Got in the other two main frames. Once these are fully fixed, then work on all the other animations will commence. ^_^

I agree with Mike, I think Fein's hair scheme worked out very well.

@Sephirot24

If your comment was directed toward the other portrait of the guy in black that Zalge and Roly are discussing, I think that is something from the Naruto thread. Why they aren't discussing it in there is beyond me, though.

@ Zalge and Roly

Considering this thread here is in related to the topic of Lulu's sprite, you guys should probably take your discussion of that other portrait over to the Naruto thread.

Hmm, well I'm not entirely sure what to do about the hat, then. I thought I had shaded it correctly, but I suppose inexperience has proven otherwise. I will see what I can do to rectify this, but the errors in the hat may have to stay for awhile until i have completed more of the sprite to test in-game.  But I'll toy with the values to see if I can come up with something more accurate.

In regards to the Knight's cape, I'll test that out then. Nothing to lose, after all, and a more detailed shading job never hurt anybody.  Thanks. ^_^

EDIT: BTW, Asmo, forgot to mention it, but thanks for the edit on the chest and legs. ^_^

Thanks for the critique, Asmo. I appreciate your keen eye, as always.

- The shading on the hat is the exact same as it was for Elidibs, only in blacks now instead of browns.
- I had to do the torso from scratch on the diagonal, so I was sort of winging the shading. I'll try to sort that out.
- The patch is supposed to be his hair, or that was my original intention, at least. If it doesn't look right, I'll probably just get rid of it.
- I'll try making the entire cape darker then, since the sprite is 16 colors again since I added the three colors that make up the boots and gloves. For the front view the shoulders are shaded exactly as they are on the female knight's cape, so they'll stay as is, I think.

UPDATE

Side View added. Attempted to fix both the shading on the pants and the issue with the shoulder pointed out by jimmy.

The sprite looks like it needs to be a bit larger.  The arms also seem to be incorrectly sized, but I suppose this goes along with the body.  By comparison, the Mindmaster's right arm is only half the length of the Knight next him's.  Also, if the legs are crossed beneath him, you are probably gonna have to draw redraw his lower half a bit, because right now it looks more like he is simply a floating torso rather than someone floating cross-legged.

UPDATE

Went with the browns from the Archer's boots again for the boots and and gloves.  Also provided a Front Left view for more accurate critiquing.

The darkest shade is a color that wound up going into the Black Palette, so I tried to swap it out for a dark shade of green to match the cape while separating itself from the blacks.  Didn't really work very well, I guess.

@Vanya: I also really want to see a FFT hack based on this game at some point.

@ Kaijyuu: Indeed it was a very limited game and many people couldn't quite sit through it long enough purely on account of the boredom. As far as having only Attack and Item goes, it does make things somewhat dull, but I found a certain appeal in the characters of the story not all having unique skills, or even special moves pertaining to their class. I may simply be weird that way, but only being able to Attack or utilize some magical characters made the game require much more thought in its battles, and that held a certain appeal for me. As for the story, I loved it.

The Lounge / Vandal Hearts (The overlooked classic)
October 10, 2009, 01:51:23 am
Though the fact is that there are many of us here at FFH who have lived in the realm of Turn-based Strategy RPGs for awhile now, I find myself continuously surprised by the incredible amount of people who have never played (or even know about) Konami's classic Playstation SRPG "Vandal Hearts."

For those of you who have never before played the game, let me be the one to tell you - "You should play it."

Now, don't get me wrong.  I wouldn't classify this game as epic. In fact, I wouldn't even really say it is as good as FFT as far as SRPGs go. But it is certainly good enough to hold its own.

While it doesn't really have the quality of FFT as far as graphics goes, it makes up for it by providing you with a great story. Not as great as FFT's, but it's still really good.  Additionally, whereas FFT is chock full of "Generic Random Name Characters" and a few "Unique Player Characters" that have at least some relevance to the overall plot, Vandal Hearts has a large group of fairly well-developed characters, all with names and back stories, and almost every single one of them actively playing an important role in the progression of the plot.

The plot, however, IS rather short, and VERY linear. The armaments from beginning to end are almost entirely shop-purchased, enemies have equipment you can NEVER obtain, there are NO random battles, and there is really only one sidequest in the entire game, which is actually a 'hidden' quest that must be accomplished "as you go" throughout the main story. The shortness of the game is also amplified by the fact that the level of the final villain is not only preset, it is also less than 50. This is largely due to the fact that the lack of random battles completely prevents power-leveling (unless you use the only known cheating method), which is a plus to those of us who enjoy the challenge.

Now, on another positive note - where FFT limited the number of PCs in battle to 5 (or 4 + up to 2 Guests), Vandal Hearts starts you off with only 3 members in your party, but every ally you gain as you progress through the story is an active member in each future battle. By the time you have acquired your final ally, you stand strong as a party of no less than 12. This is, of course, balanced by the fact that the enemy groups you fight increase in quantity/quality as your party does.

There is, however, a downside to this party set up and that is the "Vandal Hearts" Class System, which leaves much to be desired. The classes are very linear, and provide very little for the player to be creative or imaginative with. The large number of characters you possess in battle makes up for this somewhat, but not entirely.

Aside from what I listed, I can't really describe much more about this game without giving up story spoilers. But I will say this much. I would like those who read this topic to give this game a shot. As far as SRPGs go, it is definitely an overlooked classic.

Thanks for your time. ^_^

P.S. - If nothing else, this game has one of the best Ocarina songs I've ever heard. It's title is "Vicissitudes of Fortune". It isn't very long, and is rather repetitive, but I'm certain you will no doubt hear the power in its notes. Look it up sometime on Google or Youtube.

Okay, then I have a question.  What colors would look good on this thing? Because I'm going for something dark, since this is supposed to be an opposing counterpart to Kletian (who dressed in silver and gold), but I'm paranoid about going too dark against a black background.

UPDATE - I came up with a color scheme for his torso and legs based around Elidibs' hat, whilst keeping the original colors from the Archer's boots to use on the boots and gloves. The cape I made red because it seemed to be the color that best complemented the browns in the hat.  Also, I removed the neckerchief due to color constraints.  The sprite is now exactly 16 colors, though they may have to be changed to keep him from looking like a Red Mage knock-off.

Yeah, palette is the next big thing to work on. I just wanted to get his body squared away in its shape mainly. And I'm actually thinking of going with Elidibs' hat, as well.  It will look a bit less comical than the Black Mage's.

Spriting / Concept Sprite (Arcanist)
October 08, 2009, 03:06:55 am
I have only a front view, but this is my concept view for the Arcanist, a class of Mage that serves as a counterpart to the Sorcerer (Kletian), and is the basis of my original character, Garynhardt Saigas.  Because it is currently nothing more than a slightly edited compilation of various body parts, it is way over the color limit, but I intend to sort the palette out after hearing your general opinions on the way the character looks.  It may also be slightly too tall, on account of its hat, but the hat can be edited to a smaller version if necessary.

EDIT: Concept now uses the hat from Elidibs rather than the Black Mage. Elidibs' hat looks more befitting this particular sprite, as well as less comically large.

EDIT 2: For some reason both Gimp and Photobucket converted the image into JPEG from its original BMP after I saved it, so now the colors are all screwed up.  This will be fixed later.

__________

This character was generated using the Male Archer's boots, the Female Knight's cape, the Elidibs' hat, Mustadio's gloves, and Wiegraf's neckerchief + edited torso pieces.
