Do I need custom firmware, to hack my psp?
how do I rip the ISO from the umd? and is it possible without custom firmware?,
I have a psp 2000, it might have come out of the box with 3.95 on it but I can't remember, is it possible to install custom firmware on it?

Thanks for those amazingly short answers, Vanya.

Dudeless: Regardless of your custom firmware, you can very easily switch to a custom firmware with some minor expense. You need to purchase what is called a "Pandoras Battery". The only exception is that brand brand new PSPs (firmware 5.00+) supposedly do not work with them.

The Pandoras Battery is also known as a "Jigkick", so consult ebay or your local market gathering place to buy one, they cost about $50 - $100 in australia. Once you have one, all you need to do is plug it in, and press X twice to switch to the new custom firmware. Once that's done you can rip your umd to an iso, and transfer it to your memory stick (Location of iso: ms0:/ISO for it to be seen by the firmware in Games -> Memory Stick).

Voila, one hacked PSP. All you need after that is FFTPatcher and Lioneditor.

For a much lower price, about 20$ plus shipping, you can get a Battery Service Tool. It can change any official Sony 1200mAh, 1800mAh or 2200mAh battery for PSP or PSP Slim into a Pandora Battery (aka a Service Battery) and change it back without any damage to the battery. I have one and it saved my ass many times when I was learning to mod my PSP. I must have bricked it 3 or 4 times. ^_^

Here's a link: http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/PSP-Battery-Service-Tool__EF000530.aspx

Also, you will need a memory stick of at least 512 megs IIRC to hold the files for the down/up-grade.

It came out of the box with version 3.95? Just hope it doesn't have a TA-088v3 motherboard. If it does, it you won't be able to get custom firmware.

If it does have a TA-088v3 motherboard, is there any damage I can do to my psp if I try to install custom firmware on it?. To answer your rhetorical (I think) question: it might have come out of the box with 3.95 on it but I can't remember.

If it does have a TA-088v3 motherboard, the PSP will boot into service mode with a Pandora battery like other PSPs, but it won't load the necessary files off of the magic memory stick. It won't damage the PSP in any way though.

If it does have a TA-088v3 motherboard, the only thing I can tell you at the moment is to not update beyond 5.02. There was an exploit found recently that may eventually lead to custom firmware on TA-088v3 PSP Slims.

Of course, even if it did come out of the box with 3.95, there's only a chance it has a TA-088v3 motherboard. It might have a TA-088v2 motherboard, in which case, you won't have any issues getting custom firmware. And if it came out the box with a firmware lower than that, then there's nothing to worry about at all.

Ok thanks for the info. Also what does Vanya mean when he said: "I must have bricked it 3 or 4 times"?

Bricking is a term used when reffering to an electronics item that has been rendered useless, usually in an upgrade that has gone wrong.

For short, the upgrade for him messed up his psp so bad that the internal software wouldn't work. The PSP had no working internal software and thus was rendered about as useful as a brick. Hence the term 'bricked'

It's just a matter of time before that definition is added to dictionaries. ^_^
