What exactly does this ASM do? set the faith related to caster/target to a virtual "100" so that there's no pusnishment?

If you're referring to the ASMs "Remove target's faith from spell damage calculations" and "Remove caster's faith from spell damage calculations" then yes, that is precisely what they do.
