Title: Music Thread
Post by: Samuraiblackbelt on September 08, 2009, 06:25:56 pm
Common interests, common hobby, common music? Share what music you listen to, and give and get ideas about what music you might want to try.

I like anything and would be willing to listen to any suggestions, some of my favorite bands are:

Blind Guardian
Project 86
Demon Hunter
Chevelle
As I Lay Dying
Flogging Molly
Papa Roach
Dead Poetic
Rage Against the Machine
10 Years
Royal Bliss

there are 100+ bands that I would listen to on a regular basis of I had the money to buy all their CDs, and another 100 or more that I would buy the CDs of only if I had the CDs of the first 100, and another 100 or more that I only like a few songs by and would never buy an album by them unless I started to like more of thier stuff.

I can appreciate any music that I listen to, except for a few songs and bands that I really don't like

I would really like to find some good viking metal though, haven't heard much

Look, if you people are gonna recommend some artists recommend some albums or songs, I don't like shooting into the dark.

My desert albums, so this is what I recommend to anyone who's looking for new tunes to listen to:

Blues Traveler - Four -- contains their hits Hook and Run Around, but all in all BT is quite jam-band-ish, with John Popper doing killer harmonica and singing just awesome.)  Favorite tracks are Stand and Look Around.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoA5OtWQ5O0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoA5OtWQ5O0)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6jC_kGrd9s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6jC_kGrd9s)

Lucky Boys Confusion - Throwing the Game -- Second album and major label debut of the Illinois pop-punk-rock group.  Fred Astaire is probably the best "single/radio-friendly" off the album, though I prefer the gems that are Not About Debra and Slip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw7W5zHV ... re=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw7W5zHVHbU&feature=related)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXerNxp4pJA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXerNxp4pJA)

Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind -- Half of this album made it to radio play, it was their big breakthrough featuring Semi-charmed life, though the B-side songs like Motorcycle Drive By and London kickass.  Alt-pop-rock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh5_Wdd80lE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh5_Wdd80lE)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXRLEyIoJZA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXRLEyIoJZA)

Infected Mushroom - I'm the Supervisor -- though most of their albums are good, this is the one that takes the cake for me.  Psychdelic trance/electronic music.  It's like techno, but far more active and less beat monotony.  Most popular song off it is probably Cities of the Future.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8HjaKSbR-k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8HjaKSbR-k)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Cbfm1PStA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Cbfm1PStA)

Dispatch - Silent Steeples -- Rock jam band that dips into reggae, funk, folk, and a bit of Ska.  Bang Bang (featuring The General, their most popular song) is probably the more recognized album, but Steeples is more an album and less a collection of songs.  Favorites off that include the title track, Elias, and Flying Horses.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re9j9awAJH4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re9j9awAJH4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljVR3Bodxmw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljVR3Bodxmw)

Guster - Lost and Gone Forever -- Goes very hand and hand with Dispatch as far as music stylings go.  Popular tracks include Barrel of a Gun, Happier, and Fa Fa.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7vuBlyXLJg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7vuBlyXLJg)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrYxTOzH3YU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrYxTOzH3YU)

Cory Morrow - The Man That I Have Been -- Texas.  Country.  Now before half of you cringe at the genre label, this is still quite rock-driven music, and as a genre they basically spit on the Nashville scene (he in fact has one track called "Nashville sucks").  Favorite tracks include Texas Time Travelling Machine and the title track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qsFxE7Zv6M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qsFxE7Zv6M)

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Classic pop-rock, featuring hits like Gold Dust Woman and Go Your Own Way, but my favorite songs off the album are Never Going Back Again and The Chain.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgC6yJKo ... re=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgC6yJKoCXs&feature=related)

Led Zeppelin - Zoso (IV) - Anyone who's listened to any amount of classic rock knows Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog.  Just wonderful, solid, rock music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9TGj2jrJk8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9TGj2jrJk8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4oUJUCDX1s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4oUJUCDX1s)

Beatles - Revolver -- Because this was the stark transition album from more poppy Beatles to "hey we just dropped acid and smoked pot", though Rubber Soul was the first sign of such a transition and then it exploded all over the wall after Revolver with Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band.  Featured automatic double-tracking overlay, which was a recording breakthrough.   Notably contains Eleanor Rigby.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyJLxV0_-8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyJLxV0_-8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8X4eoNfm5E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8X4eoNfm5E)

Peter Gabriel - So -- Again, another album that had half of its song on the radio, featuring hits like In Your Eyes and Sledgehammer, though my fave B-sides are Mercy Street and Don't Give Up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gu-OQcZXU8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gu-OQcZXU8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiCRZLr9oRw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiCRZLr9oRw)

Say Anything - Is a Real Boy.  Their best album; fabulous frontman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfptieWXEJA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfptieWXEJA)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwjfRSUme3U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwjfRSUme3U)

Token Honorable Mentions include some strong female vocals:

Alison Krauss + Union Station - So Long So Wrong
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmXCMo-IOdQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmXCMo-IOdQ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoQY-YUTsrw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoQY-YUTsrw)

Frou Frou/Imogen Heap - (any of it)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO_nNnfvxsE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO_nNnfvxsE)

and ska:

and then finally:

Ok... people here have a giant musical taste

but since i'm a old classic rock elitist boring man, i don't listen to about 99% of what have been posted here

my favorite bands are (in no specific order)

- King Crimson
Probably the greatest band EVAH! With very distinctive phases of sound experimentation, since the very moody and epic first album, the proto-thrash-metal of their 70s work and even the more popish and jazzy 80s. Songs i recommend: Larks Tongues in Aspic Part II, Fracture, 21st Century Schizoid Man and Starless

- Gentle Giant
The first and so far real bards of rock (Blind Guardian is just OK, but is far too overproduced to call my attention), Gentle Giant was the best live band of the 70s and still is one of the most technical groups around. Songs i recommend: In a Glass House, On Reflection and Knots

- Yes
I love Yes so much that i have a series of tattoos of the band, it's all awesome, all technical, all feeling, all cosmic and all lysergic. By far the greatest band to hear when you're high on LSD, Yes still is my personal favorite band of all time, and to someone as cocky as i am when it comes to music, that is saying a lot. Songs i recommend: Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, Awaken and Starship Trooper

- Bacamarte
A little of fan-service, Bacamarte is a brazilian band of the early 80s that released the greatest album of the genre (progressive rock) when the genre was already VERY dead. The lyrics are in portuguese, but it's so scarce that anyone can enjoy, even so, the lyrics are very D&Dish to make any sense. Songs i recommend: UFO, Smog Alado and Depois do Fim

BP, you can't imply that you're the only one who 'knows how to rock' and then not give mention to its founding fathers Black Sabbath and its pioneers Judas Priest.

That's like saying, "You can't appreciate everything there is to appreciate in New York without visiting the Statue of Liberty." That's typical tourist-play, my friend. Besides, I already gave proper acknowledgment to the TRUE founder of metal: Bach.

Also, I never said I was the only one who knows how to rock. There are many others around here who know how to rock. I merely help point stragglers in the right direction.

Here, watch the public service announcement I included in the following video (starts at ~1:01).

My friend just got me into Edenbridge recently. At first, I thought it was painfully generic female-fronted "symphonic" uhh metal. But the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate their musicianship. And, as far as symphonic goes, they certainly went the right direction in "Paramount" (second link)

Two-fer!

Gaelic Storm.  Usual set is fiddle, bagpipe, drums, guitar, vocals, but they're all very talented and do triple drum spreads while dipping into flute/harmonica/accordian instruments. I saw them live first, and honestly half+ of their studio music is overproduced and slow, but stuff like this is AWESOME.

And then as an extra bonus because I saw them in chicago they whipped out some of the girls from the local irish dance academy!  Pretty cool stuff too.

Edit:  Striking similar to ELO's Fire on High, if you're interested :)

A decent Gaelic Storm studio song:

Axis of Awesome - 4 Chord Song
.  The only thing you need to have a pop hit.  Especially when its in the chorus ~_~

Them singing it isn't the point of this video or song.
The point of it is someone else singing it, and actually making the song bearable.
The video is there because that is the real video. The person who made the song uses the real videos of the songs he remakes.
The video matching to the singing isn't relevant.

Hey Samurai, that As I lay Dying song is fairly tits.  Does the rest of there stuff sound quite a bit like Dethklok?  Because I can't seem to find any metal I like more than them, and they're cartoons.  Do you know of any other metal that has poppy melodies and guitar oriented solos.  It just seems like everything that's as heavy as them is just repetitive crunch.  Over the last couple years Dethklok has reawakened my love of metal, but no other band can sate me.  Care to recommend anything?

most of As I Lay Dying's stuff from the same CD as the one I posted sounds quite alike musically.

dunno what exactly what you mean by "poppy melodies" but as for guitar oriented solos I could give you some.

a few suggestions:
Ensiferum
In Flames (amazing guitar composition, their guitar players are amazing.)

if you like power/speed metal:
Blind Guardian (incredible guitar in their later stuff, but they've been around for 20 years so there's quite a bit of "later stuff")
Hammerfall
Iron Maiden

in general ask Bastard Poetry about heavier metal, I like power and speed metal for the most part.

I just found out about this recommendation website called tastekid.com.  I did a search on dethklok and I got several recommendations.  I haven't had a chance to go through them all yet but there is one that really stands out to me.  They are called Insomnium and their song Down with the Sun is pretty Klok-like.

Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K003TNG40P8&feature=player_embedded#!

How do I embed a video directly into the post?

@ Jack of All Trades, Insomnium is one of my favorite bands. I'm glad you discovered them!

I also HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Opeth, Martriden, Dark Tranquillity and.. well, before I go and list off every band that does quality, melodic* metal, just go back earlier in this thread to check out some of the links I've posted.

* "Poppy metal" is a rather cheesy way of describing what I call "melodic metal." I think that's more what you had in mind. Bands like Opeth have the brutality of death metal, but without the furious, seemingly mindless crunching of many death metal bands.

Thanks Bastard, I can't wait until this weekend when I can fill up my Android phone with all of this cool new metal.  I use the word poppy because it means more then just melodic.  To me it infers catchy pseudo-pop melody.  Pop is the worst adjective for a genre as it truly has no meaning.  "Musician's" (yes the quotations are intentional) like NSYNC, Brittany Spears, and just about anything dominating the pop charts, are all just super catchy (not for me mind you) inter genre'd songs.

To me Pop music is died in the 80's along with Pop Art.  When I think of Pop, I think of David Bowie.  I think of artfully catchy things.  Not to be confused with what's currently in the top 40.  So, no disrespect.  I really do need to get away from that word, because I can pretty much guarantee that its going to offend most Metal enthusiasts.

Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland 1945.  Though, really, the entire album with this song (In an Aeroplane Over the Sea) is simply fabulous.  The singer is a bit... discordant and melodic at the same time.  But on the second listen-through its strangely hyponotic and alluring.  Like, I've never gone from "omg what is this racket" to "mooooooar" more than I have with this band.  In fact, the album's a bit of a novelty in that it's all done in lo-fi on purpose.

And then Royksopp.  I still think their Melody AM album is their best work, but I've been giving their recent album Junior a spin.  It's pretty good... I could listen to Vision One on repeat for an entire day O.o

Streetlight Manifesto's new pet project:  99 Songs of Revolution

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_songs_of_revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99_songs_of_revolution)

They cover a lot of songs that inspired them... it's a pretty good music expansion experience if you're into that sort of thing.  As above vol 1 features a good spread of bad religion, paul simon, and postal service to name a few.

I'm currently too lazy to upload links to particular songs, but I will give you all a small view of my eclectic music tastes. I enjoy everything from metal/rock/underground rap/electronica/experimental/ so on and so forth.

My favorite song is by the band Ratatat, it is called 'Nostrand', I will link this song, despite me just typing that I wasn't. It is a song about birth, life, and death.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kVtGCACwpW8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kVtGCACwpW8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Other songs by these guys I would recommend would be: Seventeen Years, Loud Pipes, Kennedy, Drugs, Bob Ghandi, Wildcat

Someone mentioned Infected Mushroom earlier, I seen them a few months ago and came myself when they played Heavy Weight. Shakakaw is another favorite.

Blackalicious has smooth beats and original lyrics, it is rap how it should have been and not some mainstream thoughtless "music" like you hear spammed on the radio. Check out their songs Make You Feel That Way (Actually, that whole album is flawless, Blazing Arrow is the album name), The Craft, Making Progress, Side to Side.

On the note of underground, Deltron 3030 (you Gorillaz fans should be familiar with this guy, aka Del The Funky Homosapien) is almost as good. Listen to ' Virus' or 'Master Mind' for starters

I'm feeling really tired right about now, so let me cut to the chase

Castlevania SotN soundtrack
Daft Punk - Discovery & Human After All albums
Dayroom - Cheap Wine
Electric 6 - Synthesizer, Infected Girls, I Buy The Drugs, Improper Dancing
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (whole album)
Gorillaz - With the exception of all but three songs on their D-Sides album... everything!
Jet Set Radio (Future) - a good mix of a bit of everything
Jurassic 5
Marilyn Manson - Disposable Teens, The Dope Show, Redeemer
Matchbox 20 - Anything from 'yourself or someone like you'
Modest Mouse - Dashboard, Florida, Fire it Up
Muse - Take a Bow, Map of the Problematique, Supermassive Black Hole
The Pillows - FLCL soundtrack
Pixies - Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, No. 13 Baby
Sublime - Sublime album, Date Rape, 2 joints, Let's Get Stoned, 40 oz to Freedom, Badfish, Krs-One, Right Back (I'm seeing these guys this friday, I'm really stoked, even though it isn't even Bradley Nowell)
Tool - Lateralus (The Holy Gift order, completely changes the whole experience), H, Aenema, 46 and 2, Stinkfist, The Pot, Wings for Marie (pt1)
Ween - The Argus

goodnight guys, more to come later

I'm not going to lie to you, I've only listened to Lateralus, 10,000 days, Aenema, and a bit of Undertow.

In my opinion, there really isn't a bad Tool song (Though I can go without a few select portions of albums.

I just got my Sublime tickets an hour ago, I really can't wait to see them. I'm picking up some stuff which won the Cannabis Cup two years ago. Great times.

Pretty simple song, musically.  But a decent loveish ballad.

Also I'm a sucker for the following lines:

And I'd stand there
Like a soldier
With my foot upon his chest.
With my grin spread
And my arms out
In my bloodstained Sunday's best

Say Anything - I hate everyone
Catchy song about misanthropy.  Awesome last verse, too.

Cartel - Wasted
Again, incredibly catchy and yet depressing.

Opus III - It's a Fine Day
Obscure dance hit from the early 90s.  Kinda pulls at the nostalgia strings though I haven't heard of it until very recently.  Earworm from hell :)

moar!

Pendulum has recently invaded my active tracks.  It's mostly drum and bass stuff, but their most recent album features several guest vocalists - heck, just more vocals in general - and took on a heavier, if possibly overproduced, sound.  It's akin to Infected Mushroom's Vicious Delicious.  Either way, I swear this stuff has binaural beats embedded in it somehow because this stuff is like crack.  Crank it up to 1080p!

buuuuuuuump!

Ministry of Sound Mashup: Breakage - Fighting Fire vs. Twin Atlantic - What is Light? Where is Laughter?
Individually these songs are decent in their own respect... Fighting Fire is a decent trance diddy and Twin Atlantic is pop-rock with a scottish singer.  But combined?  Oh, lawd, the synergy, the magic... /drool

Other tracks that I've been listening to far too much of recently:

Iron Horse - Hero of the Day (bluegrass Metallica cover)

Justice - Waters of Nazereth -- French House music.  Think Daft Punk only a little harder/rougher.

Dispatch - Walk with You.  Awesome acoustic piece.  First two minutes is filler flute/piccolo/something.  I'm just a sucker for vocal harmony :3

If I could only take one album with me for the rest of time it would be Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins.  The second in a run of three brilliant albums, this is the band at their absolute peak.  Some argue that it contains too much filler and would be better served being cut down to a single disc, but I wholeheartedly disagree.  The sheer size and sonic variety are part of the albums' charm.  From delicate ballads to punishing rawk, from sparse whispers to sweeping symphonic epics, this has a bit of everything, and discarding half of it would be unfathomable.  The production is top notch - you can tell a lot of care and effort went into crafting it, and the ambition really shines through.  The band set out to make one of the most epic records of all time, and at least in the context of modern rock I believe they succeeded.  I can't think of many other albums in the last 15 years that felt so grandiose and monumental.

Most important though is the way Mellon Collie makes me feel.  Listening to this album instantly reminds me of when I was 17 or 18 and all the feelings that go along with it - how everything mattered so intensely and so passionately, and how what now seem like the simplest little things could feel so massively important.  Stirring up those raw emotions is frequently inspiring for me, and it motivates me to work on my own projects (whatever they may be at the time), rekindling a desire to create something grand and epic myself.

Listening to Mellon Collie's two discs is like taking a journey through your youth; the highs, the lows, the angst, the passions, the ambition...it's nostalgic and revitalizing at the same time.  The journey is never boring, and by the time the final song fades out I'm almost sad that it's ended.

My favorite parts of the record:

The beautiful piano opener and closing coda which form a brilliant bookend to the album.
The transition from the opening title track to the sweeping strings of "Tonight, Tongiht."
The manic buildup and release at the end of "Tonight, Tonight."
The guitar and drum climax in "Jellybelly."
The beautiful arpeggios in "Galapogos," as well as the buildup to the final chorus.
The dreamy fade in to "Porcelina," coupled with the crunching guitar.  A 9 minute song that's not boring for a second.
The punishing fury of "Bodies"
The spacey acoustic coda of "Ruby," reprising the title track
The calm before the storm of "Stumbleine," such a sparse acoustic whisper
The watery guitar fade in of "By Starlight"
The full-band harmonizing during the bridge of "Farewell and Goodnight."

There are more, of course, but those are the absolute highlights for me.  I know Corgan's voice really bothers some people to the point of not being able to enjoy the band, but I like that he can effectively vocalize the emotion behind the songs.

This is my favorite record of all time.  And if you love the album as much as I do, be sure to check out the B-side boxset The Aeroplane Flies High.  Over 50 songs were written for Mellon Collie, and only 28 made the record.  There's plenty of gems that didn't make the cut.  Too much filler?  Should have been cut to a singe disc?  After listening to the Aeroplane set, I think they could have made it three discs without dropping the quality.  Aeroplane standouts that could justify a 3rd disc:

The Aeroplane Flies High
Marquis in Spades
Mouths of Babes
Ugly
Set the Ray to Jerry
Cherry
Medellia of the Gray Skies
Jupiter's Lament
Tonite Reprise
...Said Sadly
The Boy
Pennies
Rotten Apples
The Last Song (really love this one)

It's really amazing to me just how many great songs this band churned out during this period

Chad
