The PSX is a nice system but it has a lot of limitations, and you can only go so far with hacking.  Creating a new engine to run just an FFT style game would be perfect.

It can have higher res graphics (but would keep the same basic style).

The battle system could be over-hauled too.  Remove the grid based maps for instance, and instead have movement/attacks, etc be based on spheres.

Keep all of the good FFT stuff of course.  Using the more balanced classes from 1.3 would be a nice start.

It could also open up the possibility for online play as well.  This would need some balancing.  Automatically making each team the same level might be a start.

If you change things enough, it could also be entirely legal.  Like RosenkreuzStilette, which is heavily inspired by Mega Man games.  Though, if this route is taken, then (sadly) all the distinctly FF stuff would have to be removed or renamed.

this is acctualy possible, of course it may be easier to mod an existing RTS computer game than to make a completely new one from scratch, just please dont use the night watch engine, game sucks balls

I was actually imagining something along these lines not too long ago. Unfortunately, I myself do not have the skills to make such a thing, but if someone else can, I'd be glad to help in any way I can. Especially the single-player campaign story, as I've had several great ideas in the past few months for that.
We will build cities in a day, we will build towers to the heavens. We will be heroes.
This sleeping city doesn't know what's coming. She doesn't feel the heat.
Even when the darkness surrounds us, we shall light up the night.

I suggest that this type of project should get it's own forum ^__^

But I like the grid based maps...
I really like this idea. I've always wondered about the legality of doing this. I think we'll be fine, if MUGEN didn't get shut down, I don't think we'll be in much trouble. As long as we don't profit, we'll be fine.

What did I just say? If we profit, we'll get into legal trouble.

not if the profit is in the advertisement department cause technically you are making money of the advertiseing and not the product my biggest example here is any web comic that uses video games as a base they dont make money off the comic it all comes from those adds very few people pay attention to

You'd need a programmer ... and a gaming engine.

The best course of action would be to find someone who has any experience with programming a game in java if you want it to run on a webpage which would be the best way to go about it.  Of course there are other ways to go about this and i wish i could help ya more but my programming skills are basic.

Not really.  We'd have to go around FFT and gaming communities and try to recruit people with spare time and programming skills.  Which is why it might be nice to come up with some sort of project name, and make a forum on this board, as a kind of "homebase" for the time being.

If Rozenkreuzstilette and other doujin games can be made, which are parodies or "tributes" of other games, then a spiritual sequel of FFT can be made.

I think such a project would be needed since it's clear that Square will never make a real FFT sequel.  Just more Advance series drivel.

It should be noted that some things from the advance series should be brought into the original, most notably the ability to undo a move.

Yes that little change is my favorite part of the advanced series.  It adds a bit of a fire emblem esque part to the game.

There are a few good things from the FFTA series.  I like that there are no random battles for instance and that you can see and avoid your enemies.
