will see this call for help from a community of wandering mages who call themselves the 'Mysidians'. They are an ancient group of men and women tasked to protect their ancestors treasure (the Water Crystal, but doesn't have to be explicitly stated). Lately a gang of Mercenaries named the 'Red Wings' have been terrorizing them in order to steal their valued artifact. Thus they need they aid of a strong group to protect them.

The group could discuss the job. Rad mentions that he's heard of them and how they are a group dedicated to protecting a 'crystal' that was said to be of vast importance in ancient religions. Gafgarion is neutral on the idea aside from hearing about the promised reward. Ramza encourages the party to help them out, as he is tired of the weak being pushed around by those with strength. They decide to take the quest for different reasons; Rad wants more information the Mysidians, Gafgarion seeks the reward, and Ramza feels its important to protect those in need if one has the means to do so.

The party then heads to meet the Mysidians at Mandalia Plains [or wherever!] and they are discussing the recent attacks when the Wings arrive seeking the crystal once and for all!

The Red Wings and their gang leader 'King Baron' state they are not leaving without the crystal, and ask how many more lives the Mysidians will lose to protect it. Ramza and company prepare for battle, and a pair of brave Mysidians offer to help out.

Enemy Units [King should be a little stronger than Cecil/Kain, and Knights a little weaker than them]
1x Male Warder 'King Baron' [strong supporting unit]
1x Male EsperBlade 'Cecil' [equipped with Umbra if possible]
1x Male Dragoon 'Kain'
2x Male Knight

Guest Units
1x Mysidan Male Invoker [weaker than the party/enemies]
1x Mysidan Female Cantor [weaker than the party/enemies]

After defeating the Red Wings gang the Mysidians thank Ramza and co. and offer them their reward [not sure on what it should be, perhaps something related to magic though, a grimoire, staff, etc]. If you can keep the two guests alive then the reward should be greater [if this is possible!]. Rad then asks if they can tell him more about their groups history. As they began talking Gafgarion and Ramza stand aside and poke fun at Rad, and in a somewhat rare moment of truth Gafgarion admits that he too was happy to help them out. Ramza is quiet but pleased to hear it and Gafgarion (perhaps a bit embarassed) makes him swear not to tell Rad of this more tender moment.

If you want to have the Barons be killed in the battle that's fine, or if you want them to show up again in the future I can work something out too I'm sure! I can adjust the ending appropriately so that they can get back at the team, or Ramza and company can bump into them again, or whatever!

Also if you have ANY advice on improving further sidequests from me, let me know I would be glad to have it! I will probably create a few more for you if you like.

Zodiac dammit. Just when I was thinking of a FFIV reference, you have to post one right before me. Time to get started.

Defeat the Master IV(lame name)

Chapter 4

Read a rumor in Riovanes Castle about a group of 4 travelers challenging anybody to a match. They mention that it will be held in the month of Cancer(June-July) at... somewhere appropriate for a duel? When you enter the place, you see a lone knight with silver hair. He turns and greets you, introducing himself as Cecil. As Gaffgarion starts to comment about him being along, a dragoon suddenly lands behind the group in black/blue armor. A monk with a ponytail walks up from behind the dragoon and introduces the dragoon as Kain, and himself as Yang. Lastly, a summoner with green hair teleports in next to Cecil and stares around. She cheerfully introduces herself as Rydia. The introductions are held for the Mercenaries, then the match is off!

Battle:
Enemies:x4
Cecil: Party Level +10 Knight, only knows light skills. And white magic.
Kain: Party Level +10 Dragoon, jumps. For a lot.
Yang: Party Level +10 Monk, very powerful and supportive.
Rydia: Party Level +8 Summoner, very powerful summons.

When Cecil gets his second turn, however, he suddenly gets a headache and falls on one knee. The enemy party looks at him, asking if he's okay, when suddenly and evil aura comes out of Cecil. Suddenly, behind Cecil appears a Dark Knight, named Cecil?, with Party Level +20, and he's in a different team from everyone. The match continues, but with a 3rd enemy party. Battle ends when you defeat both enemy parties, or when Cecil? is defeated before your party is. Game over is Cecil? is the winner of the battle.

You win match: The enemy party thanks you for helping them defeat Cecil's dark past, and reward them with an appropriate weapon. Then they walk away from the party and never seen again.

You lose match: The enemy party thanks them for helping them defeat Cecil's dark past, and thanks them for a great match. They get a different reward, and then they walk away and are never seen again.

now then theres three possible endings to this event...

1.GPS (choice 1 end 1)

but ramza wounder if he made the right choice...both allies displeased and the real mission wasnt complete and now the ghosts may attack again...

2:FTC (choice 2)
amoung the bodys ramza looks in despair seeing such a tragety...asking himself could it have been avoided...gafgarian tells him to suck it up...after all there not heroes...just mercs...trying to make a living.

3:GPS (Choice 1 end 2)
the people are happy having gotten to safety the give you gold
Ramza satisfied it all worked out in the end...gafgarian displeased with his actions though. (if all saved in this you getting not one but two special Examples:hero Sword...but if ramza kills innocent he will refuse any reward).

(Obviously I know those arnt real swords in the game but I think all three versions have a different purpose...which is why they have different rewards choice two's reward will be the weakest since its easiest to obtain.[/quote]

hope you like it and feel free to revise :P[/spoiler]

What is this game if not an amalgamation of the series as a whole? Hehe, I feel no problem with sticking in references to other games. Though while I would love custom sprites for some of these, I understand that's an impossibility. If there's one thing Mercenaries lacks, it's dedicated spriters.

[spoilers]I like it, it's pretty unique, though I was thinking that if one of the two (either Cantor or Invoker) fell that the other one would also fall, (as well... what happens in FFIV). I can make War Trophies dependent on whether they survive or not. Hehe, I also like the bit of the tender moment. Also the touch of the King is nice, also would you like the Knights named Biggs and Wedge, or do you think they should have a more important part to play in another sidequest? Though I am afraid that Rumors have been turned into "Documents", important pieces of history to read, granted that a fair number of sidequests (or main quest) can be unlocked through this, don't forget that "Research" can also unlock propositions. Though that's really the only thing different, just choose a different matter to unlock the sidequest. Also I'm not too keen on Mandalia... too much occurs there already, how about... Fovoham Plains, or the Windmill Shed?

While this is a good idea in essence, (though I'm not sure if I like the random "Dark Cecil" appearance), it's a bit discrediting to Cecil's actual character to have him reconquered, though it is just an event, there's no way we could adequately portray the whole story of that (not easily anyhow).

Though here we come to another hurdle... I can only say that if you want custom sprites for your sidequests, you will have to make them, or ask someone with talent to do so. As it stands I am an extraordinarily poor spriter and rely on the goodwill of others for them. Once again though, Chapter 4 is a bit too heavy of a point to start a sidequest... mainly Chapter 4 is for finishing up the other chain sidequests, starting new sidequests at that point would betray the sense of urgency I want the fourth chapter (yes... unlike Every Other RPG in Existence, the end game will not be the best time to start sidequests). Chapter 3, is fine for this though

Ramza in Mercenaries is not so helplessly naive. He would need another motivation to want to help monsters, of all things, we've discussed on IRC that they could be torturing the monster, but to bring it more inline with the FF5 comparison... should it be a Hiryuu he's protecting? It would make more sense to protect an incredibly rare breed of dragon, ones known to cavort with man-kind rather then a dangerous dragon of which there are tons of.

For the third fight... Ramza isn't exactly the most over bearing fellow anymore, I couldn't see Gafgarion agreeing with him on this one, so easily. Though as for a trap... this is more of a Chapter 4 dealing, of course I won't reveal more then that. I really like it though! Especially since I feel they didn't get enough screen time in FFV
Title:

Sure, if we could make a new type of Dragon monster (Hiryuu) that would be great!

As far as fight 3, Gafgarion would figure that if there are monster hunters there, there's bound to be someone in need of work. Thus, his motivation to go there could be to find more work.

Bodyguards request!
Chapter 3

Ramza with Rad and Gaffy are sitting and drinking at the bar when despaired merchant comes, and asks them for help. When they are passing Araguay Woods suddenly a 5 peoples apears, merchant is saying that they took his last cargo.

Cause they tooked the last cargo they should have good equipment
1.Baku (slowest, with high HP and ATK, but low defense, have best equipment)
2.Zidane(quite good speed, medium stats and equipment)
3.Blank(good speed, ATK, rest stats are worse than medium, great sword everything else is average)
4.Marcus(medium ATK, speed, HP but good defense, medium equipment)
5.Cinna(lowest ATK,defense, highest speed, medium HP, medium equpment)

In this battle you can't let Tantalus members destroy cargo(5 boxes, or chests)and defeat them before they do.

Rewards:
Tantalus destroyed 1-3 boxes- you get medium amount of gil and good helm, shoes, shield
Tantalus destroyed all boxes- you get small amount of gil and weak sword
Tantalus didn't destroyed cargo- you get big amount of gil and great sword and armor

Choice 2 - Despair Sword = Coffin Nail

I can make it so you can pick up those sort of items from an event, but I'm not sure how to make it so the enemy would. Hmmm, I have a new sidequest idea, LD. But I wanna know whether it'd be personal to pull off a tournament-type battle. You start with your team, defeat the enemy, a new enemy appears, and so on and so forth. When you lose, you don't die, but the sidequest ends. For every battle you win, you get a prize. Now, there could be two ways to do this. One would be where you fight, you win, you go to the formation screen, then back to that same stage for the next fight, and the process repeats itself until you lose or all battles are completed. The other way would be that the battle ends and the next battle begins immediately (without the formation screen); thus you're relying on your current item inventory, your current equipment, your current team placement, and most importantly, your own endurance.

What say you, LD? If you want me to flesh out the idea, I'd be more than happy to. And I think we could wrap up some lingering characters this way too.

Quote from: "mav"Hmmm, I have a new sidequest idea, LD.

What say I? I say that sounds like a fantastic idea! It's very simple, and once again shows the use of Equip Change, as a tool to prepare for battle. Which map though? Also please develop this, it sounds like a grand idea!

Alrighty! Here we go:

Tournament of Champions

I was thinking Ch. 4--but if it's not right for the tone, then Ch. 3

Activation Method - Go from Bervenia Free City to Bethla Garrison

Area - Bervenia (battles will take place at the South Wall of Bethla Garrison)

Upon entering Bervenia Free City the team sees an ad that totes the annual "Tournament of Champions".  Intrigued by the immense rewards, the party intends to join the tournament.  Challengers from across Ivalice will unite at Bethla Garrison to engage in a series of battles.  The only thing lost after a battle is a bit of self-pride, but for every advancement the rewards (ranging from gil, to weaponry, to armor, etc) grow in value.

Once the team enters Bethla Garrison they must pay 1000 gil for the tournament to begin.  The team will be briefed: losers will be teleported out of the tournament immediately and there will be virtually no recuperating time between battles.  There will be a total of ten battles (if possible).  And the enemies will range from single units against Ramza and co to five enemy units (again, if possible).  The fights increase in difficulty as the tournament progresses.

I'm hoping that you guys will allow some of your sidequest characters to make reappearances (if they're still alive) in this tournament.  And if you'd rather have your characters offer up an item after being defeated, then say so.2nd Battle: Undecided.
3rd Battle: Undecided.
4th Battle: Gospel and party (from COP). Reward: Undecided. Submitted by Kokojo.
5th Battle: Gilgamesh (he'll be fighting on his own, and will obviously be difficult).  He'll give a short speech of some kind, and the battle will begin.  He'll be quite a few levels above Ramza and co (since he's fighting on without a team). Reward: Bartz's Crystal (if possible).
6th Battle: Tantalus (five party team. Reward: Secret Traveler's Skill (if possible). Submitted by Kagebunji.
7th battle: Forza and Magissa. Reward: Bow or Whip. Submitted by Eternal248.
8th battle: Duncan and party. Reward: Claw or Monk's Garb. Submitted by Eternal248. Approved by beawulfx.
9th Battle: Warder (15 lvls higher than the party). He'll need great secondary, support, and movement skills to make up for the fact that he's fighting on his own. Reward: 10000 gil.
10th Battle: The host of the tournament, Siegfried.  He'll definitely give some speech congratulating Ramza and co, but he'll be immensely tough.  It'll probably be another solo-battle. Reward: Undecided.
[/list]
Again, the sidequest ends if you lose any battle.  But you don't get a Game Over--in fact, if you at least win the first fight, you're guaranteed some gil.  You cannot re-enter the tournament.  Defeating Siegfried will allow the team to receive all the gil they've accumulated from the first fight (should be ten thousand, at least) as well as whatever specialty treasure would have been awarded after the fights.

If you lose any battle, the team will appear back at Bervenia and will comment on their defeat. If you win every battle, the team will not appear at Bervenia and will return to the World Map with all those great treasures in their inventory.

Quote from: "LastingDawn"I like it, it's pretty unique, though I was thinking that if one of the two (either Cantor or Invoker) fell that the other one would also fall, (as well... what happens in FFIV).

Haha, that is funny that you mentioned Biggs/Wedge! I actually had that typed out, and then deleted it cause I didn't want to 'overload' with references :)

I think the windmill shed sounds good for a battle location, Fovoham's rockiness throws me off.

I'm afraid to say I don't know the best way to 'unlock' the quest because I am not as knowledgeable as I would like on Mercenaries. Perhaps the group could bump into a Mysidian envoy while walking through... Lenalia, and he is asking for help. Then he can explain the situation and the party can head off to the shed to stop the Red Wings on his request?

Well, for the Forza and Magissa battle, I'd like the reward to be some sort of Bow or Flail.

Note that I didn't create the idea for Duncan, so you may wish to change that.

Alrighty. Hey beawulfx, do you mind if Duncan and co. make an appearance in the tournament? And if so, which battle should they take place in and what reward (if any) should they give?
Title:

I would be honoured to have Duncan and crew show up in the 8th battle. Seems like a good place for them to train! I'm not well versed on the items to know of what would be a suitable reward though. I have no idea what would be too much, not enough, etc, for when the tournament takes place.

I would say some sort of Claw, or a strong piece of clothing that a Monk would benefit from would be ideal though.

You can choose/anyone can, or LD can decide since he has a better idea of item strength relative to the game's chapters and such!

I came up with a few more at work, I'll post them sporadically. I hope I don't overwhelm you with any poor ideas. They are all just things that popped up when I was bored!

Quest: Bumbling Banditry
Chapter 2
Activation: Walking through Zirekile falls

The party is walking through the falls and all three members are standing on the suspended bridge chatting. Just then three large bandits [Preferably Warders? They look the beefiest AFAIK] walk from one side and block the bridge from that side. The party is surprised by their sudden advance. Then a Gambler and two Arbalists appear from the other side and block that exit trapping the party on the bridge.

The Warder on one side of the bridge is the leader and speaks to the party. He demands all their gil and equipment if they wish to pass. He threatens that if the party does not relinquish their stuff he'll have his lackeys drop the bridge into the water below and they'll collect it from their corpses. The party is not afraid as they've been in many sticky situations. Rad cracks a joke saying that he thought bridge Trolls only existed in children's stories. This angers the head bandit and he orders his accomplices to drop the bridge. The two beefy Warders to his left and right try to drop the bridge (have them kneel by his sides?) but after some effort sheepishly confess 'uhh boss, da bridge aint droppin'...'. They cannot sever the supports holding the bridge effectively.

The bandits (and the party!) are understandably embarrassed by the bandits incompetence and the leader decides that they will have to claim their bounty the old fashioned way to reclaim their pride. The battle ensues and of course, our noble party emerges victorious.

Enemy Units:
3x Warder   [Two equal strength, one more powerful as the leader]
2x Arbalist
1x Gambler

Upon defeating the bandits the Leader is kneeling before the party and promises to change his line of work. He offers up some gear (or gil!) that his troupe has stolen and then runs off in shame. The party laughs at their misfortune and Gafgarion excitedly begins rummaging through the spoils.

You know, this is odd... the bridge at Zirekile actually Can fall, the game never uses this, would you like to use it? It could in fact, be soemthing of a more to make the event unique, though if you'd like to save that for another event, that's fine as well
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on July 21, 2009, 12:36:52 am
Haha, wow that is odd! Well I wouldn't know how to implement that. My whole idea was to have the sort of tough but stupid bandits. Maybe after the battle as the bandit runs off the bridge could fall? That would be kinda funny. Like they loosened the supports enough, but just happened way too late for it to do any good. The party could look back surprised as it falls and make some sarcastic comment on the ineptitude of the bandits

One more tonight;

Quest: Gafgarion's Gaffe
Chapter 1-3?
Activition: Entering Gariland

The party walks to Gariland and the scene shows Ramza and Rad at the bar. Ramza is of course drinking his trademark milk, and Rad, clearly intoxicated, is arguing with another bar patron over whose Mercenary group is superior [or whatever, I couldn't think of anything good to have them talking about... any ideas from anyone appreciated]. After the discussion he walks over to Ramza and asks him where Gafgarion has gotten to. Ramza replies that he saw him chatting with three females before they all headed out of the bar smiling.

Rad laughs and exclaims that Gafgarion is in for a fun night. Ramza replies 'if that's your idea of fun...'. Rad asks if Ramza will ever loosen up [in a joking friendly way]. The pair then decide to call it a night and head outside [cutting to the location of the first battle in Vanilla at Gariland]. As they walk through the city a Frog bounds in from the corner and shouts for help. Rad and Ramza stop in their tracks and Rad laughs, claiming he must have had too much to drink because he swore that Frog just spoke. Ramza assures him that it's not the alcohol and then the Frog yells 'Rad! Ramza! Help me you buffoons! It's ME!'.

At this moment three seductive women appear from behind the Frog. #1 yells 'Where did he go?!' #2 shouts 'There he is!' and the third, realizing he has found his friends assures her mates that they will have more boys to play with than they thought.

The battle then ensues. The Seductive women should be able to cause a lot of statuses and be primarily magic based IMO. Rad and Ramza will have to fight alongside the Frogged Gafgarion in order to save him from the Sirens.

Enemy Units
3x Siren [Maybe the 'Lust' sprite and the two assassins for the females? Something that should be 'seductive']

After the battle the Sirens are injured and ask Rad/Ramza to spare them in exchange for a reward and of course, changing their ally back to his human form. Rad wants to finish them off but Gafgarion jumps in to stop him yelling about he would prefer not to spend his life crawling through the mud. Rad apologizes and Ramza accepts their proposal. They change Gafgarion back and they hand the party their reward [not sure what fits really, I need to get better acquainted with the equipment options!] before they rush off to terrorize the next gullible man they can seduce.

Rad chides Gafgarion on his affinity and weakness to beautiful women and how he always told Gafgarion it would get him in trouble. Ramza laughs along with Rad and Gafgarion is humbled/embarrassed and can't muster up much of a reply. The group decide to put the event behind them and let Gafgarion live this one down.

They seduce. Hence, succubus. Also, so much thievery going on in this game. Does the team get robbed in almost every stop they go to?
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on July 21, 2009, 12:49:06 am
Well I was going for the idea of the Sirens from Greek mythology. Typically a trio of three women that I believe are affiliated with turning people into animals, hence turning Gaff into the Frog. Succubus is pretty identical though, I wouldn't be too concerned either way really.

Also I imagine that most days they are just fine, however those vast majority of days don't make it into the game as side quests cause they are no fun! I imagine a small band of travelling mercenaries who probably have some lucrative spoils are a prime target for robbery though.

Post by: SilvasRuin on July 21, 2009, 12:56:10 am
Pretty simple idea.Don't have an idea of when or where it would occur.  You would be a better judge of that.

Quest: Turkey Season

The party comes across a Monk named Rude and a Traveler (or whatever would fit him better) named Reno under siege by three ruffians and optionally a black/gray dragon while they attempt to protect a weak Reliquian named Rufus.  Aware of how out powered they are, they request assistance and promise a reward.  There is no reward for refusing.

Reno and Rude should be a little weaker than the party.  Rufus should be very weak.  The goal is to protect Rufus.

You might have already guessed the names of the three attackers.  A Monk named Loz, an Arbalest named Yazoo, and a Knight (unless I've overlooked a more speed oriented swordsman in your job list) named Kadaj.  The Dragon should be named TREMOR and have a renamed and powered-up non-element fire breath called Peta Flare.  They should all be as justifiably powerful as possible to give the player a serious challenge.

For the first several turns in battle, Reno, Rude, Yazoo, and Loz should be spouting taunts at each other (currently don't have any ideas for taunts).  Allowing them to revive with 1 hp during said taunts might actually help the difficulty even out a little as Reno and Rude are likely to be the ones to go down anyways.

After the battle, assuming the player succeeds in killing off the attackers, Rufus explains they were after an "archaeologically" important artifact he found.  Whoever the most sarcastic of the party members is can take a jab at Reno's and Rude's sub-par bodyguard capabilities and Reno can fail miserably at a retort.

The reward?  I don't know.  While the Black Materia makes at least some sense in a way, it might be too much.
Yeah, I'm missing a lot of details, but it was a spur of the moment idea.  I wanted to put it out there before I forgot about it entirely.

Chapter 1

Unbeatable

Activation- Up to you LD

Any flat map.

Event- Ramza and co. enter the "map" and encounter a knight in critical position (Kneeling). Ramza asks to help but he doesn't respond, and they all approach him. Knight glows (stone glow, not the activation). The entire team is pushed back in 3 directions also in critical position. The knight then says, "It... is... time..."

Ramza and co. are thrown into battle with this overpowered knight with ??? HP, Immortal, and skills that are also very strong (usually not usable by the player), most likely unbeatable by current situations.

When all of Ramza's team is incapacitated (if Ramza crystals it Game Overs), Ramza's supposedly lasts words would be "It... can't end... like... this..." But Blind 2 is casts, and someone else shows up.

Cloud sprite appears (but he's not Cloud). His name is random, but he says he has no real name. He teleports everyone other then him and the Knight away. He says it is not the end, there is still much much more needed to be told. So "Cloud" and the Knight have a AI duel.

He cannot be controlled, so all the player can do is watch the duel go on. The nameless soldier is the same as the Knight, except he is stronger and at level 99. He is ??? and Immortal AND has exceptional abilities. He will always win against the knight.

The Knight is destroyed by explosion, and the nameless soldier teleports away. Ramza and co. reappear on the ground. They try to ask what happened but of course they never figure it out.

An X-Potion is given for watching this event.

O and if Ramza and co. wins, an event happens where the Knight kills them anyways, and the nameless soldier appears and the AI battle continues as planned.

Um... Boomkick, what's the point of that?  Is it supposed to be continued later at some point?  It sounds like you don't mean for it to.  I would argue that unbeatable fights and uncontrollable fights should be avoided in all cases that aren't a significant part of the main story or a side story.  I can't help but feel that putting a rigged fight in just to see flashy skills, high numbers, and explosions would be detrimental to the experience of the game to some extent.  It also rips the plot a rather large red herring hole that just doesn't need to be there.  And why Cloud of all sprites?

Though Boomkick... that one you asked for... well it doesn't quite make any sense to me, it's as odd as finding God in God Canyon, it's relatively pointless, it would appear.

Looking back at the tournament sidequest, I'm thinking the ninth battle (i.e. the one before Siegfried) should also be a solo battle. That way the player will be given a little more leeway before the final fight, so he can cure his team, regroup, etc. Do you guys have any suggestions for who should fill that bracket? And on top of that, there are still three spots open and a whole bunch of undecided rewards. They don't have to be special fights either, one round could be something simple: a Cantor, a Blue Mage, a Knight, and a Traveler, or something--no special names, no throwbacks, just a regular fight against regular characters who happen to be in the tournament. Or we could have another throwback, I don't really mind; let's just nip this thing in the butt, folks.

Excellent! Though, I'm gonna make them the sixth battle and move the COP guys to the fourth battle. If it's possible to give skills as a reward, then that'll do, but it might have to be an item or Treasure of some kind...or money, which is fine too.

Many thanks, Kage.

This time we gonna get ya!

Chapter 3

Trigering event- Ramza with Rad an Gaff are staying in the inn while a paper plane arives through window. Rad read it and says that Tantalus want to chalenge them again in Araguay woods. Next morning in meeting place, Ramza and the rest can't see members of Tantalus, suddenly a black ball is thrown at them and their eyes are blinded (status blind). 6 members of Tantalus apears and sorrounds them, some dialoques and battle begin.

Ramza an co. start with blind. Enemy party should be around level 40
1.Baku (high ATK, HP, very low defense, again he is slowest)
2.Zidane(medicore stats, except speed)
3.Blank(High attack and medicore speed, HP, rest is low)
4.Marcus(medicore stats, except defense)
5.Cinna(low stats, only maagic stats are great)
6.Ruby( low stats, except MP, magical power, and very high faith, if possible she should be a healer)

After defeat Baku say this isn't their last meet(last one will be at tournament) and their lose because they were tired, then leader of Tant. gives them big amount of gil and good clothes.

If Tantalus in tournament was placed on 6th place, then here is my suggestion:
9th battle: Beatrix-very strong, 2x Alexandrian soldier(Miang SPR can bee good choice)-medicore. Reward: 20000gil and sword "excalipoor"if not possible then "wave creese".
Title:
Post by: mav on July 22, 2009, 07:52:52 pm
I dunno, I think it would be unfair for whoever is playing to have to fight another enemy group right before the end of the tournament. If it's just Beatrix, then it'll work. If I were playing through this tournament, I'd want a little break right before Siegfried, just to get my act together and cure up whoever needs to be cured.

Oh, and we'd have to give Wave Creese as the reward, since the Excalipoor is obtained through a different sidequest.

I'm not wasting time, so here is another one. This is ver. 1.2, thanks to Silvas it look better now.

Dead everywhere

Chapter 3 end (but beginning of 4 would be better)

Event- Ramza and co. while arriving to Zagrhidas( I don't remember the name correctly) see few corpses, suddenly a half living woman come from the street, and tell them to be carefull, cause... women dies. Gaff says that he will look into this matter alone, and they should stay here, then he goes away. Rad and Ramza ignore his order, and start looking for living people. Before them appear Demon ( some unique class, like "death bringer" or something with dead in it, if possible he should be black-red). He says to Rad and Ramza he will take their lives too, and that they can't defeat him. Then first part of battle begins

Enemy units:
1.Shin- uber strong magic based stats, power based strong too. Immortal(in this part of batle), ??? HP

After defeating Ramza and Rad he should say some words like " ready to join the rest?" or something, sudenly Gafgarion appears and hurts Shin with some unique sword skill, and nullifing his immortality, Gaff also restores Ramza with Rad. The second part of battles begins.

Enemy units
1.Shin-stats are the same, only immortality is no longer ( should have something around 1500HP)

After beating Shin, they are aiding people that survived, head of village thanks Ramza and co. and gives them "demon slice" and "wave armor".
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 23, 2009, 10:10:00 am
If it is supposed to be hard enough at the first part for it to survive two units and get them into critical, how in the world could it be harder upon the entry of a third unit and not crush the player's team?  It HAS to actually be easier when you have Gaf's help, otherwise it runs into being unbeatable or it winds up being entirely beatable without Gaf's help.  Either way kind of breaks your plans.

And out of curiosity, why the name Shin?
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on July 23, 2009, 11:00:32 am
It, MUST be harder! Well if you must, Gaff could get some better stats for this battle too, after the battle Ramza asks why Gaff was  so powered up, Gaff says he drinked "potion of might" (or something else). Now happy? It should be easy enough now.

Shin cause it's the name of Demon leader in Star Ocean 2, and first battles with him was impossible to win, that's why I wanted to be so hard ;).
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 23, 2009, 12:09:31 pm
It's not that I was arguing that it shouldn't be harder.  I'm saying it is impossible.  If you want it to play out as scripted, the first part of the battle can't be possible to win unless you load it up with precautionary deus ex machinas, which is bad story telling.  Rad and Ramza can't be strong enough to take him down, so it must be impossible.  Thing is, you can't make anything harder than impossible.  Now, the demon can be more powerful after Gaf arrives, but logically it would still have to be easier than the first part of the fight because the first part of the fight is impossible, and you can't make it harder than impossible.  If the first half is not winnable and the second half is, then the second half is easier.  That's just the way things work.  See what I mean?
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on July 23, 2009, 12:29:45 pm
Small change of plans: in first part his HP is ??? and you can't kill him, after Ramza and Rad are defeated, Gaff arrives using some unique sword skill on Shin and heals Ramza and Rad, from now on his HP is around 1500 and is beatable. I think it looks better isn't it??
Title:

Yes.  Now I think you see what I meant.

Post by: mav on July 23, 2009, 03:02:27 pm
If you're not interested in any updates to the tournament, you don't have to read this.
Alright, the 9th battle will be against a Warder, who is at least 15 levels higher than Ramza and co. His lack of speed and mobility, as well as his reliance on defense will give the player plenty of time to recuperate. The fact that he's so much more leveled up and has good support abilities, however, will still make him a formidable opponent. His reward will be a simple 10,000 gil. I'm thinking the player will leave the tournament with an additional 40,000 gil total.
This leaves the second and third battle open for suggestions. Teams and solos are welcome.

ok well I have  another I think you may like...but who knows :P

any chapter

Trigering event- Ramuza Masters thief + stolen (I cant think a fair yet high amount of gil but a certain amount would be required)

event name: .:The Thief's Guild:.

Event: ramuza just walking through town as a guy (the thief) walking by tryies to pickpocket him as he passes by...stopping him the thief intrigued that he was able to figure him out rasmuza replying simply with he has experiance with it. this thief issues a challenge to him.

mission:Steal more gold than him in 7 turns

reward for battle:the gold stolen of course + If you beat him he tells you of the thiefs guild which now when you go to this place you are able to get thiefs at the employment office...they cost alot of money

mav, better suggestion for 9th battle. Zodiac, Voldemort, and other people with their own custom sprites join in on the battle. It'll be mayhem.

And everyone ignored this, so...
Honour Never Dies

Chapter 1-4

You need to enter the designated areas at the designated times, one in each chapter. Each one is a marathon battle, battling against each of the Princess capturing group. The battles will be hard, and require set up before you start the next battle.

Chapter 1: Enter Thieves Fort after the Windmill Shack battle. Ramza will see a Materia on the floor. As he's about to pick it up, a barrier appears around it and repels his hand. Ramza shouts, and Rad and Gaffgarion show up. Suddenly Viggs appears as an archer, and battle ensues.

Match 1: Viggs: Archer, Party Level, Innate Protect.
Match 2: Wezaleff: Archer, Party Level, Innate Shell.
Match 3: Dish: Arbalist, Party Level, Always Berserk.
Match 4: Lezales and Fukes: Lezales is a knight with regenerator, defence up, move hp+, innate protect and shell. Fukes is a Scryer with Trancer secondary, and a gun. He has innate Protect, Shell, and magic defence up.

After the battle, the Materia floats into the air, then explodes, shattering it across Ivalice. However, Ramza finds one shard where it used to stand.

Chapter 2: Right after Lionel event, have the team head over to Lenalia Plateau. Must enter from north.  Upon walking into the area where Miluda was killed, Rad happens to notice something light coming from the ground. He walks over and manges to dig up a shard of the Materia. However, it starts to glow, and Viggs and Wezaleff appears out of nowhere.

Match 1: Viggs: Arbalist, Party Level +2, Innate Protect
Wezaleff: Arbalist, Party Level +2, Innate Shell
Match 2: Dish: Warder, starts off with 8 Fury, Party Level +3, Innate Protect, Innate Shell
Match 3: Fukes: Engineer, Party Level +3, Teleports on top of the guillotine after Dish is defeated, has 2 guns, and scrying.
Match 4: Lezales: Dark Knight, Party Level +5, ??? Stats, Innate Defence Up, Innate Magic Defence Up, Move HP+

After finishing off Lezales, the team grabs the Materia shard and gets out of the area.

Chapter 3: After the Yuguo Woods battle, head back to Orbonne Monastery. Upon Simon's death spot, a new shard of Materia is located by Gaffgarion. However, this shard suddenly flies up, glows, and then the party is relocated to Murond, map where you fight Zombag. Dish appears, and another battle starts.

Match 1: Dish: Hessain, Party Level +5, Always Berserk, Innate Defense Up and Shell.
Match 2: Miluda(!): White Knight, Party Level +10, ??? Stats, Move HP+, Innate Defense Up and Magic Defense UP.
Fukes: Scryer, Party Level +5, ??? Stats, Has two guns forced equipped.
Match 3: Golgoros: Dark Knight, Party Level +10, ??? Stats, Move HP+, Always Protect and Defense Up.
Match 4: Lezales: Lune Knight, Party Level +10, ??? Stats, Always Protect and Shell, Innate Defense Up and Magic Defense Up
Viggs: Warder, Party Level +7, Innate Defense Up
Wezaleff: Warder, Party Level +7, Innate Magic Defense Up

More to come

cold52:
First, there are no thieves in Mercenaries.  Ramza has some thieving abilities, but that is it.  Second, there is no employment office.  There are only two characters you can equip and consistently use in-battle:  Ramza and Rad.  Third, utilizing special characters to be recruitable with Thief as their base job will burn up character slots, severely restricting how many unique characters there can be each chapter, depending on how many you recruit.  Fourth, since the game is balanced and battles are set up to rely on guests based on the assumption that you only have two characters you set up yourself, changing that and adding other units would not only break balance, it would break the game itself.  I expect it would cause glitches galore.  What you suggest just isn't doable, from what I can tell.

chapter 3-4

Ramza witch co. stoped at the pub in Dorter, to get drunk (except Ramza). When Rad and Gaff where having drinkin contest, some people from organization "protectors of endangered animals" come to pub seeking help. They started to talk with Ramza. They said that they are looking for strong mercenaries, because poachers want to take skin of last surviving "Sacred behemoth". Next day when Ramza with co. arrive to Zeklaus desert, they see two "protectors of endangered animal"(sain SPR works fine, they have some green in it), "Sacred behemoth", and four poachers(give em the job you wish), now there are two choices:

1.Protect the behemoth!-your main objective is to protect behemoth. The 2 protectors and behemoth become your quests
2.Let's help poachers- you must kill behemoth and protectors. Four poachers become your quests, but Ramza won't aid you in this(he will go away for the time of battle)

Results:
First choice- protectors thank you, give you "artemis bow", 20000gil, and you see the sceen where behemoth rans away.
Second choice- Poachers are gratefull that you helped them, and you obtain 50000gil along with some great spear. Then Ramza will arque with Gaff why he did such a thing, some hardcore dialoques and the screen fades.

That'd be awesome, especially since they both have completed sprites already, but for ease of gameplay, I think the ninth battle should be a solo fight. But that's just for ease of gameplay, if you guys would really like to have the ninth battle be against another team, then I'll happily make the change.

Oh and your sidequest is pretty awesome--it'd be the first time to see Lezales's team split up.

Heh, good question. I mean, after a string of ten back-to-back battles, what do you do? Stock up on items, I suppose...I dunno; I know I keep mentioning gameplay as a factor in this tournament, but I honestly have no idea how it'd all play out...

I think a heal between each fight would be better.  You wouldn't have to tone down the difficulty of the fights that way.  It might be nice to allow the player to adjust Rad and Ramza between each fight, but I suppose it should be doable enough without that.

Alright, looks good, except not everyone can be blinded through an event, they can only be poisoned or turned to Crystals. If there's enough room the enemies could have a unique move or two. Though which city is this?

I'm afraid recovering Rad and Ramza wouldn't really be easy, or... sense making, I say keep them both at 1 HP and have them recover through the player's own efforts. Though you'll have to be a little bit more descriptive about this skill that Gafgarion uses on the Demon, keep in mind Gafgarion is a Dark Knight, I wouldn't see him as very effective against Demons. As well the reward is too much... I like the thought put into the Demon Slice, but Wave Armor is another rare treasure that shouldn't just be handed out. I'll see if I can do anything unique with this... fellows... sprite? Perhaps a different sprite until Gafgarion comes to save the day?

Hmm, so this will more than likely be the Black Materia but...in Chapter 1, the crew hadn't been fought yet. If it is afterwards it makes much more sense for these people to be spirits brought back through the Materia's neutral chaos, then again they did work for the church... it's not out of thought to believe this might have been an Auracite rather then Materia.

I'm afraid there's only really one gun, and that, without a bullet, is all but useless. Of course he can have a gun and a bullet equipped. Also I love the touch you gave to Dish, 8 Fury and Warder should make him very annoying to defeat.

QuoteChapter 3: After the Yuguo Woods battle, head back to Orbonne Monastery. Upon Simon's death spot, a new shard of Materia is located by Gaffgarion. I can't say much... but Simon's death spot isn't really in Orbonne anymore as it stands, hmm... well for the Black Materia, I guess that's a fitting difficulty, interesting touch with the dead Death Corps officers.

I know mine are massively long, here is another though, with some more choice involved! It's based on some little info from vanilla and maybe can bring some more depth to the world of Ivalice. I hope they aren't being used in your patch, or that if they do show up they are still the same shady company we've come to love, heh

Quest: Baert Trading Company
Chapter 2-3?
Activition: Warjilis Trade city, or a town nearby?

The party is walking through the town of Warjilis (could use the map for Slums of Goug, or any unused town area map) and they see a poster from the Baert Trading company seeking help of strong men to protect their latest shipment departing from Warjilis Trade City Docks that night. They are offering a large cash reward for anyone who can stand gaurd as brigands have been looting from them during recent trade runs.

The party decides to take up the offer and heads off to the Warjilis map with the docked ship. Here we see Rudvich by the boat and two Thieves (Gamblers? The thief sprite would work well though I think...) on the boat.

Here we see the shipment is nearly finished loading. The Mercenaries walk up towards the boat to meet with Rudvich who thanks them for their aid. Rad inquires as to why they were standing guard so far away from the boat and Rudvich assures them it was the best place to ensure security. He is about to offer the party their reward when suddenly a woman's cry is heard from within the ship. Ramza exclaims that he thinks he heard a woman cry for help from the boat and Rudvich assures them it was nothing. Just then two Knights show up and demand that Baert turn himself in for the crime of human trafficking.

Baert says the charges are ludicrous and asks the party to fulfill their obligation to protect him and his cargo, and the party has a choice.

A) Protect Baert Rudvich - More units show up with the Knights and the two Rudvich employees join as Guests. If you select this option and win the battle then you are rewarded with a large sum of gil and another item given for doing such an exemplary job. After the battle Ramza expresses concern about what he heard, and Gafgarion assures him it was nothing and that they did their job and received their reward in kind.

B) Side with the Knights and help them take the Trading Company in. More enemies appear along with the enemies on the boat and try to take down the Mercenaries and the two Knights (who join as guests). If you win the Knights thank you for your help and wonder if they could have done it without you. They tell Ramza and company that they found a cell of young women to be sold to high paying noblemen for all sorts of seedy deeds. They give the party a small gil reward and an item (preferably one better than the item from Baert to counter the lessened cash reward). Ramza expresses his joy at performing a good deed and Rad agrees. Gafgarion says he is just glad they were given a decent reward and that helping those others is just a small bonus, but if they keep this up they may run out of gil and the party heads out of the map.

Quote from: "SilvasRuin"I think a heal between each fight would be better.  You wouldn't have to tone down the difficulty of the fights that way.  It might be nice to allow the player to adjust Rad and Ramza between each fight, but I suppose it should be doable enough without that.
Do you mean that the team is healed after the fight and then proceed to the next fight (as in, without the formation screen)? Or do you mean the battle ends, it goes to formation, where you can change jobs, equip new weapons, etc, and the next fight begins (and because it's a new fight your stats are back up)?

When it comes to the formation screen, I'm kinda in this state of perpetual bartering: either the tournament isn't back-to-back and the fights can be more diverse and challenging, or the tournament is back-to-back but the fights are easier, due to the crippling nature of fighting round after round with little rebound. Anyhow, the tournament isn't set in stone yet, so things could easily be reworked and the more exciting battles can be put in.

And I should mention how important LD's opinion is: I don't want this to be a programming nightmare for him, or anything like that. And I'd like for it to be a nice little feature for this patch. So if he thinks it should go one way, then I'll definitely support him (even if I may not necessarily agree).

Because of the multi-patching done, events and inbattle events are not matters of concern, in fact there could be an event to restore both Ramza and Rad to max HP and MP (I think?), in fact... is this available in all four chapters? If so, there could be a number of matches for each and every chapter, each one with a varying final prize. I would say that Yardow or Zaland locations (not map neccessarily...) might be the best place to hold these tournaments. Are you sure you only want one try as well? I can arrange it that, you can take multiple tries, and even possibly arrange a system and seperate matches of... for instance...

1. Round Mode (Allows for full healing and optimizing after battle, enemies are more difficult)

2. Survival Mode (No healing after battle, survive through 9 grueling teams! Each one more destructive then the last!) or something like that.

Though I think for simplicities sake, I think I'll have the Tournaments held in the Thieves Fort, on second thought... this will allow ease of access. Failure in combat will only lead to being sent back to Gariland, to assure that it wouldn't repeat itself over and over and...

Though how does that look? 18 seperate battles per chapter? (that might be a bit much...) feel free to re-examine the amount, if we do decide to do it in this manner.

Quote from: "beawulfx"I know mine are massively long, here is another though, with some more choice involved!

Pretty creative, and it's very fitting to the theme of Mercenaries. A very good addition.

I meant both.  The last sentence was about the two possibilities and how I didn't have a strong leaning either way there.  Healing after every battle would probably be enough if you made sure to give Ramza and Rad setups that are versatile enough to not get in a jam.  Healing without the chance to change setups could be a good compromise to get the difficulty hovering at just about the right level, depending on how many different situations you can put them in during the tournament.  (The more strategies needed, the harder it would be without re-equipping or job changing.)

LastingDawn, I don't believe I saw your response to an idea of mine.  Is it too out of place?
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on July 24, 2009, 01:11:19 am
Ah, I thought I missed something... this would be my own personal bias, but I'm not a big fan of FFVII, or it's movie. I knew I forgot to reply to something...

Also as it goes for "re-equipping" Rad and Ramza have innate Equip Change on all of their classes, so changing equipment is only a turn taken in battle.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 24, 2009, 01:33:06 am
Then my comment only applies to job and ability changing.

That's a small bummer.  Mainly I wanted an excuse to get Reno and Rude in there.  Those three Sephiroth spawn and Rufus never were interesting to me anyways.  Oh well.  If I come up with something I think you'll like, I'll post it.

Back to mission "dead everywhere", leaving them with 1HP could be great too, I can't arque with that, cause it'll be harder :D. Hmm about the skill Gaff could use... how about he throw some holy shuriken? Wave armor can be deleted, instead, how about 10000gil and "demon slice"? I don't think there has to be some new sprite for Shin, only recoloring it should do it. And about 2nd fight with Tantalus, i think they should stay in Dorter for night(cause it's close to araquay)

Ok, next one ( had to modify it a lot, it could be better LD, but oh well ;) )

The Juarez

Chapter 3 (middle)

Ramza and co. were resting on Mandalia Plains, when a hoded person come ( maybe Purple mystery SPR with colors changed to brown?). He said them that a group called "The Juarez" are defeating almost all mercenaries groups, and that the next one is Gaff and his companions.Gaffgarion replied that they aren't interested with such things, but man laughed at him and said that he is a coward, Gaff said that he will teach those weaklings a lesson, and asked where the duel will be held. Man told the duel will start tomorrow at Fovoham. Then the man leave, and Ramza say that he doesn't have good feeling about this.

Next day when Ramza and co. arrived at Fovoham three people appear and present themself as "The Juarez". Then the battle begins:

Enemy units:
1. Thomy(their leader, he should be 5 lvl. higher than Ramza, Corban Black SPR will be perfect)
2. Mike( only a member, Snake (yuong) SPR is good)
3. Bruce( another member, Snake (young) SPR again)

When you defeat them you get 15000 gil and great gun with bullets.

Well Here is a idea.
Potential Job / A Bar Fight
Chapter: Any
Area: Pub,  Map 96
Could be in any city of your choice too, cant think of any good ones right now.

Rad, Ramza, and Gaffgarion go to the bar to meet with someone offering a job.  The person gets there late, which means Rad is drunk by the time they get there.  Ramza and Gaff go out to talk to him.  Ramza comes back a few minutes later to find a fight about to break out between Rad and the bar patrions.

No one has any weapons equipped, and the enemies only have clothes type armor. 4-5 on 2.  After the fight Passes out from being drunk, and while Ramza checks up on him one of the people who was knocked out gets up and gets a cheap shot on Ramza, knocking him out.  Gaffgarion then enters, picks up a item off the ground, then takes them back to a hotel room.  Reward is a bit of gil and a Tobacco Pipe.  That is if its not too good of a item to find there.  If not maybe a good knife.  They talk a bit about it and Rad frogot why the fight started in the first place.Oh yeah and Gaff refuses the job.

Heh, yeah I know I put my own in there as well, I just imagine they spend a lot of money on their bar tabs that's all. Especially Rad. Not sure how much milk costs in a bar though...
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 27, 2009, 04:09:48 pm
Hah!  Perhaps someone should make a quest involving them having to pay off a hefty tab somehow...  Hrm.  Don't have time now, but I'll be pondering that later.

Post by: mav on July 27, 2009, 04:18:00 pm
Quote from: "LastingDawn"Because of the multi-patching done, events and inbattle events are not matters of concern, in fact there could be an event to restore both Ramza and Rad to max HP and MP (I think?), in fact... is this available in all four chapters? If so, there could be a number of matches for each and every chapter, each one with a varying final prize. I would say that Yardow or Zaland locations (not map neccessarily...) might be the best place to hold these tournaments. Are you sure you only want one try as well? I can arrange it that, you can take multiple tries, and even possibly arrange a system and seperate matches of... for instance...
If the HP and MP could be restored after every third fight (after the third, then sixth, then ninth) or even halfway through (as in after the fifth battle) that should make Survival Mode a bit more balanced, as Silvas mentioned. To me one try makes the Tournament more worthwhile (though a bit tougher for the player), but if there is only one tournament, I suppose that's a bit unfair...

Quote from: "LastingDawn"Though I think for simplicities sake, I think I'll have the Tournaments held in the Thieves Fort, on second thought... this will allow ease of access. Failure in combat will only lead to being sent back to Gariland, to assure that it wouldn't repeat itself over and over and...
Thieves' Fort is fine, I suppose. The only reason I chose the South Wall at Bethla Garrison is because it literally looked like the place a tournament would be held; the map is basic enough for an uncomplicated fight, but versatile enough for a decent match. Though a different location(s) would be perfectly acceptable.

Quote from: "LastingDawn"Though how does that look? 18 seperate battles per chapter? (that might be a bit much...) feel free to re-examine the amount, if we do decide to do it in this manner.
Oh my, that's quite a few battles, but if we could flesh it out, then perhaps 10 (or so) battles per chapter would be neat.

I feel like I'm hijacking this thread, since the Tournament really does need a lot of work. I hope that those of you following these posts about the Tournament will give input, since I really haven't thought this through...I'll keep this on my mind and give you an adequate response as soon as I can.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 27, 2009, 04:23:32 pm
I like the tournament idea and I say you should keep on hijacking the thread.  It's a fun idea that would be great to flesh out.
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on July 27, 2009, 04:25:53 pm
Well, I can maybe think of some more input later, but a little note is that I would really like the 'round mode' suggested by LastingDawn. Since we are only able to customize Rad/Ramza for the whole game and there are so many new jobs and items to play around with I think it would be a lot more fun if we could tailor our jobs/team set up before each battle. Then we get more and more chances to try out new set ups and play around with all that Mercenaries has to offer. I know we can equip change in battle but I would like the opportunity to switch up classes and such. I know this makes it a bit easier, but I think if we beef up the challenge of each group that would balance out just fine. I think this sounds much more appealing though.
Title:
Post by: mav on July 27, 2009, 08:29:12 pm
Hah, thanks for the encouragement, Silvas. And that makes a lot of sense, beawulf--it would definitely be a lot of fun switching around classes in preparation for the new fights, plus you would also get a chance to equip the newly received items and spend all that well-deserved JP on new techs, and on top of all that, we could drop out some of the solo fights make this more challenging (which is what I'd really like to see).

So what do you guys think, should this tournament be available for each chapter, should there be a separate tournaments with different characters for each chapter, or should there be one mega tournament available once in only one chapter? And should you be unable to re-enter the tournament once you've lost? Although in the case of new tournaments in each chapter, you could still enter those after losing the previous tournament...
Title:
Post by: beawulfx on July 27, 2009, 08:40:09 pm
In my own selfish way I would love a new tournament each chapter with the aforementioned ability to adjust between battles. That would be epic and outstanding. But I don't know how LD feels, he will be doing a lot of programming so however he sees it.

I say no on the re-entry because you should be saving very often anyway with all these missions popping up all over the map. Then you can just reset and try again like I would for a multitude of reasons anyway. I don't think it would be that big of a problem. If you haven't saved in a long while and you miss out, that sucks for sure, but I doubt that would happen much. Maybe that's just my save-heavy self talking though, I wouldn't be inconvenienced.
Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on July 28, 2009, 01:12:11 am
Repeatable tournament would be fun, especially if the enemies grew in level with you (particularly if their setups can get deadlier in doing so).  I favor the option to repeat whether you win or lose, so long as you can't get absolutely fantastic or one of a kind equipment with every completion.  There would need to be diminishing returns.  As for whether it should be available each chapter?  The more the merrier.

Post by: Kagebunji on July 30, 2009, 02:05:47 pm
This is probably my last idea, don't know if it's good though

Rad feelings

Chapter(you know storyline, so you will choose)

Gafgarion was lately praising Ramza a lot, Rad felt that he is weak and no longer needed cause Gaff don't pay him any attention. He decides to fight Ramza to see if he is good enough to stay with them. In this battle you control Ramza

Enemy units:
1. Rad- stats aren't changed, but for this battle Rad has something "extra".

There are two options to win:
1.Bringing Rad HP to critical: he is saying that this is not the end, then he casts Flare2 on Ramza. Ramza faints and Rad wins, he then laughs that he is stronger afterall, even without Gafgarion. Rad also says that he will buy Ramza a round in the bar.
2. Ramza HP is bringed to critical: Battle ends and Rad want to still go on ( and almost kill Ramza), then Gafgarion come and stops Rad, he also scolds him of being so self-centered.

Rewards:
1.Elixir.
2. 5000 gil ( and Rad apologies Ramza)
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on July 30, 2009, 02:13:12 pm
Reading last posts given me idea for next one:

Pay back!

chapter 4 (it would be best)

When Ramza and co. were resting in Zirekile, 5 knights appeard, saying them that they come for gil from all those drinks and milk. Now there are two options

1.Pay them: you lose 75% of your current gil
2.Are you kiddin??: hard battle starts, your reward will be 60000 amount of gil.

After choosing first option, Rad says he will never again get drunk in the bar
When choosed second option, Ramza says that they shouldn't do that, Gafgarion says that he is too soft.
Title:
Post by: goldblade0 on August 12, 2009, 08:22:01 pm
I have half a idea, the starting point.  It seems that all these ones are starting at the bar, or simular situations with random people doing random stuff.  Why not have it with a Noble giving the job, since they have been known to do things of the nature.

Wow, those look pretty good! Very nice recolors! Let's see if Mav of MikeMitchi can make a palette to match the portraits, don't worry I know how to input portraits alone.

But... soething seems to be wrong with the Behemoth picture, it seems to cut itself off as the third set starts.

I'll happily recolor the portraits, just give me the exported BMP and it'll take no time. Though maybe the purples on the demon's face should be changed out a bit--right now they're just a little too bright. Good job though, man.

demon baron does not

I agree with Arch. The oranges and that magenta/pink/purple color just doesn't look right on the demon. A quick palette edit could fix it though...

Title:
Post by: SilvasRuin on November 08, 2009, 10:32:56 am
The problem with the pink is that there's just too much contrast with his skin and everything else.  It's a little jarring.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 08, 2009, 11:05:18 am
Hmm...where did you get the pinks/purples from anyway? Or was it custom? I think working with some existing monster palettes will make this a helluva lot easier.

Mav, pink was from Behemoth, I already know to take palette fromn existing sprites ;)

I will try again with other pink later.

Edit: This time I tried Ramza's purple, I will say my opinion later.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 08, 2009, 04:21:05 pm
The gauntlets definitely need a color change. My suggestion: use the skin shade from the Sacred (or whatever that blue Bull Demon is called) and use the skin colors from one of the Tiamat's for the gauntlets. Or maybe the Sacred is too neon, all you need are some lighter shades for the skin...
Title:
Post by: Kagebunji on November 08, 2009, 04:35:21 pm
When I lighten it up, it will look almost identical to first version, btw this version was mainly to show new skin, not gaunlets :/.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 08, 2009, 04:46:13 pm
Ah, yes. The purple skin still needs to be lightened, but unlike the others, make sure it's desaturated and closer to gray on the color wheel. Something like the Squidlarkin would work.

The problem here may also be the whites and grays and the general differences in colors you've selected. Look at the Ultima Demon: dark blue skin, light grayish blue face, and blue gauntlets. Try keeping with that general system, instead of light skin, purple face, orange gauntlets, etc, etc.
Title:

Title:
Post by: mav on November 09, 2009, 04:41:46 pm
Almost perfect now. The only possible flaw on the sprite is that the gray skin appears to go from light to dark too suddenly. Work with blending those by easing up some of the dark shades. And the lightest purple on the portrait looks a teeny bit too light. Fix those and you'll be set. Good work, Kage.

I would say that the red needs to be slightly brighter, and the black needs to be a little darker and with slightly more blue (if that is at all possible).

Off-topic note: I love Diablos, the fight with him can be ridiculous.

something like that

is it possible to use Ultima Demon's black for the outer skin? (it's got better contrasts IMO) and lighten the reds a little?

and if you could, make the head horns black as well

Good work!

The new purple one's colors go together much better than the earlier attempts at it.  Both look solid, in my opinion.

Major shading problem with the grey.
Look how dark the darkest gray is compared to the others.

I just saw your signature, make vivi smaller, you can probably use the 10yo girl to help for the smaller characters.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 10, 2009, 04:31:59 pm
There are three colors on the demon that just look too similar. Their RGB values are 37 37 30 (on the chest), 33 33 33 (second darkest shade), and 28 28 28 (darkest shade, for shadows and whatnot). Change that first one to a dark purple, lighten up the second one to something like 60 60 60, and you can leave the last one as is. And don't the RGB values have to be multiples of 8 (or was it 4) to appear correctly in game?

I believe Lasting Dawn wants to make some references to previous FF games, so I have a suggestion for FFIX: It would be cool to have an enemy or maybe an ally called Ipsen, and maybe give him a friend called Colin. Ipsen was an adventurer in FFIX, he's mentioned a few times by Zidane, and the party names a castle they do not know the real name of Ipsen's Castle. Its not a very easily noticeable reference, but personally I think those are the best kind.

That'd be fantastic. Tantalus is composed of Baku, Zidane Blank, Marcus and Cinna though.
But any FFIX reference will be great IMO. IDK what LD thinks about it though..

Post by: Wasabi on November 17, 2009, 06:14:13 pm
I believe a Gilgamesh sidequest has been said many times in this thread, but I'd like to suggest a small extension to it, if possible. What about making a series of sidequests that parallel both Yojimbo from FFX and Gilgamesh of FFV, where Yojimbo is either a guest/rival enemy unit that either aids you in a mission or prevents you from accomplishing it? For the latter, he'll compete with you to see who'll win the mission, and if he is the victor he ends up taking the spoils? Just a thought.
Title:
Post by: LastingDawn on November 17, 2009, 07:25:46 pm
That doesn't seem a bad idea, the problems all come back to Sprites, what sprite would represent Yojimbo?

EDIT: Also the idea with Ipsen is very nice! Subtlety is my preference.
Title:
Post by: mav on November 17, 2009, 09:29:57 pm
Ooh, since Yojimbo can supposedly be read as "services for hire" in Kanji, I'm sure making him a mercenary/bounty hunter would help ready him for this patch's environment. I guess I should mention that my earlier idea for Gilgamesh was to parallel the titular character from the Epic of Gilgamesh, while hopefully incorporating elements of Gilgamesh from FFV (and possibly FFXII).

So what's your idea for Yojimbo, Wasabi? I hope he brings dog/pet thing, Daigoro.

That's amazing ^^, you guys are working really hard on this patch, it's truly inspiring. btw, the sprites in your sign look quite good.

Quote from: "LastingDawn"Also the idea with Ipsen is very nice! Subtlety is my preference.
Exactly ^^, and also, since Ipsen never did show up in the game, you guys can just take a generic knight or something and call him Ipsen. Or if you're willing, create an original sprite (not quite needed in my opinion, a simple knight with a different color would do the job)

Title:
Post by: Wasabi on November 18, 2009, 09:58:51 pm
Was Ipsen portrayed as a knight in FFIX?

My idea for Yojimbo in Mercernaries is to make him into a "rival mercenary" that occasionally encounters Gaffy, Ramza and Rad on their missions. Whether he chooses to assist you in a bounty hunt, or compete with you for a bounty's head, is up to your discretion and his "offer." Maybe an "either/or" choice to bargain him as a usable guest with gil (which he will list the price himself) on certain missions, whereas in other certain missions he will choose to compete with you (again, an appropriate price to keep him off your bounty). I think this idea will be unique, but I've heard money is hard to come by in Mercs so this "pay to sway" proposition might need some compromise. And yes, I was just thinking about having Daigoro assist him as a separate unit.

Also, this idea might not have to parallel with the Gilgamesh arc. I just thought it would be a nice added twist to have these two infamous samurais having a sort of vendetta with one another, but if you're going to use the "Epic of Gilgamesh" as the base for Gilgamesh's entry by all means do that. ).

Hmm... Y'know what's a good bounty to consider? The legendary duo of Yoshitsune and Benkei, and the battle should be done on a bridge. :)

Smile That epic is a wonderful read.
Hmm, well there's definitely room for developing Gilgamesh's character. After Enkidu dies at the last portion of the sidequest, he doesn't have much more story. I say we should exploit the similarities and differences between Yojimbo and Gilgamesh and make them rivals of sorts. But I'd definitely like to see the party compete against Yojimbo for bounties or something; that would be cool.

Oh and I still need to expand my old tournament idea...Methinks Yojimbo should make an appearance.

I played not long ago FFVI and I got some idea. How about making a scene when seven reliquians (since they reminds Narshe guards the most) attacking Terra, and Locke with two Mogles must protect her? Then you would have choice to either help Locke and moogles, or help Narshe guards instead. Locke sprite is currently being created by Bloodthirster, and I want to do Terra sprite and moogles. I just know not where the scene could occur, maybe in Dorter slum? Or some woods? I will leave it to you to decide LD. Also, after this you might still continue this small sidequest in some way, I just must to think how...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 04, 2010, 12:09:20 pm
Wouldn't it need to take place in a cave or something? If you're willing to utilize the colliery (a la Beowulf's sidequest in Vanilla), this could become a multi-part sidequest...I personally like the idea a lot, so I'd definitely like to see this get fleshed out.

Now that I think about it, there are going to be a ton of cameos in this game. I hope it's not overboard...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

Yeah I know it all occured in cave, but I couldn't remember if there are any caves in FFT.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 04, 2010, 02:52:36 pm
I hear ya. There aren't any real caves in the game, but depending on how this sidequest is written, you may be able to use the underground cemetery of Limberry Castle, or the various stages of the Colliery (which I like, since it kinda looks like the city of Narshe), or the underground passage in Goland, the five floors of the Underground Book Storage, or maybe even one of the Deep Dungeon maps (if you could get the lights on). Take a look at the maps section of the site (http://ffhacktics.com/maps.php) to get some ideas--that's what I did for a couple of the sidequests I suggested.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

Great idea! A great homage to FFVI and Coillery's names are bound to changed continually throughout the game (probably use the place where you fight Schinoeg to save Reis). I also have a plot line ready for that which might work out well.

That sprite looks pretty damn good, my only suggestion would be to make the pom-pon point at more of a curved angle, kind of like the picture. As for the portrait...I'll see what I can do, though I haven't worked with monsters much, so no promises.

Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 11, 2010, 01:04:36 pm
Haha, yeah I should be taking a look at the Moogle portrait, but it may take some time...

Oh and you know what would really make the FFVI sidequest interesting? Incentive not to help Locke. For instance, since Moogles are supposed to be extinct in Ivalice, Ramza and Rad should have the option to capture/poach the Moogles for a huge monetary incentive or perhaps some wicked item.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Kagebunji on January 12, 2010, 09:19:51 am
Mav that's nice! And since Ramza is more of a bad-ass in Mercenaries, it serves him right ^^. And looking forward to the portrait ;)

I just thought about the sidequest, how about three choices?
1. Help Narshe Guards. Reward: big amount of gil
2. Protect the girl. Reward: Some small treasure(leaving it to your imagination), and you are able to continue sidequest
3. Capture/Poach the moogles. Reward: Some great item and small amount of gil.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 12, 2010, 01:14:29 pm
For number three, I'd say the reward should be a great item and a modest amount of gil (i.e. not too big, not too small). And on the third option, would you have to defeat the Narshe Guards and/or Locke and Terra too, or could you just kill the Moogles and have the quest end right there?

Also, let's see what else we can come up with for continuing the sidequest--I'll need to take another look at FFVI to get some ideas.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Kagebunji on January 12, 2010, 01:35:44 pm
Hmmm, I s'pose killing everyone but moogles will suffice. I'm sure Gaffy wouldn't want to share this precious treasure :)
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 12, 2010, 03:02:33 pm
Here's a way to continue working with Locke and Terra, straight off of the Final Fantasy Wiki:
Quote from: "url=http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Sidequest#Final_Fantasy_VI]This page[/url]:"]Mog -or- the Golden Hairpin Sidequest- After returning Terra back to her controlled state, the player could go to Narshe for the sidequest. It involves a wild goose chase of Lone Wolf the Pickpocket up to the cliff where Valigarmanda is settled. Then the player may choose Mog or the Golden Hairpin. As they choose one, the other choice falls down the cliff, and can never be retrieved, with the exception of Mog, who could be recruited in the World of Ruin.
Quote from: "url=http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Lone_Wolf]This page[/url]"]After obtaining the Blackjack, the party can return to the treasure room in Narshe and find Lone Wolf trying to open a locked chest. However, he flees to the mines. The party can follow him to the ledge where Valigarmanda is sitting. There, he is holding Mog hostage. If the party waits where he asks them to for a minute, he and Mog will fly off the ledge, and the party must choose to save either Lone Wolf or Mog. Freeing Lone Wolf gives the party a Gold Hairpin, while freeing Mog causes Mog to join the party. However, no matter how the party chooses, Lone Wolf will fall down.
We could probably adapt this too, just figure out what sprite Lone Wolf would need, rework the locations a bit, and adapt the ultimatum to work with FFT's system. This also gives the team the opportunity to get whatever incentive there was for that Moogle again. A third sidequest involving another Moogle could be added, on the chance that the team chooses the Gold Hairpin (or whatever item it's replaced with).
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Kagebunji on January 12, 2010, 04:13:13 pm
Shit too bad you can't make join peoples in Merc. I think that if you choose to help Mog, you should get some spear (he always wielded spears when I played as him), and if you choose gold hairpin, Lone wolf becomes your quest and you must finish off Mog(maybe some others moogle could appear? Cause Mog alone won't stand a chance), and you get ofcourse gold hairpin as a reward.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 12, 2010, 05:09:01 pm
Sounds good: you have the choice of Hairpin and a dead Moogle or a spear and a dead Lone Wolf. Maybe Mog could just run off, so you have a third quest against someone tough.

Okay, here's the WIP of the Moogle portrait. It's based off this image (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/mavken/64274276.jpg). This is really tough for me: I don't know what to do about the neck, I'm having trouble placing and shading the inner part of the ears, and I don't even know where to begin on the forehead. Someone help me out. Or just yell at me for doing a bad job. This is the closest I've come to doing a portrait completely from scratch.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on January 14, 2010, 08:16:25 pm
Well, it looks good but I feel that that artwork don't really go well with the sprite. The one that Kage posted was the sprite, so I feel that should be the portrait. ^^
What you guys think?
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 14, 2010, 08:42:25 pm
I was just going to complain and tell you to scrap it, but then I realized what your biggest problem is.  Your reference pic makes it really, really fuzzy.  yours is only partially fuzzy.  The forehead of yours is completely flat, and that is murdering the portrait for me.

Also, the ears could definitely be bigger.  Go all out and borrow the reference's ears as you did for the cheeks.  Though that strange shape under the eye looks bad, even in the reference image.

Mouth and under the nose could use some work...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 14, 2010, 10:15:41 pm
As far as the art work goes, I'm pretty much going for that style--I'm replacing the ears and the body with something that looks a bit more like the actual sprite. The portrait's incomplete, and the forehead's just a blob for now.

I don't really feel like going anywhere else with this portrait, since I don't really know what I'm doing. The only reason I used that reference image was because all these other Moogle concepts look nothing like FFT's style. They lack shading, depth, and style. Back to the drawing board for me...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on January 14, 2010, 10:29:55 pm

Actually, the moogle artwork you posted, it's from FFXII or one of FFTA's right? I really hate that design of those moogles, IMO best moogle design was that of FFIX, simple, cute, fluffy, that's what moogle is about ^^

Well, the reference picture (Kage posted) is flat and normal but fits. So, we have to improvise a little bit, make it fluffy.

I kinda want it to look normal, but it will be flat on port indeed. Maybe adding those small whiskers(or what is that thing called, near his nose, the black things). I leave this to your big imagination ;)

I also know how to fuck things up, but it's all good. Here's a new portrait, taken completely from the FFT artwork. This needs to be fleshed out.

If this could be converted into FFT style port it would be nice, hovewer the angle is wrong :/

Shit, I will try to do all these cute moogles ^^ First is female moogle, second is Artemicion, and third is...the moogle that saves game?

Looking forward.

Alright, we can try to fix this version up then:

Alright. Looks better and fitting. Just need to clean it up a little bit. ^^

Post by: Kagebunji on January 15, 2010, 11:35:53 am
Yup, this one is great, just some cleaning and another great portrait will be on your account :P

Edit: I wonder why he don't have that connection to pom-pon. And also, you made my life a lot harder MAv, now I have to add this fur around the neck into sprite :/ Btw, isn't she a female one?
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 15, 2010, 12:44:52 pm
I suppose that antenna was too thin for when he scaled it down.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Kagebunji on January 15, 2010, 12:49:58 pm
Lol, I didn't realized until now that it was scaled down, I thought it's a rough FFT port :)
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 15, 2010, 01:10:39 pm
Yeah, I quickly scaled this down and threw it up here, which is why the colors are iffy and the antenna is disconnected. And if adding the fur trim is going to be a problem, I'll work on taking it out. Hell, I could just as easily use the purple Moogle...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Kagebunji on January 15, 2010, 01:34:18 pm
If you could, resize and work on purple one (o'course recolor it to that white if possible), and plz clean up the one with fur, it will be great for female one ^^

By the way, Kage, did you add the furry/fluffy on the neck?

EDIT: Perhaps I shouldn't ^^
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 27, 2010, 07:38:48 pm
Good progress, but it doesn't look like the pompom is coming from the middle of its head.  Might want to better center that end of the antenna.

Come on Jim, you're good at this stuff and you're more familiar with working from scratch than I am...Help a brother out! Once I get to that furry collar, I'm screwed.

Regarding the pompom, good eye, Silvas, I just took care of that on this update. I feel like the right side of his face isn't shaded well. I probably need to add some more shades of white too...Anyways, lemme know what you think:

Geez it's soo sweet, I'm loving it already :) this will make perfect female moogle. As for male, I think it will be easier than female, you won't need to play with fur on male one.

As for sprite...yeah I will do fur version, but are there some spr's wich have similiar kind of fur on them??
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 28, 2010, 01:16:03 pm
I don't think there are any that are quite so fluffy.  Best I can think of is a Behemoth's mane.  I think this is something that is going to have to be "custom" to really pull off.  Just keep it true to what's there and be creative with the shading.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 28, 2010, 03:23:12 pm
Yeah, I don't know who to base the little fur collar off of...I think Silvas's suggestion of the Behemoth is on the right track, but it too would need some good editing.

Okay, the portrait is almost complete, but I think this is the point where I need someone to take over. The fur collar is just too much for me...I don't exactly know how to pull off a "realistic" fur collar. I tried, but failed. The good news is that there are still two colors left on the palette, so if that helps (for whatever reason), feel free to utilize 'em on this attachment:
[attachment=1:3dkklxor]moogleportrait.png[/attachment:3dkklxor]

EDIT: I've tried to complete it on my own, the result is the following:
[attachment=0:3dkklxor]moogleportrait.png[/attachment:3dkklxor]

If anyone wants to edit either of these to make them look better, please feel free to; I think I've done what I can.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 28, 2010, 07:37:13 pm
Face probably could use more shading than just on the side.  The shape of the face is different from a human's after all.  On the small version, the pompom doesn't quite look round at the bottom left.  There's some dark there that sticks out and makes it look angular.  The red of the ears probably shouldn't be part of the fluffiness.  The left ear could probably use some simple work.  Keep the red on the inside of the ears.  Other than that, I think you've done a very good job.

Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 28, 2010, 09:34:19 pm
Whoa, thanks, Jim. Looks good to me; if others like it, I'll take the shading from my version and the collar (as well as the nicer whiskers) from yours and see if I can make some kind of super Moogle portrait. Again, thanks a ton, Jimmy.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 28, 2010, 10:10:16 pm
Now that pompom looks round.  (You went a bit too far on your pompom "correction" mav.)  Can't believe I overlooked the missing whiskers on the far side.  I like that style fur too.  Unless that collar is going to be made darker (and I'm not sure if it should be), I'm not sure how much you could improve upon that.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 29, 2010, 08:11:11 am
Yeah, I don't think I could improve Jimmy's corrections, but here's my attempt (I took his pompom and fur collar, and just added some more facial shading). There are still two colors left on the palette though, should we utilize them? And if so, how?
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 29, 2010, 02:33:03 pm
I see no need for using two more colors.  I would accept the portrait as-is at this point.

Wow Jimmy that was an amazing job with the fur. Very nice work Mav and everyone else, this turned out nicely. My only complaint is that odd white pixel at the top of his nose. It looks very odd and random.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on January 29, 2010, 03:48:43 pm
I believe it's supposed to be a shine, and it does look like a shine on the smaller view.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Cheetah on January 29, 2010, 03:52:34 pm
I don't think it works as a shine when it is up against the white of his fur. Maybe try moving it one pixel down, or use on of your extra colors to make it more red instead of pracitically straight white.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 29, 2010, 04:04:15 pm
Hmm, I've been bothered by the shine too, Cheetah. I could go brighter (as in completely white), but that's probably overkill, or I could go darker (lemme toy around with it later today)...you know what? I may just remove the shine all together. Anyways, I think the portrait's pretty much ready, but I may just fiddle with the leftover colors some to see if I can't fix some details.

Now post the sprite, Kage.

Hah, thanks Jimmy; I owe it to you for pulling this portrait together. This is the final version--just has that pink pixel there instead of the bright white one.
[attachment=0:3hovmzco]moogleportrait.png[/attachment:3hovmzco]

How should we go about doing the portrait for the Moogle without the fur collar? Should it look just like this one, just with a regular neckline? I was hoping we could base it off Mog's portrait in FFVI--just modify it to look right in the FFT environment. It's up to you guys (cause I'm too lazy to work on it).
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

Mav, that pink is hardly noticeable, unfortunately. How about this?

Also, moogle without fur.

Post by: mav on January 30, 2010, 11:15:00 am
Ah yes, that pink pixel looks much better.

Now I'm wondering why I didn't use these Moogles from the beginning--they would have looked closer to Kage's design anyway...

Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 30, 2010, 11:37:30 am
Here (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mog_%28Final_Fantasy_VI%29) are a couple images on the Final Fantasy wiki. See the portrait on the far right? It's next to the animated Moogle freaking out--we could let the male Moogle look like that (after some necessary tweaking).
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

Eww...That's ugly ><
Major tweakings needed.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 30, 2010, 12:27:48 pm
Haha, your honesty is breathtaking. My main desire is to just have two completely different looking Moogle portraits--we don't have to, but it would be more appealing. I don't see too many different Moogles to base portraits off though, so give me some time to find something better to base this off.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on January 30, 2010, 12:41:42 pm
While that moogle is ugly, two different moogle portraits are definitely better than having the same moogle portraits with only difference of the collar. Don't worry, I'm supporting this.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on January 31, 2010, 02:11:36 pm
Alright, let's see if we can work with this. I've attached a new portrait that can be used for the male Moogle (or whichever one doesn't have the collar).

See the Moogle on our right? If we can mimic that and tone down the cuteness factor, this could work.

Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

Alright, I started shading the new Moogle portrait...and then I realized that something's gone terribly amiss: pillow shading like there's no tomorrow. Someone help me out...and it looks like we'll need a lighter palette for this one.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)

And thanks a lot for Female one, she looks fantastic! Is she 16 colors btw?
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: SilvasRuin on February 05, 2010, 02:15:19 pm
I have to agree, I'd prefer the male being an edit of the female.  For one thing, the different styles are fairly easy to notice.  The difference is a bit too jarring.

I always thought they were red, but I thought I saw someone mention it in another topic on this forum, so I figured I'd mention it here too. I've gotten the male Moogle portrait completed (essentially). All it needs is some tweaking and it should be done. I've also included an alternate palette, since I got kinda bored...
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: Cheetah on February 06, 2010, 12:10:54 pm
Basic idea looks good, might have a bit of pillow shading. I think you are mixing up your light source on his body compared to his head. The light is looking like it is upper left, putting the shadow on his left side, but on his chest his left side is the lighter side. Try giving him a shirt just for variety like in that one preview.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on February 06, 2010, 12:32:00 pm
Yeah, I think his left hand could use some more shadows. His right chest, near his hand should be lighter.

Add back some of the line you removed when you were adjusting the shading and see if that makes the arm look right again.

I'm not sure that is the problem. I think the right arm looked just as odd as it does now.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: mav on February 06, 2010, 04:23:39 pm
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to fix the arm--on the original image (http://ffhacktics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=5146) this is based off of, there's a line that separates the arm from the chest (which I had earlier, as Silvas pointed out). I could add it back, but the shading looked awkward last time, so I'd have to fix that. Right now I tried to clean up the shading around the chest, chin, and right arm--let me know if this is in the right or wrong direction.
Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on February 06, 2010, 08:18:43 pm
His arm is bit pointy in the previous one but the latest is fixed. If you want to separate the arm and the chest, you could add some shadings there using second light shade.

Good idea, Jimmy; I'll do that before the next upload. I do have a question though: should his right arm be darker? I'm having a hard time figuring out how to shade him properly...

Title: Re: Sidequest Ideas (31/40)
Post by: jimmyjw88 on February 07, 2010, 01:40:51 am
Well, now I noticed there's a blob of dark shades between his right arm and face. Maybe reduce that? Also, maybe add another pixel or two of second light shade on his arm there (the separation line).

That's fine Kage, take your time. Once the portrait's complete maybe we should go back and flesh out the sidequest. We could put it in the format that LD outlined on the first post, that way all three parts (or however many) will be ready for when he comes back.
Quote from: "jimmyjw88"Well, now I noticed there's a blob of dark shades between his right arm and face. Maybe reduce that? Also, maybe add another pixel or two of second light shade on his arm there (the separation line).

I know you are just trying to follow the source with his right arm, but I think you need to make adjustments so that it makes sense in that frame. Just make the armpit line shorter so that it doesn't go up so high. Try like 3-4 pixels lower. Sorry that one little detail is just irking me.

I wanted to give him a dark wings actually, but red will work too. As to palette, I will use Pieke's white, so it will quite match with the port :)

There's room in the palette for dark wings, as far as I remember. If the sprite already has dark wings, then I'll update the portrait to match...or you could just post the sprite. ;)

The current colors of portrait are great, I think I will stay with red wings on sprite as well.

Good stuff. Hopefully we'll get to see these sidequests, in some way, shape, or form...

Yeah, there is a small chance now that those sidequests will be done, oh damn, I guess that making Terra sprite is not neccesary now :/

Make 'em anyways.  Hell, if Mercenaries does wind up going under for good (I hope not), we can make a Final Fantasy Tactics Medley patch out of these.  It can be nothing but fun, random references.

Do you need more sidequests ideas, LD? I had a lot of fun doing this, and wouldn't mind doing more, hehe.

Let us know if you need any more details on the sidequests we've already submitted, LD. I feel like I should redo some of the ideas I submitted...

Bomb King Fight

Activation Method - chapter 3 - poach a bomb or explosive or grande and go to any fur shop (idk if it's possible).

Area - Bervenia volacano.

a bigger version of bomb named bomb king its angry with you for killing his sons, you have to fight against 6 bombs(explosive, granade) and the Bomb King, as reward for win the battle you get the bomb sword a a sword with low attack but that inflict flare when hits.

Oh certainly. If anyone feels their idea isn't up to snuff, than by all means, submit an improvement.

EDIT: Scattman, that's a bit... well very basic. It's not possible to begin with. Another problem is that even if it were, Mercenaries only has 1 family of monsters rather than the 3 FFT had. Now another problem is that Poach no longer exists. There's a new system in place called "Bounty Hunter" where certain "marks" in battle (randoms, sub-quests, even some story missions may have them). That can be "captured" sent to the "Warden's Office" and dependent on who the mark was, receive one of two "tickets", It's basically an overhaul of the Poach system, that follows most things in that ordinary system and changes it.

I'd rather use Curu's Bomb Lord

Yeah, but good luck with finishing Curu's Bomb Lord. Slightly change the arms, Scatt, and it will be better,
