i would say that he was an assainan (cant spell) and they through the body in the water so it floated away and there was no evidence of gospel surviving
I'll agree with assassin or someone who attempted to take his life. I think the reason would be closer to delaying the time until the body is found in order to try and buy some time.

This could be a plot twist where the people with the Lancer were really saving his live. Perhaps there were pursuers not far behind the other two; they knocked him out and let him get swept up so he could live to reveal some sort of scheme. O.o
Of course he very well could have been an assassin... perhaps he failed to do something or tried to get out of the faction he was part of, so they disposed of him.
he was the lancer that was in the battle previous to the cutscene.
maybe the lancer knows to much, maybe he was sent by someone else, but here's something i wanna know, who's the cool looking green knight supose to be, he seems important to me for some reason, not my boy Zozma but the other guy...
