Title: The Monster Hunter Guild -- Goblin Invaders from Araguay
Post by: Dokurider on July 21, 2012, 03:08:29 pm
The city of Dorter was about to begin its first day of spring doing what Dorter does best, trading. Fish was fresh and supple, fruit and vegetable colored the stalls, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafted throughout the market. The Farmer and Baker markets once again this year command the eyes of the customers now trickling into the streets. They also command the eye of a force more sinister than mere thieves.

In the woods surrounding Dorter, a horde of goblins plan the first raid of the spring. It has been a long and cold winter and their foodstuffs have been depleted; they all look forward to breaking their winter fast. Camouflaged in leaves and brush, they use telescopes swiped from humans in previous raids to spy upon a blissfully unaware public. The younger goblins are impatient and are asking the older goblins to start the raid immediately. They are particularly enthusiastic to begin so they can try out the new weapons they've been training with all winter.

They received them at the tail end of last fall when goblin traders, both coming from foreign tribes around Ivalice and their own returning from trading with other tribes throughout the land. It was a miracle so many came. Usually, only 2 or 3 make it from Mandalia, occasionally, a foreigner from Germinas Peak, or Barius Valley comes, and rarely do the ones they send out make it back.

Yes, this year, never has a tribe of goblins been this well armed before. Despite their arsenal, the older goblins tell the younger ones to stay put. They have seen many raids before, and the most productive raids happen just before the most humans are out. They sit and watch silently as the shadows shorten and the bustle of the human city increases.

The market was now packed with humans, cavorting and carrying on in their nasally and squeaky gibberish. How do they carry those freakishly large heads on those glass necks of theirs? Or walk on those twiggy legs all day? Humans crush and break like dead trees. The goblins gathered their weapons and armor, and gave them a final look over. Then, a select few armed with spears jumped up on their chocobos and on the elder's signal, charged the market.

The food stalls mostly lay deeper in the market area, mostly to delay the yearly goblin raids and to minimize the damage they do. In order to get to them, the goblins have to charge through the rest of the marketplace. It was a minor inconvenient at best. As they charged the stalls, they let out their goblin war cry, banging on their shields, and swinging their spears wildly to send the panicking humans fleeing, making their way to the food markets, occasionally cutting down one of the slower or unlucky humans to complete their threat.

The guards that were present didn't dare strike at the raiders, opting instead to evacuate everyone out of the area until reinforcements arrived. Try as they might, the guards could not prevent the streets from being congested with the crowd, slowing down the evacuation and more importantly, preventing the Dorter Guard from getting to the goblins.

Despite the bulk of the city guard were trapped behind panicking citizens, it did not stop the more agile members of the guard, bounding from rooftop to rooftop over the crowd, while the archers scrambled to their crow's nests, and searched the city below them for the goblin intruders. Spotting them, they took up their Ice bows and fired at will at the goblins coming in after the mounted goblins.

The goblins, anticipating the barrage of icy arrows, raise their shields to cover them from the blizzard arrow storm. The arrows make a deep plunk as they hit the crudely made wooden shields. Only a few arrows manage to slip through and bury themselves into some of the raiders' flesh. Despite their thick hide stopping the arrow itself from dealing serious damage to their muscles, the unforgiving cold rapidly drained their life force.

The older goblins knew they had to get to cover and quickly before the archers picked them off. They led the horde to the shadows of the various buildings that populated the city sector and between and into the tight and complex walkways of the stalls. With the threat of icy arrows reduced, they can now get to pillage the food stalls. They pulled out their bags and started stuffing everything they could get their hands on, taking turns to watch the skies and streets for threats. And then, here came the first wave of guards, jumping off the buildings and throwing an icy barrage of knives, was the Dorter's Rooftop Patrol.

The pillagers blocked most of the volley and proceeded to ready their own projectiles, rocks half the size of a human head. They put them into their rough looking slings and flung them at the guards with wall cratering force. This was not a new tactics to the guards as deftly dodged and deflected them with their capes, moving in to cut these beasts to ribbons with their short blades and knives. However, they did not expect one of the goblins to be pulling out a crossbow and shoot them. It caught one of the rooftop guards below the collarbone, the force of the bolt blasted him against the wall he just jumped down from.

Despite the surprise of such advanced technology from the goblins, they bravely closed the gap and clashed with the raiders, slashing and weaving through their shields. Even with a combination of arrow fire and guards remaining on the rooftops to harass the plunderers with more freezing projectiles, they easily withstood and repelled the attacks. Patrol opted to play defensive until the main bulk of the guard arrives, aiming to distract and hold their attention, their knives and short blades only leaving light scratches against their tough skin. As they dodged and weaved though their attacks, they noticed that the crossbow wasn't their only un-goblinlike technology.

They wielded metal swords, axes and spears, crafted with a finesse no goblin was ever capable of. A few even had full metal armor and shields. It was a stark contrast with the crude and crooked weapons the goblins traditional made: wooden clubs, some with bits of sharp flint and rarely, obsidian hammered into them; misshapen spears not out of place from the Stone Age; slings fashioned out of grass or wool; and the occasional stone sword and axehead. There was no mistake to be made here; these new weapons of theirs were made by man.

And they used them quite well; their efficient cutting edges combined with the goblin's monstrous strength, devastated any human it made contact with. The elder raiders instinctively knew it was time to make their escape. There was no way they could take on what was coming for them. They did not fear the burly knights wielding icy swords or the flying leaps of the dragoons, no, they feared the wiry people cloaked in darkness and pointy hats. And there, in the very distance, they were, coming up from behind their armored brethren.

The goblins immediately retreated upon seeing the main force coming up to them, taking their ill gotten gain and handing them to their mounted goblins. They couldn't have retreated at a sooner time, then did the Geomancers and other light units seemingly came out of thin air; the humans had almost surrounded them. As they made a beeline towards the safety of the forest, the Geomancers barraged them with stone and dirt bursting out of the ground.

The pillagers dared not stop, as mounted wizards and knights were gaining on them rapidly. The goblins were starting to drop. Arrows impaling them, an ice dart too many, the earth consuming them in stone or dazing them, sending them reeling into the pursuing forces, who skewered the unfortunate creatures with a vengeance. As they neared the edge of the wood, the head of the mounted force had caught up with them.

At the very tip of the force was the captain of the guard, readying his Ice Brand to launch a holy smiting on these disgusting little monsters and behind him and other knights, were the wizards they feared so much, now in range to channel a powered Blizzara. The captain swung down his sword and an aura of absolute power roared straight ahead of him. Each goblin it hit, a phantasmal pillar of cold exploded to the heavens, and a pathetic cry of a goblin followed all but the last one, a particularly tough goblin, barely managing to stay on his feet. Then, the wizard raised his cold rod to the sky and immediately an avalanche of ice smashed down on a unlucky few, ice exploding from their bodies, ripping and freezing their little bodies to bloody pieces. A well charged shot of one of the archers pierced one of the goblin's ribcage, traveling through its core, just barely sticking out of the other side. It sent him hurdling to the ground like a rag doll.

In spite of the series of terrific attacks, the goblins finally made it to the safety of their wood, the guard stopping just before the forest began. The guard had no problem letting them go as their hasty retreat meant they could not cover their little tracks this time and they would led a trail directly to their tribe. After a few moments more to make sure they really left, they let out a collective sigh of relief.

The captain dismounted his chocobo and walked up to one of the dying goblins, its life force ebbing away all over the ground and through the giant ice shard sticking out of him. He adjusted his glasses, picked up its metal sword and inspected it. It was a sword for a goblin, but a short blade for a human. Its fine grain edge and while it looked plain and basic by human standards, its consistent shape was downright elegant compared to the twisted and crude shapes of goblin clubs and swords. This was indeed forged with human precision. "It looks like, the Goblins have gone from the Ice Age," adjusting his glasses again, "to the Iron Age." he uttered.

"I see that everyone is here. Then I shall start." A educated looking archer addressed his men in a fairly low profile restaurant in downtown Dorter. They all sat around a plain wooden square long table, suitable for small meetings like this. It was after the lunch rush, so things were quiet.

"As you may already know, we have a particularly ugly scourge of Goblin this year. The local goblin tribe in Araguay Woods have been showing up with technology crafted beyond their means. Plate armor, metal swords..."

He pulls out a unusually small bolt, holding it up to emphasis his next point. "Crossbows. This came out of one of the city guards that fought the goblin party that attacked the market stalls two days ago."

He hands it to his subordinates to pass around. "The implications of advanced weapons in goblins hands are serious. We need to cull this threat before word gets out throughout the goblins around Ivalice and they begin flocking to Araguay. Once that happens and summer arrives, they'll form a relentless supertribe and ravage the countryside. No city will be safe." He takes back the tiny crossbow bolt.

"Our mission is to go into Araguay Woods and find the source of their new weaponry. Last year, several local blacksmiths and their families disappeared. Most likely, the goblins are forcing them into making weapons. It's not the first time this has happened, but what was unusual was how well it was covered up. They kidnapped other unrelated families to throw off suspicion. Keep that in mind when we head out to the woods; do not underestimate the intelligence of these creatures."

"Extracting hostages is not new work for us. Goblins kidnap all the time. However, a successful rescue requires the utmost care. In addition to their advanced weapons, they also carry goblin weapons from all around Ivalice, not just the slings, shields and herb use we're used to. The initial skirmishes we've had with the beasts have placed them using throwing spears, shard bats, bolas, boomerangs, mounted chocobos, even other monsters they've captured. We must tread quietly and strike decisively." He is finished with his briefing.

"Now with that out of the way, we may now order lunch. We each have a 25 gil stipend to use as you please. I hear the cheddar potato soup is quite good here. But don't overeat or start getting drunk, because after we're done, we are headed straight out to Araguay after a equipment check. Anyways, just come over here and sign this here slip and I'll give you your money."

As he hands out the stipends, he continues." After we make our orders, why don't we introduce ourselves? Tell us a little bit about yourselves." He turns to one of the waiters cleaning tables to look busy and motions for one of them to come take their orders.

Some sample meals, there is obviously more. Use your imagination. This isn't a fancy restaurant, so don't order anything too fancy.
Potato Cheese Soup...8 gil
Grilled Chicken Strips...15 gil
Potato Wedges...7 gil
Mashed Potatoes...7 gil
Beef Gravy...3 gil
Beer...3 gil
Juice...3 gil

Having already eaten prior to coming here, St. Ajora bless my Grandmother's tendency to make well sure everyone is well fed or stuffed, before she brings out seconds... I took hold to my staff and sighed. Although, her tendency to over fill past my stomach capacity has brought my poor stomach to learn to eat more and more... Ah well, its not like I didn't already eat to much in the first place, she just encouraged me and I of course excepted... But if gluttony is the only sin I ever commit in my life, then may St. Ajora guide me to the happy end, to after life.

Looking up, I found the captain looking at me, with the paper in hand. I excepted the paper from him and casually as I could signed it. Although I do believe despite me effort to hide the fact I was nervous, I'm sure it was shown through my hand writing. I signed my name, Evaline Valour. Oh, Valour. I have always seen that name to be so unfitting for one as myself. I am constantly hiding behind others, no wonder I choose the lowly life as a follower under St. Ajora, destined to hide behind others, and support them. Don't get me wrong I love the teachings taught to us by the Priests in the church, and devote my life to the rules and followings of St. Ajora. But I am no where near as courageous as my name states I am. Nonetheless I except it for what it is, a name. Passing the slip of paper back to the captain, he in turn handed me a back of gil. Why would I have use for this? Ah well. I can save it for later, maybe get me a few apples...

The archer's eyebrows leaped up, remembering they had a special guest coming along. "Oh, I almost forgot. We have a special guest coming along. Can you introduce yourself?"

"Most certainly. I'm Earl Codwell of the Ivalician Nature Society. We're interested in all aspects of the nature of Ivalice, but monsters take an especial fascination. This is a rare chance to see what goblins do when they have access to advanced technology. What do they make? How deep is their understanding of said technology? How do they adapt it into their lives and culture? Of course, I don't make light of the lives that hang in the balance here."

"You don't have to worry about me being dead weight though. I was a Chemist for a number of years in the Zeltennia Regiment. I also dabbled a bit in White Magic and picked up a few spells here and there. I'm also a decent shot with my trusty Romanda gun. It's not much to look at, but you never know when you need a weakened foe picked off."

Earl turned to the waiter. "That Cheddar Potato soup sounds like a delightful idea. I'll have it and some beer bread and coffee to go with it."

"So there you have it.", the head of the group stated. "For all intents and purposes, treat him as one of the Monster Hunter Guild." He looked across the group in anticipation for another introduction.

Looking up, I faced where I had heard the words "White Magic". I must admit even though I do hold a slight shame to being in the back of the conflict at hand, I have always held a liking to this White Magic. It has made me feel good these past years, it has helped me find that I am not a useless person, but in fact I wield a mighty power, besides the teachings of St. Ajora of course. I listened intently to what this person was saying now. "Here and there"? I'm interested to see what he means by such... Can you truthfully learn magic "Here and there"? I learned all I know from priests, that is white magic wise.

        "So there you have it."

Oh the Captain is talking again, I should start paying attention.

"For all intents and purposes, treat him as one of the Monster Hunter Guild." Ending his sentence, the Captain  looked around at the others in search for more introductions. I then realized how rude I was being then. I signed the paper and I didn't ever mention my name... This must be fixed right away!

I stood up quickly, I felt the table shake from my abrupt movement. Holding my staff with both hands tightly, I spoke quickly.

"Valour, Evaline Valour. Daughter to Falir Valour, a master of Time Magic. I specialize in White Magic and naturally I took on some of my Father's magic. I have only the most basics of Time magic though, so don't rely on it!"

I took a bow, moving the table even more. I was so embarrassed, I didn't even dare look into my water glass, or my neighbours beer to see how red I was. Why did I do such an embarrassing thing. I took in a deep breath and held it awaiting for the abrasive and lecturing words from the others.

Noremu looks up, clearly engaged in some sort of arcane spellbook. As the waiter takes his order, he decides upon the Grilled Chicken Strips.

"Introductions, eh? Well, I'm Noremu. Nice to meet you guys. Well, I suppose I might as well tell you right away; my specialty is summoning." Noticing a few raised eyebrows, Noremu simply chuckles. "Yes. I made a pact long ago to bind my soul to these magnificent creatures, and I've never looked back. This here is one of these creatures." A small, bird-like creature materializes on his shoulder. "While this isn't one of the more powerful creatures I can summon, this one seems to like me."

As the food arrives, Noremu continues.

"But anyways, back to business. So these goblins... where exactly did they get all of this gear? Do we know? The volume of goods produced must mean that there is more involved here than a few simple blacksmith. They will be incredibly difficult to combat in the future if we cannot divine their source. But alas, I leave that to you. I'm here to take orders and kill monsters, not to theorize."

Noremu quiets down and waits for the others to speak.

"Hey, I'll have some turkey breasts over here and some corn on the cob. Oh, and a pint of Mac Lager." That last item got the Archer's attention. "What? I'm not getting smashed or anything. I just need a good buzz before I go out there in that goblin-infested crap hole."

The overly comfortable geomancer slumped back against his seat let out a giant audible sigh of relaxation. "Ah, I guess it's my turn now. Name's Keith. I'm your geomancer. Now before any of start rollin' your eyes, imma stop you right there. I don't give two shits about savin' the trees or huggin' some cuddly scorpions or whatever. My opinion on this, particular subject is that I don't have one and don't care to form one. Just know the last thing on my mind is nature and it's, preservation." He stretched his arms over his head, showing the entire world his armpit hair.

"Anywho, I'm also your resident thief. I'm all up for relieving them squats of their weapons and shit. I also disarm those goblin traps they like to set everywhere. I used to help my dad find them all over the forest and in our logging camp so none of our guys would trip over 'em. Yeah, I come from a whole family of loggers, proud of it too. They were some of the toughest guys and gals you ever seen. Had to be, livin' right alongside those Taijus and spooks and rogue Red Chocobos. Man, those Finath Red Chocobos are hell in a handbasket. Those fucking meteors of theirs just ghost right though your shields and shit. One of them isn't so bad, but when they start swarming, man, they are going to raise them some hell." Now he's tipping his chair on it's back legs and rocking back and forth.

"Then I joined the army when I was 16. Served a couple of tours. Now that I'm in reserve, I decided to take up monster huntin' and now here I am before your very eyes. What else can I say? You're in good hands." Now served his turkey, corn and pint, he immediately dug in without further ado.

Elbow on the table, head in hand, Quint heard the others make their introductions, but he wasn't really listening. Instead, the call out for a lager was met his other arm raising up to gain the waiter's attention. "Same here, a lager, and keep 'em comin'." Placing his money on the table, he quickly went into his own greeting. Though his physique wasn't large, the muscles he did have were tight. A brown shirt clung to his shoulders, embossed with the wanted posters of a few of the region's more notorious monsters like the deadly Malboro gang and the stoner Cocatoris family. Below that a pair of roomy black pants, allowing the mobility he needed both on offense and defense. Rounding out the ensamble but hidden from the other member's view was a pair of custom brown shoes, given to him by a grateful cordwainer after Quint ran off a small contingent of Flotiballs that rather liked leather.

Rising to his feet, Quint would clear his throat and speak not unlike a teacher with a new set of students. "Quint here, your resident brawler. Simply put, I'm here to put dents in monsters' chests." His arms then outstretched forward, showing the group the myriad of discolored patches from old bruises and a couple of darkened cuts over his hands and wrist. "You guys just stick to the back and we'll do fine." Though he didn't speak directly to them, that statement was obviously for the less vigorous members in the party. "Especially since...Ah, speak of the devil.."

Before long the drinks that had been ordered were served out, Quint taking his mug and gulping down a couple big swills. "...Since once I get my 'victory juice' in me, whatever's in front get beaten down." Though he put up a tough demeanor, Quint was pretty nervous about the mission itself, the drinking more to calm his nerves than ramp up his ire. Never before had he seen goblins with weapons of this quality, and if the goblins had anything special the guards hadn't seen, they could be in for trouble.

The archer, after receiving his order of Potato Cheese Soup and Grilled Chicken, sees fit to introduce himself last. "I am Nicholas Atkins, your superior for this mission. I used to be a Knight for a number of years, but I recently made the change over to Archer. And before you worry, I'm a fine shot for an archer. I'll mainly be breaking those goblin weapons and armor from afar, and keeping an eye out for ambushes."

Nicholas, in a show of his good manners, placed a napkin in his lap while he finished talking. "Now that everyone has introduced themselves, let's bow our heads and pray for victory, shall we?" Putting his hand together and closing his eyes, he begun his prayer.

"St. Ajora, the One of holy blood, please find it your infinite wisdom to deliver onto us a swift victory. Please find it in your infinite kindness to protect us all from harm. Please find it in your infinite love to let us all return home. Bless this food we eat today, bless upon you, our great Savior, bless your chosen ones, and bless our futures. Please find it in your Divine plan to deliver us from the evils that ravage our world and sin within us all. God have mercy on us all. Amen."

A prayer? Perfect, this is exactly what I needed! I'm awfully nervous of my first mission. With St. Ajora's help I'll certainly pass through this difficult journey. I smiled. I really like this knight person, I look forward to doing this mission with him. Clasping my hands to together and leaning forward I joined in the Knights prayer for our successful mission.

        "Ahem"

Noremu chuckles under his breath at the mention of a prayer. 'Great,' he thought, 'another religious man.' Though not a religious himself, Noremu joins in for the sake of the team's unity. In truth, he did not believe in any religion; he felt it was pointless to worship a higher power when 'higher powers' could be summoned on a simple whim. Though he knew the stories about Ajora, he never had cared for any anyways.

"Saint Ajora, one of holy blood, please..."

For a moment, Quint would close his eyes, respectful to the prayer. But soon, after peeking to notice most of the others had closed their eyes, his opened, grabbing another quiet gulp of his beer. For most of the prayer, Quint kind of rolled his eyes, but perked up towards the end.

Quote from: Nicholas Atkins"God have mercy on us all."

"Mercy?" Quint hated that word. "We can give mercy. St. Ajora can give mercy. But THIS?!" Quint pointed at, then picked up the sharp bolt, prodding at its tip with a finger, "This won't give us mercy. THEY won't give us mercy, so I suggest you all keep your head on straight so you're not begging for a mercy these goblins don't have."

"Goblins have no mercy for drunkards either." Nicholas retorted. "This is your last drink. I will not have you or anyone else getting killed because you couldn't see straight." He wanted to say more, but instead opted to straighten himself out and change the subject.

"So, are there any other questions?" The Summoner looked up and let his question be known.

"...not to theorize." Noremu finished asking his question. "Well," the former Knight replied. It wasn't one for him to pass things off to others and he could explain things perfectly fine, but seeing Earl eagerness to explain across the table, he decided to turn things over to the team naturalist. "...I think Earl could better explain things." And the attention of the conversation switched over to the Chemist.

"Well, Noremu," Earl said with a stilted affect, attempting to remember his name, "First off, not all of them are actually armed with the human made technology. Only a select few get to use what has been made so far but they have proven to be extremely dangerous. We can't forget about existing goblin weapons either. The fact they managed to learn how to build weapons from all around Ivalice means they are no longer bound to any one strategy like in the past, yet another stumbling block against us. It's interesting really that the campaign against goblins isn't about just wiping them out, it's also about destroying information. It's about containing the spread of knowledge to its respective region at the very least. It's a war against education and learning itself. We're preventing the Goblin Renaissance. As much as I would like to see how goblin society would develop unimpeded, I think everyone would agree that humans cannot afford to enter an arms race with the goblins."

Realizing he just went too long, he awkwardly rounds his way back to the original point. "Uh, I hope that answers your question, Noremu." Earl lightheartedly tacks on to the end of his lecture.

"That was a wonderful dissertation." Nicholas politely covered for Earl's impromptu lecture. "In any case, I see that we are all done eating. If there are no more questions, then let's waste no more time. You have an hour to perform a final equipment check before meeting me at the edge of Araguay. If you don't have what you need, head back to the guild and see what you get. The meeting spot should be easy enough to find. Just follow the main road out of Dorter until you hit the outpost. Once we have all gathered, our mission will commence." He paused momentarily to look his men over. "That is all except be ready to fight some goblins. Dismissed." With that, he left payment for the lunch on the table and left.

The edge of Araguay buzzed with activity. Dorter Guard and volunteers had hastily set up a temporary post to intercept Goblin raiders. The archer towers spaced before the woods had no ceremony about them but were reasonable sturdy enough. Patrols marched to and fro, and watchful dogs and chocobo steeds colored the population. Nicholas arrived early, fully geared, standing to the side of the road. While he was waiting, he observed the guards for a while. They seemed unconcerned about the threat of goblins, talking and complaining amongst themselves at ease.

After a short bout of waiting, Nicholas' party trickled in. When they had all arrived, he began to brief them again. "Alright, so we are all finally here. Now before we begin, I want to introduce a last minute addition to the party. I'll let him introduce himself to us."

From the trunk behind Nicholas, the new member emerged and showed himself to the team. After a quick look at everyone, he said, "Sup everyone? The name's James, you can call me Jim. It's simpler that way."
"I'll be your ninja. You can use me for reconnaissance or advance guard duties."

"Sorry I couldn't attend to the gathering, I needed to buy a new set of ninja knives because my old ones were used up. Also had to buy some throwables for our upcoming battles." "I'm okay on the battlefield, but there are some things that bother me: First of all, I'm way too light on my feet. That's why I need someone with healing abilities to watch over me while I battle. Secondly, Yes, I am quick and accurate, but I'm not that powerful in damaging. So you can't ask me to knife this and knife that and do it successfully. And lastly... I'm hungry. Did you guys already grab a bite before heading here?"

He hears no reply from them.

"Okay". "I guess I'm done here." He looks at Nicholas. "Thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself sir." Jim nods at him and goes near the entire team. When he looked at who was beside him, he said, "Oh sweet! A healer!" It was the priest. He didn't elaborate why he made such a remark. Maybe because he's found someone who could protect him in battle.

I was surprised yet happy to hear his remark. Yes, Indeed a healer. I feel so glad someone is looking forward to having me by their side helping them in the fight. Turning and smiling to the ninja, James I greeted him back.

"Yes, hello. My name is Evaline Valour, nice to meet you."

        Help?

"Yes! I would love to!" I exclaimed in glee. I started with the archer. Pointing at him I introduced him.

"That archer was previously a knight. His name is Nicholas Atkins." I then shifted to face the monk.

"Quint. He's a monk. And to his left there is Noremu, the Summoner. Behind them is Earl our chemist, the alternative for your healing needs." I paused for a moment to glance at James to see if he was getting all the info I was sending to him. Deciding he was, I quickly continued. "Keith the geomancer. And... Oh that's everyone." I turned back to face him with my usual smile.

"Ooh, what a well rounded team. Cool stuff."

Then Jim exclaimed, "How did I even forget to ask the name of our leader? I'm so dumb." He scratched his head. After a moment of awkward silence, he said "Ahem, anyways, thanks for naming them for me. At least now I know who's who when we're finally in battle. It was nice talking to you, Miss Valour." He gave a short smile and focused attention on Nicholas now. To see if he was about to start briefing...

"Hello Jim," Normeu says, but makes no move to shake his hand. "So you're trained in the Eastern Ways, eh? I hope you're as stealthy as we hope you are. Although then again, goblins couldn't hear an army marching toward them if they we looking straight at them." Noremu grins slightly. "Anyways, welcome to the team. We seem to be quite rounded. Nicholas did his homework to find all of us, it seems."

"Oh, hey there," Jim replied. "A Summoner huh? I hope you have a way of filling that mana up." He spoke with concern. Then out of the blue... He asked, "Do you know Moogle? You gotta have one! If you have it then yes! Another healing ability! Ramuh is awesome too, love his ability!" Even with all the excitement pouring out from the ninja, it all stopped when he saw something near Noremu. He grabbed his ninja knife, moved a bit backward and shouted, "Whoa, whoa, whoa! What is that floating thing near you!?"

"Oh, this?" Noremu asks as the bird-creature lands on his shoulder. "This is my familiar. He has no name; rather, he is more of a part of me. When I performed the summoning pact, he was the first creature that came to me. He seems to be quite fond of me, so he stays around." The falcon-like creature eyes Jim, lightly clicking its talons on the floor.

"As for other creatures I can summon..." Noremu smiles, and slowly gains an aura around him as he begins to concentrate. A steady gust of wind comes from below him, and a large glyph appears on the ground with himself at the center. Several green orbs rise from the ground and begin to swirl around him. A large, ghostly creature rises from the glyph. As it steps outside of the ring of orbs, it gradually materializes. The group takes a step back, likely due to the sheer size of the creature.

"This is Ramuh, being of Thunder and Lightning." Ramuh roars, creating concern amongst those watching (which is almost everyone at this point). "Moogle is simpler to summon, while others are harder." With a brief flick of his hand and a shower of sparkles, a moogle appears to the side.

"Like them?"

Jim removed the grip on his weapon, returning to normal stance and said, "Wow, never seen one so up close. Truly they are awesome!" He replied with enthusiasm. After taking the time to look at the wonderful summons, he turned to Noremu's familiar, saying "Hey there little guy, sorry about the trouble. Hope you can forgive me." he spoke with embarrassment.

"I'm just saying maybe we should dig a trench in front of the outpost." A sergeant spoke to his CO. "Goblins are short and don't climb very well, so if we dig it deep enough, they can't get out of it and we'll be free to do whatever we want to them."

"Son, digging a trench is a waste of time." asserted the lieutenant. "I don't doubt it'll stop the buggers, but why bother? Even with all their fancy new weapons, they still can't beat us and they know it. It's going to be a lot of work for little payoff. Besides, this whole thing's gonna blow over in a couple of days after the Monster Hunters finally clear them out. We'll be filling it up just as soon as we dig it up."

"Eh, maybe you're right. Maybe I'm overreacting. I was there when the Goblins attacked and they hit us hard."

"Well, I sure hope we don't have to actually deal with them. Phoenix Downs are getting expensive these days. In any case, get back on patrol route. It's almost time to relief B team."

"Aye aye, sir."

Noremu, listening to the commotion, gets a light smile on his face. These soldiers were all green, he realized. This was some of the first real combat many of them had ever seen. Both of the soldiers' talk proved that. The sergeant's inexperience was quite clear, but the lieutenant's blind faith in their hastily assembled monster hunter team was its own proof.

Either way, he was ready to get the operation started.

"It appears you'll fit right in." Nicholas congratulated Jim. "Unfortunately, we won't be eating until we make camp, so you will just have to make do until then. Now, let me describe our trek into Araguay." Just before he goes into briefing mode again, one of the guards approaches the group, a Chocobo in tow, loaded with backpacks of supplies.

"Excuse me, Nicholas, Monster Hunter Guild?" the guard asked the group, seeing who would respond.

Nicholas moved forward. "That's me. Ah, finally, our Chocobo has arrived. Thank you very much, sir." The guard returns the complement and handed the Chocobo over.

"This is Antigone. He's a sturdy big boy, aren't you?." Nicholas assured the bird in a softer tone, petting and stroking it's beak. "Antigone is going to be a key member in our team here. Which I will explain in a minute, but for the moment, you will be taking and carrying your own supplies and sleeping bags, rather than leaving it on the chocobo. If you get lost, at least you'll have your own food and first aid. And in an ambush, you can drop your stuff and be ready to fight, but a chocobo can't." He hands out the backpacks as he's talking.

"Our first objective will be to attack one of the forward goblin campsites. Goblins move their camps around to throw us off, but they always make them in the same locations. So we and the other teams out here will be striking at all of them at once. We will be moving in on one of their purported sites, a forest clearing one days in to the north. There is a chance that it may not be occupied, but we can't let a site go unchecked. Once there and if in use, we'll stake out the place and determine where the hostages are being held. Once that is determined, we will stage an ambush at night, when they are particularly vulnerable, thanks to the night cold.

Our first and highest priority is extracting the hostages. That's where Antigone comes in. He, a rider, and Jim, being the fastest runner of the group, will rush in and secure the hostages before the goblins can mount a defense. Once there, Antigone will run them to safety through the path the rest of us will keep clear. I believe the rider should naturally be Quint. He's the strongest of all of us and can easily hoist anyone onto Antigone if they are otherwise incapacitated. He can carry up to two people at once. Jim will help protect the hostages and draw attention away from them. Keith will be first in line in defense of Antigone's path. I will provide cover fire. Evaline will haste Quint, Jim and Antigone beforehand and support the rest of us. Noremu will summon Shiva all over those Goblins and Earl will provide item and shot where ever it's needed, as well as add Protect to everyone. Know that the goblins are holding families, and know that civilians don't take so well to being killed, especially children, so be ready to work fast and hard. Once the hostages are out of harm's way, we wipe those Goblins out with extreme prejudice. After they're done, we break all their weapons, especially the man made ones. Any questions?"

Noremu nods. "Must admit, I'm a little disappointed that we'll be needing to carry our own things, but I can see the value in it."

"I do have one suggestion though... I can easily use Shiva to draw the goblins away from camp. If I could do that, you would be able to easily evacuate the hostages with minimal difficulty. Once Shiva leaves us, they will come back, and you can use their own camp defenses against them."

Noremu looks up at Nicholas.

"Well Noremu, the thing is, they know Shiva means humans and the first thing they'll do is take the hostages under knife to stop the attack. No, it's smarter to use our moment of opportunity to secure the hostages first."

Hefting a suddenly heavy backpack onto his shoulders, Quint heard the plan without complaint, getting a small devilish grin at the phrase 'with extreme prejudice'. If everything wrapped up neatly, the goblins won't even know what happened before the end. Only one snag he could see, "What about intel on any alarms? If they're smart enough to force people to make these weapons, it'd only take a small wire on a string of bells to alert the entire base.."

"Absolutely true. When we are scouting the site out in the day, we shall be looking out for alert systems they might have in place. Keith will be primarily responsible for disabling them and any other traps they might have out. However, since their main defense is moving around, they may not have set much down, if at all. Don't let that put your guard down."

"I must also mention they would at least have a night watch going. Taking care of him would fall under my area, but unfortunately, I haven't quite got the hang of charging to full power yet, so can't take him down in one blow. Still, it will provide an excellent distraction and net you precious seconds."

"Simplicity is not a concern here. No archer worth his salt would have trouble making a shot just because his weapons arcs. If you're referring to charging to full power, I would have the same problem with the crossbow, or any other weapon as well. Furthermore the only advantages a crossbow has over a bow is that it's singlehanded and strong guys get more use out of it. It has shorter range, so I'd have to get closer and increase our chances for getting spotted. Or I could climb into a nearby tree and shoot him from a nice and safe distance with my Ice Bow. And because I'm somewhere high now, I can support the whole team with arrow fire. I'd be hardpressed to do the same thing with a crossbow."

"If there are no more questions, then let us get going then." He shouldered his backpack and started down the main road cutting into Araguay. "Now, we are heading down this road until we hit the trail for the World Oak. When we arrive there, it should be dusk and we'll make camp there. In the morning, we'll head North-Northeast to the goblin campsite."

As the team heads down the main road, an slightly tilted wagon appears in the distance. As they approach, it's condition becomes more clear. Pieces wildly strewn about, it's become evident that this once elegant and ornate wagon has been ambushed. Two bodies lay on the ground. One is face down, blood pooling around his head, then streaking across the path. The other was laying on his side, his arms were glued to his stomach. Both had been dead for some time now. Looking at the wagon itself, the front wheel seems to have been stuck in a pot hole. The wagon had been violently broken into. The door had been ripped off and the seat backs inside had been ripped out and tossed outside.

*Gasp*   "So much blood" I whispered to myself. I felt very uneasy about this scene, it made me imagine what really awaits us in those depths. We will get there and meet with the goblins, kill a few then... We will end up like these poor people here. Oh St. Ajora please protect us.

Nicholas moved to the doubled over man. Behind him was the side of the wagon, with some metal buried in the wood detailing. Nicholas pulled out a knife and dug the piece of metal out. It was a Goblin Bolt. "Yeah, Jim, this was Goblins alright."

"It seems this here fellow died from single blow to the head." Earl piped up, examining the other man's head. Laying just a few feet away, was a round, grapefruit sized stone, tinged with blood.

"Yeah, look at this, guys. This was no pothole either. Classic goblin trap." Keith observed, looking at the pothole the wagon wheel was stuck in. It had twigs and loosely woven grass sticking out from either side of the wheel coming from underneath. The hole itself was drying out. "Yeah, they'll dig a hole in the road, and cover it up so that the wagon can't go anywhere when they jump them. They like to add water to it so the wheel can't get any traction. Works especially well against these fancy flashy wheels these rich shmucks always have. It's kinda odd, though. You'd think these silver spoons would had have at least some bodyguards or an escort or something."

"Well, there's not much else we can do here. Earl, fire the flare." Nicholas instructed.

"Right. You guys might want to keep your distance." Earl rifled through his bag and pulled out a small white package on a long stick with a fuse sticking out of it. He pulled out a bottle, stuck the flare in stick first, lit the fuse and stepped back. A moment later, the package zoomed out of the bottle and into the sky, shining brightly in the sky. When it reached it peak, it gently fell out of the sky, falling downwards until it burned itself out.

"Now these flares will call the extraction team. They are always on standby, ready to pick up the hostages we save and to bring them back to civilization. Or bring their bodies back for a proper burial. It shouldn't take long for them to get here this time, but deep in the forest, we can be waiting for a while, particularly if they're busy." Nicholas explained.

While Noremu surveys the carnage in front of him, he spies a family portrait on the ground. It shows a father and mother with their son and his wife. They seem to be some sort of nobility. Noremu realizes that the men in this portrait are the one and the same people now dead. The women are missing, however.

'More hostages?' Normeu asks himself. 'And of rich folk, too. I thought they were only interested in the smithies... after all, what did they need money for? They take whatever they want and have never suffered themselves to buy.'

After a pause, with a flick of his hand, Resmu, his familiar, lands on his arm.
"Go, Resmu... find out where they are keeping the hostages." Resmu flies off.

Noremu takes one last look before leaving the scene. "Hmm?" Noremu looks at the items left scattered around. Upon closer inspection, something about the items stands out to him: they are all fake. Knockoffs. He bends down and grabs a vase of sorts, broken and shattered from the attack. Sure enough, it was a clear knockoff.

Noremu looks up to the rest of the group, unsure what to make of this new development.

"I knew the Malium family was a bunch of incompetent idiots." Clesenine grumbled, crossing her arms indignantly. "Why did I ever marry into that family?" She sighed. "I knew I should have pursued that young Beoulve..." Her mind drifts for a moment. "And you," she turned her anger on her daughter-in-law "aren't the Hyetals supposed to be famous for producing mages? Why didn't you do something back there? Hey! Watch it with that thing!" She yelped, dodging a prodding jab of a goblin's spear.

For her part, Halcyon remained silent and stared straight ahead as she made her way wherever her captors urged. Her eyes were as cold and hard as sapphires dredged from the bottom of a collapsed mine and her expression was as lifeless as the miner trapped under the rubble.

"Don't you be ignoring me." Clesenine continued. "I know you can still talk even when you're in that obnoxious doll mode of yours."

   "..."

"Look, you're not a Malium anymore. Death has done you part. You should be able to get us out of here now."

   "..."

The older woman's temper flared and she spun around to grab the girl's hand. Without hesitation or ceremony, she yanked the rings off. "There, you're a Hyetal again! Now cast something!"

The goblin captors did not take kindly to the sudden movements and squabbled incoherently in their own language. They hopped around madly and brandished their weapons toward the two women. A larger one, who seemed to have some semblance of control over the others stepped forward and pointed at Clesenine's hand with his weapon.

The woman scoffed. "You want these worthless things? You can have them!" With that, she threw the rings at the beast's feet.

The shiny objects were quickly gathered up, hastily examined, and shoved into a pocket. The leader goblin then pointed a sizable stack of raw materials, some equipment and some mostly finished weapons. "You. Make weapon." He forced the words out in such a way that made it obvious he was having language difficulties.

"Well," Clesenine said, tapping a foot as she glared at Halcyon, "what are you waiting for? Get to work."

"I cannot." Came a flat, emotionless response from the younger woman.

"I said get to work!" the older woman snapped, letting loose a vicious backhand.

Halcyon did nothing to avoid the strike, nor did she stumble after. She was accustom to this treatment so she returned to her stoic posture and endured.

"You no make weapon?" the goblin asked, thrusting his spear under her chin.

"I cannot make weapons. I have not been trained as a smith."

   "What you can do?"

   "I know some spells."

"You wizard?!" the beastman recoiled visibly, but recovered quickly and shoved his spear closer. Placing the sharp edge against her cheek, he glared suspiciously at her. "Why you no fight us with men?"

"I was not ordered to do so."

Clesenine chortled. "Oh, is that all you needed? An order? Fine then, I order you to attack these pesky goblins."

"You are no longer my master." If it was possible, Halcyon's voice was flatter than before.

   "What?"

"You said so yourself. I am no longer Malium. I am Hyetal. You cannot give me orders. You are no longer my master."

A sly, toothy grin crossed the boss goblin's face as he dug into his pocket and produced a pair of rings. "I you master now."

   "Understood." Halcyon said without hesitation.

"You show me spells. You kill old master with spells."

   "Yes, Master."

Nicholas came over. "What am I looking at here?" Earl picks up a piece of the vase and inspects the painted etchings. He spits on it and rubs the paint and gloss off. "Well this is interesting. I'm not too keen on identification of the finer things in life, but I believe this vase is an imitation." He picks up a chipped and scuffed, yet still intact wine crystal glass. He gives it a flick and it produces a dull and short-lived ring. "This is also very fake."

"Ah, so now it makes sense. These people aren't rich at all. They were just snobs desperately wanting to be rich. How sad can you be to want to be anything like those worthless fat cats? Well I hope they can find a knockoff coffin for their knockoff funerals." Keith exclaimed. "I bet those other two are pissing and moaning about having to sleep on the dirt or something."

"Well, rich or poor, they need our help and we are obliged to rescue them." reminded Nicholas. "Don't let your opinions get in the way of doing your job. You could be doing a lot worse for less pay."

All Keith can do is roll his eyes and wave his hand in dismissal.

After over half an hour, the extraction team finally arrived. It was a small caravan; a roomy and reinforced wagon carted behind two chocobos, flanked by several chocobo riders carrying large shields. Riding front and center, a bespectacled and decidedly doughy man rode up to Nicholas and his group. "Sherman Cedarfalls." acknowledged Nicholas.

"Mr. Atkins, why are you calling us so soon? Don't tell me you're quitting now. You just got started." Sherman chuckled.

"Well Mr. Cederfalls, we just happened upon the remains of a coach the goblins ambushed earlier today. The goblins killed the two men and took the two women with them."

"Ah, I see. How unfortunate. If you deployed earlier, we might have been able to intervene. Well in any case, we'll have these bodies looked over and returned to their proper families. I trust you and your rabble haven't taken anything, right?"

"Everything is as we found it except for the Goblin Bolt I dug out of the side of the wagon." Nicholas hands the bolt over to Sherman.

"Well, you do know that we are the only ones authorized to handle evidence."

"Yes, I'm aware of that. However, I had to remove it to determine and assess our then current security. Identifying the attackers right then and there meant the difference between being ready for a goblin attack or an attack from bandits."

"Sigh, that's still not an excuse, but I'll let it slide this time. I'm not making the rules here, I'm just enforcing them. You may go now, Mr. Atkins."

"Thank you very much, Mr. Cedarfalls. Have a good day."

Nicholas briskly turned away from the personnel management officer and gathered his group up to finally move on. As they were leaving, the accompaniment had covered the bodies with a cloth and were sliding stretchers underneath them to take them to the cart for their final trip home.

Such a funny name I thought, Mr. Cedarfalls. I couldn't help but imagine a water fall made of cedar trees. A little giggle slipped from me as I decided to walk close to Nicholas to inquire about a question.

Noremu frowned as the man asked about the bolt. This was a far more dangerous and important matter than the extraction team seemed to be taking it. It didn't help that this 'Cedarfalls' looked like he had never seen a battle in his life.

"What do you think you are doing!?" Clesenine cried as Halcyon raised a hand to the air.

In a moment, cool white aether began to coalesce and create a glowing aura around the mage's forearm.

"Stop that immediately!" the older woman demanded. Despite her authoritative air, she began to back away slowly, searching for a possible means of escape.

The goblins saw through her ploy and surrounded her, boxing her in with their weapons. They were careful, of course, not to get too close, so as to avoid being caught in the spell.

"Shiver, shiver, fear the wizard." Halcyon intoned, quoting one of the passages she had read. "Lest he catch you in his Blizzard."

The results of the spell resembled hail more than snow, and with no wind, it was certainly not an actual blizzard. Nonetheless, the conjured, localized precipitation showed no mercy to its intended target. Razor sharp shards of ice bit deep into Clesenine's body and chilled her to the bone. The woman screamed in agony and collapsed to her knees, hugging herself tightly.

"Please, no more." She sobbed plaintively.

"Kill her." The goblin leader sneered.

"..." Halcyon silently raised her arm again. In seconds, it began to glow again.

"I'll make your weapons..."  Clesenine's voice was barely audible.

"Wait!" the beastman shoved a hand against the mage's thigh as though holding her back.

Immediately, the gathered mana dissipated and Halcyon lowered her arm. "..."

"What you say?!" the goblin demanded, stomping forward to grab the noble woman by the chin and yank her face up to his. "You make weapon?"

"I..." she started. "My father was a smith. Though I have no formal training, I should be able to remember enough to make you something."

"Yes." He said, releasing her. "You make weapon. Now." He pointed to the supplies.

"Alright." Clesenine's shoulders slumped as she sighed, resigning herself to her fate. Slowly, painfully, she stood and walked, unsteadily, toward the waiting anvil. "I will need fire."

"You know fire?" the leader looked over at his wizard.

   "Yes, master." Halcyon replied flatly.

"You make fire. She make weapon."

   "Yes, master."

"What an asshole." Decried Keith. "'Maybe we could have saved them if we deployed earlier.' Well maybe we could have been out here already if those bureaucratic fucks weren't dragging their heels. Please tell me we aren't going to be seeing that douchebag every time we rescue a hostage? Yeah, what Evaline said."

"We don't have to worry much about seeing Mr. Cedarfalls much." Nicholas replied. "He usually only goes as far as the transport does and that can't go into the forest. It's not his job to put his life on the line, so he'll just have the rest of extraction do it for him."

Some time later down the main path, they finally found the worn footpath to the World Oak cutting into the forest growth itself. "Ladies and gentlemen, when we enter into that path, we'll have officially entered the woods themselves." Nicholas announced. "From here on out, we are on our guard and not just from goblins. Spooks, living trees and all sorts of monsters occupy these woods. We should be okay for today, but as we go deeper into this woods, the presence of monsters will make themselves obvious. Make yourselves ready, because we are going in. Keith, front and center and start sweeping for traps."

"Yes sir." Keith complied, stepping on the trail and into the forest.

Contrasting the commander's warnings, Araguay itself seems so opening and welcoming. The sunshine streaming through the canopy danced on the heavy moss and root covered floor below, intermingling with the smell of fresh wood. The trail itself was rising up a gentle hill, defined by being the only part of the forest floor not carpeted by moss, instead being overturned rich black earth, slightly packed. The sounds of singing and chattering birds fill the air around them. Yes, as far as the eye can see, the woods seemed almost scenic and peaceful.

This place did seem peaceful. Very... safe. But Noremu knew better. The collective voice of the woods whispered to his attuned ear dark words and curses that would make any grown man shutter. He already felt an itch to call across the void for one of his summons, but he knew the folly in that decision. Noremu drew his staff and took reassurance in the glowing, clear jewel that adorned it. At its bottom was a pointed metal edge, just in case anything got too close. Noremu looked at it and chuckled, vowing to get himself a true sword for the next mission... perhaps with the same, clear crystal composing the blade so that he might use it to channel magic.

Spooks, living trees and all sorts of monsters occupy these woods? Oh dear I thought. I remember tales that Grandmama told me once, about creatures made of tentacles! Tentacles that can reach you from any angle and strike you down with extreme force! Oh dear, this will be quite the trek. I glanced over at Nicholas. He seems to be able to keep his cool in any situation, and he looks to be quite strong... I wonder if he would mind if I stayed close to him? Sure hope not! I clutched my staff with both my hands and kept close to Sir Nicholas.

"All right this is it. Keep your cool, be alert and don't stray from the group." Jim said to himself. As a form of preparation, he began to check his inventory. "Hmmm, shurikens, right here." he was somewhat disappointed because of the fact that shurikens were the only ones he could throw. Not having a variety of throwing weapons bothered him a bit. But still, at least he got the best shurikens in the markets. These Yagyus will pack a punch against those monsters. I hope they won't be undeads though.

Despite the commander's warnings, the initial trek was uneventful. Perhaps they heard a unfamiliar cry once or twice, but no danger presented themselves to the group. As they approached the World Oak, dusk was upon them. It was time to set up camp for the night. The World Oak, as its name suggests, was a towering majesty. Roots and vines and bark intermingling and lacing elegantly around the ancient oak's base, all coated with a mossy finish. As the team approached, it easily filled one's vision and mind.

Keith broke from the group briefly to sweep the area for traps, and to find a suitable spot to set up camp among the exposed roots and slithering vines. Still no traps, but a root free spot was found. It was still uneven, and was slightly tilted, but as a camping spot, it'll work. He waved the party over.

The wood was gathered, the tents were set up, and a fire was roaring. The moss had to be dug away to expose dirt for the fire. The rations were cooked and distributed. It wasn't very good, but if one wanted better food, one would have to hunt it themselves.

"Keith, as far as rations go, these aren't the worst you've ever had." Nicholas retorted between bites. The sun had set quickly and left the group in chilly spring night. "Why, back in my day in the war, we were lucky they weren't covered in mold, or even got them at all."

"Well, yeah, same here, but that was wartime. This is peacetime." said Keith. "The name of the game now is more that just get it out as quickly as possible and try not to get plague in it. There's no raids or blockades to worry about. They're just cutting corners and expecting us to eat shit because we did at one point. You let people get away with way too much, boss."

As Nicholas prepared to counter, flapping broke over the chatter. Resmu had come back.

"How much longer are you going to make me work?" Clesenine complained, despite knowing that most of her captors had no idea what she was saying. "I've already made a ton of weapons today, you know." She waved a lazy hand in the direction of said pile. "I'm liable to start making mistakes if I don't get some sleep." She finished with a yawn.

The craftsmanship was nowhere near as good as her fathers had been back when he was still alive, but for someone as inexperienced as she was, the weapons were not half bad. Certainly, they were good enough for these lowly, disgusting goblins.

At least the horrid little creatures had been kind enough, if such a term were appropriate, to provide a filling meal. It wasn't the cuisine to which she was accustomed in the civilized, noble life, but the hungrier one is, the lower one's standards become.

Halcyon had eaten the provided food with no complaints, though still in her doll mode, this was to be expected. Her emotionless, vacant stare was becoming quite disquieting as Clesenine had never seen her maintain it for such a long period of time. She was like the mindless machines of Goug, and solemnly obeyed every command of their captors' leader.

Presently, the younger mage was returning from yet another patrol around the camp with a group of goblins. The vermin had protested loudly in their indecipherable language when their leader had ordered them to accompany Halcyon, presumably due to her ability to cast ice magic. Even a noble, such as Clesenine, who was not in the habit of learning about the lesser creatures of Ivalice, knew of the goblins' innate fear of cold. The leader had apparently calmed their fears by assuring them the girl was under his full control, and as far as Clesenine could see, she actually was.

"Stop staring at me." The older woman grumbled.

   "..."

"It's annoying. Go away." She made a dismissive motion with her hand.

   "..."

Clesenine sighed. "I won't be able to complete this next spear if you keep staring at me like that."

"I was ordered to keep an eye on you."

"What, I'm not doing a good enough job or something?"

   "..."

"Look, just turn away or something. I can't concentrate."

"..." Though no verbal response was issued, Halcyon nonetheless turned her gaze away.

Silence prevailed between the two human woman for a while, broken finally by the rhythmic striking of hammer against spearhead as the apprentice-level smith returned to work.

"We have to think of a way out of here." Clesenine finally spoke after finishing the spear, setting it on the pile, and gathering new materials for the next weapon she was to forge.

   "..."

"You can't seriously be considering staying with these... things, can you?"

   "..."

   "You are, aren't you?"

   "..."

"Fine then." Clesenine's eyes turned hard. "When I think of something, I'll just do it on my own. "You can stay here forever for all I care."

"Hey." The goblin leader approached angrily. "What you talking?"

"She wishes to escape." Halcyon responded simply.

"What?" he growled. "You no escape!" He shouted, slapping the older woman hard enough to knock her off her crude stool and onto the ground. "You make weapon!"

If looks could kill, Halcyon would have died a thousand times over from the daggers of pure hatred Clesenine's eys threw at her.

"You watch." The leader turned to the mage. "She try escape. You kill."

   "Yes, master."

Resmu lands on Noremu's shoulder. "Oh? What did you find, my friend?"

While no one saw any form of perceptible communication from the two, Noremu understood everything quite clearly. It helped that they were able to communicate with a sort of picture-language through the void and back.

"Hmm. So here's what he found... to the north/northeast, about... hmm... perhaps a four hour's walk away, there's a goblin camp. Looks like he saw two captives there, but nothing else aside from a horde of goblins. Unfortunately, he tells me that he couldn't find any traps. Seems like he was too high up."

"There's one thing else, though. Something about the captives seems... off. Resmu doesn't quite understand it and frankly neither do I, but there's something fishy about one of them. I can't place it, but best be on our guard."

Noremu looks back up to Resmu and asks him to elaborate more. Resmu sends him what he's seen; Noremu sees a picture of a mildly attractive young woman and an older lady, but something seems wrong with the younger one. She and the older woman are clearly not getting along, but it looks to run deeper than that. She looks almost to be assisting the goblins in more ways than a hostage would.

Noremu's neutral expression drops to a frown, but he says nothing to the rest of the group.

"Well, this is excellent news." surmised Nicholas. "We now know we are not wasting a trip going into an empty campsite, and that we are most likely rescuing just two people this time. Very good news. We'll be able to take a better look when we get closer tomorrow. Let's finish up our meals and decide on tonight's watch duties. I will take the middle shift, since it's the hardest shift to wake up and go back to sleep on. The rest of the shifts I'll let you divide amongst yourselves."

Noremu groans. "Well, since we have to, I'll take the latest shift. I won't need to get ready in the morning then."

"Ow!" Clesenine exclaimed before letting a string of curses escape her throat as she yanked her hand away from the scalding metal she had just accidently used for support. Dousing the burn in the bucket of cool water did little to alleviate the pain and she could already see angry blisters forming on her palm.

"What happen?" the goblin leader asked, striding up.

"This is what happened!" The noblewoman growled, holding her injury up to his face; perhaps a little too close. "I can't make your stupid weapons like this!"

   "That all?"

"Wh-what do you mean, is that all?" Clesenine sputtered. "I can't use..." The white light of a healing spell made her trail off.

"Better. Now you make more weapon."

The older woman stared at her hand for a moment and wiggled her fingers before sighing. "That still doesn't change much." She explained quietly. "I can't keep up this pace forever, you know. Eventually, I need to sleep."

The goblin looked at the pile of finished pieces for a moment. Even an apprentice appraiser would easily realize that the quality was slowly dropping as the smith's energy and concentration depleted. After a moment of silence, he turned back to her. "You sleep now."

"Thank you." The prisoner said with honest relief. Immediately, she began to seek a viable place to settle down for the night. She doubted proper bedding would be provided, so she chose a spot that was relatively flat and free of detritus.

No longer caring for her appearance, she ripped a loose section off her dress and folded it up to use as a pillow. After a day of working the forge, the garment was beyond ruined, and a little padding under her head was better than nothing. The last thing she wanted was to get a crick in her neck and further hinder her weapon making abilities tomorrow.

"You sleep too now." The beastman ordered Halcyon.

   "Yes, master." The girl responded.

For her part, the younger woman simply sat at the base a tree, leaned against it and closed her eyes. Within moments, her breathing had slowed and steadied, indicating she was likely already asleep. While she did not look completely serene and comfortable, she certainly did not look uncomfortable.

Clesenine grumbled another curse as she stared at her ex-daughter-in-law before closing her eyes.

Jim, now confused of the order of the shifts, puts things into perspective.

Nicholas: Middle shift. Can be 3rd or 4th.
Noremu: Latest shift.  late  - is he referring to the 7th one?
Evaline: The one before Nicholas. So 2nd or 3rd?
Quint: ?
Keith: ?
Earl: ?

Okay, then I'll take the shift before Miss Evaline.

Quote"Although I sleep hard, so the one before me will have fun waking me up."

This'll be fun.

"If you chaps don't mind, I'll would like take the first shift. I must stay up anyhow to write my reports." Earl asked.

"I'll take the 2nd shift." Keith casually announced.

"Then that leaves Quint with the 6th shift. If that's all settled, then the rest of us should be heading to bed." Nicholas continued to instruct the group. "You will determine the length of your shift by the position of the moon." He quickly drew an arc into the dirt and roughly divided it into 7 parts. "This should help in case you have difficulty determining the moon position. Under no circumstances are you to leave our camp unwatched for any length of time. If you are going to fall asleep, be responsible and wake up the next man in line. I personally guarantee the consequences for falling asleep on watch will be much harsher than ending your shift early. Keep the fire fed so you can see. If something is attacking, give a shout. If you think something is out there, wake me up and Keith and I shall investigate it for you. Oh, and pay attention to Antigone. He may be able to sense danger before you can see it or be able to confirm it. Any questions? If not, then we are headed to bed. We have a long day tomorrow, so rest up. Good night, Earl."

With Nicholas ending his lecture, everyone besides Earl headed inside the two tents set up to get a good night's rest for tomorrow's expedition.

Despite the long deliberation over night watch, nothing of consequence happens that night. With a peaceful breeze gently massaging the skin and leading the leaves and trees on a slow and gentle dance to the tune of cricket chirps, the night proves to be just as scenic and relaxing as it was in the daytime. From were they're camped, it seems that all in the world is right, if only for one night.

As the sun began to rise in the morning, the problems of the world would raise it's ugly head. Noremu after a long and uneventful shift was greeted in the warming sunshine by a stern looking man and his two compatriots. "HEY! HEY YOU GUYS! YOU CAN'T CAMP HERE!" he shouted in anger, waving wildly to get everyone's attention. He marched right up to the only man standing, Noremu with little disregard for his personal space. "What the hell do you people think you're doing? You can't camp here. This is protected property, set aside by the Atkascha family themselves. You people need to clear out this area right now or we're hauling you in for trespassing."

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves around the clearing allowing shifting shafts of sunlight to filter through. One beam glanced across Clesenine's face, causing her to stir from her slumber.

"Mmmff..." she murmured, opening her eyes. What a beautiful day! She smiled and sat up to stretch.  The pleasant aroma of food reached her nose and she inhaled deeply. Someone near was cooking up something delicious, so she looked around for the source. Wait...

"Good, you wake." A larger than average goblin approached her.

Cold and cruel reality crashed down upon her consciousness as she recalled her dire circumstances. Suddenly, the food no longer smelled as good as she noticed what the goblin leader was carrying.

"You eat now." He said, setting a bowl of slop before the noblewoman. "Then you make more weapon."

"Right..." Clesenine replied with a sigh before reluctantly picking up the bowl.

"Mage!" the beastman called, walking over to Halcyon. "You eat now!"

The girl's eyes opened slowly and her head lolled a bit as though she may fall back asleep at any moment. She gasped and jumped a little when the goblin set her bowl beside her and she started to raise her hands as though to ward off an attack. But then, she froze in mid motion. The life drained from her eyes and after a moment, she reached silently for her food. "Thank you, master." She intoned.

"You eat quick, then you make patrol."

   "Yes, master."

Noremu's eyes widen as he sees the group rushing toward them. He curses under his breath; surely the entire forest had heard this man's scream!

What made matters worse, however, was something he saw out of the corner of his eye: a brief flash of red. Goblin red. Normeu's spirit dropped instantaneously. Goblin red in a place like this meant only one thing: scouts.

As they approach, Noremu glares at the approaching group, giving the first man a look of extreme annoyance in his eyes. "You idiot!" Noremu says quietly, yet burning with rage. "Do you have any idea what you've just done!?" With a flick of his wrist, Resmu materializes nearby and lands on his arm. "Resmu, I need you to find where that scout went. We'll need to eliminate him quickly if we're to keep the element of surprise." Resmu flies off.

Noremu returns his attention to the group in front of him. Giving their leader an admittedly harsh whack with his staff, he spins around and moves to wake the group as quickly as possible. "Nicholas! Keith! We have a situation!"

"What's going on?" Nicholas demands, lumbering out of of his tent. As he stumbles out of the tent, he sees Noremu releasing Resmu. He was still not entirely sure what's going on, but he could sense the danger in the air. He knew instant action was demanded. He called Antigone over while he strapped his quiver on and clutched his bow. Quickly leaping on the chocobo, he charged after the familiar.

As he followed the bird's path, he can see what he was chasing after: a goblin scout. Despite it's headstart and skillfully clamoring over the roots and uneven terrain, the chocobo caught up to him with ease. Fast enough in fact to get in front of him and route him. Surprised at chocobo and rider appearing in front of him and seeing an icy arrow notching, it started running to the side.  Nicholas quickly drew his bow and shot the goblin, easily hitting his mark now that he wasn't riding. Despite letting out a pathetic cry, it still didn't go down, still trying to run away in vain. It clutched at the mercilessly cold arrow stuck in it's chest, sucking his life away. Nicholas' next shot pierced the scout's back, finally dropping him and ending the chase.

Nicholas rode up to the goblin and quickly dismounted. He knew the scouting party this goblin was apart of couldn't be very far away and finding a corpse with arrows in it was a dead giveaway of humans. He had to grab the body and hide it. Despite the goblin's small stature, the creature was deceptively heavy. He still managed to drape the body over the back of the chocobo before leaping on himself. Securing the corpse as best as he can, he rode off back to camp.

"What a way to start a morning." he thought as he headed back to camp. He was pissed at whoever was screaming just now, but it would have to wait. "Everyone get up.", he called out as he re entered the camp site, "Pack everything up quickly. We have to leave. Now." He knew that scout would be missed, but as long as they don't actually see humans, they might avoid completely tipping off the goblin camp. Still, it was a desperate attempt at salvaging the element of surprise he was hoping for and he knew it. Meanwhile, looming in the distance, the approaching chatter of goblins could be heard.

As everyone was hurriedly packing the tents up, Keith spoke up. "Nicholas, you gonna hide that body right? Let me and these rangers here find a place to dump the body while you get everyone else to safety. Just leave me the chocobo."

Nicholas paused to think for a moment before approving. "Just make sure you and Antigone make it back."

He lept off the chocobo to help pack everything up. Promptly, Keith mounted the corpse bearing chocobo and started heading off to the east. "You rangers know a good spot to dump a body, right? C'mon follow me guys."

Before they could blubber out an answer, Keith was already off. "HEY! WAIT UP!" the loudmouthed ranger yelled after him while running after them, apparently not learning his lesson at all. Both Keith and rangers disappeared into the thick of the surrounding wood. Meanwhile, everyone had finished hastily packing and ran off in a separate path, with Nicholas, Quint, and Jim packing the tents.

"DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING?" the ranger continued to sound off on Keith, who finally slowed down and let them catch up to him. Keith seemed oddly content with the ranger yelling at him and made no attempt to make him quiet down despite being counterproductive to hiding a body from the goblin scouts, who were very likely on their trail now.

"Well I guess I really don't know, do I?" Keith seemed at a loss. "Well, I'm sure we'll find someplace to ditch the body. In the meantime, can I borrow your knife?"

"WHAT? WHAT DO NEED-" one of his compatriots gave him a sharp nudge. "What do you need my knife for?"

"I left my knife at camp. Just lemme have it."

The ranger was displeased having to do something so trivial while running, but he resigned and handed over a knife to Keith. "I don't know what you think you and your pals are doing, but why are you so intent on hiding this body?" he demanded.

"Well, if the scouts don't actually come back with a body, their tribe won't be completely alarmed when we make our raid on them." Keith answered casually, using the ranger's knife to dig out Nicholas' arrows out of the goblin.

"You were going to attack them? But they'll still be on guard. Do you really think this will make any difference? And why are you digging those arrows out?" The ranger was getting irritated at having to run while Keith had dug the arrows out of the corpse at ease. "And can you pick up the pace, you're on a chocobo, you know."

"We are just trying to salvage our raid that you just ruined because you had to scream at us because we were camping around some royally sanctioned hunk of wood." Keith had put the arrows away and was now ripping the holes that the arrows had made in the body, turning them into gashes. In the distance, loud rustling was constantly following them in the distant background, along with the sounds of the goblin unit in pursuit.

"That's not our problem. We only care about maintaining the aesthetic and health of the World Oak Sanctuary for future generations. What are you doing?"

"You mean keeping the pretty part of Araguay pretty so that you can keep rollin' in money from tourists, right? I'm pretty sure tourists don't like getting mugged and killed by rampant goblins. Here, I'm done with your knife." He threw the bloodied knife back to the ranger, causing him to almost stumble as he juggled the knife about trying to not drop it.

"Answer my question!" the ranger's voice was rising, about to go into shouting mode again. "What are you doing there?!"

"Just getting ready to dump the body." he answered coldly, releasing the body directly into the group, the sudden and unexpected weight knocked all three of them to the ground. "Later assholes!" he cheerfully shouted at them as loudly as possible before darting off to the side at top speed, disappearing into the woods.

"HEY! HEY!! GET BACK HERE!" the ranger was full on yelling now, completely red in the face. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!! HEY!!!" The ranger's complete disregard for stealth had sealed his fate. As he and his companions were getting up from underneath the goblin, the entire scouting party had closed the distance between them. Bloodied knife still in hand, the conclusion was simple to reach. Finally realizing how this all looks, he and his two companions tried to make a break for it.

Thankfully noticing the party before it was too late, Noremu moved carefully about, making sure that the group of goblin scouts didn't see him... though it wasn't especially difficult considering the circumstances. The bigger issue at hand, however, was that he had been separated from the group in the confusion.

'Great,' Noremu thought to himself. 'Now what?' Well, at least he knew where the goblin camp was. Deciding to head in that direction and use Resmu as a scout (to keep an eye out for the others to regroup with), Noremu proceeds onward, being extra vigilant now that they were in real goblin territory.

I woke up unexpectedly to the sound of yelling. Jumping out of bed quickly so I may inspect the matter, I poked my head out the tent flap to peer outside. There were unfamiliar people, loud people at that. Noremu summon his familiar, and began yelling for Nicholas and Keith. I grabbed my staff and pulled the tent flap open. The smell of the outdoors assaulted my nose. The sound of more yelling occurred as Nicholas got on his chocobo and rode off after Noremu's familiar. Interesting morning I said out loud to myself, followed by a stretch and more talking to myself. Time for my daily energizer. I cast haste upon myself, the surge of energy pouring into my body woke up every part of me that was still asleep, and pumped life into them. I felt like I was able to do anything! But before too long my energy toned down, and Nicholas was back, with a goblin on his chocobo. Oh my I thought. This can't be good. I promptly headed over to Noremu, or at least where I saw Noremu disappear off to.
