event modding

I have made myself somewhat familiar (I think) with the syntax of the game's code.
My problem is, the difference between setup and the event itself.
I have changed the map of the orbonne prayer, some characters and speech. However nothing in the setup section made any remote sense, so I left it alone.
My test run at orbonne was really screwy.
I had chosen the map with the docked ship, and the script was still running a conversation with agrias and ovelia, although they were not present on the map.

While the tutorial was very helpful, there are still some gaps that I am unsure of handling with trial and error.
Second question, to update every event, do I need to use the test.evt file every time, for each event?
