Title: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 11, 2011, 01:50:15 am
So, guys, I've taken up a bet with a number of the various Spriters at our fine site here at Final Fantasy Hacktics.

The contents of this bet?  If they can supply me with an adequate number of (Season 1) Power Rangers, a Megazord, some Puddies, and other essential Sprite-based materials needed, I will make a Power Rangers Mini-Patch.  At least one brave soul is actively taking up this challenge and others seemed to express interest, so we'll see how this goes.

Why this thread?  To build hype, to make sure I don't forget, to make sure THEY don't forget, and to get the input of you, the reader.  I've already got a rather solid outline for plot continuance, encounters, abilities, stereotypical always-the-same-place Megazord battleground, etc., so never fear if ye have no ideas.  However, if any of you come up with any cool ideas for this mini-mod, from cool potential battle/cutscene scenarios, potential bosses, skills for allies and enemies, and whatever else may come to mind, feel free to suggest it here.  I feel I've already got a solid foundation but because of how spur-of-the-moment the actual drive to make this project is, there's a high chance some collaboration could easily improve it.

So, thinktank with me, mein brothers and mein sisters, while we wait for our Sprites to be completed.

EDIT: For those who want to know how this project will differ from the actual Final Fantasy Tactics mechanically, visit my other Project. (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=6794.0)  These two Projects will share a majority of basic gameplay changes with each other, though the gameplay itself will obviously be vastly different by virtue of concept differences.  For those who don't want to check that, the important stuff is that Move/Act no longer grants bonus CT, almost everything works off either Fury or Will (Brave or Faith), and Status interaction is greatly modified.  There will hopefully be a few mechanics that will, however, be unique to the Special Power Rangers Edition.  I have a few planned but they are not the easiest to code so I won't be announcing those until I have working versions of them.

Also, for those wondering what a Power Ranger looks like in the Final Fantasy Tactics Universe:

Hahaha! I think this is a hilarious idea. Unfortunately my age-addled brain only permits me to remember the vaguest things about the Power Rangers. You have my spiritual support on this one, Raven, but I'm afraid I can't offer much in the way of ideas.

Go go Power Raven.

Well then, Celdia, it's time we got our Wasserman on! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNJ1DgSGGkg&feature=related)

EVERYONE, ROCK OUT, GET BACK TO YOUR INNER TEN YEAR OLD AND AIDE ME ON MY QUEST.

This is going to be amazing, assuming I get an adequate pool of Sprites to work with.

Haha! This is great! He looks like he is having a moustache though, oerhaos make the white part smaller? White seems to contrast with reds a lot. Hoe sad, I can't even remember how original Power Rangers looks...

The mouth guard looks a bit strange on the forward facing because there isn't anything separating it from his chestpiece of the same color. Maybe make the three almost-grey like pixels on the bottommost of the mouth guard red so they're more like the helmet outline or his chest so the two don't blend as much.

Otherwise... fucking amazing.

Kage, I have never heard of Prism Rangers until you made look them up just now, sadly, but they all look like palette swaps of the same base with no edits from what my quick bout of Google-fu returned, so if someone wants to make a sprite I'll Wiki-up my knowledge of them and add them for a bit of extra hilarity.  Though if we take that route, Axem Rangers would also be boss.

Hahahaha! You must have never played Disgaea, Raven. Prism Rangers are a parody of Power Rangers, they are "heroes of justice", but fail at this. IMO, they fit a lot into a parody your patch is supposed to be, hehe.

Nope, never played it, actually.  Been meaning to play at least one entry in the Disgaea series but never end up getting around to it.

If someone ends up making them, though, I'll become learned enough to make use of them and find a way to bullshit them into the plot thread I have conceived so far.

I will do them once Lijj finishes some Power Rangers. If you are aiming for story, Disgaea 1 has the best one, but Disgaea 2 is best IMO(many nice features and all). I am talking about PSP versions for both, never played PS2 versions.

Prism Ranger scene.  In fact that entire chapter of the game is one of the best segments of any game.  Ever.  But, yeah, they're all palette swaps.

The voice acting would have me end up playing the game on mute. >_>

Anyway, the sprite's front-quarter view and side view look very strange. The mouth guard is too long. It could easily be fixed with another few red pixels, though. Otherwise, agreed on making a distinction between mouth guard and chest plate for the front view.

Excellent!
Looking at it now The mouth part does look a little odd. I'll work on that. I'm glad you like it otherwise because it wont be that hard to finish this base. I feared you'd be super picky and ask: "what about the diamonds on the legs and arm?" or something; which would make little sense since there are few pixels to work with and editing arms takes hours.
So perfect I can't wait to design the next helmet I claim The black on next; Zach, he has a cool helmet design I want to try.
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 11, 2011, 09:22:57 pm
Well, there's a point where I realize accuracy gives way to the constraint of the pixel art medium.

It looks very believably like a Season 1 Power Ranger with as much detail as you can reasonably fit.  Can't really ask for much more.  Now it's just mouthguard fixes and general stuff to polish it off and HELMETSWAP HO!

For the record, the voice acting is purposely bad for the Prism Rangers.

The palette seems too dark and the pants colour jumps from light to dark instantly.
The gloves and boots are only using 3 of the 5 whites, why?
The front view and diagonal views belts have completely opposite shading.

Because it's almost unnecessary to go through and recolor all of the arms if you want to shade the arms go for it. just let me finish what I'm doing first. I'll put it into the drop box when I'm happier with the complete sheet. The boots are actually using more than 3. and it makes sense since the white of the gloves and boots is lighter than the silvery color of the face. So the dark shades are for the face. I can easily adjust the palette in seconds so no problem there.
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 12, 2011, 01:57:49 am
Palettes being easy to adjust is why I try to worry less about what the colors actually are until it's almost ready to be submitted or used.  The first time I looked at it I was far more concerned with the actual design and detailing that the colors and was rather happy with it.  The only detail that really seems to be missing are the glove/boot diamonds like you mentioned before but the pixels would get so muddled trying to add that would only likely cause it to look worse.  If someone wants to try and get a good looking version of it with diamonds on the extremities, they're free too, but I'm more than happy with it without that bit since I'm too afraid of how they could end up compromising the overall quality.

I can't wait to see the portrait for this, heh.  Will you be using the character's face for the portrait or the helmet?  Both would be interesting but seeing a fucking Power Ranger Helmet in the portrait box would be so fucking boss.

(http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/5293/jason2.png)Old versus new clean up.. Almost done with walking frames. I forgot to fix the visor on the side view, but I'll get it next time.
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 12, 2011, 07:54:58 am
Side view, the whites from the body and shoulder also blend together so it kinda looks like a piece of armor when it shouldn't.  Try to break that up a bit if you can, since you've handled that white-red-white contrast rather well on the other four angles.  New red is much better despite my love of dark reds because those aren't exactly fitting of the Red Ranger.  I like that visor fix as well.

This is coming along great so far personally, Lijj.  If this whole thing flops and that Red Ranger ends up being the only one complete, I'll probably end up using him as an easter egg in my other patch because it's just jaw-dropping how awesome it is to see him as an FFT Sprite.

Most suitable for this task is Dragon. Big, four legs, not so much problems to edit unlike Chocobo. Why Goblins though....
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 12, 2011, 04:25:03 pm
Yes it was, Kage.  It's very easy to make any sum of monsters you want mountable with a small amount of sprite relocation and some hex edits, and it'll look moderately believable.

However, there is a far more show-accurate plan for Zords in the works.  The more Zords I'm able to acquire, the more elaborate and awesome this plan will turn out, but know that this aspect of the game has already been planned out pretty thoroughly in terms of concept and basic implementation due to how key it is.

(For those wondering, to make whichever monsters you please mountable, relocate spritesheets so that they come directly after Chocobo [so that for example, your monsters are ordered Chocobo-Behemoth-Dragon-Panther-Tiamat-everything else], open up Razele's All Monsters are Mountable hack, and change x30 to the hex equivalent of the sum monsters you wish to have become mountable.  In the above example, you would edit x30 to x0E, because we were trying to make 15 total monster classes mountable [5 base breeds, 3 sub-classes per breed, 5 * 3 is 15] and 0E is the hex equivalent of 15.)

Raven you have my word, I'll at least finish the Rangers.
Actually, I thought last night of a funny addition. A fight with the left out and  bitter Purple Ranger of the Stegosaurus; really high defense. He was simply excluded by Zoran at the last minute due to technical difficulties in the zords and became aware of this missed chance via the enemies or something clever. Maybe he's another student they might even know.

I neglected the side view I see exactly what you mean; it'll be fixed in the next round.

That's kind of what my idea for trying to get the Prism Rangers in was going to be, actually.

I have this really obscurely weird plan that involves mauling canonical Ivalice with some "DON'T YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SCIENCE?!", resulting in many amazing boss battles.

ah . I saw that disgaea parody; how funny. Alright
Oh for the portrait I'll definitely want to do them helmeted. if we could have more colors it'd be neat to do some half and half effect but that wouldn't look good unless we could double the palette.
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on February 12, 2011, 08:35:49 pm
Half and half would look kinda bleh regardless, honestly, unless you did some ridiculous effect that'd probably take over 2 palettes to make look nice.

Helmet is more than pimptastic.

Posting so Lijj sees this.

There is one detail I do need to be picky on with the Ranger sprites if I may.  The Spell Charging animation, can you make it Ramza's one-handed style instead of the usual two-handed style?   This would make it perfect for a Zord-calling animation in addition to an animation fitting for charging something a Power Ranger would typically toss out since they're not directly casting spells unless they're from that one season with magic morpher cell phones.

And if you can, could I get Portraits of Zordon and Alpha 5?  I can load up the Dropbox with sources for them if needed.  It's non-essential, but it'd be a nice touch to be able to display their portraits if they talk to the Rangers over the communicators.  Very low priority though compared to basically everything else.

...The head bobbing makes me think of Elvis for some reason.  That's fucking glorious.  I assume he'll have a left arm on his back singing animation in game though! :p

E:  Oh, that IS his left arm.  I'm just retarded, pay no mind.  The shoulder just looks a bit odd, probably needs more red pixels.  That means what he technically needs is a right arm then, looks kinda odd as is even though I have that faux paus straightened out now.

I'm half and half on the "Go Go" bit, but it is making me laugh so fucking hard right now, like you couldn't possibly know.

How much longer till he's finished, Lijj?  I'm guessing he's nearly done by now.

Personally i prefer the Front "Straight" Portrait, instead of the 3/4 style portrait of FFT.

I can see why you'd think that, dbp, but I intend to still use many of FFT's original sprites, so maintaining the same artwork style between the portraits is very important aesthetically.  Keeping it that way also makes it easier on people who for some reason may want to incorporate Power Rangers into their own mods for some reason since these sprites will obviously be publicly released.  That, and I think that portrait looks pretty awesome, especially for a completely custom job.

Just posting to let people who don't want to read my other, far more Tl;dr Project Thread (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=6794.0) that this Project and that one share a large amount of mechanical and gameplay elements.  This means any time I work on one mod, I'm technically working on both until I get to coding events or the skillsets of the Rangers themselves and such.  So those who may fear that one Project may cause the other to not be completed, fear not, as the opposite is what's actually occurring here.

Speaking of skillsets for the Rangers and such - anyone who has some good conceptual or applicable skillsets for the various Power Rangers (Red, Blue, Black, Pink, Yellow, Green), Putties, Lord Zed, the Megazord, Dragonzord, Tyannosauruszord, Dragonzord in Battle Mode, the Prism Rangers, or anything else that is / may be appearing uniquely in this Project, feel free to post them.  Skillsets are the one area I currently have made almost no progress in so far, so I'll take all the help I can get.  Even a bad idea can get the creative juices flowing to find a good one.

EDIT: Updated the OP with some more information and the screenshots of Red Ranger in Orbonne.

Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: RavenOfRazgriz on March 01, 2011, 01:42:55 pm
The problem with the "Go" is that with how the game handles animations, it would end up mirrored as "oG" half the time, then there's backgrounds to worry about, etc.

It was amazing, it's just one of those things that is far more amazing looking at it on the sheet than it is in-game, sadly.

I'm rather excited to see your Black Ranger, when its finished.

My computer got raped and forced to factory defaulting and I'm stuck dealing with a lot of RL issues currently.

I was able to somehow salvage some files, but I've not gone through them all yet.  I think most of my FFT hacking-related things are there.

I'll try to get back up and running soon.  I've not given up on any of these projects, regardless of if I have the files still or not, no worries.  It's just a setback far larger than I originally thought it would be followed by my computer righteously screaming "GO FUCK YOURSELF."

That's unfortunate to hear, but I'm sure you can bounce back from a setback like Dr. Doom, especially if I could after my (older) computer basically completely died years back.

...This reminds me that I should probably back things up again, at least to a flash-drive.

You should.

I'm just taking whatever's not already there and putting it in my Dropbox so this never happens again.  My idea to video-preview the Power Rangers sprites is on hold unless I can think of an alternate worthwhile video to make that doesn't require me speaking, as well, sadly.  Though I'll be getting on trying to get the first couple events made soon.  The opening event will involve using things I've never experimented with before, so it may take longer than I'd like.

Ok fair enough.. no mic? Interested in seeing this experimental opening!
Green Ranger will be finished in a week (approx).. there's just one second half of a sprite to finish first, a male Ronin/parivir. I needed a minor switch up; after five rangers I felt like a machine heheh. but worry not Tommy will get his morph on, I am a man of my word. After Green Ranger I must get back to work on Sahagin.

It's an edit of an existing cutscene (quite literally), I've just never used the commands before so it'll be... "fun" to sort through.

Take your time on it, Lijj.  I won't actually need him for the opening cutscene, though he'll be pretty important overall.

Can't wait for the Sahagin myself, I'm going to try and use it in Redesign if I have room.  I'm hopeful on it turning out amazing.  Hell, the Rangers vs a really buff Sahagin that ends up being Orlandu in a costume would be a golden Scooby Doo moment.

His helm seems very similiar to Jason's no? N'way, I don't think the highlight movement on back frames helm is a good idea, he isn't pulling his head back and forward after all, so I guess keeping it the same on all frames is the best way(same for one frame on forward walkin frame, notice how highlight goes up by one pixel). Also, on back walking frames notice how above his left arm some yellow pixels flash form time to time, it looks weird and out of place.  Greens looks great, but I just can't escape the feeling it would be better with Thief's colors(you didn't use them, did you?). Highlight seems a bit bright compared to the greens too.

I'll post a version with the colors from archer too, though I think that would be too lime green looking which is natural for the game but odd for the forest-green ranger; I will post anyway so it can be judged.
I do see the one flash of a color too dark oh the shoulder there, thanks Kage , I'll change that. And the helmet can be solid/static but I thought the reflection staying in place as the frames drop in the walking frames gave it more motion like FFT walks always have; I can easily make it static... up to you guys- even though I kinda like the movement..
I'll leave it up to Raven. When I go over the set I can either include the motion of the reflection or make it static.

The colors looks fine to me, lijj. I think it'll fit in fine. You don't ALWAYS have to use the EXACT colors of a sprite. Good artists can find colors to adapt and I think you just did.

I'm forgetting offhand - did we leave the light bobbing on the helmet on the other 5 Power Ranger sprites?  I know we were toying with it at one point but I can't remember what we settled on.  I'd only make the light reflection on the head bob if it does on all of them, otherwise go with the static one.  Keep the consistency going.  I like the movement myself but I think the sprites being consistent between themselves is most important.

I like the choice of greens myself.  The one thing that sucks is that I'm guessing you don't have the color choice needed to add that spec of red highlight onto his helmet that he has.  Then again, in FFT sprite form, that highlight might look weird.  It'd be something to differentiate the head a bit more from Jason's if it looks okay, though.

I forgot about the red diamond.. I remembered the angle goes slightly up on the visor but let's see what I can do.
Maybe if I change a yellow to reddish i can get another color; we'll see. It might be hard to get that detail centered.

Edit: pretty sure I can get it .. i love the yellows as they are but may need to redden them a little to get it
scratch that!

Looks like i need to lighten the darkest colors now but look! I kept the good yellow and squeezed the red in.(:

Ha, yeah, he could be Green in chapter 1 and change to White in Chapter 2, or even as late as Chapter 4. I'd probably say he goes white for Chapter 2 though, since his vanilla sprite's change is more dramatic. I mean really, he only gets that kinda retarded-looking cape in Chapter 4 to show his "king" (or "king"-ish, I was never quite certiain there... I think he's more of a Duke during chapter 4 and finally became a king after Altima is defeated when he marries Ovelia) status.

I do.  I just need to get in my Event Editing groove.

I actually have it planned out rather meticulously with a few open slots for if I have more than just the 6 Power Rangers to work with.  I just need to get my mod-work schedule going again, which is why I've been slowly trying to get into the groove by updating Redesign to get me back on track.

(Yeah. Besides, Tommy was already Jesus before his White Ranger change anyway.)

My screwing up Rita's quote a couple of days ago makes me wonder how difficult it would be to make a sprite of her and that trippy headdress. I have to wonder if she or Goldar would be more difficult to sprite. Hmmm....

Holy shit.  That video's only missing the musical overlay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7g0Ox-2c3M), but I'm pretty sure you can fix that.  (Gotta love how the length is exactly the same!)

It's amazing to see them all together like that beating down some Goblins.  Feels almost like a D&D campaign gone horribly, horribly wrong, in all the best ways.  I love it.

I'm curious how their skillsets are going to be worked out.  I only saw the first season, but every episode's battle would be a three part sequence.
part1- melee -easy to do
part2- super weapons - maybe swordskill like attacks
-Bad guy become a giant
Part3- Megazord battle! (the best part!) ....???.... You could have custom summons representing their "Zords"

A better idea for megazord is using Alma's template, Just a few attack frames and the special attack and it's enough for me.
Title: Re: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - SPECIAL POWER RANGERS EDITION.
Post by: Lijj on May 30, 2011, 11:54:03 pm
Both of these are good ideas.. I may have to make a couple summons and if I do a Megazord it would be limited like what Wolfran suggests. I may try to recruit some help from some pixel artists at Pixel Joint's forum to see if anyone's interested in making any monsters or other characters.
I took the video down for now because a new one's processing  I'll be back to upload the new vid in about an hour when Youtube's done processing

The only thing left that kinda bugs me is that it seems like everyone has some kind of light-reflection in their visors... Except for Pink. Is there a specific reason for this (based on the show, which I don't really remember at all having not seen an episode in over a decade), or was it just an oversight, or not enough colors, or what?

EDIT: I am, of course, referring specifically to the portraits.

It's fine, this project isn't dead.  It's on-hold until I've perfected EasyVent Editor Super Perfect and have helped Elric get Journey of the Five to a stable Chapter 1 release.  This is the next patch on my list to work on once Chapter 1 is out and my involvement in Journey of the Five can be relegated to mostly an advisory role.
