Did they find a way to fix that lag yet?

It's stretched both vertically and horizontally. Vertically to cover the resolution increase, horizontally to maintain the original aspect ratio, then the border expanded horizontally. It's the same effect as playing the PSX game on PSP with zoom at original aspect ratio, just with extended horizontal borders instead of black columns. In fact, the images even match up perfectly as such.

PSX, though POPS sadly resizes this image to provide proper 4:3 aspect ratio, as the original resolution should be 256x240
PSP, which forgoes dithering for the Vaseline effect of resampled zoom
PSX with zoom, overlayed ontop of the PSP version

@vanya - I'm using a 2k piano black psp, the region of the game is US, east coast. It's also updated.

I get what your saying, though I don't think it looks bad at all.

Was the first image taken on the normal or original setting?

There should be a noticable lag in the speed of the effects compared to the sound effect. Compare Gafgarion's sword skills to the PSX version and see if there's a difference. In the original the sound effect is supposes to sync perfectly with the animation, both ending at the same time. When I tried the game on my PSP (US 1000 series no difference in performance to US 2000 series) the sound effect finished half way through the animations of most effects. I tried the actual game disc and then an ISO with clock speed upped to the max and the de-sync was still present.

stretching 4:3 to 16:9 sloppily = fail

Original, which sadly does not always run games at the original resolution.

Ah. I always use the normal setting, so I wasn't sure which one was used in the picture.

I haven't used it in a while. Is it a firmware update or a patch from Square Enix?

Not sure, my friend said he'd update it for me before I played. But since you don't have it I'd have to guess firmware.

I have the newest CFW on my PSP, but I haven't loaded WotL in many moons. I'll give it a go.

Most recent firmware has no effect on the lag whatsoever, be it ISO or UMD, or on fat or slim.

MagiTek may not be noticing the lag for whatever reason. The firmware doesn't make a difference.

After looking at my own screenshots, the PSP version looks to me like the POPS normal setting with a widened camera lens (not sure if that's the right terminology). It 's stretched a bit vertically, but horizontally, I don't see any stretching.

I always use the "Normal" setting when playing FFT on POPS.

That is possible because I don't notice the lag anymore and the PSX version appears fast as hell.

Heh, thanks. I'm working on redoing it from scratch, but I'm trying to find a good technique for digitizing my hand-drawn portraits first before I continue. I was messing around with the original character designs from PSX FFT to see how they were resized and cleaned for the final character portraits, but with the results I'm getting... yeah, might be better to just do pixel art.

On the subject of screen resizing, I despise interpolation. I'd rather have 1:1 resize with no smoothing, or no resize at all. The 'original' setting in POPS is the least offensive resizing in FFT, and easiest to just grit my teeth and tolerate.

A correction on my previous post, as the normal setting is stretched a bit horizontally. I've been playing the PSX version on that setting, so I guess I didn't catch that before.

Considering that PSX games output at 640 x 480 (NTSC games anyway) and the limitations of the PSP itself (the screen is only 480 x 272), the original setting is as close as one gets to how it looks on a TV. It's 320 x 240, which is half of the game's original resolution, and is small enough to fit on the PSP's screen.

Personally, I don't care much for the original setting, as everything seems too small and far away. The normal setting's bit of stretching and smoothing looks much better to me, IMO.

Also, I like the avatar. I should make a new one and stop ripping off the MTA.
