Title: Cleaning Time
Post by: 3lric on September 16, 2012, 11:28:35 pm
So today, RavenOfRazgriz and myself spent quite a bit of time cleaning up both New Project Ideas & Progressing patches.
We both have decided to take over the moderation of these sections since it appears Dominic no longer has the time to do so.

We have also removed many many of the stickies in every section as so many of them are outdated.

Another thing we intend to fix up is the Home Page in the near future. I don't like the thought of newbies coming in
and getting the wrong info right off that bat, such as I did when i joined.

If anyone has a problem with something that was moved let me know and I will get it moved back, otherwise everything
(that wasn't completely worthless) has been put into the Old Project Ideas section of Archives.

All of this is for the better of the site, we are moving forward with new tools and patches all the time and its time to start
making the site reflect all of this.

KNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL.

In unrelated news, I'll be doing further cleanup with various sections such as Tutorials and Tools and brushing up rules, stickies, and clarifications for New Project Ideas in the next day or two.

My 2 cents:
Having 2 sections ("New Project Ideas" & "Progressing Patches") is a little (Actually, a lot, IMHO) confusing
My suggestion is to merge them into 1 section called "New Projects" or "Work in Progress" and to create a topic inside it (Sticked) called "Random Ideas"
In this way, the patches that are being worked on keep their topic(s) in the section, the ideas are merged into the "Random Ideas" topic

That's how it used to be, Dome.  It was a confusing hellhole mess where the patches that were getting worked on constantly got buried by people ignoring the Ideas sticky and making random "Let's make Halo FFT, that'd be awesome!" type threads.  Right now the work on the New Project Ideas section (and a few others such as Tools and Tutorials) is only half-finished.

Today was mostly pruning old topics, unpinning irrelevant Sticky threads, and other kinds of cleanup focused on simply making those sections easier to navigate.  Tomorrow will be new Sticky threads, fine-pruning, and other kinds of detail and refocusing work to get things back in shape.  New Project Ideas will be getting a new Rules thread (notice the old one is now gone), some better clarification and posting guidelines, and some other stuff it was missing to whip it back up into shape.  Progressing Patches got this clarification a while back when Elric made a new Rules Sticky for it, and we went through it and Archived a lot of very old threads and threads that didn't fit the criteria of a Progressing Patch that had somehow gotten in there for some reason, so you can consider this really the extension of what Elric started back then.

Easily solvable: The work of a mod is to keep the section clear
Anyway, as long as the stickies are clearly written and updated, I'm fine with the changes

A big thanks from my end for this much needed cleaning up. A lot of work has been done up to now, and they keep at it. Good job guys!

Okay kids.

New Project Ideas (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=42.0), Tutorials and Learning (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=43.0), and Hacking/Patching Tools (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=3.0) are all more or less ready to go.  Peruse and post any issues, etc. that are noticed in the relevant threads.  I hit a small snag with finishing up Final Fantasy Tactics Hacking but it'll be done by tonight.  For those wondering where many of the old threads from New Project Ideas and Progressing Patches went, check out the Old Project Ideas (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=65.0) Archive.  Spriting (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?board=13.0) also saw some minor spring cleaning last night with a few useless stickies being un-stickied, but that's it so far.

There's still some more to be done, but a lot of the most glaringly unkempt sections are now a lot more well-handled and no longer giant walls of stickied threads.  If there's anything else (forum-wise, we've not hit the main site yet) that still needs sprucing up, now's a good time to let us know.

Well, I've updated the Important Links (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=9210.0) in Final Fantasy Tactics Hacking with many newer, missing links, removed some duped or otherwise redundant ones, and organized them a bit better.  I've also been slowly sorting through Final Fantasy Tactics Hacking and Hacking/Patching Tools to find things like stray Tutorials for the Tutorial Index (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=9204.0), and prune out threads that contain misinformation or simply have no replies to make the threads that are valuable that much easier to find.

Thus, it's time to ask about two things:

1. If I can get a bit of help, I'd like to find any stray Tutorials lying around so I can move them to the Tutorial Index (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=9204.0) and move the respective threads to the Tutorials section.  If this Index is missing any Tutorials you know of that aren't in the Tutorials section (or if there are Tutorials in general you don't think are needed in the Index but are just lying around), please post links to them either here or in the Index thread and I'll get them sorted.

2. Elric and I will soon starting on updating the main page of FFH to better reflect the progress we've been making as a site and generally be more up-to-date and easy to use.  This is something honestly even he and I haven't spent much time talking to each other on, but if there's anything on the main site you feel needs updating, removing, or editing, now is a good time to let us know.  While we've both already got ideas on how to organize things, better and early feedback on any thoughts or concerns will help us ensure things get done right the first time, which makes everyone's job a lot easier.

That's about it.  If there's anything else that needs cleaning up (sections, threads, etc.), now is also a good time to let us know.

All this feedback, I don't ever know what I'll do with it all.

Anyway, started on the main site a bit today, with a much needed update to the Downloads -> Patches (http://ffhacktics.com/patches.php) section of the site.  Downloads -> Tools will come later today.

Question: Is Mercenaries really "On Hold"? I mean, is LD or someone else planning to resume work on the patch?

We've talked about rebooting it, and he's expressed interest, but nothing's really come of it yet aside from some brief discussions.

That would definitely be awesome
Let's hope for the best :-)

That's what I kept hearing.  I figured I'd leave it there a while longer to see if anything actually gets done with starting it back up again.  Everything else I removed was very clearly dead and not coming back, though, and now that I know how to work that part of the front page adding/removing/updating entries is easy.
